You can dedicate a whole channel to Neil, CSN, & CSN&Y, and all the iterations that came out of those 4 guys. From the Hollies, to the Byrds, to Buffalo Springfield, and all their solo careers..Unbelievable catalog of music grew out from those guys. Enjoy the ride!

It would take you quite a while to go through his albums, but it is worth every moment. His style never settles for too long, but it is all still him. If you want a starting point for reaction purposes, try the whole album After The Gold Rush. Such a consistently good record that you could be fooled into believing it's a greatest hits album.

All of us “amateur/hobbyist” guitar players owe a great debt to Neil Young for writing the best, most accessible, acoustic guitar songs ever. I literally taught myself to play guitar by studying Neil Young guitar tabs. I play this particular song nearly every day as it is so beautiful to strum. For any other budding guitarists out there who are curious, this song is done in drop-D tuning (low e string tuned down to d), and the tabs for this song are pretty easy to follow. And, as other commenters have pointed out, Neil had an awesome hard side, sometimes even referred to as being the grandfather of grunge. Definitely check out his early stuff such as Cinnamon Girl, Down by the River, and especially Cortez the Killer which I am currently learning. Another rabbit hole found! Good luck!
Neil has a lot of tunes that touch the dark subjects that other lyricist tend to avoid. Many of his songs are about the bad parts of our society. "Down by the River", and the "Needle + the Damage Done" are just 2 of them.
You will never get a bad suggestion for a Neil Young song. The Needle and the Damage Done is one of the most powerful songs ever written. Like the CSNY song Ohio, sometimes the shortest songs make the most impact.

Dude, loving your channel. I don't know if its the old dude who likes when you young'uns find these gems or what, but I dig it. This tune is def one of my top 10s, just love it. You nailed the vibe, its warm but melancholy. When you listen to this just can't help thinking about a time in your life that this song evokes. Its expertly played and delivered by Neil and his band. The whole album is also wonderful but this track does stand out, it did get quite a bit of radio airplay back in the day. I'm an X-er, teenager and young 20s in the 80s. I was never a big Neil Young fan, I dug some of the hits. During that time I was way too obsessed with prog rock, jazz fusion and straight ahead jazz that I kind of eschewed any of what we call classic rock from the 70s. I was 26 when this came out and that song just floored me, maybe I was just starting to grow up and get out of my mindset and able to just enjoy well crafted music and not judge it for its technical acumen. After hearing this on the radio, bought the record and played it constantly. Other great tunes on this record - Unknown Legend, You and Me, One of These Days, War of Man. For the exact opposite of chill, with the wildest, insanely loud guitar, try the live versions of Like A Hurricane, Cortez The Killer, or the studio version of Why Do I Keep Fucking Up? Neil am be the softest or the hardest. Great choice.

The live version seen/heard on his "Prarie Wind" live concert video is smooth as butter. He recruited several of his famous musician friends to perform in it. Look for the DVD. Highly recommended. Neil did it right after a brain cancer scare in the mid 2000s. And he's still going today. Peace out.

Neil Young is a giant of rock and roll, but this song is later, gentler Neil Young. Very nice but not exactly essential. To get into his early, essential stuff start with his early rocker "Mr. Soul" and then his pre-proggy masterpiece "Broken Arrow", both of which he did when he was a member of Buffalo Springfield. Or if you want to dive into his first great hard rocker as a solo artist then go straight for "Cinnamon Girl".

@@L33Reacts Cool, the main reason I recommend doing "Mr. Soul" first is because a live version of "Mr. Soul" is used in the intro to "Broken Arrow". So if you listen to the whole album you would have heard "Mr. Soul" first and then heard it again as part of a later song. I guess a little like The Beatles did with Sgt. Pepper, a song refrain later in the album.
The video is him and his band performing in a small mountain bar actuall not far from his house in California. Cuts between present and past with his future wife bartending, and them dancing through the years. I think its his wife and Emmy Loy Harris singing backup. And video of the guy sweeping.

Lee, another where-has-this-been song is Rocky Mountain High by John Denver. When I was a kid and that song came out, it spoke directly to me.
My wife and I were married on a Harvest Moon and our first dance was to this song… will always be a magical and emotional song and moment for us ❤
