$50,000 SIMULATORS: Realism or Laptime?

- At the ADAC sim racing expo in Germany, I tested the full spectrum of simulator rigs, but I couldn't help but notice two main themes. These companies either optimize their hardware for lap time in game, or for the feeling of realism.
As someone who personally uses sims for training for real life, I will always take realism over performance, but what are you guys looking for in a rig?

Realism, lap times gotta come from me
Not sure if this was ironic but some realism features are not for esport laptimes. The question was not if you win most of your lobby races.
If you ain’t first your last. If you are faster and get a better feel in a rig built for esports isn’t that more real then building a rig built trying to mimic the track? You are already spending close to the same amount of money for both
@@perludierende_praesumtionYou read the comment wrong. He means that he chose realism, and that lap times should come from his skill, not his setup.
Completely agree. I’ll never get to drive a real race car so I want to have a rig as close as possible to the real thing. Adjust driving style to fit the needs of a more realistic feeling rig.
Wow
I'm somewhere in the middle. I want to be competitive but I also want to be immersed. I used to race in VR but not having a high refresh rate really is what made me switch to triple screens. I do always love going back to vr from time to time though
im in the same boat for that balance of immersion and realism. i use an index so framerate isnt an issue for me, but even if i wanted triple monitors i dont have the space for a full sim rig
I can never get VR to feel right, everytime I try it all just looks blurry to me. I try it once a month still though.
@@darienheebner3064 it could either be the headset or IPD set incorrectly
Triple screens are more demanding though? Unless not that much res screens but then that won't be optimal.
it wasnt about how demanding it was.@@ThBlueSalamander my computer can handle it. If the refresh rate of a headset is 80 FPS then it will only ever show 80 FPS
I use my sim as a simulator, I want it to be as close to real life as possible

Realism all the way
Exactly , if I didn’t want realism I would just stick with my controller 😂
@@MrBossilinior just not competitive
"These belts help me trail brake" how the fuck 😂
Fucking thank you, I came here for this lmfao
These sim rigs move and angle the seat in order to simulate g forces, the belts being there allow the rig to move even more since you’re locked in better and can give you a better feel of the balance of the car rather than just a regular seat + wheel combo.
The belts are attached to a servo motor. When you brake the belts tighten to simulate G-force. By feeling the deceleration of the car through the tightness of the belts you can trail brake better by feel as opposed to just guessing how much you are decelerating the car. It’s a very useful feature to have. Basically all official race teams simulators implement a system like this due to its ability to better communicate what the car is doing to the driver.
I’d go with realism in the sense that I need to feel as much as possible.
Having learned to drift in a real car, I find drifting on a sim way more difficult because there’s very little mechanical communication.
I agree, what annoy me the most is that in game i have 0 feedback of my speed or my brake force

Real. I know im not gonna have a fast fast lap time. So the realer the better.
Realism 💯
People want to know or feel what real race car driver’s do.

My guy, that headset is fine. That's an HP Reverb G2 and I had one.
If your framerate is too low, it's not the headset. It's the machine powering it.
I used to get 120fps and at 90hz, there was NO lag.
Not only that he doesn’t focus on immersion, but says he wasn’t immersed cause of how the pedals “felt”. Product quality doesn’t equal immersion. I kinda feel he has some blatant favoritism and miss labeled why he wasn’t pleased with the higher end rigs.
@@mrmidnight32pedals can definitely have features that make them feel more or less immersive imo
In Australia we have the best racing sims in the world look up vrmotorsports and the sims there are insane
got the same headset, can confirm its great for sim racing
90hz is like a slide show in F1

Gangbang realism 🖕😅

Pretty sure asetek works with kevin magnussen which could explain why they go all in on realism
i'm going for laptime and comfort over realism tbh, for me at least the direct drive force feedback is enough and already gave enough information that i need to drive the car like how the bumps feels, throttle, clutch, oversteer and understeer etc. i don't wanna bouncing around while doing my laptimes over and over again while puking and getting headache, maybe there's people that like it which is fine but personally i don't like my sim rig moving
Consider going outside dork
No se pero yo prefiero que se mueva, tu mujer moviéndose da mucho juego
I’m still with PS4 and controller, but I tried some real sim setups and I personally think that realism is better than lap time, cause if one day I have to go on track, I would have at least a bit of knowledge on how a car responds to the bumbs and so on
Realism. Immersion. Better lap times are fun, but take time and work. Immersion is instant.
Realism for me,
Considering I use my sim rig as a trainer for my real racing, I prefer realism. However I also sim race as a hobby so... I guess it depends on intent
The idea of using the left foot for the brake is absolutely blowing my mind
You clearly dont dabble in some racing shenanigans at the function
Left foot braking is necessary if you want to be competitive
The method they show you when you get a drivers license is for safety
Reaction times are better nd handling is superior when driving with both feet
It’s funny because before I started playing sims I would make fun of bad drivers by saying they’re “driving with two feet” then I started sim racing and found out it’s actually way better. Now I drive with two feet just like the people I used to make fun of😂
Like in the go-kart. You break with your left.
Well when you want to improve both driving and racing techniques, realism is key
I actually agree with Asetek, I have their invicta pedals, and I bought the pedals after I bought the fanatec DD1 wheel base. With their wheelbase and their many options of steering wheels, I wish I waited. Although my fanatec is actually really good, Asetek is more appealing to me coz of how they really pushing for a race car realistic feel and I get that from the pedals
I’m choosing realism for sure 👍🏾
REALISM.
I care mostly about how much joy it gonna bring me
Realism and immersion
When asetek gets compatabilty sorted they will be great.
Precision and comfort. Realism nice to have. I believe the primary function of the rig is to enable you the opportunity to grow in skill.
A more realistic feel would end up better for you long term because you could jump into a car irl and be quick from the get go.
I build a SFX-100 and i think less is more. I dont hunt for fastes times. I enjoy racing with friends and good equipment for biggest immersion.
Ideally you want to be able to tune and configure if you want laptime or realism without being locked out of either one.
Ideally I want a realistic sim. You can go just as fast ona realistic sim and youre more likely to get picked up by a team. If you need a sim with built in handicaps to help your lap time youre bad.
It's not related to driving help from games that aren't sims like petty Gran Turismos and Forzas, what I mean is some sims will have physics and FFB that makes it more intuitive to feel what the car is doing but can be less realistic compared to a real steering wheel that can feel quite dampened.
In most games and sims, there is shit that is off and that bothers me.
In a sim the LMP4 not having the engine maps as IRL... the apex speed on certain corners and tracks which I've seen IRL the G-forces and cornering speeds in the software don't match real life... that is one thing.
And then when you drive the car it should feel as realistic as it feels to the driver but that can be subjective.
There are cases where the sim BOP matches IRL speeds and overall performance but the driving feels off and the telemetry of the inputs in game doesn't match what you would expect from IRL and vice versa.
Ideally, on the best possible sim, the car performance would match IRL in similar conditions and the telemetries would be close to matching each other, for the same driver.
There must be a mix of simulation and real motorsport feedback loop.
It's a joke that guys like Jimmy had to go back to AMS1 to get a properly specd Praga R1 that matched up to IRL.
It means that they can do more realistic stuff on a 20y old software than any modern game, if they just put in the effort.
I've done some pretty decent laps but I still advocate for the ability to let beginners enjoy sim racing and learn at their own pace. TBH I don't like the playerbase dwindling down to just a couple of try hards.
I think they need a GTR2 racing school kind of thing, more than lines on the track or auto-stability or whatever they make up.
From my experience I think both are connected, I don't own a DD wheel but when I go to a friend's setup with a DD I make better lap times than with a classic FFB, and the driving feels much better
Agree !
That was one of the best upgrades I ever made by far. With belt driven wheels I’d occasionally push a little too hard in iRacing and once you lost the rear that was it. With a direct drive I rarely do it and when I do I catch it 99.9% of the time with ease. It’s so responsive it practically catches itself.
@@Jpilgrim30 Which DD you have ?
Immersion is what I look for.
Realism straight up
realism is most important. the realist feel of everything is what im searching for
I want more accurate feed back MOAR ALWAYS
Not me with a G27, a chair from Kmart and a modified shift knob.
Realism over lap times
Good video
Realism for sure!
As someone who can’t properly brake in sims (prolly cause my springs are too strong for what I’m used to in my actual car) I prefer realism over lap times. If I’m gonna go into a wall let’s at least make it interesting
Realism. I want to feel like I’m getting actual seat time in to get ready for the real thing on the track. 🤙🏼
VR it's the best integration on sims since the release of steering wheels with force feedback!
No way I go back to drive on a flat screen!
its called simulation racing for a reason, realism should always come first
I would argue that more realistic sims would make your lap times better in the long run because you get a better feel for the track. Also, they would make you a better driver is the sim is closer to real life
I only do it so i can feel like im there
Realism ofcourse. I wanna experience the real feeling driving a real race car regardless how hard it is and hurt my laptime. As long as its realistic I would go for it
Me not even having a racing sim be like: 😥
We want to experience the G-Force
Until someone invents artificial gravity, we are out of luck...
A great quote by someone from ltt: "The most realistic setup is the fastest setup because the most realistic thing to do is win".
Realism is what i want
100% realism
Forget lap time I could come in dead last every time but if it feels like I'm actually driving I will smile and laugh like a maniac every single lap
I care about fun
I want both! I am a very happy Asetek customer. I strongly recommend you check their gear out if you haven't already.
You should go to VR Motorsports in Australia. The realism is crazy there.
Realism would have to be my go to.
The first VR headset in the first rig the reason why it was so laggy is because that VR headset is a bit outdated. It’s a oculus rift.
I look at the fun aspect of sim racing. In order to have good lap times, or feel the realism in a rig you have to have fun in it
Realism for sure
Form follows function, a classic design saying. As long as the form allows me the best lap times, then yes there should be realistic options.
You'll never feel the g force of a real f1 in a sim.
what i care about is the drift score
Realism with a nod to keeping the price affordable to the average consumer
Realism for sure 👌
I personally enjoy realism. I know I’m never going to be pro or anything and even if doing something the “realistic way” may put me a little slower it’s still more enjoyable in the sense of how much you can lose yourself to the more realism
Both are very important to me but first I want to have my potential focused mostly on realism since that is gonna help me on lap times eventually when I get better in realism
I think that the "legacy competitors" could have done a way better job in the realism factor with the money they've spent on everything.
But at the end of the day we all love racing so get in there lewis -casual super gt reference
My son had been building his rig over the last few years. I’ve been irl drifting for about 10years and my biggest leap in improvement has come from seshing AS.
Ok the “feel” will never be the same but the procedures are the same and the muscle memory that is learnt is invaluable!
I do think though once you start spending £3-4k on a sim you should probably just buy a real track/skid car.
¡Nel, po's a mí me viene valiendo chóstomo porque sí tengo un trabajo fuera de la matriz!
I’d rather focus on realism over lap time because I want the transition from sim to real life to be as seamless as possible.
A balance between both would be good
I'm all out on realism
Lap times is fun, but generally the appeal to sim racing is to “train” for real racing
However I could definitely see this taking off as its own thing-using techniques unique to sim racing that aren’t normal in real vehicles
That’s already of course a thing. With easier setups being used for WRs. But it can go further for sure
As a competitive person, i would focus more on competitive time. If i want to feel real racing i would go for the real life track and experience it and compare.
As long as I'm having fun playing a great game and having epic battles with friends and/or other players, I don't really mind either one.
As a rally driver I prefer the feel of somethint closer to realism than lap time. Going faster in a game and then trying to put that into real life is like saying you play need for speed underground before you race.
Can you give more info on your experience with the self tightening belt straps
I care about the 100% experience you get from playing with friend.
I race for realism but i also do lap times with realism
I don't do it for lap time or realism. I do it for fun
Realism is what I choose
Man, vr setuos with hydraulics are a good way to make you motion sick, if the braking feel isn't as close to real as the rest. Did one a while back. Sideways and accel movement was fine, but there was no braking movement. It made me very motion sick, but pushed through
I only drive race sims for the feeling of adrenaline when I can't drive a real car. So realism all the way
I'm at the point where I want to have fun but I don't need a 5000-10000dollar rig to fuck around in beam ng😂
I remember someone making a setup but instead of a game you control an RC car in real life and whenever the rc car jumps or hits a bump the setup also moves corresponding on the rc cars movements
Wow i never knew asetek avtually made racing gear. A few years ago i was invited by one of my old esport teams to hang out while they were bootcamping. The bootcamp was at the asetek rnd building in Denmark and i got to see the rig that the owners son uses to practice (i believe he drives in f3 maybe f4. He did at the time at least)
I care about fun, so probably realism
Got to try a podium 1 sim at a expo in Texas, that was really cool. Beyond too expensive for me tho 😂
Tbh I really prefer realism and then your lap times will become better the more you learn tracks and practice
What ever I feel more comfortable with
Ideally as sims develop having a more realistic rig should = faster. Unfortunately is not the case currently. But once we are truly there having the most realistic feel should mean the highest ceiling for pace.
Didnt know you call the ADAC as one word outside of Germany :D
Realism hands down. Lap times will come over time with more seat time
Realism the realer it reals the farther I can dive into the corner and make it stick
The last one is a proper rally setup
Big triple tvs
How is it better than VR? Especially when taking corners sideways and you have to look through the window instead of the windshield lol
@@iseslc Yeah I'm looking forward to trying VR. It's way more visually effective than triple monitors I imagine
But triple monitors is still a really good setup for visual immersion, and has the advantage of seeing your wheel and shifter
Again obviously I haven't tried VR myself yet, but just what I'm thinking
@@josephbornman8462 Oh I see, seeing the wheel and shifter is a great advantage, if I had the room for triple monitors...
@@iseslc What VR headset do you use?
@@josephbornman8462 Oculus Quest 2.
Realism. I know I'm far from the fastest driver and I've accepted that, so I care more about the experience than lap times.
Lap time. I enjoy winning 😂
Bro the r8 in the background 😭
try dallara's sim, alberto naska tried it and so did charles leclerc
I’m 45 and have come to accept that my dream career, hell, even hobby, of a race car driver is in the bin. Simply because of space, I think when ever I can get a sim, it will have to be VR headset. I’m prepared to sacrifice a bit there, if I can get something that has a wheel with good feedback, and heavy brake and clutch pedals. I would like versatility too, because I’d also like to play truck sims and a bunch of different cars, rather than just an open wheeler, so perhaps a quick release to go from a F1 to a normal wheel.
