    How many calories can I burn in an hour of karting? Using an ECG-based heart rate monitor, I tracked my heart rate during an intense qualifying and race session in a rotax go-kart. Using the monitor's app, we got a shocking calorie burn total... but are these readings even accurate? This video aims to discuss that.
    Check out your heart rate next time you go karting:

    Lap 41 T8 even got me holding my breath 😂
    A 40 min race at Sandown.... I mean I do like the track for short races but I do also find it a bit too repetitive for long races. Daytona, Milton Keynes for an outdoor rental is one of the best (Besides PFI or GYG)
    Also, It's interesting working out your heart rate/calories usage as there's also lots of other variables to take into consideration; if your naturally athletic then your HR recovers quicker, if your older it can take upto 45 minutes to settle down, if your overweight then the post race cooldown can cause you to shiver due to excessive dehydration in the race (especially in the winter) if your wearing a lined race suit that keeps you warm Vs a rental one that is made of tissue paper and offers no warmth your body will have to work harder to stay warm/cool depending on the weather.
    I did one myself over 12 different races, one a month a few years ago, all at the same track to see which has a higher HR demand but the biggest variable are the 'muggles'
    A clean race or a race with more experience on track results in a more average HR, but one with a melee of those inexperienced 'racers' puts HR all over the place.
    On a side note, I've found that slipstreaming an equally experienced racer for countless laps actually lowers the HR because I guess you find them reliably predictable in every turn and every straight.

  • @ROEDxTzaca
    @ROEDxTzaca Год назад +8

    I don't get why do you have such a high heart rate while racing, you look fit and you are young. I did the same monitoring as you, at the other Daytona track (MK) and I had 162 max with and 135 average bpm. Basically your average BPM is the same as my highest BPM, and that include the 40 min before and after the race, without that you averaged 180+ Bpm, which is insane! I was pretty fit when I did the test and I'm older, but I find the difference staggering

    I think in order for the calorie burn calculation to be effective, the algorithm will need to be trained on data collected performing a fairly specific activity. For example the same HR on the same person doing running vs biking will produce different calorie expenditure. And I don't think any of the HR monitoring devices currently have trained their algorithms on racing. And even if they had, it would likely be moderately different between actual racing and sim racing.

    I suspect the calorie consumption is high. Even though it looks like the heart rate measurements are accurate, "high heart rate because exercise is causing the blood to have to force oxygen to your muscles" is work rate heart increase, and calorie burning, "high heart rate because excitement and stress" is not calorie burning, it's just fight/flight preparation.... Just like your heart rate goes up if you're in trouble at school/work or you think a fight is going to kick off or something, you're not actually burning noticeably more calories at that point. Really interesting video though, loved the race commentary 👍

  • @andersnrtangen8561
    @andersnrtangen8561 Год назад +2

    Fun video, and great driving 😎 It is clear that driving requires fitness, but the calorie estimation seems _very_ inaccurate. Heart rate does not equal power output. It can vary based on lots of factors like your stress, how much sleep you had, if you drink coffee etc. Also losing weight during a single race will be water weight only. Calorie _estimation_ on HR is based on statistics in a sport like running where weight and speed is also considered. You would also need to do a test of your max heart rate where you ran to complete exhaustion.
    If we look at cycling, which is arguably one of the most data-driven sports out there, and it is common to have precise power meters. A well trained and fit person with average genetics is able to (theorietically) output ~300 watts sustained effort for an hour. After such an effort the person would likely not be able to stand upright. This would equal 1080 kcal. Your 1438 kilocalories in 1 hour would put you in the top 10 in Tour de France, where Chris Froome famously was able to output 414 watts per hour (1490 kcal/hr) 😆 I would love to see you do another video with an expert in the field of racing that could provide you with some insight.

    I do cycling and I never use my heart calories as a reference for calories burnt. We use something called a power meter which measures the amount of power that our legs exert on the pedals. Since if measured your power output it a much better estimate. My heart rate calories burnt were always more exaggerated than my power meter calories

    Good video but the feedback from me, having previously been an athlete for 15 years and spending many hours being tested as a lab rat, I would confidently say the heart rate is over reading. At threshold HR, you can’t talk. Karting can be physical but the high HR looks like a classic vibration ping. Out side of that you can also only accurately measure calories burned by measuring power.
    I would expect the calories burned to be closer to 500 kcal in the Kart and on a sim not much different to walking around the house and doing some house work 200 Kcal.
    The other thing to consider is the smaller and lighter you are the less you burn. Big heavy people generally burn more Kcal to stay alive.

    Heart rate is mostly useless for determining energy expenditure other than the general trend of higher heart rate = more energy.
    Energy expenditure can be accurately estimated to within 10% by taking average power output in Watts * hours * 4. So if you're a ~150 lbs individual and you run at a reasonably quick 10 mph pace (6 min mile) for 1 hour (10 miles total) that corresponds to about 240-260W average which is 980 - 1040 calories. The exact number will vary depending primarily on running efficiency.

    I cant fathom having a 180 heart rate driving a cart. I strive to get there on my road bicycle for fitness. We have the same hr monitor too.
