Beautiful message!!! I love this. I think Steve Jobs once calculated how much time is collectively wasted by waiting for something to load...and demanded that his engineers and designers minimize this kind of thing obsessively. Perhaps more empathy there than some would think. In big things and little things, empathy is SO important to technology design.

Great talk! I love this perspective on empathy as technology. Powerful concept.

Presenting 'empathy' as an essential feature of design engineering is very interesting. We commonly talk of 'getting into the minds' of users, or 'user modelling' as important is creating effective systems for their end users, and of Brian Shackel's dimensions of 'utility', 'usability' and 'likeability' as measurable dimensions of of well we have achieved that effectiveness. Damian's 'empathy' seems to summarize all of that - can we come to 'feel' what it is like to be a user, and then let those feelings guide us in the design - and she gives many examples of how to achieve that empathy. This is a very useful video for design engineering and human factors courses.
