Bro the way you mix teaching with humor and the way you deliver both is so fun and engaging to watch... i mean i had fun learning music production from the start (despite it being pretty difficult) but your way of educating just pulls me in even more and almost makes me forget how hard it actually is... this shit makes me remember that i started out making music to have fun. I sometimes forget that until i come across another one of you vids. keep it up
yeah this guy is genius
Seriously funnier than most stand up comedians and tv sitcoms
Never thought I'd learn so much about bass in a 10 min video. Thanks underbelly 🕺
0:59 "it's the sweet delicious glue that holds the pieces of the band together"
**Yoko's picture**
I spit out my coffee when he said "It sounds like Humpty Dumpty has colon cancer" and I wasn't even drinking any
I'd get tested just in case

@@pixelwax2882We always knew you were gay.
The Electric Bass in the Guitar and Bass pack is particularly good for creating bass 'ghost notes'. This is what makes bass players like Jaco Pastorius sound so funky. Once you've written your bass line, go back and start adding extremely short notes in syncopated 16th positions in the high register. These notes are so short you can barely tell what pitch they are but they add a percussive magic that will bring your bass lines to life.
Thanks! Will try this out.
Jaco was a beast at bass solos
See MonoNeon from Ghost-Note
Great tip, and 100%
@ Arne Hanna: Pastorius, Erskine and Zawinul are GODS!
At least 70% of what I know about Funky Bass and keyboards improvisation comes from Weather Report. So I'm gonna put a HUUUGEE Thumb up here!
The second part of the bassline reminds me Music sound better with you by stardust, excellent tutorial UB!!
Because those 4 notes are the same but played differently ;)
Bruh, I died at the bassist take upers and downerss thats why they always playing octaves. XD
Using A minor after C major was hilarious
using midi bass plugins to emulate the funk, by placing notes on the piano roll is considered illigal in the bass world. By your accent and the lighting conditiones in your room we could already locate you and will place several bassists in your area to ensure you wont do that again. They are waring B-15 and playing long scales. Not the type of guys who are playing with guitar picks, ...if you know what I mean. By continuing to not using a physical bass, we will be forced replace your fridge with an ampeg 6x10 cabinet.
beautiful explanation can you explain how to make disco 70 strings ?
Been making the best how to produce videos for years and still getting better. Thanks fella!
This is the new gold standard for tutorial videos for any topic
I'm only ok with ripping off Dua Lipa if Underbelly wears the same outfits
I honestly didn't expect to actually finish the video. But it's unexpectedly brilliant! Good on the democratized nature of RUclips that can allow such unique voice to be published and heard!
do you even Earth the past few years?
This was fucking amazing. Love the sense of humor, memes, music and talent! Great job mate, honestly.
I teach Ableton in a school, this is such an unbelievable tool , thank you so much !!!
It is noble to be expert in whatever you have the good fortune to teach
This is one of the best tutorials i've ever seen. So helpful and the humor is on point. I love this guys teaching.
Underbelly.... It seems like... the music sounds better with YOU!
Just found your channel Instasubscribed! Amazing work as a teacher and as a producer. Great Sound! Any chance for a "You Suck at Disco Drums"? Like how to keep them from sounding boring and repetitive
My roomate says I should lay off the lines, but now I can hit all the lines I want, basslines that is. Thanks UB.
I love how the titles does not have ''You Suck'' at the front anymore. For he knows his audience grew with him :D
Laughing while learning is the greatest feeling. You're the best, Underbelly!
Mmmm STAR LIGHT! CAN YOU FEEL ME AGAIN HEAR ME AGAIN OH WHAT YOU NEEEED
Legit the AVGN of Music Production Tutorials I love it XD
Are you comfortable with money? Because if you're poor while having all this easy "on the tip" skills that everybody is dreaming of, it would be quite demotivating
Underbelly is really just Thomas Bangalters cousin from Connecticut
Hilarious “It sounds like Humpty Dumpty has colon cancer” you blind sided me
What a perfect video. I just started with Ableton & this whole producer thing less than a month ago so everything is very new to me. I’m happy with my progress but your video has taken me from the middle of the disco with a frown to groovin in the spotlight! You rock man! Keep it coming 👏👏👏

at 3 minutes in I finally understood what is meant by playing along with the drums just by showing an actual example of it! Haven't found any video that explained it that simply lol
Man, you had me at Yoko Ono
I'm a bass player by feel and sound alone and never thought learning core and basic music theory would up my bass playing. Thanks for this video i never knew that i was doing Chromatic motion all the time i decided to use a Diminished chord/note both on my bass and electric guitar playing.
I love your way of explaining things with that passive aggressive sarcastic undertone. Wowsers :-D ... I am Greg and and i suck as producer
hoooollllyyy shiiiiiid i never knew ableton had a scale section... game changer!!!!
I want to know where to find that amazing hi hat loop and percussion in the background!!??
You are a legend in pedagogy
This was genuinely super helpful!
That B part sent me into a groove. Good work! Daft punk vibes with it for sure.
The B part is basically the bassline from Stardust's only track, "Music Sounds Better With You." Stardust is compromised of Thomas Bangalter (silver half of daft punk, ran a label called roule), Alan Braxe (french house legend and released some tracks under roule), and Benjamin Diamond (just a french vocalist). So that probably explains why.
I love how you make me feel like an idiot, while also teaching me cool stuff.
as someone who's just been throwing droney one-note per bar basslines into my dance beats way too much, this is good reality check. thanks
I main tuba and make hip-hop and silent hill beats. You have no idea how much the bass can make a beat or song feel so different and in many times, better.
Listen to this man. Thanks for lighting more minds, underbelly.
yo i'm gonna check out your silent hill beats!
Oh my, is that set scale on the piano roll a new feature on Ableton live 11? Or can I do that on 10 as well?
Amazing tutorial as always 😭🙌🏾🔥🔥🔥
C for colon cancer
Praise be to the RUclips algorithm for delivering this channel.
Would be nice to be able to download your projects :)
2:03 How come his note, envelope and expression tabs are under the clip view?
I didnt even catch the yuno oko joke the first time I watched this lmfao
I only clicked this because it said daft punk in the title. And I don't even play bass, I play acoustic lol
10 minutes and 19 seconds of funky dunky freshie freshie
Dear undie, you're freakin' awesome, hope you'll read it.
I feel like you are explaining like I'm an idiot, and I like that
All this time, Uncle Joe was a goddamned liar--he said that the bass had only one sole purpose...
@yousuckatproducing can you do a breakdown of the whole loop you made? with all the top instruments and drums are made?
As a bassist I definitely enjoyed it lol
Omg still hasn't dropped (and somehow managed to keep up) the stilted 'how to' vibe - Uncle Joe would be proud! Wowsers🤘🕶🤘
Highkey could build an entire career off of this video
“I don’t want to just rip off Dua Lipa for the rest of my life” lol great video, subscribed.
Jesus, I died laughing! Funny but great info...and phunky fresh.
Thank you for your wisdom, O Mighty Underbelly.
Stop spreading lies!!! Sally never used that red dress in Studio 54, it was clearly pink.
That Yoko Ono picture on the TV was excellent 😂 Ura genius UnderB!
Disco-funk bass lines from who????? maybe you should check chic...bionic boogie...musique...cerrone...voyage...kc and sunshine band.....erath wind and fire.....hamilton bohannon...brothers johnson....t connection and THOUSANDS others.
Came for the production tips. Stayed for the WOWZERS
the yoko pic made me bust out laughing
Bro the way you teach is so motivating for some reason, maybe it’s the humor idk but I love it
Man I just want to listen to this base line over and over
... yeah I guess I could just put on some Dua Lipa
Really like this format of videos, can't wait for new ones!
I LOVE YOOOOUUUU!!!
“musik sounds better with you”
Ooh thank you for this! My basslines are gonna be x100 more 🔥 now 👀
Now this is my kind of tutorial.
Does this also work in Ableton Intro?
Only vid I’ve seen so far and I could not subscribe and like fast enough. Dude keep it up
Bro made better base then il ever make
Damn that b section is swweeet as 👌👌😘
daaaym! hes back
I love the slow burn and unmentioned irony posting of having it ended up as a Fred falke baseline. Pointing out that dua lipas song writers were ripping off teenage daft punk. You are a deep cat and I love it.
By which I mean the second part is starduse-music sounds better with you. Which was Alan braxe, Fred falke and daft punk before they took that name based on a Guardian review of Stereolabs first album.
I love the history behind that track. I think they were all DJing or in a club, heard the song they sample and were like "Yo, lets make this". Made one absolute banger and eternal floor filler, moved on and never continuted the project. Love it.
Please do a lesson on Disco strings.
Great great video. (& Moustache)😁
MOOOOOM, THE WEIRD MAN'S USING THE CHROMATIC SCALE IS BACK AGAIN
LMAO! Like Daft Punk & Dua lipa 🤣🤣🤦🏾♂️ study Nile Rogers or Bootsy collins people.. not the cheap imitations
holy shit i love you man. This was awesome. I'm studying education in school and let me tell you brother there is a lot of professional educators who could stand to watch a couple of your videos. Not only are your basslines stylistic, but your teaching style is as well. Truly man, I'm blown away. I got five (5) good hearty laughs, and seven (7) chuckles out of this. Not only this, but I really do feel I've learned something today. It's true, I do suck at producing, but after this, I will be a little bit better, and one step closer to my goals. You have empowered, inspired, and humored me, and you have most definitely got my subscription. I look forward to watching more of your videos and learning more from you. From the bottom of my heart brother, thank you. be well.
Comparing Disco bass to Funk bass. Is like comparing Hard Rock to Heavy Metal????
Yeah, Disco have a tendency to uses more octave and a lot of repetitive patterns, while Funk have more variation and they left "empty spaces" and use syncopation a lot
I only write in pelog tembug
To respond to your title, "How to Write Funky Disco Basslines like Daft Punk, Dua Lipa, SG Lewis", all you need to do is rip off those that came before you. Here, check it; "How to Write Funky Disco Basslines like Bootsy Collins"
Dude...brilliantly funny and informative. Great work! ;)
Always enlightening, always entertaining . Thanks UB
Can’t wait to get a lesson from Prance again.
I’ve always imagined the roles in a four-piece like those word ladder puzzles.
Drums - rhythm, no strings
Bass - rhythm, with strings
Guitar - melody, with strings
Vocals - melody, no strings
Of course, that’s very basic and nothing is true 100% of the time, but it seems like “once upon a time” that may have been the reasoning… even if it was just instinctive.
I think thats a great way of putting it, for that Rock Band archetype atleast.
I don't know who you are or what your deal is, but i just subscribed so i can find out. Just, like... no more "cancer" talk, though. Please?
[That was awesome.]
b section is reminiscent of stardust - music sounds better with you
I think it straight up is the bassline
Best tutorial voiceover you could possibly ask for. Damnit man, keep up with these style!
1st class infotainment! Entertaining and educational. Thank you.
I was mislead… I was hoping for a tutorial with a real bass guitar 😭
underbelly, good boy!
I will, going forward, assess my music based on whether it sounds like Humpty Dumpty has colon cancer or not. Thanks!
Okay, I'm done ripping off Dua Lipa.
Let'e start ripping off Stardust.
😄
Not even 30 seconds and I already feel attacked. Great lesson
"how to write funky disco basslines like daft punk" - find a funky track from about 2 decades ago, and sample the bass from it, with a little processing and filtering
Please stop saying colon cancer so much, some of us have lost parents and would rather not think about things like this when learning something. I know it's a joke, but respectfully I have to tell you it isn't very funny.
Congratulations on properly shaving your beard neckline ... anyone doing the George Lucas, stop it.
