You’re either chorus or against us.
That was a painfully bad pun; I salute you.
I thought it was pretty clever!
@@horowizard Of course it was clever. The better the pun, the greater the pain.

Ok Boomer
I love how he never flexes his own products and just hypes up the pedal building community. Great people, that JHS crew
He flexes other companies' products so the pedals he promotes cost as much as his own pedals lol.
I think his focus is on making a good show on pedals and lets that be an advertisement for his pedals
@@12ryudragon idk he talks good about cheaper pedals too, honestly he doesn't talk bad about any pedal...
he literally took out one of his pedals and said one of these 12 best chorus pedals in his opinion is what he used to work his pedal around
11:11
I'm convicted that people just like to collect colorful little boxes, there's no other explanation to have more than a dozen pedals (and that's already kinda a lot), having said that I want every single one of them.
That's not totally true. Some of them are black.
Pedro Thevenard
I have 8 pedals every one is a different color, makes for a nice looking pedalboard. Strymon seems to have the nicest colors love my Dig dual delay.
They are all different colours which makes them like sweets/candy. Very addictive. Also being small you can sneak them into the house without your other half seeing. Saves a lot of “difficult “ conversations!
Checks pedalboard... decides now is not the time to mention my 18 absolutely-essential pedals.
@@iannicholls7476 I only really got addicted to pedals when I realised they were much easier to dismiss to her than a new axe or amp!!
Will you make a CHORUS BONSAI pedal with all the best classic choruses in one box?
@JHS Pedals WERE BEGGING YOU!!!
Yep... Begging!!!
Yes!
Yes. This.
Make it stereo!
Woah, im a year older than you *looks into the distance and wonders what i'm doing with my life, wonder years theme plays in the background*
Love your videos man!
You make great videos though
60 Cycle Hum - Don't do it man! If you wanna lament at least switch it up to "People Who Died". or "Save it for Later". "Turn, Turn, Turn" is more depressing than the the ending of "The Wanderer's"
Yeah I was born in 1982 too man. Time to start a pedal company.
What age is he? Can someone tell me.
Dimension C struck me as a "less is more better" pedal, all the options sound like what i need when i want a chorus effect.
I have the Waza Dimension C and it's absolutely flawless. It's got that perfect lush watery chorus that's not too wobbly, not too phasey and in general, just doesn't do anything weird. It's just a great chorus and after owning the Waza CE2, Corona, Tricerachorus, CE5, small stone and Strymon Ultraviolet, the Dimension is chorus perfection to my ears. No need for any fancy controls. It's like they took 4 great examples of a chorus and gave us preset buttons.
@FastRedPonyCar Agreed. It's going to be on my board forever
@@FastRedPonyCarhas some Rush vibes going on
Love the chords you play with the TC Electronics pedal. Sounds so good. Thanks for a great video Josh!
CONGRATULATIONS! By Wearing a ThatPedalShow T-shirt whilst simultaneously strumming the opening chords of a Crowded House song, you have unlocked the Dan Steinhardt Aussie residency clause. Your papers are in the mail.
Well said mate !
Best Comment Ever!! :)
super funny and cool comment!
Aye
😂
The MXR Analog Chorus is slept on man. It's really versatile and probably the best Chorus i've ever played because you make it Sound Modern or very 80's which you usually can't get both outta one chorus.
One word - Tone Suck (Oops that’s 2 words)
I own one, you can get past it by leaving the pedal on and just lowering the level all the way. It only sucks tone when you bypass it so in a rig you can definitely use it still. Tone suck is there but it’s not a real problem. Slash apparently uses this for when he needs chorus.
Super tone suck

Why am I crying when you start playing boss ce-2??? You just hit me in the soft spot. I love you Josh
Thanks so much for the video Josh! I had a 1983 CE2 and this video inspired me to pick up a CE1, CS9, vintage Dimension C and a twin cam chorus. Thanks again!
Felt a bit seasick by the end of this video
Aidan French lol
hahaha
I am a Chorus junkie. Had em all. Loved this Video. Like a trip down memory lane. The Most Under-Rated Chorus of all time is the Ibanez Bi-Mode Chorus ( black & purple ). Amazing Pedal. I am currently using the Free the Tone Tri Avatar Multi Dimensional Chorus . . . and it is Extremely Versatile and Sounds Fantastic.(also) Boss DC-2W on my Acoustic.
I really appreciate you ending with musical applications of the gear you're discussing. It helps to contextualize them and think about how the can be "musical" for those of us who don't see those things intuitively.
Josh, no matter what pedal you demo or video you make, I am so impressed that your guitars are always intonated spot on! Makes my ears so happy!!! Peterson strobo is my first and fav pedal before all others!!!!
Ahhh. All that chorusing reminds me of my first chorus pedal from Arion. Those hazy summer days played through my crappy Crate amp with a beat up Aria strat. Good times.
Say Jin, ever see a Aria 'Tree of Life' all curly maple Les Paul copy? Bolt on neck. Beautiful inlay on fingerboard. I traded mine as a depressed teenager back in the late 70's....and now I want it or another one back. Awesome looking & sustain...and the treble pickup was in the pocket hot!
Dude, you're speaking my language! I remember back in '85, playing my own Aria guitar with the Arion SCH-1 chorus through my Gorilla amp. ( Remember those?!?) Those were the days...
Reminds me of Schwetie Balls too, Boss chorus and...good times...
Ok, so now you've done chorus, you have to do flanger!! Chorus has always been a favorite of mine, I've got an early boss ce3 that's pretty sweet!
Warpaint, definitely
Yes!!! Flange away!!!
I LOVED this strange flanger but mine got stolen in 1982, never saw another.
Had a cool static Manual mode And a Distortion built in.
Multivox SE-11 Big Jam Jazz Flanger

Have to include the self-assembly Amdek FLK-100 Flanger.
I used to have a Boss BF3, just an updated BF2, one has to make the list! Of course there's the HF2 as well, the high band flanger!
Just came across this video, super interesting to learn the history of all these effects. Can’t wait to binge all your videos tonight!! Awesome content man, earned a sub
Thanks. That was a fun video on all things Chorus Pedal. I have been playing guitar for 53 years now (68 and full-time player). Worked in a music retail store (1980 thru 1997). I was in on the ground (chorus) floor with the Boss CE-1, CE-2 (sold it, missed it, bought another one in 1981 and still have it), Dimension C (still have it). Had a DOD bigger bulkier stereo chorus that was nice but sold it. Now, I rarely even use chorus. But it is such a beautiful sounding effect. Had a Roland Jazz Chorus 120 for a while too. Wish I still had it. One of the originals from the very first year of production. Sigh... Great job on the video bro. I subscribed. Keep'em coming'!
10:29. Let me tell you! I bought an Arion Chorus in 1988, my first Chorus pedal and it's still going strong. It's been heavily used and has never given me any issues.
I had a Arion stereo phasers and I had the same experience. Pretty great build for plastic
Thank you for picking out the chords. I have no idea why so many chorus demos contain blues soloing and chord strumming.
Damn, I was really impressed by that Boss Dimension pedal. Such a lush chorus sound! Thanks for making a tough decision for me even harder, Josh!
It's my favourite shimmery type of chorus too. It was the one used on Prince's Purple Rain.
This channel has me rediscovering pedals I already own. I've never used those settings on my whammy, awesome!
The Japanese House! Wow! Always nice to discover new music. Thanks! I’m a digital chorus afficionado.
Boss Chorus Ensemble, Boss CE-2, and Small Clone. You need nothing else. Such nice, warm and soft, highly effected sound. I love these.
Nope. The Ibanez chorus is amazing.
@@123uzuzseriously, and criminally underrated too! All 4 are amazing
Dang man, sorry I loved every video I’ve watched but just now subscribed. You’re awesome at what you do brother. Thank you for educating us on the awesomeness that is the world of pedals.
I love chorus so much I’m rewatching this video
I'm a chorus effect fan!!! I had have several pedals (Boss CE-20, Boss CH-1, Nux Mod Core, Liquid Chorus, Angel Chorus, Boss CE-2b, handmade chorus, etc), but my favorite at all is the Boss CE-2, it is in my board since ever! It's from 1980, same year of my wife born, so I love that so much!
Glad you mentioned the Whammy. That is a go to sound for me, and I rarely use the Whammy for anything else.
Another great and inspiring video! I'll try some of these out, indeed. For years, however, my go-to chorus has been the MXR Stereo Chorus.
The FX65 was the first pedal I bought when I started playing in 1990. Still have it. Still love it. Lovely faux Leslie sounds.
BOSS Dimension C is one of my favorite choruses. Easy to use and so warm.
that Arion did sound beautiful...liked the TC a whole lot as well...but that Dimension C is PERFECTION! Nice job Josh...really enjoy all your vids.
Pleasantly surprised to see the Ibanez DCL Digital Stereo Chorus getting some love here! Great pedal, but very little written about it online. Another reason that this channel is such a valuable resource.
Such a great video. Exceedingly informative! I have always enjoyed the chorus sound and so appreciate being enlightened to so many other wonderful chorus pedals. Thank you. I have the Strymon Ola on my electric pedalboard and the MXR chorus on my acoustic pedalboard. It may be time for a change now that my mind has been expanded.
The number 3 setting on the Dimension is just so perfect.
I think 2 is perfect for faster tunes, 3 is perfect for slower. I tend to use 2 for jaunty Smiths songs and such, but for “Purple Rain” or something, 3 is IT.
I have a CE3 for years and I love it. Thanks Josh nice video.
Me too. My mate on guitar had a CE 2 Boss e I always the CE 3 . I like both, but prefer the CE 3. Am I sort of wrong with that?
@@alexandrepontes4003 CE3 is a great chorus. I have been using for about 14 years. it´s always om my setup. About CE 2, i never used, so i cannot compare between both units. nice week buddy.
Luv all the history involved with these pedals, companies, and sounds!
Really enjoying these videos. Managed to find an old Pearl chorus pedal from the mid 1980s, same model I had when I was 17 years old. Plugging in to that old pedal and hearing it change my guitar’s tone after all these years was nothing short of magical. I could almost smell the hair spray! :-D
Thanks for the great videos, and btw nice guitar playing too! 👍
Man, when I heard Alex Lifeson's guitar parts on Hemispheres I nearly lost my mind. Later, when I started playing guitar I sought the CE-1.
Man, I thought I had the chorus thing going on, when I finally got that vintage JC120, Everything works great except for the chorus.
I guess I'm still looking.
Me too. He is Phenomenal. Love Alex Lifeson.
@@michael_caz_nyc Amen!
haha.....yeah after I watched this vid I went straight for "Before and After".....his tone is priceless and timeless
@@hoboroadie Please Listen to me . . . Try the F.T.T. Tri Avatar if you want to Nail Every Lifeson Tone. I play Tons of Rush covers. I Tried (and/or) had Everything: CE-1, CE-2. Ibanez Bi Mode Chorus. The Tri Avatar is " SICK " - unless you want the Landau Sound, (80's Rack Chorus) = then you need The Shiva Little Wave Chorus from Italy.
CE-2 and Dimension C on my board at all times. Fantastic sounds.
I love chorus! It's a must to have in your pedalboard . It sounds as a space trip in a dimension's dream.
I know this is an old video, but thanks for the recommendation of the Japanese House. They’re amazing! I’ve got a lot of catching up to do now. Your album recommendations are a great little addition to your videos. Thanks again.
20:03 A thousand Dimebag fans just cried out in unison, "That's it!"
I bought an Ibanez CS9 in the early 80's and used it a lot at the time. I also has a Tascam Portastudio and used the CS9 as an effect on that. It worked well, especially for background vocal parts. I still have the CS9 but don't use it much. On my board now I have an MXR Carbon Copy. The modulation switch adds a chorus effect. I also use an MXR Phase 95. Together they sound really good.
i owned a roland phase shifter. i bought it some time between 1976 and 1978. i remember it had 2 pots and on off switch. i have never seen one since. unfortunately i sold it years ago. i never seen or heard you demo or mention this pedal. i know how much you love pedals wanted to bring this to light to you. even though it's the only thing i knew, that you didn't know. (raspberry). you have taught me so much that i think i owe you something. i hope you can find one of these and demo it. i would love to see and hear one again after all these years.
Cool video, waiting for one on the flanger!
I love the ibanez cs9 had one on my board for about 18 year. Recently bought the Boss Waza, love that to.
I've bought a DOD pedal called Ice Box some 15 years ago. It is a very high quality pedal. I still use it.
Love these videos. Appreciate all the history and the humor!
I bought a (new retired - lousy connections) BOSS CE2 back in 1981, thinking it was the best thing ever. I am impressed that you include the Detune/Chorus function in the Whammy pedal. I now have a Mk 5 version and thought that the chorus is pretty decent - glad you think the same. Cheers.
Glad to see a DOD FX-65! Just picked one up after seeing it on the TPS episode where ProGuitarShop/Reverb Andy showed his board. I've always liked all those classic chorus sounds but never managed to dial one in that I actually liked for myself, until this pedal. That delay time control seems to be unusual and it just lets me get to something special I've not been able to before. I'm glad I could get in on this while they're available cheaply as I fully expect everyone to suddenly realise how good they are.
Excellent ! I have one in mint condition boxed with the schematic ,I bought 33 years ago .. unfortunately it doesn't work any longer & my local tech had no clue ?!! From memory it was sweet 👍
I still use my FX64. I've owned it since 1996.
I did the exact same thing after the TPS episode. Got one for a steal. it's on my board now and I'm loving it
In 1985 I got a Fender Squire Bullet, Boss CE-2 and a Univox EC-80 tape echo... and all was right in the world.
Thank you, for this history lesson!
It's good to learn / remember where all stuff, we think of as granded today, come from! 👏👏👏
I’m not sure what video it was that you posted but your demo of the Blue Hippo pedal was the deciding factor for me picking out my chorus pedal!
Turnover's "Peripheral Vision" was done through a JC120 and the chorus was never turned off. Such a masterpiece of a record.
Thanks for putting me onto this awesome album!
There is a Polish band from the 80s that used the Chorus and its sound is imprinted in my mind. Lady Pank - Kryzysowa Narzeczona. Great channel by the way. You dragged me to this guitar pedal rabbit hole and I cannot get out:)
For some unknown reason I've got a Lady Pank album - I don't know why or how. It's just sitting there in my record collection. For like years and years. I'm not Polish, I'm English. Never been to Poland.
Maybe I'll listen to it one day.
@@Landmaaler don't know what album you got, but in my opinion some of their songs are worth listening to :D
I love the way Broadcast and Melody's Echo Chamber used whatever vintage effect they use to make their dreamy pop.
I love the 4 setting on the Chorus, especially with the 2 and 4 on. I think of this as the Prince of Pedals. I love the fact the Dimension has a bit more subtlety. And I kind of appreciate it as much or more for the fact it can bring a mono sound to life in a stereo field, but still keep the character of the original in the center. It's nice on a send, when you can control how subtle that effect is. Love it on my mono Moog Grandmother. And sounds good on background vocals too.
My Chorus pedal is a DOD "Super Stereo Chorus" FX-68 from the 90´s. I don´t know if it is a legendary pedal or a vintage one, but I love the way it sounds. I have strong feelings with this pedal, because it was the very first that I owned: when I was at the university, one of my fellow coleagues sold it to me for $65, back in 1996.
Dimension C forever! The sound of chorus in the 80's! Classic!
Recorded "Never Say Never" with that Boss Chorus CE-1 (silver screw). What a great pedal!
Great video. Thanks for producing it.
Great Video as usual! I use the Moog Minifooger and Moogerfooger Choruses and i love the sound and tweakability. The Mini can self oscillate quite heavily which sounds great with Guitar and Synth. I also use a Stereo Memory Man which seems to phase cancel in stereo mode. Sounds cool ;)
YES! You included the detune effect! TBH I hate chorus, but am sold on that effect (i know it's pretty much chorus). That effect is also housed solely in the Digitech Luxe.
I ordered my CE-2w today! I am so excited.
I love chorus so so much! My fav is the TC Electronic SCF! But I am starting to dig the Waza Dimension D. And totally blown away by the chorus sound of the Whammy pedal!!!! I own version 2 and had no idea it was capable of that sweet chorus sound! Thanks for this!
Ryan Adams self titled record has some of the greatest chorus sounds known to man and cats. 😻
Yes, it does
The Small Clone has been on my board for years now, the best secret for super unique sounding feedback.
However you caught my love of the classic 80's guitar sound with that Boss dimension C, so I think that may be next on my list.
TC Electronic's Dimension C is a really good clone. You can't go wrong for 60 bucks.
@@andrewzimmerman6059 I was going to say the same thing. I think that it is a fantastic pedal and very inexpensive. I use mine with only the first button engaged or no buttons pushed in. . It gives a subtle shimmer to your clean sound.
The ol Dimension C brings back memories. TY JHS.
Ofc this video wasn't about flanger pedals, but whenever I think of Chorus pedals my mind goes straight to the Fulltone Choralflange. I love that thing
First pedal I ever bought wasn't an overdrive. It was a DOD FX65 Stereo Chorus.
Hobby Knight meee tooo!!! I still have it and the box and the warranty card !!! 😂
Also - envelope filter
Overdrive
American metal and
Hard rock distortion
I still have them all !!!
Back in the 80’s I thought DOD was the S#*+!!!!
I still have that pedal
Love chorus on 80's New Wave bass sounds.
If you can find one, the chorus circuit on the Boss PlayBus HA5 headphone amp is very sweet and wide due to its stereo configuration. It has two sliders: Depth and Rate. It has a stereo CE2 sound at lower settings, a rotary/Leslie quality at around max, with a few unique sounds of its own. I used it for tracking ideas to the recording desk via the headphone jack adapted to RCA stereo into the recorder, in the same way I used the "Rockman II B" in its "Rockmount" to double track rhythm and arpeggiated parts for pseudo 12 string effects. The HA5 also has a 30 ms slapback/doubling delay, and a very good Overdrive circuit. It can sound like "The Ocean" by Led Zeppelin.
Just so you know, I’ve had the Japanese House on repeat since I heard about her from you. Great stuff!
Boy Pablo is a band that uses chorus really well. They have a nice clean soft rock sound!
"Derridadive"
When French Poststructuralists go swimming, they start with a Derrida Dive.
Matt Gilbert HAHAHAHAHA
Me as a calc 2 student: ah yes, derridadive
I like the way you rep these pedals. The original whammy really caught my ear. The chorus on the original was a godsend to me, way back when.
Awesome video. I fell in love with the Ibanez one!
Knew we would hear "Come As You Are" at some point - just a question of how far into the video.
I'm glad someone else feels the same way about the DOD FX 65. Its my favorite chorus pedal. I've tried all of the big names (Retro Chorus, Strymon, Analog Man, Tortuga) and spent a lot of money but I keep going back to this pedal. Its sound is so wide. Great for cleans in a cover band. It also adds a slight volume boost so you can piss off the sound man. I find when I play live I leave this pedal on 90% of the time. Sounds great with distortion. I cant believe these are still so cheap. Thanks for the video I'm a chorus junkie.
Yes!
I have a 1985 Ibanez UE-405. It has a Compressor, parametric EQ, a chorus, and the AD-9 Delay. It also has a send return for a 5th effect. I use lexicon racks in the 5th. It’s sweet! I use it with my fender Rhodes, the chorus sounds great!
I have been using the Ibanez C9 lavender pedal since 1982 but the love the boss chorus, I am getting an Angry driver this week as well. I am really interested in a JHS amp, looking up your vids now. Luv this channel, don't ever change!
Boss ch1 super chorus ! This pedal has been on my board for ever
Agree. Surprised this was not on the list
LOVED this episode. Chorus is probably my favorite modulation effect. I currently have a Red Witch Empress on my board which I absolutely love.
I really appreciate the way Tame Impala uses modulation in his music. I hear more phaser than chorus I think, but he uses that phaser in a way that doesn’t sound cheesy to me, which is usually how I interpret a phaser lol.
I have a Red Witch Empress as well and find it amazing. Have you tried running the wet/dry outputs into dual amps? Righteous Tones!
You have no ides how thankful I am that you covered Ibanez's bi-mod chorus. I picked it up years ago because it is a pedal that Korn used/uses . I have been trying to figure out undoubtedly exactly what it does. Others and I have had our guesses and assumptions but, Ive mever known for sure what is going on inside the pedal. So, know I know. Its two identical cs9 circuits operating separately but, together. You are very much appreciated. Your vids are invaluable.
The Dimension C got to my soul and that’s my pick. I bought one back in the mid 80’s and it had a super lush sound and no pesky knobs. I foolishly sold it on eBay about 20 years ago when I thought rack gear was the way to go. I also had a CE-1 but traded that for an 82 Tube Screamer! Love your super knowledgeable videos.
Dimension C. Just a great sound with minimum options anxiety!
I've been unable to remember for the life of me what chorus pedal I had in the 80's. I was still in high school, so it was 1983 at the latest. My assumption was always that it was a CE-2, because I remember that powder blue color and it's what everybody had. But my memory is that it was stereo out and had a delay time knob. The more I've thought about it the more I'm convinced this was the case. I can epsecially remember turning the delay time up and the rate and depth way down and getting a fat doubling sound that was great on overdriven tones. So after spending some time poking around online, the best candidate I can come up with is the DOD 565-A. It's powder blue, has stereo outs and a delay time control, and I think it was released in 1981. Plus I'm certain that my music store only carried MXR, EH, DOD and Boss pedals. I know it wasn't MXR or EH, and the more I think about it the more I think I didn't want anything Boss. I think I thought the name sounded cheesy. Stupid reason to not want a chorus pedal, but hey I was 17. Anyway, I have no Idea what happened to it. It was one of only three pedals I had back then, along with an MXR Distortion+ and an EH Electric Mistress. No Boss : )
Nice to hear all the pedals in one place.
Revisiting this great video! Thank you for introducing me to the Japanese house a few years back!
Also always lived using the detune on the whammy. Would love a CE1
That pedal show! Great shout out
"back in the day", as teen guitar player, I had original BOSS Spectrum/Phaser/Distortion, and CE-2....of the four, I have only my original CE-2, and how thankful I am....that little blue box is just sheer magic.....
I’ve got the Arion stereo chorus and absolutely love it. I’ve had it for two years and it’s not leaving my pedalboard anytime soon.
Put a Lo Jack on it anyways.
The Ibanez CS9 was Kim Thayil's (SOUNDGARDEN) first pedal. It can be heard on their Screaming Life and Ultramega OK albums.
Dimension C really grabbed me. The Guyatone and the Boss CE-1 also sounded great but the Dimension C just sounds exactly like that era of music. I might have to get all three in that order, or your pedal which sounds like it does the job well.
As for bands done that sound now: Be Forest from Italy uses it tastefully in a brit-pop/dream pop/shoegazer way. I like them a lot but mostly they just remind me how much I love Lush
That mode four on the Dimension D made me instantly think of Cocteau Twins.
In stereo with two amps it’s the best by far. Really great stereo separation. For a single amp get the ce2w.
I had a Boss CE3 stereo chorus for my 14th Birthday 1980 . Never used the stereo just liked the metallic blue and gigged with it for 20 years no problem . Also an Ibanez DDL delay pedal a Boss octave and a RAT pedal . Sorted !
Love your shows man... thanks for sharing. Gonna buy one of your brand someday... and of course I'll review it... lol
Thanks for keeping things honest - with a nice dose of humor.
Keep rockin
I have always been a fan of Boss choruses, but closest to my heart has always been the Boss Digital Dimension DC-3. It's the most natural sounding chorus effect pedal I've ever used, and it was love at first sight when I tested it at the end of 80´s.
It's still my main chorus unit after these years, and it will remain in my pedal board althought other pedals will change.
It gives a very wide three- dimensional sound used in stereo with 2 amplifiers, but it's wonderful even in mono, without fluttering and vibrato.
It was in production a very short time at the 80´s, and it's quite a rare chorus unit in nowtimes. And no, my DC-3 in not for sale...
