You know you're good mates when someone else turns your volume pot down. Love it. Mick is always conscious of recording levels and Dan doesn't even blink. One mind in two bodies.
I still have the CE-2 my Mom bought for me in 1985 from Thoroughbred Music in Tampa, FL. It was my only chorus pedal until around 2013. The thing I notice about the CE-2 is that it gives me a bit of a volume boost when it is engaged. But it has always been the best chorus sound I have ever had!
@cobowe Good news! BOSS have released the RE-2 and RE-202 pedals, which are a dead-on sonic re-creation of the old Roland RE-201 Space Echo tape unit. Stack a CE-2W switched to CE-1 chorus mode in front of an RE-2 or RE-202 and Bob's your uncle. Another option with this setup is to parallel blend the chorus and delay with a BOSS LS-2 line selector pedal in A+B mix mode. Total cost: between $480 and $760, depending on which pedals you go with. Still far less than the minimum $1,795 that Reverb sellers are currently asking for functioning RE-301's.
Once again, Dan transcends what I believe is possible. I ALWAYS learn something new. I used to hate chorus, but his older video and this one made me love chorus. His old Chorus Ensemble is amazing! One thing old pedals do great is they make your core tone sound good when you dig in!
Mick so nearly slipped into who can it be now, love it. Those midnight oil tones are unreal too, so underrated in this country. I too stupidly sold a ce2... Well not stupidly, bills needed paying but I'm now very glad there is something to fill the void.
Another great show guys! I don't play guitar (I'm a bassplayer) but still watch your shows because they're informative, fun and such a labour of love. Keep it up!
I sold my old CE-1 to a local shop and it has been languishing in the pedal case, unpurchased, for some time now.... and I really want to go buy it back now. Thanks a lot :)
I find the brief exchange at 11:18 utterly disturbing...and that sort of mania is a huge reason I love this channel so much. We all need a little analysis. And thanks for the mini-demonstration with the delay to explain chorusing.
+Bruce Johnson Hahahah! Dan and I were having a discussion that relates to this just today. It's to do with the difference of being excited and inspired by something, and trying to demonstrate something that you're not really interested in. We're going to become increasingly disinterested in stuff that doesn't interest us, because neither of us have enough hours left in our lives to devote to stuff that does. (How's that for a sentence?) So yeah, that Totally Impractical Pedalboard challenge is currently riding much higher on the list than 'WTF didn't you include the //insert random chorus pedal here// video. Hooray for being inspired. Yawn to making pragmatic choices.
There's your next video idea - a pedalboard of amazing but impractical gear (big Boss chorus, tape echo, big box Big Muff, etc.). All the biggest, most amazing, most impractical gear you can find. Slap it all on a Pedaltrain pro.
Now you nailed the Voice mic volume guys! Some of your last vids were a little hard to hear you talking, but this one, spot on! Tks for another great one! Cheers
I was working while listening to this shootout. Didn't catch what these guys said, but when the sound of the BOSS CE-1 out, I just stop working and came to check which pedal it was. I guess there is indeed something special in the vintage pedal.
I ordered my CE-2w today....I can't wait! I personally don't care for the breakup on the original on the CE-1, but the chorus sound of the CE-1 is the best.
This episode will be my happy place for a good while. The Boss CE2 was my gateway into playing guitar simply because my early 80s budget strat knock off had appalling tuning issues and using chorus made the sound much more palatable. Lovely to hear the JC120 in action as well and even today, nothing really comes close to that epic chorus width that the twin speaker setup imparts. Excellent stuff as always chaps.
favourite video so far chaps. honourable mention for the old mij pearl ch01 which kicked an analogman bichorus off my board and is my personal desert island pedal.
I actually can't stand chorus at all. And yet, here I am happily enjoying you guys go on about it for 45 minutes straight. I love what you're doing. And because of this, consider yourselves Patreon-ed!
If you can find a Roland Guitar System GS6 rack unit it contains four different Chorus models including the original CE1, CE2, Chorus Ensemble, and later Roland Jazz Chorus amp models. The GS6 has fully adjustable delay times, depth, speed, panning stereo options and stereo placement options. It can be thought of as Jazz Chorus Amp in rack form. The delay time and reverb section can achieve flanging, through-zero flanging, Leslie Rotary, and Uni-Vibe type sounds. The delay section has panning, e.q. control, types of delay including tape style, and the reverb section is fantastic, including the Spring Reverb model. The effects can be route in various configurations. It's a recommended secondhand purchase for Roland Chorus fans. It also has rotary controls and 64 memory slots. The preamp models are pretty good too.
Wow CE-1 = instand Cyndi Lauper "Time After Time" tone....so many classics written on that pedal. Really amazing and intelligent video guys, first time viewing, awesome comparisons with the genuine articles. Couldn't think of a better way to do it if I tried, so informative. Thank you!
ianA You can certainly get the same effect for that song through a Ce-1 or something like it. However, the Publison DHM 89 b2 is the rack unit used on Time After Time, and all over the She’s So Unusual record. The engineer did an interview online about it. It’s an amazing unit, and utilizes more of the delay type chorus.
Hi Guys - another great show. When I researched for a substitute for my beloved CE1, I found the Retro Sonic CE-1. To me it is "exactly" the same as the old Boss CE1, but without the noise, and running on 9 volt, standard. The guy who made it also supplied a "how to" remove one resistance, depending on if I wanted the original high-cut from the old Boss or a more neutral sound from the Retro Sonic. I haven't heard the new, more grey colored version he is building now, but the first original, came really close, and sounded better than the new Boss products to my worn out ears :-) Ok, is doesn't have the input gain issue, some love ... :-) Another small comment - to my ears, it sound like the Waza has slightly longer delay, than the CE2 ... seems (at least in this video) that the chorused signal is a little longer away from the original signal on the Waza. So the dobbling effect gets a little stronger from the Waza and therefor slightly more crispy?!?! Haven't heard them any of the two in real world - just an impression from you excellent work. All the very best - Soren BTW - Very nice to say hello to you when you visited Copenhagen - cheers S
I was actually shocked when I heard that there is a decent number of people who talk trash about chorus. I always figured it was one of the standard effects on basically everybody's pedalboard.
The Meister Singer chorus is a real sleeper! I've had so many. Pay 300 dollars for your chorus and go back and listen to that 100.00 pedal. You will not be dissapointed.
I have to confess;I really do love chorus,or rather,anything that simulates a Leslie.In the '60(yes,I'm old)it was a Guild RotoVerb.I went through 3,since they were the original gooped-up pedal & could not be repaired.The mid'70s saw a Maestro Phase shifter;3 speeds with ramp up & down.The early '80s saw a souped-up Strat(Lawrence Blades & an Alembic Stratoblaster)with,yes,a Boss CE-1through an EP-3.My Adrian Belew period.Still have the CE-1.Then a soul band,so a Boss CE-3,for it's size.When it finally developed a bit of tone suck,I went to a TC Corona. But now,I've transitioned to a Leslie simulator,a DLS RotoSIM.It produces a very reasonable Leslie,& is tweakable. Maybe a Leslie simulator comparison?
I was given a CE-2 in 2003 and used to run it with a Cool Cat. One was set fast and the other slower. I wish I had never traded it. The Angel Wing sounds amazing for the money. Can nail those Gilmour, Summers and Lifeson sounds.
Had to pick one up although i have a JC77. Sky King is my main amp, and to do it with two amps for the one effect....i end up having to use 3 mics, and a switcher for one effect. This just lets me pop it on the board, it's in mono and gives me the sound. Or just split it and use two mics... one for tone king and one for JC77 on normal. In studio though sometimes i favor the amp to record. But playing live or jamming with friends, lugging two amps with more mic channels not ideal. The ce2w just does the thing well, and does more....but pricey to me. Almost made me say screw it, grab a space echo instead!
I cannot answer that without knowing your rig details. But...my CE-2 (Batch#200 *pre-serial number!!* ) sounds better than the Waza imho The Maxon Ambient Stereo Chorus is also worth a look. Brett Kingman has a nice demo on youtube,
Andertons did this with on their channel when they first came out. Only one I remember was the Blues driver which there was basically zero noticeable difference between the waza and the regular standard one (at least on youtube).
I used to have the CE2 and loved it, but sold it. I watched this video when it came out and loved the Waza and finally got one this week. I love it and I hear what you are saying about the CE1 with the overdrive thing, but you can get that with other pedals, boosts in to the chorus to acheive that. And Boss pedals are indestructible, I still have a SD1 33 years old.
Hi Mick, Dan-- I realize you get a lot of compliments on the show, but have to tell you it really clicked for me recently. Pedals are the great equalizer between the guitars/amps you have and the tone you seek. No pedal is better/worse than the other; some simply deliver the tone desired given a certain set of equipment. Your show has been illustrative to say the least. I believe it antiquates the standard "pedal-demo" genre of videos to a great measure. Thanks for all the insights.
+northof50now Thank you for that. That is exactly the point! Demos are good as part of anybody's research, and hopefully TPS is another valuable part of it. We can never be the whole story though, and of course we are all still learning. It's a fun journey!
Well I finally did it. I've tried to find a suitable substitute, but I've finally just accepted the truth and I've caved and bought a ce-1. Can't wait for it to get here 😊
Martin Rotsey also used a CE1 with white strat and twin AC30s especially great on place w/o a postcard and 10 to 1. Cant decide between Jim or Marty as my favourite. Martins best stuff is pre red sails.
Hi, guys! I know you guys have not covered this in this video, but it'd be great to get your guys' thoughts on the Strymon Ola Chorus & Vibrato pedal. I think it's one of the least-talked about chorus/vibrato pedals as well as one of the most underrated Strymon pedals and not many videos have covered this pedal as much. Thanks so much to you both. Cheers from California. -David
I got my CE-2 after seeing David Lindley and El Rayo-X in the early '80's. He had his set with the Rate at 10:30 and Depth at 2:00 give or take a few minutes. That's where I almost always put it and it's a great rhythm guitar tone. If I were to go out and buy a new chorus the Waza would be my first one to try, but the Free the Tone would be an option if it were in my budget. Keep up the good work guys!
I have played every pedal featured here except for Tone City and an original CE-1. The CE-2w is currently on my board. Analogman an amazing pedal, but I wanted a very specific tone. The Boss is THE pedal for the 80's chorus sounds. Running a low gain OD in front of the CE-1 setting nails that sound. I'm surprised the Small Clone wasn't covered more, it is a classic analog circuit that is inexpensive and sounds great.
Through my headphones I couldn't hear the difference between the CE-2 original or the Waza version. However, the Waza CE-1 is a very sweet sound. Bottom line: all three Waza sounds are very nice and very usable.
Excellent episode, even for me being not a chorus fan. That Wazacraft is a gem! Free-the-tone is a very interesting one (everything that guy builds is simply put: superb). Thank you Mick & Dan.
Hey guys, there were some sentences in this show, that made me think - Like the occasional "I got that on my board", "The Chorus that I use" and of course "Not because I'm an idiot, it's because I'm usually singing" - So what we all NEED to know is how your everyday rigs and gigging situations are, which Amps and Pedals do you take to what kind of gigs (...style of music, kind of band, size of venue, temper of promoter...). But maybe this post is redundant because it is all coming along in the "Guitars & Gear"-Videos. Anyway, what a great way to start a lazy sunday with two or three mugs of coffee and listening to you guys tinkering away with some lovely wobbly sounds. Thanks so much and Cheers!
+Thomas Lange Cheers Thomas. Dan has a run of gigs coming up with his band Tin Spirits so maybe there's a show there. Both of our boards change almost daily - to the point where I don't really have one at all - so doing a show would be instantly out of date. If we have projects on the go, maybe we could focus on the stuff chosen, that might work. I tend to do last minute fill-ins and the odd mates reunion for fun; parties, open mics maybe, but aside from that I lost a lot of love for playing live in bands regularly a few years ago. Haven't really put it back together since! Cheers.
My dad had an 80s Japan CE-2 until last year and he sold it. Couldn't believe it. Grew up playing Come As You Are on that thing. Even he says "why did I sell it?" Oh well, at least I can buy a Waza.
I personally love my Keeley Seafoam Chorus. One of the cleanest digital chorus pedals I've heard. It emulates an analog chorus, like a CE-1 & CE-2, very well. It's not overly bright or metallic at all.
Just found this channel. What a great pair of guys. Really enjoyed the video. No smart ass ego nonsense. Just honest and thorough comparisons as if you're right here in my own living room. Keep up the terrific work, fellas. Greetings from Brisbane.
I owned the CE-3, and also had a JC-120. I have to say that I never looked back (pedal-wise) when the DC-2 came out. Blew them away. in terms of racks, the Sony M7 is the real deal.
There's a lot of confusion going on around Roland JC120 fixed chorus. The Speed and Depth knobs only work for Vibrato mode which led people to believe that the Vibrato Mode is just a manual chorus mode. If that is true, then CE-1 and CE-2 Waza have Vibrato mode that original Roland JC120 doesn't have.
Great show guys! My pedal board claim to fame is that my Boss CE-2 was previously owned by the guitarist of 90's 1 hit wonder band Stiltskin. Love it to bits. :)
Watching it five years on, this vid got me wondering if any of the boutique pedal companies have released a properly accurate (or perhaps to acknowledge how difficult it is to recreate old stuff, an even more accurate) version of the CE-1 since it was published? The Waza, whilst good, just doesn't do it once you've heard that intro sound.
After watching one of these episodes I feel like I have a very deep understanding of how pedals work. And then when I'm tweaking my own pedals I stare at them and say good enough and start playing.
The CE-1 sim on the waza is probably close to how a CE-1 sounds when you swap the pot for a guitar friendly one. Some prefer it but it also takes some of the grit away
We are so spoiled. Not only can one easily buy these old pedals, but also there are plenty of MN3007 remakes/clones out there too. Retro Sound makes a CE-1 type deal, there is also Coppersound Polaris, LongAmp The Abyss (CE-2) and Long Amp Nirvana which is an OG Small Clone with depth knob. All MN3007. I’m not even a guitar player, but I love the show, because I love guitar pedals on my synthesizers. The Chase Bliss pedals really merit an entire episode all their own. What can be done with lag controls, expression pedals, and MIDI is just a whole other level. AND they sound really good. They require some digging in. One needs to be a bit of a sound design guru to get into them, but they are a lot of fun. Others? Fairfield Circuits Shallow Water, amazing! Random modulation anyone? Moog Clusterflux? TC SCF+? Walrus Julia? EQD Sea Machine? Diamond Halo Chorus? I mist say though, that the Waza ain’t bad at all. Sounded much better than I thought it would. Also, in recent years, I would have NEVER reached for a digital chorus, but must admit they are getting really good. Even TC Corona, Free the Tone played here, and a few others are quite good.
Now check out the giants of rack chorus: Roland Dimention D, tc electronic stereo chorus/flanger expander and a DyTronics Tri Stereo Chorus or a Fulltone terc!
45 min on Chorus. Reminded of why I love this show. Awesome stuff.
Its awesome!! And i dont even like chorus pedals
Someone always beats me to the comment I want to leave...lol
You know you're good mates when someone else turns your volume pot down. Love it. Mick is always conscious of recording levels and Dan doesn't even blink. One mind in two bodies.
Very interested in the CE-2w after watching this. Surprised that to me it actually sounded *better* than the original pedals
The demonstration of how Chorus works using a delay pedal was genius!
+Ty Barnes Yep - like a low mid kick or something. I like it for that!
The face on Daniel when he imagined the CE-1 with a Tape Delay...Priceless!
I used to have a Roland 301
Which is exactly that!!
They are stupid money now
@cobowe Good news!
My BOSS Me-2 is something else...been rocking with it for the 35+ years of it and it has never let me down
All this chorus, and not one Johnny Marr riff. ;-)
That has got to be punishable by law somewhere...
Heaven knows I'm miserable now.
Seriously!! Marr made chorus sound so cool
little did they know...
Once again, Dan transcends what I believe is possible. I ALWAYS learn something new. I used to hate chorus, but his older video and this one made me love chorus. His old Chorus Ensemble is amazing! One thing old pedals do great is they make your core tone sound good when you dig in!
My missus says it's not a chorus pedal unless it's light blue.
+Darryld1 She is obviously a wonderful woman.
I also rigged her up with a Waza switch and now she also modulates in pitch as well as in time. Who knew?
I knew.
@@Ravensongcalvinbatley Everyone knew except Darryl.
She modulates harder when i activate her flange
Mick so nearly slipped into who can it be now, love it. Those midnight oil tones are unreal too, so underrated in this country. I too stupidly sold a ce2... Well not stupidly, bills needed paying but I'm now very glad there is something to fill the void.
Yeah absolutely. Listen to the tones on Place Without A Postcard and there is some sick chorus + distortion going on.
How to start my Friday before classes?
With a little bit of Dan and Mick.
I've watched this twice now...I just ordered a Waza! WAZZZAAAAA! Thanks guys! I'll buy a tee-shirt next!
Oh my god! Both of your faces at the prospect of the CE-1 with a Tape Delay. I'm impressed that you didn't stop filming right then and go and play!
For me, this is for sure my favorite episode. I got the Waza and it fits like a glove for me. I love hearing those comparisons between the three.
Question! Do you use the Waza in mono out? Or stereo out? Does it really matter?
The first pedal I bought with my first ever paycheck in the 80's was a CE2 and it's still on my board today. Love it.
I find the brief exchange at 11:18 utterly disturbing...and that sort of mania is a huge reason I love this channel so much. We all need a little analysis. And thanks for the mini-demonstration with the delay to explain chorusing.

the CE - 1 will always be the best for me, not only for the chorus but the level control as well
Once again great show. This is becoming a dangerous $150 / week habit. Brilliant playing. Thank you.
There's your next video idea - a pedalboard of amazing but impractical gear (big Boss chorus, tape echo, big box Big Muff, etc.). All the biggest, most amazing, most impractical gear you can find. Slap it all on a Pedaltrain pro.
+Adam K We love this...
That Pedal Show Yeah! Get to it, fellas
Korg Miku Stomp Pedal!
dont forget an enormous old echoplex
Ronan Adam, I agree! Tiny pedals that are amazing like the TS mini and the Ditto. Really good, usable mini pedals.
Now you nailed the Voice mic volume guys! Some of your last vids were a little hard to hear you talking, but this one, spot on! Tks for another great one! Cheers
My God, I love that JC-120 clean chorus tone; simply sublime.
I love Midnight Oil getting a mention, one of my favourite bands.
I was working while listening to this shootout. Didn't catch what these guys said, but when the sound of the BOSS CE-1 out, I just stop working and came to check which pedal it was. I guess there is indeed something special in the vintage pedal.
Just received a CE-1 from VRM Effect and came all the way back here to enjoy myself with chorusy episode. HAPPY DAYS!
I ordered my CE-2w today....I can't wait! I personally don't care for the breakup on the original on the CE-1, but the chorus sound of the CE-1 is the best.
I think with a GE-7 after you could easily make your CE-2W sound exactly like the original. Maybe a boost before to get the CE-1 grind?
This episode will be my happy place for a good while. +eDWICHt Thank you so much!
Hey Daniel, Wosa from Guitar Crazy Sydney. Saying Hello and thanks for the shoutout! Love the show!
+WosaMusic cheers Wosa!! :)
Can't stop watching your show.
finally know how to what to look for in a guitar pedal.
Jim Mogine is genius, he used chorus so well .... .....” short memory “ what a great track

Ahh that makes me so happy.. Everytime I play through my chorus pedal I always play the intro to the crowded house song Don't dream its over.
That was in this. But I think Simon cut it. He was bored of endless 80s references and felt like we’d made the point.
Ok, that's it... I'm subscribing! A channel dedicated to guitar effects pedals? HELL YEAH!
you guys should totally do a live show! with special guests and house band everything!
+Mark Mai That would awesome. Maybe one day, if funds and time ever allow!
Mick’s expression at 3:58 is great! I love that crunchy CE-1 and it sure seemed to surprise the hell out of Mick!
Man, as much as I dig Chorus, I don't dig it. Then you play it and make it sound great again. That Boss Waza pedal is sick!
Dan absolutely KILLING echo beach! Best intro ever.
Mick accidentally buys another guitar:
"It's from the cheap range..."
I think we've all used that line😀
Hey, _technically_ the SG is the cheap range... of vintage Gibson Les Pauls 👀
If my wife doesn't know the going rate for a '61 well that's on her

bloody love this channel guys, keep up the great work!!!
Would really like to hear the TC Electronic Stereo Chorus/Flanger (SCF) on the show some day.
"One day we've got to set that (Boss CE-1) up with the tape delay (the Echoplex?)"
PLEASE DO IT in the future!!!
Cheers
That and the Electric Mistress.

Just got my 1981 MIJ black label CE-2 (METAL screw on battery cover, none of this rubber sleeve nonsense).
It's soooo beautiful.
+Matt Gilbert Mmmmmmm. Nice find that man!
I sold mine... doh!!! should i get a waza?
I cannot answer that without knowing your rig details.
But...my CE-2 (Batch#200 *pre-serial number!!* ) sounds better than the Waza imho
The Maxon Ambient Stereo Chorus is also worth a look. Brett Kingman has a nice demo on youtube,
+That Pedal Show indeed!
I have been a CE-2 fan but the Callisto is something that might put a smile on your faces :)
Love to see more comparisons between original BOSS products and the Waza Craft stuff.
+John Falk Good news John, we have most of them now so expect that to start happening. :0)
These two are very well-versed on Canadian artist. Respect.
Echo Beach!!! 🤘
Can't wait for it to get here 😊
Love the snippet of Echo Beach!
Martin Rotsey also used a CE1 with white strat and twin AC30s especially great on place w/o a postcard and 10 to 1. Cant decide between Jim or Marty as my favourite. Martins best stuff is pre red sails.
i watched the video of your session at CPH guitar show it was great, hope you will go there again next year !
+Paul Honeycutt Spoooky - I was listening to that record just yesterday! (Mick here)
Well, now you know how to set your chorus when you try to cop those licks through your Dumble. ;-)
Free the Tone for me. I'm with Mick. Easy and most usable to me.
The Electromatic! Congrats, Mick. That's a beauty.
+Adam K Just spoke to me. Sounds sooooo good with gain.
Even he says "why did I sell it?"
Oh well, at least I can buy a Waza.
Dan, I also like the fact that it sound like you have an od when you dig in
Yep, it’s a massive part of the CE1 sound
I personally love my Keeley Seafoam Chorus. One of the cleanest digital chorus pedals I've heard. It emulates an analog chorus, like a CE-1 & CE-2, very well. It's not overly bright or metallic at all.
+TheProgGuy Roberts stuff is so great. What a legend
Not sure if the Jeff Healey impression was appropriate, but it was spot on.
Just found this channel. What a great pair of guys. Really enjoyed the video. No smart ass ego nonsense. Just honest and thorough comparisons as if you're right here in my own living room. Keep up the terrific work, fellas. Greetings from Brisbane.
+Sixth Sanctum Thank you! Dan is from Brisbane y'know. Greetings to all down under!
Hmmm, so that´s 2 waza pedals that are going to be on my board, the DM-2w sounds awesome too, to me...
I owned the CE-3, and also had a JC-120. I have to say that I never looked back (pedal-wise) when the DC-2 came out. Blew them away. in terms of racks, the Sony M7 is the real deal.
oh, the mxr stereo chorus is no slouch either!
The CE-1 IS Chorus. Once you’ve heard it, everything else sounds like a copy. It’s amazing that one pedal can be that definitive.
It is nice to see that great tone smile... That is what love is all about.. lol
please never stop.
That analog man bi chorus just screamed Alice in chains to me. Awesome.
The slight overdrive on the original CE-1 would drive me crazy.
That's part of the CE-1 sound. If you're playing through a pair of cranked Marshall amps, the overdrive helps.
What a difference six years make...yall look totally different
I've been so looking forward to this one guys!
Thanx for all the great videos you 2. I have learned so much, and continue to be educated and entertained by you guys.
+Sean Mahoney Thank you Sean!
A video on some Univibe pedals would be cool.
love your show. I have an old Ibanez CS9 Chorus from the 80s but sadly its dead. just like the music . RIP
The CE-1 sim on the waza is probably close to how a CE-1 sounds when you swap the pot for a guitar friendly one. Some prefer it but it also takes some of the grit away
No need to swap the pot..
Just put a buffer in front
And keep it Stock... it’s worth more if kept stock
You had the depth cranked on the angel wing. It actually does a pretty passable ce-2 sound
