  • ►The S65 V8 found in the E9x BMW M3s is known for its individual throttle bodies and 8400rpm rev limit. Unfortunately, the electronic actuators that open the throttle blades tend to fail with some regularity, potentially leaving you stranded. A throttle actuator replacement is a near guarantee when owning a regularly-driven example, so familiarize yourself with the issue.
    The actuators use electronics to turn physical gears connected to the throttle blades. Failures can occur in both the electronics and the physical gears inside the actuator. A handful of engine fault codes will pop up when the failure occurs, so you'll at least have a small heads-up as to what is happening.

    This video perfectly showcases the #1 most important thing to have, when working on a Euro car. This is having the right tools for the job! Having this makes jobs so much easier.

    Did my Throttle Body Actuators on my E92 M3 yesterday with this Video as a guide. Worked like a charm, 2 - 2.5 hour job if you're new to the whole intake assembly etc on a S65.
    Thanks for the upload!

    Thank you for such a well explained and thorough video! I literally just finished replacing both TVAs in about 4 hours. Only issue is that the lock for the hose that connects to the back of the plenum snapped. Any idea how I can fix/replace?

    BMW Grinch Throttle Valve Actuator failures on a E9X M3 S65 V8. Thanks Gareth. Merry Merry.
    ProTip: Get rebuilt TVAs from the UK with better gears and electronics, so you never have to worry about a failed TVA ever again. They also collect your failed TVA cores to rebuild them. Replacing a TVA with an OE or OEM part just means they will fail again in 60k miles. Always replace both TVAs at the same time. Thankfully, the price of a TVA has been cut in half over the years. Also replace the fuel tank breather value nearby ($30-40), which also fails causing a jumpy idle.

      We're working on a rebuild option right now. It's very closely related to the source you mentioned from the UK. Hoping to have them available soon.

      @@GarethFoley that’s awesome. Good to know. Gareth anything worth replacing while doing this job? I’m at 63k. Everything original. Thinking about water pump, thermostat, belts and idle pulleys. Thanks in advance and great video.

      @@m.hfitness There isn't much in the terms of additional replacement opportunities for the throttle actuators. The serpentine belt, pulleys, water pump, etc are pretty much and entirely separate job on their own.

    Two extras: The M3 and M5/M6 TVAs are identical, except there is a small tab at the end that connects to the throttle arms, which is different (and swappable). Both the S65 V8s and S85 V10s have the same TVA failure design flaws.
    When your TVAs fail, the car goes into Limp Mode, but is still drivable. Limp Mode limits speed and power as you drive. When this TVA failure flaw was first diagnosed, everyone thought it was just soft gears that can be swapped with hard plastic or metal gears. It turns out even with gear wear, Limp Mode is more likely triggered by an electronics board failure (MOFETS), so new harder gears won't help. TVAs used to cost $1300-1500 each with 5-10 hrs of labor for the swap.

    • @GarethFoley
      @GarethFoley Год назад

      I almost always assume limp mode conditions are related to the electronic side of the equation. Your typical tech or DIYer is not going to have the ability to diagnose or fix a circuit board which is why swapping the entire unit makes sense. Also, with rebuilt options on the market, like you mentioned, where circuit board repairs and upgrades are performed this is a less costly repair than it was in the past.

    Had no idea the OE/OEM TAs have been updated over the years.
    I got one of the rebuilt ones and got a full bank misfire shortly after install. Though they’re relatively inexpensive.. the rebuilds seems to be a bit of a gamble.
