For future reference, .625" X 3/8" metal clad positive valve seals fit the stock FE heads perfectly and work so much better than those crappy umbrella seals. Also if you find your rockers are over oiling from them being a worn set people will drop a 68-70 Holley main jet down the oil feed hole in the cylinder heads to restrict rocker arm oiling. Apparently cutting the ends off of a SBC pushrod and using the oiling hole in the end also fits right in there but I never tried it.
very cool seeing you pinpoint that oil problem and get it fixed! also glad to see you being careful at your secret racing facility, Almost got t-boned there the first round of detours, lots of people didn't pay attention to the 4 way over there.
Brake boosting it will cut those leave times right down big time! Try it! Nothing like being on boost when leaving the start line instead if waiting ubtill you're already going 20 mph before boost kicks in! Rock on Brother!
27:33 Another odd thing is the intake is part of the head(upper valve cover mounting surface). The same with the Ford Cologne v6. Along with the solid lifters and rocker shaft. I had a couple of Pintos with the 2.8v6. Still have an Offenhauser 4bbl intake sitting around. Those rubber valve cover gaskets looked thin. I had a set of rubber gaskets on a 78 Pinto 2.8 v6 that were much thicker. I don’t think anyone had adjusted the valves for a long time. Had to adjust twice before the clatter stayed at an exceptional level on cold startup. Oil buildup from loose adjustments. Especially compared to how noisy some modern engines are with fuel injection.
Ooh man this truck is so cool. My dad had a '73 F100 with the crankshaft swap to turn it from a 360 to a 390. Headers and a Holley and whoa-doggy did that thing move. I also got to drive our '67 bump side farm truck with a 289 as my high school summer commuter, and even if it was slow, it looked cool as hell. I hope the BS Turbo Farm Truck gets more sweet parts. I'd vote for a Crown Vic front subframe, Trac-Lok diff, and an anti-wrap bar.
Glad you stuck with it and showed that cheese head stubborn nature. I love my Fords but they can be a pain at times. As I live in Wisconsin I really get what you were saying about the deer lol.
i had to do the valve seals on my 99 Durango some years back I watched so guy long time ago use rope to fill the cylinder in through the spark plug hole and took the piston to the top and the rope would hold the valve It work great . i didn't have access to air at the time .
You could always lay down some cheap white bath towels around the engine and bam, if you have something fall or fling off of something then it will more than likely hit the towel and stick to it or fall on the ground right under the engine.
I had something similar on an old carby turbo ford laser and it turned out to be the modulator on the transmission had a torn diaphragm and would suck the trans fluid up into the inlet manifold when the engine was under vacuum. I haven't watched the end of the video but it's something to keep in mind 👌
You can also, instead of restricting the oil flow, machine/grind put your oil return passages to allow the oil to flow better. Engine Masters has a great episode on FE enginea, id recommend it
might try holding brake on launch and try to build a little boost on starting line. Phone GPS usually have a 1 second response time or so GPS wise too. Run a draggy or similar box and you'll get accurate times.
Forgive me if you already did this because im only halfway through the video........BUT there is a common oil restriction modification on the FE. Under the rocker stands on each side there is an oil feed hole. People place a Holley jet in the hole to restrict oil because FE engines tend to over oil the top end. Make sure the thinner bolt goes in that rocker stand as well.
the compression on number 5 is higher because the oil takes up part of the volume of the cylinder and oil isnt compressible so the oil effectively makes the piston "bigger". It's kindof like shaving heads or using a thinner head gasket to increase the compression ratio. Smaller volume cylinder ("larger piston") = higher compression ratio
On my 390 FE ive changed the umbrella valve seals with heads in using the rope trick and a cheap spring tensioner tool that you twist the top and it was a nightmare. I like the reliability of the FE once everything is dialed, I am a ford guy, but I must admit that its hard to defend the FE engine when they all leak (oil and exhaust), aftermarket space is terrible and expensive, there is no reason for the 1000 pound air intake manifold, you might get stuck with a 360 wishing everyday that it was atleast a 390 and there is that dumb little section of rubber hose between the block and water pump you will forget to put on before installing a new pump. Its a good engine with a bunch of little design flaws that make you constantly on the edge of engine swapping. engine swapping and tossing out the 3 speed for a 4.
The best gaskets I have found for FEs are made by Cometic, I had problem with a vacuum leak I couldn't seem to fix talked to my old timer ford buddy told me to get Cometic intake gasket set and it was fixed after I put 2 sets of Felpro gaskets in.
Magnetic impact valve tool for the win... much faster and none of your issues happen, I could do seals in about 3 hours. The 2 piece valve retainer is an old design very strong, remember that engine was developed in the mid 50s.
I felt yer pain with loads of shit going wrong all the time.. one thing after another. But that was a good find on the intake. Awesome to see her run good now.! Well done buddy. 👌🏻👌🏻
I'm a Ford guy and I'll tell you FEs suck. You should swap in a 460. Just like every single Chevy truck has sucked since 2013. They're a joke compared to the Eco boost. Don't tell me I'm wrong, Ive been working for a Chevy dealer as a mechanic since i got out of the Marines in 17. I drive an Eco boost with 170k and the thing has needed a couple new batteries and an alternator. My brother's new Chevy has been through 3 transmissions in 47,000 miles. It's the biggest piece of shit truck I've ever worked on in my life they're garbage.
Im so excited to ride in this thing😂😂
The improvement is insane!
Nope you don't get to now you have to be a cheese head to ride 😅

Thanks for the info! I'll keep that in mind.
Absolutely! I've done the Holley Jet trick to many a FE builds. Works perfectly.
A third vote for the Holley jet trick! Use it on my FE. Cheap insurance for keeping oil in the bottom end
I didn't see this before I posted my own comment. The Holley jet trick works great. I've done it too.
You and Kevin on junkyard digs did an amazing revival on the poop truck
@@RandyLageman thanks lol
Very impressive! Especially for an old farmtruck and ancient analogue "technology"

Boost referenced power valve! That's the main attribute of a blow through carb.

Love old trucks with turbos. My 75 f250 breaks necks as I drive by people. 414w with a 70mm.
Sweet! Thats awesome

On the edge of my seat for this repu video

I’m glad you enjoyed the video, and thanks for the ideas!
I love this truck man. You do some very nice work!!
Great video! Can't wait to see what's next!
Heck yeah, I'm one of the Sub's from from JYD. Love your channel ❤️
I thought you were gonna burn it to the ground before you got the oil issue fixed. Fun video.
Glad you stuck with it and showed that cheese head stubborn nature. I love my Fords but they can be a pain at times. As I live in Wisconsin I really get what you were saying about the deer lol.
Congrats on the success on this one. Made my heart smile to see your joy when you broke 8 seconds.
Thanks, I was pretty happy with that run!

Cant wait till you get this thing turned up and dialed in man good work awesome job
I want to do this to mine now!!!😊
I highly recommend it!
I have a 66 F100 with a FE 390, might have to start collecting parts to do this as well!!
glad to see it again!!! thanks for the video
I'm glad you liked it!
Love it, you know as soon as you get it running good you gotta celebrate by turning up the boost!
I know, right!
You can also, instead of restricting the oil flow, machine/grind put your oil return passages to allow the oil to flow better. Engine Masters has a great episode on FE enginea, id recommend it
I love that truck... Keep the videos coming!!!
Thanks! Will do!
Great work! I agree, the Gibson sounds the best!

This was such a great video!! Great job digging into this is finding the issue. That truck seems SUPER rad!
Thanks a lot man!
Man this is so fricken awesome and your video was fantastic; great work!
Thanks for checking it out!

Some heavier valve springs will help also, so turbo pressure doesn't blow open valves ..
I want to turbo my 292 in my 59 4x4 so bad since watching this series
Thats a pretty massive leak. I’ve grown accustomed to just glazing the VC gaskets
You’re telling me!
Great detective work! There are many that would've said "good enough". Good video - keep it rollin'!
Loved my Gibson cat back set up on my 14 silverado
I have a dart that's, that color green as the one in the intro 🔥
awesome video!
I just built a 390 in a 71. Those valve covers…. I had to wiggle the gasket and keep tightening. So far so good.

It seems the lag time before the turbo spools up is significant off the line. What could be done to compensate for that?
Bullet sounds the best

Woah. Id be curious to know the last 4 of the vin. Looks exactly like my dad's old truck that I sold back in 06 or 07
Here from jyd. This channel is going to explode
Thanks! Glad you’re enjoying it!
13mm? You mean half inch😅. Yea that bolt is factory
Right there's not a single metric bolt on that truck from the factory
Where in Wisconsin are at. I live in Elkhorn. Would be cool to see the truck. My uncle in California had one like yours but red with the same FE.
I watched the whole video 👌👌👌
I felt yer pain with loads of shit going wrong all the time.. one thing after another. But that was a good find on the intake. Awesome to see her run good now.! Well done buddy. 👌🏻👌🏻
For speed reference, that’s what the NNBS (11-13) Silverado 5.3 trucks run for 0-60, mine ran consistent 7.6s with a full exhaust and tuning.
PAIN IN THE “liberty mutual” lol
🤣
A stall converter would help
When Kevin and them went into the motor I forgot the valley Pan
You can braz it if you know how to braz it will work ok
I bet a looser converter will drop another second off the zero to 60
Datsun question. Any sites you used for parts for the wagon mainly right now suspension parts/bushings etc. thanks for any help
Zcardepot and rock auto
didn't proform modify the carb for blow through ? IE boost referenced power valve
Hot damn that’s a lot of uncut zip ties
The first one
Is your turbo seals leaking ?.
...
I see the problem. Chevy plugs in a ford. LOL 😂
I think the problem is the carburetor ? It's pinky violet so it's a Woke carb , and like DJT says ,
When you go Woke you go broke!
You make me know why I don't like Chevy's always Crying about something!!!
Fix the belt! Lol
Pop some 99's in it and lets see whats what
Hard core Ford friend always tell me that FE engines beat Ferrari. So there you go. Haha.
The the videos brother
The reason Ford makes things so crazy is to deter chevy boys from working on Fords.LOL
Man you are a glutton for punishment! I lost my mine just watching. Lol. Yeah it wouldve been sitting out front with the shoe polish on it.
See? Ford's aren't crap. They just can be finicky like a woman. Nice job as usual!
Thanks for watching! It was a long road to get here!
Should have bought the $200 eBay aluminum intake, would have saved putting the anchor back on it!! Great work though man!
Thanks for the tip! I’ll order one!
@BuildSeason I have one sitting next to my 63.5 Galaxie with a 390, just ran out of time to put it on before it leaves for Germany on Tuesday!!
where in wi are u?
Appleton area!
@BuildSeason nice. I'm from green bay
