    Tatsunoko international rights are such a legal quagmire that it is baffling that an international version was even released AT ALL although that's not exclusive to Tatsunoko sadly. Japanese manga and anime studios are notoriously difficult to work with when it comes to licensing their creations and thus I am not surprised that the license granted to Capcom had several strings attached and that Tatsunoko would pull the plug eventually. Noticed how the Capcom representative mentioned that when Tatsunoko refused to let a certain character get into the roster, they simply offered no explanation whatsoever? It is just how this business is handled over there...
    Similar story with Marvel versus Capcom Infinite where Disney made their darnest to NOT let Capcom use certain characters while promoting the MCU on the side resulting on a fantastic fighting game with innovative tag mechanics that no one wants to play!
    I don't even know why Capcom bother with these different franchises crossovers anymore... I'd pay an arm and a leg for a modern "Capcom All Stars" of sorts with the tag mechanics of MVCI!!!

    I still think the way they translated the Tatsunoko characters into this game is, frankly beautiful. Their character models and designs and animations are still some of my favorites in fighting games even being substantially less knowledgable about them as characters (I knew about Casshern in theory since I saw the reboot, and I was aware of what the Gachamen were on a surface level since I enjoyed things like the power rangers and Voltron and their fingerprints are all over those franchises and more). I'm in love with Ken the Eagle's design in this game, and the Yattermen look so much fun as characters. They really did sell the Tatsunoko side to me personally anyways. Sad I'm in a minority there it seems!
    It's a shame legal red tape will pretty much forever keep this franchise from being anything beyond what it is because I have such fondness for it even from a limited Western perspective.

    One strange legacy of this game is that supposedly it taught Tatsunoko how to balance characters for their internal crossovers. Tekkaman Blade can destroy space battleships, Polymar can transform into a supersonic jet, while Ken the Eagle is... a ninja. Capcom's implementation allowed all these characters to maintain their cool factor while balancing their abilities to match each others' circumstances.

  • @mightyfilm
    @mightyfilm 4 года назад +22

    Yeah, I'm sure even most anime fans need explanation for the characters in this game. Most of them didn't even get released in the West, and they're all from the 1970's, an era so called anime fans refuse to revisit anyway. And the two most well known in the west Tatsunoko properties, Samurai Pizza Cats and Speed Racer, were vetoed by Tatsunoko themselves. I only found out about Time Bokan/Yatterman through the one DVD they released that was an anniversary project where they jokes were lost on everyone anyway. This game was clearly intended for a Japanese audience, but if it wasn't released in the west, Western gamers would have complained about not getting it. Even when I watched it played at a convention, everyone just stuck to Capcom's characters.

    • @malcolmboddie237
      @malcolmboddie237 4 года назад +3

      Honestly any fan that doesn’t revisit those golden oldies are really missing out I’d say then again majority of the fans would be turned off from the way they look since the majority is hooked on the new look of anime.

    • @mightyfilm
      @mightyfilm 4 года назад +5

      I think the biggest problem with ignoring older anime is that you don't get the feel of the origins of themes and tropes in anime that are used to this day. Of course I also blame the licensers and licensees for not trying to find a license for anything prior to the 90's, unless it's a big franchise name. Then if you really want to seek it out, you have to watch them raw. The only place that even offered the 2008 Yatterman legally was that crowd funding anime site that went under.

    • @cirvac1981
      @cirvac1981 4 года назад +4

      Unfortunately, people tend to forget where the tropes come from... Tatsunoko was one of the biggest anime producers in Japan where they divided their animes into kids/family friendly and shonens. Being french, I remember seeing Gatchaman when I was a kid, then in Portugal Tekkaman Blade as a teen and later on the other Tatsunoko prods on satellite (Eastern European channels - which even nowadays I find Calendarman hilarious... specially the giant robot finish and the villains antics in order to not get "zapped") as a late teen. Sure, seeing it today, they may look silly BUT these animes are the foundation to what anime fans are seeing today.
      Not seeing at least one Tatsunoko anime is like not listening to at least one Beatles song.

    Not stated in this video, Tekkaman Blade was released in English in America on the now defunct TV station UPN in the mid to late 90's under the name Teknoman. The human operator of the Teknoman suit was named Slade, though obviously a localization mistranslation of "Blade".
    EDIT: Also, even those who don't know what Tatsunoko is have most likely heard of one of their anime franchises without realizing Tatsunoko made it: Speed Racer, who was likely one of the characters Tatsunoko refused permission to include, the likely reason being Warner Bros. held the license for the Speed Racer series (making a 2008 live action movie) that blocked his appearance in this game.

      I think they would be better if they were balanced the same as the normal sized characters and and counted for a single team member in a 2v2 or 3v3 scenario.
      If this large characters were popularized we could see guest characters in capcom games like optimus prime.

    The downfall of this game is that they made it specifically for Wii. Granted, I own it and had it since release, but I would've rather had it for PS3 or XBox 360.

    I remember seeing a commercial for this game and not knowing what exactly Tatsunoko was, but I did recognize the bird heroes because of the Robot Chicken skit of it that is burned into my memory.
    Which now knowing that Tatsunoko was a major part of the foundation of anime history makes me a bit sad.

    I'm not an anime fan, so most of the characters I either had no knowledge of, or had seen images of them before but knew nothing about them.
    That said, I had heard about this game well before it ever got released in the US. And with the gameplay being the closest thing to a new Marvel/Capcom game that had been made in several years, I was very interested in playing it. As stated in the video, there was originally no intention to release it outside of Japan, and I had heard about that as well. Being that I really, REALLY wanted to play it, I imported the initial version released for the Wii in Japan. I installed the Homebrew Channel on my Wii specifically to play this. Up to that point I didn't have much of a reason to do so, and I was always hesitant with that sort of thing in general as I didn't want to mess up my system. But I had to take the gamble since I wanted to play this game.
    I was surprised when I got it to find that pretty much ALL text in the game, including the menus, was all in Japanese. I realize that this is a game released in Japan, but as I had previously bought and played the Sega Saturn imports of X-Men vs Street Fighter and Marvel SH vs. Street Fighter (in that case just needing a 3rd party cart that handled both the RAM expansion and got around the region locking without having to mod the system in any way), much of the text in those games was in English aside from things like the character endings. So navigating the menu was easier. I had to look up a translation of the menu options to cross reference to navigate it.
    But it was worth it, and I enjoyed the hell out of the game. Of course later on it was announced that a version would be released in the US. I didn't regret buying the import since I had it for at least a year or more before the US release even came out, though I likely wouldn't have bothered importing it if a US release had seemed likely at the time. Still, I also got the US version, and I don't consider having the earlier version from Japan to be a loss or a waste since not only did I enjoy it for quite a while, but as there were slight differences on both ends in the roster, both had characters that weren't available on the other version.
    I still have both versions in my collection and have no intention of parting with them.

    I remember spending the full amount of cash from my miserable salary just to buy this game. Why? Because it's one of the best fighters for the Wii and Tatsunoko rocks! That's why.
    It's easy and fun to play and the addition of giant characters was actually one of the fun things of this game.

    Fun fact, the Capcom side had a total of 5 planned but scrapped characters. They were Ibuki and M.Bison from Street Fighter, Nero from Devil May Cry and surprisingly Phoenix Wright and Franziska Von Karma from the Ace Attorney series. I'm not sure why Ibuki, Nero and Bison were scrapped but Von Karma was most likely scrapped because Wright was scrapped. Wright was scrapped because the team had trouble designing a move set for him, but was we all know he was later added to Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3.

    I had watched Gatchaman and Tekkaman Blade as a kid. I was familiar with some of the characters. When I saw this at an arcade it blew my mind. When the Wii version came out I played it a lot, it took the place of Capcom vs SNK in my house.
    I was so curious about the other Tatsunoko characters that I rented out from Netflix what Tatsunoko DVDs they had. I really liked Karas a character.
    I replayed this a little bit on Sunday, as it was the 10 year anniversary, and looks and plays wonderfully. The Wii had some really amazing games!

    Great video! Battle of the Planets was the first anime series I saw as a child, lots of great memories around the show. It was great to learn years later it was originally called Gatchaman, so I bought the series on blu ray, and found it to be even more enjoyable since it was not watered down as BotP was (especially making Jinpei so different).

    The International version actually has different soundtracks for the Tatsunoko characters than the original Japanese version. As someone who grew up with Tatsunoko anime, I much prefer the Japanese version. When my favorite hero is on, that hero's theme song comes up as background music. Much cooler! Also, I don't think Condor Joe from Gatchman is in the original Japanese version, but I could be wrong.

    The one thing I absolutely loved about the original release on the Arcade/Wii was how the each character theme music was the background and the music can change back and forth depending on who was swapped out at that moment. I was so bummed when they went with just generic techno music for TvC: Ultimate All-Stars.

    Gatchaman is arguably the series that opened the latin american market to shonen and we know how that ended up roughly 10 years later with Saint Seiya becoming a cult and Dragon Ball a religion.
