I only played the SNES Killer Instinct at a school friend's house going back to my elementry school years. To my memory, it was the first Fighting Game I ever played going back as far as I could remember. Before that, I remember seeing an Arcade version of Street Fighter 2 at a Ice Creamery near the beach while I was on holidays with my family but my mum never allowed me to play Arcade games back in the day, so all I could do is watch the starting screen and the demo game-play screens over and over to know what it was about. So the SNES version of Killer Instinct that I played at a friend's place was my first real experience of a fighting game. Years later when I was old enough to save up for my own gaming system, the N64, I brought Killer Instinct 2 Gold and I loved it just as much as those brief memories I had of playing the SNES Killer Instinct. Hope to see your video on Killer Instinct 2 as I was sure that was quite a different game compared to the original Killer Instinct.
This was the game that helped me understand how to do combos in gameplay and how to make them work. Until KI I was just a lil bit slow in inputs and could never combo right. Then Killer Instinct shows up with a beautiful tutorial on combos and the combo system right there for the reading, right on the machine! It was normal for a fighting game to have a sticker with the characters specials, possibly their super moves, right on the coin op machine, but a full on tutorial of the combos?! Never seen that till KI and then after that I saw at least nominal combo info on future games from Capcom and Midway. This game made me a better fighter!
i can absolutely relate to KI and the autodouble system "unlocking" fighting game mechanics for my young brain. i made a similarly storied comment on this video a couple mins ago.

I love the Killer Instinct franchise, somewhat of an expert in the SNES port, spent hours learning combos with each and every character and this was back then when the internet was in its baby stages and not everyone had it, non stop grinding, only ones I never mastered was chief thunder and riptor, when I finally discovered a local “barcade” had this cabinet I didn’t leave it all night lol since I was used to the snes port I was just in awe cause I had never played the arcade version
I had it for gameboy, i remember the final boss cheesing like crazy that i actually kneed my game boy through the screen. I remember instantly regretting doing that. I also had it for N64 and having awesome battles with my cousin. Great fucking game. Brings back alot of memories.
Playing the arcade in that time was memorable! This is for me the game that miss the most because i met a lot of good players and everyone knew all the combos! Good times!
killer instinct gold for n64 was my motherfuckin JAM. absolutely was the game that started my love of fighting games. i was always fascinated with them, but nothing ever clicked like KI and it's autodouble system. it got so bad, that i would literally play the game with my back to the screen, exclusively picking up audio tells to decide whether or not i was on the right side and successfully pulling off my desired moves. my friends fuckin hated me. we always played with the same options enabled (and without a memory card, always needed to enter the cheats on the credits scene after every launch: Z-A-R-Z-A-B, Z-B-A-Z-A-L, and Z-B-A-L-A-Z.) we used easy breakers, full super power, full breakers, powered finishers, and quick openers. this combination of options made for HILARIOUS gameplay and id 100% suggest it to anyone reading this comment in 2020. i played TJ COMBO, and id still wipe the fucking floor with yas if i played any of you today. bring it on, get bodied. and as orchid's stage repeated ad nauseum: PLAY HARD, WITH THE FEELING
Lol I'd take you up on that! ...if wasn't still playing on ps4. Combo was my boy too! I also played Orchid and Cinder. Cartwheels, cat transformations, and the invisible ultra combo till I die!
I have to say, the arcade version of the original Killer Instinct looks a lot better than the original Virtua Fighter. Would have been interesting to have seen this on the Sega 32X or on PCs of the time. Even if this game was never going to be on a Sega platform of all places! And I think the Saturn was Sega's current platform at the time.
Snes Killer Instinct is still so much better than the hacked N64 KI Gold. The N64 controller was a Nightmare for anything but FPS and Racers and Mario 64.
Absolutely love Killer Instinct and appreciate all the hard work rare has done over the years. It's a shame about the falling out with them but I still wish him the best.
No one ever seems to care that the "Ultra 64" was far superior to the N64 hardware. Ultra 64 was what we were supposed to get at home and that certainly never happened. Instead we got substandard ports. I'd argue that the U64 Arcade set was developed entirely to sell N64. A ruse.
@@TopHatGamingManChannel That's why I love Rare Replay, even has their Spectrum games on it. So you can see just how adept they were even on such a modest machine.
I love this game! It was certainly one of my favourites from back in the day that I still pop in and play with. I remember being blown away by how it looked and sounded and the black cartridge was a welcome stand out from my other games too. I was hoping you'd talk about this one soon, Thank you! :)
Though Street Fighter 2 will always have my heart, this was probably the fighting game I was strongest at on the SNES. Wasn't a fan of the arcade version ironically. I was good with EVERYONE including Eyedol (he was unlockable... spoiler.) The story was great, gameplay fantastic and the soundtrack was off the hook. Speaking of, why didn't you cover the fact the SNES came with the Killer Cuts limited edition CD of the soundtrack? That was the most BOSS part of the Killer Instinct port.
This 👆. Nintndo bait & switch bullshit. Nintendo was such a letdown, with their watered-down home console hardware. I wanted this game & the Cruis'n series on a powerful home console, like they were promising! What they gave us was vastly inferior to Sony's already-released, PS1. It's no wonder Sony is so dominant in the console market, now. Nintendo wasn't delivering on their promises.
This game was very popular in the USA as well. If me and my friedns were going to play a fighting game either at home or the Arcade, it was going to be between Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinct. It's fighting mechanics really helped set it apart.
@@TopHatGamingManChannel: I was in Florida around that time myself to celebrate my grandparents 50th anniversary. They took thr whole family on a cruise and to Disney World.
I absolutely loved KI-1 on Super NES!! Even more so that KI-2 on N64. Wish I still had my Super NES and all the games I used to have. 😞 KI was definitely my favorite.
I loved killer instinct so much as a kid, and I even grew up to be a pro player for the most recent Xbox one version. On top of that, Mick Gordon, the composer for season 1 and 2 gave me a shot to be a vocalist on the soundtrack after I submitted some of my old band days tracks. I landed the part for the Herald Of Gargos track and I'm still in shock to this day that I am a part of this games legacy. Super honored as I still love everything about the series.
Had the game for my SNES, learned every character down to their Ultra combo. Best character was Saberwulf. Still have the soundtrack CD that came with the game.
I remember how much me and my friends were into KI when it first smashed the arcade scene in the mid 90s. For a while it overtook MKII as the defacto western 1on1 fighter. Was also one of the games that made me crave an upcoming N64 at the time.
Dude, I just discovered your RUclips content and I love it (as well as I love Killer Instinct :)). You're doing a great job. Good luck and best regards.
This game was HUGE in Argentina...back in the day we had lots of fantastic KI players who memorized every freaking combo and finisher (me included). The graphics and gameplay were out of this world!
I have fond memories of playing this game in the arcades, however I can't say it's a great game. It's riddled with bugs, the gameplay is gimmicky and somewhat unbalanced. I loved playing it on the arcades though, if you were a 90's kid you might remember entering the arcade af the tune of "AWESOME COMBO", it was a very noisy machine lmao. The graphics were great and have their charm, but to me, the technical issues opaqued the experience. If you wanted to get real, you'd pop your quarters on the SFII machine.
Still beat Killer Instinct 2. That game was was jank af, especially the new throwing engine. I could never get into KI2, despite being a devout arcade KI1 player & competitor.
@@TexasHollowEarth hell no KF2 is wayyy better then the first one... who is really going back too the SNES too play the first one over the second one??
I remember spending hours trying to defeat idol. His hits took so much of your power bar. One of the greatest feelings is performing a combo breaker when he starts beating up on you.
It's really good. M$ shouldn't have abandoned it. Whoever's making their big software decisions should be hung to death. They're too woke for their own good.
Playing with a group of friends decades ago when I was a kid in the 90's. Playing against each other I was using Cinder, I button bashed a string of random movements and ended with a attack, Cinder raised his fist in the air and a bolt of lighting struck my friends character killing him instantly. We all freaked out, I was never able to pull that move off again, despite looking in the manual to try it. Always wondered which specific move it was, I should look for it as I imagine it'll be on youtube somewhere. Fond gaming memory of mine :)
I grew up in suburbs of Chicago. I remember when the TEST machines hit the arcade. You could barley get close to the machine there was some many people around it. But I wanted to mention some of the early changes to the code. Cinder was originally called "Meltdown". I spoke to one of the Midway employees when they were updating the machine. They had said the change was made due to a similar name in a Capcom game. Also some of the other changes were Chief Thunder being able to endlessly juggle with his head spike move. That same update that changed Cinders name also added things like amiable fire balls with Thunder as well as others. Also the link move for long combos was added at this time. These were the glory days of the local arcade. I do miss them.
Absolutely loved this video, hoping to see your take on the sequel and the N64 version as well. I would also be interested in hearing your thoughts on the Xbox one and PC follow up and how you think it measures up to the previous entries in the series.
I played KI in mid 90s in Belgium Arcades as a teen... those were the days! Street Fighter 2 and 3, Mortal Kombat 1-3, Killer Instinct.. all playable in the arcades! Awesome!
Removal of the zooming in & out didn't surprise me one bit; this was also the case for the kinda butchered port of Samurai Shodown (stuck in the smaller "zoomed out" look). Orchid was my favorite, but it wasn't until I got to learning her on the Snes version that I learned how vicious she can be. My friends hated when I played as Orchid...yesss. Hope you do videos on both the Gameboy port of KI and the story of KI2.

Good times!
killer instinct gold for n64 was my motherfuckin JAM. absolutely was the game that started my love of fighting games.
i was always fascinated with them, but nothing ever clicked like KI and it's autodouble system. it got so bad, that i would literally play the game with my back to the screen, exclusively picking up audio tells to decide whether or not i was on the right side and successfully pulling off my desired moves. my friends fuckin hated me.
we always played with the same options enabled (and without a memory card, always needed to enter the cheats on the credits scene after every launch: Z-A-R-Z-A-B, Z-B-A-Z-A-L, and Z-B-A-L-A-Z.)
we used easy breakers, full super power, full breakers, powered finishers, and quick openers. this combination of options made for HILARIOUS gameplay and id 100% suggest it to anyone reading this comment in 2020.
i played TJ COMBO, and id still wipe the fucking floor with yas if i played any of you today. bring it on, get bodied.
and as orchid's stage repeated ad nauseum: PLAY HARD, WITH THE FEELING
Indeed sir either i compete n64 killer instinct gold i used the Ultra Combo even the snes version will be Superior
I make the best of it by using the d pad on the n64 controller. The analogue stick just isn't suited to these kinds of games.
I agree 100%! Unfortunately for Me My friend Chuck made it look easy playing Gold! I still can't play like that with the N64 controller! :(
There's a new version out in the arcade. Saw it at an expo, looked pretty good.
What expo? I want to see this
It was at the Houston Pinball Expo.
Absolutely love Killer Instinct and appreciate all the hard work rare has done over the years. It's a shame about the falling out with them but I still wish him the best.
I still remember Cinder finishing moves and ultra combo.
No one ever seems to care that the "Ultra 64" was far superior to the N64 hardware. Ultra 64 was what we were supposed to get at home and that certainly never happened. Instead we got substandard ports. I'd argue that the U64 Arcade set was developed entirely to sell N64. A ruse.
I wonder why we didn't get ultra 64 hardware.
One my OG homies used to always play this... he was so happy when it was rereleased on Xbox One a couple years back
Once again Rare proved themselves more adept at squeezing every last of power out of the SNES than Nintendo themselves.
A bit like Argonaut too - The Brits were better at getting the best out of the Super Nintendo. It must have been all that practise on those micros!
@@TopHatGamingManChannel That's why I love Rare Replay, even has their Spectrum games on it. So you can see just how adept they were even on such a modest machine.
SNES KI is still GOAT
@REDBIRD not really
@REDBIRD KI gold actually was way better...
I have to agree I liked the SNES KI better than KI gold. The controller was just better for fighting games.
@@ebenezerspludge8369 that frame rate tho...
@@ricky-sanchez Really? I played it just the other day and thought it looked great. I still have my original SNES and N64 games.
I still love the hell out of this series . The snes version was a decent port and I played the hell out of it back in the day.
I loved killer instinct ULTRA combo ,i spent loads on that lol
I love this game! It was certainly one of my favourites from back in the day that I still pop in and play with. I remember being blown away by how it looked and sounded and the black cartridge was a welcome stand out from my other games too. I was hoping you'd talk about this one soon, Thank you! :)
The arcade version is almost the only game I play on my XB1 lol
Though Street Fighter 2 will always have my heart, this was probably the fighting game I was strongest at on the SNES. Wasn't a fan of the arcade version ironically. I was good with EVERYONE including Eyedol (he was unlockable... spoiler.) The story was great, gameplay fantastic and the soundtrack was off the hook.
Speaking of, why didn't you cover the fact the SNES came with the Killer Cuts limited edition CD of the soundtrack? That was the most BOSS part of the Killer Instinct port.
That might have been a US exclusive thing.
@@SomeOrangeCat it was released in the UK too
Personally, I still feel shafted all of us 'Ultra 64' players were waiting for Killer Instinct 1 and still got 2.
Nice, I actually played Killer Instinct 2 in Florida as a kid in 1996!
@@TopHatGamingManChannel: I was in Florida around that time myself to celebrate my grandparents 50th anniversary. They took thr whole family on a cruise and to Disney World.
I remember mowing a bunch of grass to affor this game for the snes ... it didn’t let me down either , was a great port . Great vid too thgm!
U better make a video about the 64 one🇹🇹
I still remember standing around arcades with a pad of paper and writing down every move I came across. Great video! Do the sequel!
Had the game for my SNES, learned every character down to their Ultra combo. Best character was Saberwulf. Still have the soundtrack CD that came with the game.
If the N64 had cd storage they probably could have done a perfect port and added the cool fmv cg
I remember how much me and my friends were into KI when it first smashed the arcade scene in the mid 90s. For a while it overtook MKII as the defacto western 1on1 fighter. Was also one of the games that made me crave an upcoming N64 at the time.
Even today the game has aged well. The soundtrack was awesome.
Been sleeping on this game, will revisit it soon! Thanks, man!
Ironic that a game made to market the N64 proved that the SNES still had some life left in it.
Jahain Inagaki MAME
Rusty Shackleford oh yeah, KI2 was rubbish.
@@jahaininagaki385 - I never said SNES. We're talkin' arcade, here. Both Nintendo ports were vastly inferior to their arcade counterparts.
I loved this game, but probably haven't thought of it in 20 years. Great video, and thanks for the nostalgia rush.
I remember spending hours trying to defeat idol. His hits took so much of your power bar. One of the greatest feelings is performing a combo breaker when he starts beating up on you.
I loved this game as a kid and still hear the music when my boss calls me .. I wish this was on yhe Switch at least
I love that game. They need to bring it back.
Nice to learn more about Rare's early beginnings in your intro. I previously only knew them for DK and KI.
I think you meant to say "C-C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER!"
I've still yet to play the new KI game despite owing an xbox one. Maybe I'll finally seek it out and give it a go.
It's really good. M$ shouldn't have abandoned it. Whoever's making their big software decisions should be hung to death. They're too woke for their own good.
Refreshing change indeed! Loved it!
I was just playing this last night, it's still one of my favorite fighting games of all time👊
Playing with a group of friends decades ago when I was a kid in the 90's.
Cinder orchid spinal most op in the game 🤣 that being said fulgore orchid my fav
*"C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER!!"*
Orchid all day long knocking out 59 hit combos I was a little obsessed with this game it’s a pity the N64 version wasn’t as much fun
3 Thumbs up...
I used to play all of these games, my sons were banned from playing them.....
NO PRACTICING...
yeah then there Uncle came down when I was at work and yeah they done some ultra super combo's on me.....
Yeah I was vex my little young sons.....
Well funny.
Good review...
Those were the days of smoking on the buses......
I loved Killer Instinct, the story, the characters, the music, the graphics everything! It is such a great game! The black cartridge, and it came with the soundtrack CD! I mean their character stories, designs and moves are so good too great video man!
I think I remember playing one of the arcade killer instinct games at my local cinema of all places and thinking how amazing the graphics were. I had it on the snes aswell but also had mortal kombat 3 ultimate I loved both games tbh
Great picks! Besides UMK 3 My other personal favorite was MK 2! :D
loved killer Instinct
