As a former machine gunner I would love to get this on a sustained fire kit. Damn you would have some punch and reach. Never thought of 338 in a mg before but when you look at what that round can do and the light weight of the platform it is a brilliant idea. 7.62 was deadly in urban areas, damn 338 would pound through walls like nothing was there. Just thinking about last time I provided covering fire with a mag58, two of these on tripods would be freaking devastating. 50 cal is great but the 126 lbs making it totally useless in the mountains or rough terrain in a dismounted role. Mg338 checks a lot boxes.
I was at Sig HQ last weekend and got to put hands on the M338 and it really is a badass weapon. The 240B will always have a place in my heart, but this thing has so many quality of life changes I didn't know I would have wanted back in the day as a machine gunner!

While the M7 (M5) doesn't appear to improve a lot over the M4 with the exception of single round stopping power (which to be fair, was the aim for SIG and the military), the M250 and M338 are massive improvements over the existing service machine guns, especially the M338 being that intermediate between the now M250 and the M2. Seeing it rip through that ballistics dummy was both impressive and low key horrifying
@@deadarashi6462 Colt released the M5 back in 2017, which was before the XM5 was adopted. Prior to that, the XM5 was simply Sig’s entry in the NGSW program (Didn’t have a numerical designation).

Great guy, soft spoken, big positive influence in my life. He loved to fish and taught me how. We spent hours and hours fishing and chatting. He was instrumental in my decision to serve. There are a couple old news film clips and a picture out there from Guadalcanal where my Uncle Hank is clearly visible. i mean yeah .50 cal is a literal anti-material round so i would like to see how it could do that. i’m sure that the military would love to put it between 7.62 and .50 like they touched on at the beginning of the video, but definitely not replacing it at all
I don't think the .50 will be replaced any time soon in the anti-material role, even if they do replace it Im sure they gonna hand that down to another division that needs it for its specific use, like how some special forces groups still use the m1911 or a 357 magnum
I dont think itll have any issues. most likely going to perform closer to a lapua. which will chew through them as well. and im sure the military will be running some hardcore ammo through those.
After watching this channel for like 5 years im glad that it’s growing and improving with each passing year. Hope you guys are around to teach my son about cool shit when he’s older 🤣

@@John-wk2fd True, but they all lacked real world ballistics. It wasn't until .338 Lapua and .338 Norma that the ballistics became with the buffer from .308 and the 50 within the military. The military is binding itself within the logistics of all the new rounds that no one else is using on top of making weapon load heavier across the board. Yes the M338 is lighter, but ehe XM5 weighs 8.38 pounds, or 9.84 pounds with the suppressor, compared to the 6.34-pound M4. That new rifle will also use 20-round magazines, smaller than the 30-round magazines troops currently use. A soldier's basic combat load will be seven of those 20-round magazines, a total of 140 rounds, weighing 9.8 pounds altogether. The M4's combat load, also seven magazines for a total of 210 rounds, is 7.4 pounds. In total, a rifleman with the XM5 will carry roughly four pounds more than today's M4 rifleman. We'll just have to wait and see.
@Shep Leonard the .338 Lapua Mag was invented in 1989. While a bit different than the Norma, the Lapua is still arguably "also" in the middle between 7.62 and .50 BMG. I should have specified more in my initial post regarding the .338 caliber in general, and it's subsequent variants, not just the Norma. You do raise a good point though about practical loadouts, where weight of the .338 will trump capacity. And of course, cost will certainly be a factor as well, although with government contracts that difference would probably get lost in the muck.
240 was already in service as a coax and quite functional without having to reinvent the wheel at 5$ a round ffs. So much for extensive time at the range at that price.

He's not.
That's a BRUTAL roast.

1:14 The casual nod from John when Charlie said “Korean Meat Bathing Suit” was the perfect move.
Big E-4 energy from the resident machine gunner
that’s why we love John
John's the Don
Which nation? Mag58 means Canadian, Belgian, Aus or Kiwi me guess.

I was at Sig HQ last weekend and got to put hands on the M338 and it really is a badass weapon. The 240B will always have a place in my heart, but this thing has so many quality of life changes I didn't know I would have wanted back in the day as a machine gunner!
It's US designed and developed with former US special forces providing insight and feedback.

Impressive how controllable it is from standing position in full auto for being a 338 Norma mag
It's heavy long barrel make negligible recoil. It's still not a 50 cal.
John walking and firing was the sickest thing I've seen in a minute.
Isn't the M5 dropped now?
@@collinb.8542 It got renamed the M7 but I believe its still going ahead.
@@deathtdow Correct, I believe it was renamed because Colt released their own rifled called the M5

Would genuinely love to see how that technique has evolved through the years.
My Uncle Hank (Sgt. Henry Abbott USMC, 1st Marines, Silver Star, Purple Heart) had a curly stache like that. He was a Marine who fought on Guadalcanal and across the pacific. He looked the same but much younger and clearly starving from the lack of food and really really tired. He has been gone about ten years now....still miss him. Keep rockin that curly stache!

If it replaces the .50, we should see how it does against engine blocks.
i mean yeah .50 cal is a literal anti-material round so i would like to see how it could do that. i’m sure that the military would love to put it between 7.62 and .50 like they touched on at the beginning of the video, but definitely not replacing it at all
I don't think the .50 will be replaced any time soon in the anti-material role, even if they do replace it Im sure they gonna hand that down to another division that needs it for its specific use, like how some special forces groups still use the m1911 or a 357 magnum
Considering 7.62 will punch into engine block already, I am gonna go with "It'll do"
I dont think itll have any issues. most likely going to perform closer to a lapua. which will chew through them as well. and im sure the military will be running some hardcore ammo through those.

I remember a dude demonstrating his ability to close distance on a position while down range with 2 M240s. It was the funniest thing I’ve ever seen in my life. Guy was 6’ 3” 240 lbs, built as hell. Him shooting those while moving is an image that will never leave my mind. He managed it, but oh lord was it funny.
Did Charlie get a new tactical rake for the Idaho range? We need a video about the new rake’s capabilities.
It's all in the tines. People think in the joinery, it's clearly tines affording him that kind of control.
4:15 Background scene had me rolling.
Dang impressive weapon... And thank you John for giving a great synopsis; straight to the point, well thought out and no fluff... Wish more creators/contributors had that style...
I really enjoy having John in the videos, it seems hes used for his specialty but I personally wouldn't mind him being in other video topics too - killer video as always team.
John chasing Charlie across the screen in the background was the best part of this video. It looked like he was chasing him with some random chunk of lumber laying around the ranch, so so funny!😆

This would make a nice replacement for the COAX on the Abrams and Bradley. It would bring the engagement range of the coax closer to that of the Main Gun.
😅
This is nowhere near the 5-ish kilometer range of the MBT main gun...
@@Asghaad Reading comprehension's not your thing, is it? He said "bring it CLOSER", not "bring it up to" the engagement range..

Been saying for many years that .338 should have been the round that a new platform was based on back when the M240 replaced the M60. Glad to see it's being taken seriously.
Considering the .338 Norma wasn't invented until 2009 and the 60 was replaced in early 80s.
@@shepleonard8695 .338 win mag was out before then. Also there were a host of 8.6mm cartridges in existence already that could have been modified or used already for machine gun use
These intro’s are better than most movies coming out now days dude my word
