That gun looks like it was taken straight out of halo. I absolutely love it. The main reason I love it is because you can give it to a SAW gunner in a fireteam and have not only more firepower but also someone that can provide covering fire, take out vehicles, punch through cover, and even take out enemies at longer ranges. I think it’s more useful than the M240 for infantry because of its weight which is heavier than the M338 which allows SAW gunners to fire while they walk, meaning they can control their surroundings much more effectively so that not only the gunner but the other soldiers in that fireteam. In my opinion, the military should take it! If they use it right, they can have a lot of roles that they don’t have filled replaced by the SAW gunners.

I have a sig P320 the full size model ( cost me 500 dollars a few years back ) the first strike fire pistol I ever owned. People have given me grief over it at a local outdoor range where armalite style rifles are prominent.and for some reason the majority of pistols seen are the high end semiautomatics. Now my 320 has traditional iron sights. I was shooting at 10 and 25 yards. Offhand switching between my left and right hand some guys new to shooting (range master was constantly checking for safety concerns). had tricked out 9mm shooting at bowling pins set a 100 yards. At a break I asked how they were doing. They were not hitting anything. I asked if I could shoot at their bowling pins. Okay they said. So I got my 320 after the break and using 115 grain Winchester from a range pack. I proceed after one test shot to hit the bowling pins with 3 aimed shots but using the pole supporting the awning as a support. The range master chuckle. We had known each other for years. Both of use cut our teeth on the 1911A1 which we both shot expert with in the military. I like Sigs, Colts and for some reason taurus revolvers.

Coming from an old UH-1 pilot, based on range and hit power, the M338 looks to be a much better door gun than the M60. I hope the guys at TF 160 are testing the M338 right now.

Been saying for many years that .338 should have been the round that a new platform was based on back when the M240 replaced the M60. Glad to see it's being taken seriously.

@@shepleonard8695 .338 win mag was out before then. Also there were a host of 8.6mm cartridges in existence already that could have been modified or used already for machine gun use

@@John-wk2fd True, but they all lacked real world ballistics. It wasn't until .338 Lapua and .338 Norma that the ballistics became with the buffer from .308 and the 50 within the military. The military is binding itself within the logistics of all the new rounds that no one else is using on top of making weapon load heavier across the board. Yes the M338 is lighter, but ehe XM5 weighs 8.38 pounds, or 9.84 pounds with the suppressor, compared to the 6.34-pound M4. That new rifle will also use 20-round magazines, smaller than the 30-round magazines troops currently use. A soldier's basic combat load will be seven of those 20-round magazines, a total of 140 rounds, weighing 9.8 pounds altogether. The M4's combat load, also seven magazines for a total of 210 rounds, is 7.4 pounds. In total, a rifleman with the XM5 will carry roughly four pounds more than today's M4 rifleman. We'll just have to wait and see.

@Shep Leonard the .338 Lapua Mag was invented in 1989. While a bit different than the Norma, the Lapua is still arguably "also" in the middle between 7.62 and .50 BMG. I should have specified more in my initial post regarding the .338 caliber in general, and it's subsequent variants, not just the Norma. You do raise a good point though about practical loadouts, where weight of the .338 will trump capacity. And of course, cost will certainly be a factor as well, although with government contracts that difference would probably get lost in the muck.

240 was already in service as a coax and quite functional without having to reinvent the wheel at 5$ a round ffs. So much for extensive time at the range at that price.

@@СтаниславК-в5щ To be honest, I think the M338 And The PKP Pecheneg are pretty close. Because since the M240B Was pretty close anyways, an upgraded version is probably just as good as the PKP.
