- For a first taste of bikepacking, Si's certainly not gone in steady - with an epic 4 day trip from Morocco's capital of Marrakesh to the high Atlas Mountains. And who better to show him the ropes than former Transcontinental Race winner and bikepacking enthusiast Josh Ibbett.

It's 6.30am in a remote, rocky location in the High Atlas Mountains, Simon Richardson is waking up from his first ever Bivvy. That's right, a whole lot of chamois time for the former pro cyclist who has often professed his disliking of 'touring'.
Will the experience change Si's mind? Thankfully experienced bikepacker Josh Ibbett is on hand talk and show Si through how to handle the trip when it gets remote!

What country would you go bike packing in? 🤔
North Korea
Morocco more!
Global Cycling Network a rural country, like somewhere in south america! Maybe Rocky Mountains in canada, or a green quiet charming area :D when thinking about it that’s one gorgeous hell of a trip
Southern China
I'm thinking Japan, probably in or around Hokkaido or the Kansai area. This, right after a bikepacking trip to a natural wonder somewhere close to home.
As a Moroccan I am so proud that you have enjoyed your 400 km in my country , it was amazing and we are honored with your achievement and your positive feedback. Welcome again and again.
Just for your information " Nous nous coffe " means half and half = 50% coffe +50% milk 😉.
GCN , you are the best.
It felt like I just went on a journey with our bros at GCN.
I loved that you introduced your crew and were upfront and honest about their role. Thanks for being forthright.
Greg Loper i thought that was weird, I mean ofc we can see it’s not them filming.. unless u mean that they aren’t holding their gear but I’m sure they have spare water and stuff on the car
Ok.
yes I really respected that!
I've only just found this video, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It took me back to a ride I made in 1990, cycling from Cardiff to the south of Morocco and back. This took in Spain (cycling down from Santander) and Portugal before heading down through Morocco. (I cheated a little and took a train from Tangier to Fez on the way south and another from Esaouira on the coast to Tangier on the way north). It was a magical solo journey of 4,500 miles, on a more conventional touring bike - the biggest adventure of my life. I remember wonderful hospitality and scenery and at times, blistering heat - 46 - 47 degrees centigrade as I was in Morocco during July and August, but my route south through Spain helped me to begin to acclimatize. Thanks for bringing those fabulous memories.
Wow.. thats some adventure 😊
Probably the best film GCN has made. Nice work Josh and Si, I'm looking forward to more in the series!
Jordan Harris i was about to write EXACTLY the same thing. Amazing video, amazing soundtrack, amazing scenery. Loved it.
Cheers Jordan!
Late to the party, but I wanted to watch this when I had time to enjoy it. I expected it to be good and I agree, it's the best GCN video ever! The story, the cinematography, the editing, everything is top notch. It has the feel of the best Top Gear productions, yet done without a BBC budget! The 49 dislikes baffle me. People must have accidentally hit the wrong button.
Still waiting
hey ! what about the team and cameraman ! ?
Wow... What a video. The pure spirit of cycling. I'm gonna cry.
Matheus Barbosa Thanks Matheus
3:21 is the best moment in all GCN videos!
Exactly what I was thinking. I absolutely love watching that moment. And those lads were keeping up, weren't they?
I was born and grew up in Morocco and I haven't been back in years, so this brought up so much wonderful nostalgia. Thank you
GCN just levelled up! This reminds me of classic Top Gear (back when it was actually good!), love the inclusion of big tracking shots and not just short sharp editing- great work guys and gals at GCN 👍🏻
agree, this is literally the best of top gear, camera work is insane....i am just finding these and holy hell i am addicted.....
So just watch the grand tour, genius.
No hate but Top Gear quality is a few steps above this.
this is what makes GCN the number 1 bike channel. The diversity of contents are just phenomenal. thank you gcn
I appreciate your coming to our country and having fun in it you show us things we didn't know about our home
bikepacking was an amazing, life-changing experience for me. 3 days in, and the rest of the world falls away. Nothing else matters, just pure bliss.
Having watched more GCN that I care to admit, this honestly was perhaps the most pleasurable to date. Seeing Si so relaxed and clearly in simple enjoyment of the place, the experience and the newness was a fresh and inspiring moment in GCN history. Personally, having spent plenty of time in the backcountry in my home hills of Colorado, and traveled bunches in Africa, it made me long for more. Well done, all. And thanks for introducing your crew...it’s always appreciated.
Oh, Josh is a gem. A real keeper.
Thanks Seth, really great to hear you enjoyed the video!
This is what i subscribed to GCN for! Its like the cyclists equivalent of Top Gear!
I find myself coming back to this video once in a while because it's so beautiful
Re-watching all these Si bike packing videos in a Canadian winter, on the eve of 2022, in what, year 2 of COVID (?), and just wanting to get out there. I can't, but these are helping. Thank you.
20:07 josh waving goodbye like your mom on your first day of school
This is so true! He is a nice person :)
Greatest bikepacking video on RUclips so far ! Kudos to both of you !
Awesome, cheers Charles!
Which model of dynamo hub and lights is Josh using ? :)
Experienced camera crew/rider team has got to be a big help, picking/staging great shots
Agreed. This is probably going to be a go-to video to get myself pumped up to ride during the time that I can’t make it out.
Welcome to Morocco gcn anytime there are a lot of beautiful mountain thank you so much for visiting us.
Love Marrocco....great place, nice people!! Liked the goats in the olive trees. Fun video...good work guys. 🚲🙂
Got to be the best GCN EVER... long format, bikepacking and GCN style!Epic.
About 10 minutes into this video I thought "GCN should do a GCN video, video" about how a GCN video is made. And then you touch onto that with introductions of the crew. Good work!
criggie cheers!
The mention of nass nass (coffee) was just so cool ! So authentically moroccan (and not folkloric).
This video brings me back to 2010 where myself & 4 other people flew to marrakesh & cycled over the high atlas down to Zagora through many small towns & villages. Cycles the northern part of the sahara to mohammed, over to Agadir & back to Marrakesh. We did 1200k in 13 days. Best holiday I have ever had. This brings me back to a very good time in my life where we were free. We camped in the high atlas and found some places along the way to have a bed for the night. My bike was a marin hardtail with 26" nobbily tyres and all in my weight with kit for the bike was 16kgs.
Really good video guys
Finally some bikepacking videos!
Stay tuned for more!
WE WANT MORE BIKEPACKING CONTENT! MORE I SAY!
STAY TUNED!
I AM SOOO GLAD YOU DID THIS GUYS! Two of my favorites watching GCN and Bike-packing touring!
Nice Job. The spirit of cycling is alive. My senior project at Prescott College was bike packing from the Needles District in the Canyon Lands, USA, Utah, to Capital Reef National Monument. Circa 1989. We did have one vehicle to support us, a diesel Scout. There were areas where the Scout could not pass. Leaving a cadre of dusty, chilly, cyclists with panniers, to ride and push through the sands of Utah. We we encountered heat, dust devils, cold rain, and snow on our journey. But it was beautiful, and challenging. We did it on bicycles.
Beautiful adventure, GCN! It was refreshing to see something non-racing related. Keep up the awesome work!
John Perez Cheers John!
Best 30 plus minute video in GCN history .
matthew kluge Thanks!
Love watching GCN, and since planning a bike packing trip for later this year, seeing this video has given me so much to think about. Thanks GCN so much for making this and look forward to more like it.
Mabye the best cutted and produced video on the whole channel.
It just flows visually, the music choice is on point and GODDAM WHO CUTTED THIS IS A GENIUS
That was hands down, my favorite video. I have been thinking about getting into bike packing and this has just made me pine for it more.
AMazing Fred, if you go for it let us know!
Just do it the right way. Racks, panniers, proper gear in general, you'll enjoy it far more.
Depends if you plan to travel for 5 days or more.
« Bike packing » is trending because extended weekends are a thing, but of course if you plan to ride for more than five days, mounted racks is the best option.
It's not only about the amount of stuff you carry around (based on the number of days), it's also about how properly it's attached to the bike, how low the center of gravity is and how ugly the whole thing looks. And if weight is an issue, there are lightweight racks and panniers as well for ultralight weekend rides.
5:19 - Props to the bus for giving you guys a proper amount of space when passing!
Actually it was just overtaking the motorbike

one of my favorites gcn videos
Hands down the best GCN video to date! Incredible location, filming and presenting!
I feel genuinely inspired after this, Si and Josh looked like you guys had a real blast! Thanks GCN. Wonderfully made!
Thanks Alex!
morocco looks absolutely gorgeous man i hope to see it in person one day someday but thank you for this experience, your videos are always so well produced it just does the place justice everytime.
Great video. Stunning scenery. Makes me want to visit Morocco.
That was the best GCN video I've watched in a while. So inspiring. Thanks for the amazing content guys!!
That's another level of production video from you guys! Well done. Of course, great content too!!!
simon youre the man, your love for all things cycling can be felt. adds to the channel being a great watch. GCN is sick
Recent GCN subscriber here, and I just came across this video. I actually moved to Morocco as a child in the late 80s because my father's work brought us there (I am from Canada). Everything you showed in this video is identical to the great memories I have of this country. Thanks for bringing me back to that part of my childhood.
Got to say, what a superb video, loved every minute of it and hope you can do more of these in the future. Excellent and thank you
That was awesome! Admittedly I haven’t liked the idea of bike packing or even gravel riding for some time now, but I think this video might have made me want to give them both a shot!
Nice one Richard! That's what we like to hear!
Do it Rich, it's a wonderful way to travel.
Me, too. It looks so... liberating. I’m hopeless at camping and stuff, but am really keen to try some short stages around Japan.
Boy do I love these kind of videos, thank you GCN! - A Moroccan
One of the best videos GCN has ever made. Reminds of the specials that Top 'Gear would Make. Loved it
Love this series
Cycling & see the world
This video honestly could get an award as a short film. Very nicely done and very inspiring! Excellent work GCN
My eyes started to water around day 3. Tom and your editors deserve a raise. Chapeau.
Oh my god. Best GCN video to date, perhaps! And the music was incredible!
AnitCsah Glad you liked it!
Cycling on the road is one of the most thrilling sports and furthermore, cycling in foreign country makes u feel astonishing in every way. All kinds of emotions and feelings are oozing from u. I really enjoyed this video GCN.
So happy when you climb up the mountain, and so sad when you go down.. but your adventure always wait you every country.. i love this video, love this content... god bless you.
What an amazing trip! I can't think of many things i'd rather do than what Simon got to do in this video..Please do more of these trips Simon!
I'm ashamed that its taken me so long to watch this. Truly epic scenes. This and your NC500 adventure are unquestionably the best things GCN have done so far. I'm a pure fanboy for everything GCN related but this is a whole other level of awesomeness. Beautiful work lads. Well done.
Glad to see this type of content, really enjoyed it! Hope to see more in the future, long live GCN
Cheers Juan!
I've watched many many GCN videos over the years and have never commented before. That was just amazing!
Thank you for such an amazing video! Kudos to Tom on the cinematography, just wonderful.
The "Global" part of the Global Cycling Network is now a lot more deeply felt by every cyclist.
You may really start to wear your heart on your sleeve after watching this video.
Thanks ZeroSeriesMMX
Remember I watched this when it came out, and I have thought a lot about it over the years. Watched again today. Still amazing. To this day, it's still the best GCN video. Makes me wanna go out and explore the world
Same
My fave GCN video....by a long way! I emigrate to Holland this year and you have inspired me to try bike packing; ease my way in but will do a "proper" one before I am 60 next year. Thanks GCN.
GCN you guys make Top Notch videos every time and this one is no exception. Absolutely stunning landscapes, professionally moderated & filmed. You are the reason I bought my very first Road bike at the ripe old age of 57, and I'm loving every day on it. Keep up the great work & thanks again
This channel has progressed so much since I found it two years ago and I'm really excited to see what's to come. Informative bike bros are a dime a dozen on youtube but this had elements of HBO content/quality.
The edition is fantastic...and the content is amazing!!! More of this please
Larissa Tasnádi G. Thanks!
This video popped into my feed after I watched the recent GCN post about Majorca, Despite being 3 years old, I watched it anyway. I was in Morocco in 1981 and we drove up high into the Atlas and I can tell you there’s one hell of a lot more tarmac’d roads there now
the most awesome thing GCN has ever done!!!
Michael Felding Thanks Michael!
Don't you remember "GCN Goes Mountain Biking"??? 😉
This is one of the most beautiful gcn videos ever made.
Cheers mates!
Thanks ilias 2405!
Well done. Thanks for putting this together for the GCN subscriber base. Seeing what you put together with a support crew of 3 deepens my respect and admiration for the solo trekker/filmmakers out there.
Viewers, If you like GNC’s take on bike touring don’t stop watching. Search for other bike touring, trekking video. There are great, inspiring, beautifully filmed contribution on RUclips.
Last night I watched the Colorado Gravel race video, and thought that was one of the best GCN videos; this video gets bumped to the very top......I'll keep watching. My sister in law is from Morroco; she's scared of bikes but will LOVE this video. Well done! Thanks guys. DD
the exotic scenery, the calm music, and the fact that you're riding on roads less travelled inspired a great sense of serenity and escapism in me.
now, where should I go?
GCN! Thank you for the cycling adventure
You're welcome Tod!
this is my favourite video on this channel so far, big thumbs up for taking on new challenges!
I love this episode of bike packing. Probably the best travel report as regards CGN bike packing stories. Well done, guys!
Morning si! More of this Pls.
more of this type of vids please GCN! (so Si can get more bike trips).
Morocco is amazing! and it's food oh wow!
Thanks!
Holy crap.... 33 minutes is too short. The content, spirit of cycling, and adventure is pure within this video. This is got to be the most amazing video i have seen so far.
Seriously these are my favorite type videos to watch. Keep them coming !
Plz make a video on how many things need for long ride
Good idea Rajkumar!
im happy that you guys came to my country! :D
The best bikepacking episode of GCN !
Awesome episode. Totally enjoyed the journey and I now want to try my hand at bike packing. Morocco is a beautiful country and the people appeared to be very friendly. Well done to the GCN staff for putting together an awesome video. If It has been 60 or 90 min long I would have watched it as well. 100% enjoyable and educational - Thx
Great account of riding there. My wife and I lived in Morocco for two years recently and I had such a pleasure riding or racing many of those roads, and seeing a few other routes through this video. Such an epic place for cycling with amazing views around every corner, and those breakfasts! Great kit you had with you. As a fellow bike tourer but and old-school one, this modern bike packing is such a different packing and kit philosophy compared all my trips. I recently went on a similar type of tourer in the south African mountain country of Lesotho and paid the price in those high mountains with my heavier old-school kit...
Sounds like you have done some incredible bikepacking!
I’ve always wanted to do Morocco... and boy, I had a smile throughout the whole video.
I’m new to gravel, and feel like a kid... turn where you want, when you want.
Only 8000m of climbing 🤣
More videos like these please.
PS. can’t afford the 3T 😩
I love the Bikepacking videos and was encouraged by the fact that even the most well supplied and kitted out people can have bike/brake squeaks.
Awesome video, Simon, Josh, and GCN production team. Really enjoyable. I wouldn't mind at all seeing a lot more bikepacking and road touring videos from GCN.
Watched this many times. Stiil great! How about... more of these? Thanks GCN.
Cheers Dan, we've got quite a few more videos on Si's bikepacking trip on both GCN and GCN Tech. Who should we send out on the next bikepacking trip?
Wow! What a fast reply! Who's tougher; Katherine or James? Maybe both? Lots of bike packing opportunity here in USA. Keep up the great work. Always informative (Jon/GCN Tech) and fun. Thanks!!!
@@danmathis4046 a USA GCN trip like this would be awesome. Maybe Pacific northwest or around Glacier National Park.
Went on a (car) tour of the Atlas mountains last year. Highly recommended, more so if you're based in Europe.
This was a wonderful video Si. Congratulations to you, Josh and the whole team. Loved I!
Easily the best video produced by GCN, I would like to see more of this type. !! Go on !
Welcome to Morocco!
Best one yet... Feeling inspired... Cheers guys :)
I'm very happy to see these types of videos made on GCN. I've seen a lot of small channels dabble with it but now bikepacking it getting bigger. I've completed a tour across the US with a bikepacking rig and I'm slowly shedding some of the gear so I can ride easier. The gear is helpful but comes secondary after the thrill of an adventure. Cheers folks!
One of the best videos I have watched on GCN! Thanks to everyone in production! :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Props to whoever filmed and edited this. Very Dalessandri/Kolder-inspired.
Glad you enjoyed the video!
I love how pictures changed during every note of guitar
This was very enjoyable. I’m a longtime skater/BMXr turned MTBr and now I’m looking forward to adding a road bike to my collection.. what a beautiful country.
Absolutely love this video, my most watched RUclips video. Preparing for 2022’s adventures!
U welcome guys 🇲🇦🇲🇦
