- The 2024 Atlas Mountain Race (AMR) kicks off today, and over 200 racers will set out to tackle the race's fourth edition across Morocco. This year, racers will travel 800 miles (1,300 kilometers) from Marrakesh to Essaouira. The AMR has become one of the world's most popular self-supported ultra-endurance races, as evidenced by the more than 100 race rig submissions we received. In our latest video, Neil unpacks the rigs and shares some interesting findings.

So cool, to see my rig as the thumbnail 😊😊🥳
Great looking rig, good luck out there, enjoy the down time.
@@BIKEPACKINGcom thank you! I will do exactly that 🥳
clicked for that!
plenty of smart looking bikes shown here.
Knowing one of the competitors; she did the race in 2020 on a gravel bike and now rides a full suspension bike with a dropper post. That should tell you enough about what the people without suspension are going to experience... 😳
Sometimes I like to reduce the ‘problem’ to one simple and essential element: pedaling minutes per hour. Full suspension should enable more pedaling minutes per hour.
I used a 3x on my 29er hardtail in last years AMR. It was great. All the range I needed and all the gears in between!
I have a scott aspect eride 940. Any recomendo for a frame bag that is between the frame not on top . To put the phone? All i find is big ones or for the frame but bellow the seat
Thanks for bringing our attention to this race. And also for mentioning units also in km, kg, etc.
Thank you for putting the visuals on the screen!! For someone who's just trying to learn all of the different bike brands this is very helpful!!
Gr8 stuff, Neil!👍 nice to see what the big dogs run with
Your pie chart for flat versus drop bars is the reverse of what you said in the video
Good catch, I watched it like 5 times and didn't find that. No edits can be made.
What a half assed response, fix it and reupload
Assuming the graph is correct??
I’d expect the reverse, I.e. more flat than drop bars.
@@Cokecanninjaeasy snowflake. He owes you nothing.
Fantastic info mate. Cheers
27.5" might be dead, but 650b is going strong. :D
650b with 2.3 tyres to get me across the AMR this year
The drivetrain that I think is totally under represented is the 2x10, dead reliable, can accommodate either gravel doubles (46/30) or mtb (38/28) and either an 11-36 or an 11-40/42. You can accomplish this with bar end shifters, thumb shifters, tiagra, 105,ultegra and dura ace or with the grx 400 brifters. These transmissions are so reliable it seems like an obvious choice for the ultra endurance segment offering tons of range without much of a weight penalty.
I built up a mtb hardtail for more longer road, gravel , bridle off road use. And gear ratio wise I did what you mention .36/26 front and 11/40 back . Ideally on another upgrade would like to get a 42 on the back and a 24 on the front , that would be near perfect I reckons . Only thing is I built it up on 27.5 frame which maybe an error for long distance cycling , though lots of gravel bikes on 27.5 still in uk . Last year someone used a triple crank and mentioned it worked great 😅
42/22 and 40/22 on my two bikes. I like a tight cassette jump when in the big ring.
I’d love to have that setup. 46/30 and 11/40 mechanical. Hard to imagine what you couldn’t do with that
Thanks a lot for this instructive video and for all others ! ( Frame models and wheels would also have been nice ) Have a good ride
I really love your videos...it made my like bike packing ❤
But today I was bike packing in my local trails and I got to a place that doesn't have any type of road...there was nothing ..just the dirt and a lot of rocks..I had a hard time sooo can you make a video about choosing the terrain right or what to do in these types of situations...
Much love for your videos ❤
Awesome!!!
It's an honor to see Jack Pack bags on this rigs. Two riders from Poland has full set of JackPack's on AMR. Thanks to Aleksander Pachulski and Dawid McKoper!
Noticed that, great stuff.
Mason! So much Mason. Love it!
How many steel , carbon , aluminum ? Fork travel ?
Danke!
Really appreciate this, cheers!
I would love to see a more detailed breakdown on what kind of dynamo hubs and, to a lesser extent, lights/chargers used.
I was about to buy a Tailfin Aeropack for this year, guess I better hold off a bit! 👀
Hey, Nice video as usual! It would have been great to know the percentage of flats vs clips pedals!
Thanks for the idea!
I love 29+ as it rides well in sandy/muddy/rocky conditions and the volume allows me to forego front suspension. The one drawback is pavement speed, it rolls much slower than lower volume tires.
I think it will also be very interesting to analyse the bike settings e.g. how many riders have their handle bar same height as their saddle. How many went with zero setback, how many pushes saddle all the way to the front etc
My mescal tires (27.5 / 2.25 and 29 / 2.6) have developed cracks along each lug, after 8 months. Two years in a row. This makes them pretty much crap at 90 dollars per tire. What’s up, Victoria?
I find it interesting that so few people are using Rohloff internal hub gearing.
I thinks its a really heavy system, isnt it?
Is there any detail about the bike frame material? carbon or alloy or steel?
I saw a Surly there. Would be interesting to know how capable these ATBs are for these types of events as they're fully rigid and on the heavy side.
Can complete it easy enough. No chance at winning with that weight. In reality there's about 3 people with any shot at winning this race. The rest are soon-to-be-retirees with disposable income to blow before they're too old. What those folks ride is mostly irrelevant as they aren't in the race.
I never thought I'd see tractor feed printer paper for personal use anymore. Still sporting a dot matrix printer?
Haha, no kidding. Yeah, my kids daycare apparently has loads of it. 🔥
I see a diiference in choices from the Divide and Atlas based on financial choices.
I'd like to see a survey on saddle height In relation to handlebars ,eg level ,higher or lower .
Mezcal is a new Geax Saguaro - best tire ever.
I would like to know what the most average setup among the participants was. Is there anyone who hit every number one spot of the categories?
Where are the Box drivertrain riders at?!
Graph or your statement on drop vs flat bars: which was correct?
My statement, thanks for checking in, sorry about that.
So MTB type tires are getting narrower in use while road and gravel continue to widen? Will we all eventually meet at 2.0? 😉😬. I’d love to know if any rider just used tubes not tubeless and if anyone rides no chamois.
No love for 27.5 😢
Regarding the lone single-speeder: my impression is SS is more popular with North American riders, and with only 4 US and 4 Canadians, that may explain it.
Same impression here.
Taking your bike for a walk 🤷♀️ Very much an American thing.
Wonder what the stats look like when you remove sponsored riders?
I think it’s interesting the lack of SS on overseas events vrs USa events?
Euro riders catch the racing bug at a very tender age.
Everybody remembers their first official race, let aside their first victory.
Whether they raced road bikes, MTBs, BMXs even, is irrelevant, once a racer, always a racer.
SS rider vs Geared bike rider in the elite category stands no chance, what’s the point of entering a *race* you can’t win ?
My bike parts reseller has like 42 different Pirelli "Scorpion" tires. Thats way too much to even interest me in digging deeper. Guess I have to stay with Mezcal and Specialized Rhombus 🙂
oh, really? I saw one and I the look of it....I guess I was bound to like one of them. This one caught my attention. www.pirelli.com/tyres/en-ww/bike/tyres/catalogue/scorpion-xc-s
Pirelli XC RC Lite 2.25 I would guess.
The race has been delayed until tomorrow🤞 the first and heaviest rain in months. Basically like being back in England 😂
Hi thanks for the video I sent in my Details
I am from Dublin Ireland 🇮🇪 you did not represent us thanks Dave Tilly.
I had to SOS out of the race due to a broken Collar bone.
Keep up the great work
Oh no, heal up Dave!
it took a lot of time to count it all
Took me a solid day to count everything.
@@BIKEPACKINGcom But was interesting
Start is delayed 24 hrs due to weather
oh dang, thanks for the heads up!
Any reason the UK is active on the bikepacking scene?
Not 100% sure, but bike culture in the UK is pretty strong. After the United States, the UK is our largest audience on the channel.
English weather
Scotland
No idea, but our access policies must help plus wild camping is easy (and fully legal in Scotland along with Right To Roam) - might be one (of many) reasons.🏴
@@gunterbartos2979#satire
Surprised, that there were no surlys! Why is that?
Because its a race in N. Africa mostly fielded by Europeans...
Pie Chart at 2:33 is mislabeled based on what you said. Flat and Drop should be swapped.
Check the other comments. 😜
29 wheel is king!
i do wonder why UK lioves hardcore cycling so much?
Small island, want to get off it.
Are the nationalities represent where they live now or their nationality? Because Justinas is Lithuanian afaik.
I think nationalities are based on their passport...
It's more likely based on what they put on the entry form, which doesn't always match passport. @@GroundCRow
Even tho, in their race tracker there are 3 Lithuanians racing, and Lithuanian won. So yeah.@@firsthippy
@@Ignash I race under one nationality and the passport I travel with is another. The point I'm making is simply where the info most likely comes from.
got it@@firsthippy
hardtails r rulin
I feel like the term "bikepacking race" is an oxymoron. It's the antithesis of what bikepacking is about for me personally lol.
Ultra-endurance is another term I use. But whatever it is, its certainly aspirational to many.
Hey, what about gender of the riders?
We didn't gather that information, you may be able to find more information on the AMR tracking page.
What’s your reason to not give men/women/others ratio?
Because it's "rigs" not "riders" of the AMR?
@@firsthippy so why would they talk about riders nationality and age?
