Michael Pitt was not fired that is a rumor. Sure he was difficult to work with but many good actors are. Jimmy's story came to an end and that is why he was killed off. Terry Winter did not want to short change the audience because there is no way Nucky would have let Jimmy live.

Being professional and easy to work with is a huge deal in the movies, especially in Hollywood where getting things done quickly and within budget is a massive concern. There are a huge amount of really, really talented actors in the world but not all of them are capable of showing up, every day, nailing their takes in two or three tries whilst getting on with everyone that matters on set, and then come in the next day and do it all over again for months at a time. Hell this is essentially what happened to Edward Norton; fantastically talented actor who absolutely disappears into every role he plays but has never really achieved the stardom of a lot of lesser actors because he has a reputation for being hard to work with and wanting to make constant changes to his character and the script mid-production.

Unfortunately the actor playing the Commodore was battling cancer at the time so he could not really shoot all the scenes they needed of him and the director and writers changed the script. That's why we also see so little of the commodore and when we see him he's either sitting or laying down, except for some scenes in the early part of the season which were shot before his illness. I don't know how much of an ass Michael Pitt is, but his character was not killed of because of that.
Ok but that only explains that they had to wrap up the Commodore arc; how long Jimmy sticks around is another question. It's plausible _both_ stories about why they wrote off the Commodore and Jimmy are true. I suppose it's also in the realm of possibility that the anecdotes about Pitt being hard to work with are untrue. Show business gossip being what it is, guess we'll never know for certain.

This story about mr.pitt is total bullshit , first of all he wasn't fired from the show they were kill his character down the road anyways. There is a video here on youtube from the produce of the show of Boardwalk empire i fogot his name. He explains why they had to kill his character so early in shows run, he mention it had to do with Mr. Colemans character that he played. Mr. Coleman had cancer so they didn't know how long he would be on the show. Unfortunately Mr. Pitts character was connected to mr.colemans character on the show and thats why he was killed off. This story is a bunch of lies. The produce of the show said that. Mr. Pitt was very professional a good actor .
