      My Auntie’s house was full of tatted doilies, but when she passed, my cousin threw every one of them away. To give you an idea of how heartbreaking that was, every flat surface in her home had a doily on it. No joke…. there were even doilies on her kitchen counter underneath the canisters and on the wide windowsills! Such a waste. 😞

    I have made a doily with a pineapple motif, using a 2.5 mm hook and thread. I love it because it reminds me of something in my youth where I saw one. I invested in a lamp which has a magnifying glass in it. It's actually used to do soldering work on electronics. However, it's great when working small. For me, a soldering lamp made the job so much easier. The magnifying glass makes it look like working normal size and the bright light helps to illuminate the thread. So, I found working small really great! :)

    • @JaydaInStitches
      @JaydaInStitches  Год назад

      Hi Nana, Thank you for watching! Thread weight categories run opposite of Yarn weight categories. The larger a number in yarn, the larger/thicker the yarn. The larger the number in thread, the thinner the thread. So an 80 crochet thread is crazy thin, like sewing thread, but a 1 crochet thread is about the size as a size 1 yarn. 🌞

    I love making doilies. I’ve used size 10 thread or smaller, like sewing thread. The last doilies I made was pineapple doilies. I’ve been making them since I was 15 years old. I will need to get some cotton thread to make your doilies

    My first introduction to crochet was with my grandma. (I'm 67, almost!) She was babysitting us rambunctious kids way back when I was about 10 to12.. She taught my sister and I how to chain. She left me with practicing my chains. She pulled out another ball of thread and started a doillie off the top of her head! I wanted to do that!! I think her patience level was pretty low with all of us kids. (We were brats, actually!! ...lol) She told me to keep practicing my chain. She never ended up teaching me more, though had I asked her when it was just me or even my sister, too, she might have continued on in lessons. I'm sure her mother and possibly grandma too, had taught her all she knew. She knew all the stitches and combinations to design a doillie! All were memorized! That fascinates me! I later learned on my own with magazines, mainly. I have since used many patterns and made many doilies over the past 50 some years. None off the top of my head like Grandma could!! ❤️

      Our grandmothers and great grandmothers didn't have the luxury of magazines and the internet, I worry sometimes that our own brains might be losing out on something by not having to remember it all!!

    The most amusing thing to me about working with thread is that if you do a large doily or other large project, and then you pick up a J hook and start working on something with yarn, it feels like you are handling something gigantic. 😀 Funny how the brain and hands get used to something.

    I love this, and your very clear instructions. They are wonderful. I made out of a finer yarn. Could you please tell me how to make just a couple of rows larger before the motif. Or at least one? I want it for under my basket on kitchen counter . About 10-11 inches in diameter .
    Thank you so much. Have a wonderful day!

      Hi Linda, it might change the number of petals, but you could make the circular part larger by a few more rows, continuing with the increase math.

    Nothing to with doilies, and I know we’re only halfway through the year, but I wanted to suggest an idea for next year’s monthly blanket….A monthly C2C square, I’ve only seen one done with gnomes, but I’m sure you could do other things, such as a snowman/snowflake for January, Hearts for February, a Leprechaun Hat for March, etc…

    Dollies were made to protect chair backs and were called antimacasser. Men used hair products that had oil in them. This was the practice in the late 19th and early 20th centuries

      Hi Linda. I typically use cotton for making scrubbies, size 4 medium weight. I've used Bernat Handicrafter and Bernat Scrubby and I like them both. I found mine at Walmart, but I live in Canada so you might have better luck on line 😊

    Stayed with this. As a total beginner I made something a bit like it 😅 but I will persevere because this lady explains things SO well and I feel I’ll have a chance of becoming a lot better. Can anyone advise the best yarn for this? It looks so stiff and pretty, I used my normal DK wool (for knitting and it was splitting all over the place and is also really floppy. I am in UK and would appreciate the help.

      @JaydaInStitches  Месяц назад

      Hi! You can use larger yarn if you like, especially if you're a beginner you might find that easier. We actually have a larger version of this (made with regular size 4 medium yarn) linked in the description box if you want to check that out too😊

    Pattern Suggestion. Fillet Poncho! Solid ( Like your Poncho w/ Fringe) or open (Like the Summer Love Poncho). Perfect for warmer weather because of the open work. :D
