imagine waking up in the morning and seeing this guy in your backyard just eating your plants
😆 That would be weird as hell! Looks like he doesn't cross into private property unless personally invited, though.
Ga damn it. Jimmy get the shovel that weird guy is back and he's taking our plants again.
@@svpremefrank8503 🤣🤣🤣
Or grubs lol
And the damn grub, that was disgusting
This man ate a grub without hesitation but refused to bite a lemon
he explained why he didn't. were you not paying attention?
Candis chill lmao
*amateur*
Candis You sound like my teacher
Bruh watch the buzzfeed video on him he literally eats roadkill and wild squirrels
Not wearing shoes in the city sounds like a good way to get glass in your foot.
In my city, needles
Not just glass in the city 😬
Exactly completely agree
yeah, there was zero justification for him not wearing shoes other than he just doesn't like wearing shoes. which is fine. just say that! don't turn it into some earthy, 'it's just me saving the planet in a different way' schtick.
His feet probably have became like Toph
Next time please try "We made a 3-course meal out of foraged food in NEW YORK" lol
David Smadja so... rats and roaches?
There's food growing in New York. I found a fig tree in the Tudor City parks, and there are herbs growing in the indoor garden at the Ford Foundation Center. The corms of canna are edible, growing in Bryant Park (though they may be PO'ed when you start digging up their landscaping). And there are youtube videos about foraging in Manhattan parks. Of course, that's illegal. :)
There’s actually a guy that shows you how to forage in NYC. I also have mulberry trees all around my apartment with tons of fruit in the summer time.
I will do this for you David, next time I'm there. Join me on my channel at: ruclips.net/user/robjgreenfield
TaraVision8 how?? I assume it’s all about perfect timing to plant and grow? Cause I live in the NYC area too, the environments are soooo complex
I think they should have juiced some of those berries for the shaved ice. Like half berry juice and half lemon juice.
My thought exactly.... Like hello. Natural sugar
Or a berry syrup to add on top
Elensila2718 or crushed and just mixed right in..... 😋
Me too!
But what were those berries?
Now I suddenly wanna go forage in a forest and live off the land
Watch me die
Take me with you sister 😁
Hi Trina!
There's a simple rule to stay out of trouble: Only eat something if you are 100% certain of what it is.
I recommend seeking out people in your area who can take you out foraging to teach you. They are there if you look for them!
Health and happiness to you,
Rob (from the video)
LMAOOO
LMAO😂
@@Robin.Greenfield Thank you so much, Rob! Same to you(:
merle, a vegan watching a guy eat a live animal and then spit it out I FEEL BAD FOR LAUGHING
You can read my further thoughts on some of the not so obvious or mainstream realities of veganism here: www.robgreenfield.tv/veganism
@laura bittner I thought all vegans knew they can't be 100% cruelty free. However, a vegan diet is the closest to that. Now that we know how insects feel pain I can't understand why someone would go from vegan to eating a bug alive.
@@user-mg3jz9em9f Most recent studies indicate that is most likely not true. It's very unlikely they do feel pain.
c Well it’s not just bugs he just rationalized that no one can be cruelty free so what is eating an animal every once in a while if it isn’t processed and tortured its entire life. He had to eat a squirrel and some fish in order to stay healthy so there wasn’t really a way around it for him
Also since it isn’t coming from a farm or industry it is about as close to natural predation as you can get
just a tip for foods that tend to get slimy after cooking. Dry roast them for a few minutes. we Indians eat a lot of Okra and Okra can be extremely slimy when cooked with any fluid. we simply dry roast it on a pan without any oil till it gets a bit roasted on the edges and then add it to any soup or curry. now your soup wont turn slimy. try the same with the cactus. the cactus is so tender im sure simply dry roasting it with a pinch of salt and a few dried herbs should taste awesome. try it and see how it goes.
Or leave it out in the sun for a day after having sliced them. We do that with out okra and bitter melons
Dry roasting works so damn well with slimy food. I strongly agree here.. I would advice adding the salt later tho..
@@shanpadarath2931 yes yes yes
@@natashadutta977 obviously dear once its used in a curry or Subzi you do add salt. roasting is just the prep to avoid the slime.
I do the same with mushrooms

Hi Aiswarya!
Sending lots of love to you!

Watch his buzzfeed vid about him only eating foraged stuff for a year. It’s pretty incredible. I like how buzzfeed/goodful have such chill vegan/vegetarians.
@@Robin.Greenfield OH. MY.GOD.
I'm sorry if that joke was inappropriate, Rob 😬.
But honestly, I love the work you're doing. It's sooo inspiring. I've made major changes to my lifestyle after having watched videos from people like you (no grub eating involved, though). I hope you live a healthy, safe, and fruitful life. Good luck, man! 😊🤞
I strongly suggest not to use sea salt, especially if it is sourced from areas close to the beach. it is full of microplastics nano-sized that you ate with the salt. :(
Apart from that: wow! :)
Shut up
@@Snapster416 Aw, what a distinguished comment! Thanks, so lovely! Have a nice day and don´t eat too much plastics, ok? ;)
SnapHappy what are you? 9?
Where do u think salt comes from then?
86upsmaya sea salt is often in purified pools which are filtered and refined to remove impurities and microplastics.
At 10:48 you can tell that Rob definitely feels most at home in an outdoor kitchen where food scraps will just biodegrade when thrown behind oneself. I love it.
They could have blended the berries with the lemon for a bit of sweetness
6 year old me “outdoor cooking” : “mmmm, who wants some organic mystery leaf salad?!”
Me now : realizing that the salad was probably edible
I don’t recommend foraging in large cities, just cause it’s edible, doesn’t mean it hasn’t been washed by harsh chemicals, such as acid rain, pesticides or pollution itself.
Yeah, definitely be careful
Acid rain is not directly harmful.
We aren't just talking about acid rain anyways (^) but living in a city means the plants are likely have been exposed to chemicals. Foraging in rural areas can come in handy without risking using polluted plants.
U sure what u buy in stores are chemical free?
86upsmaya if you’re alright with carbon emissions then this isn’t a problem but I’m sure every city in every country has animals or insects. Not only that lousy people don’t usually pick up their pets poop. But pesticides are different, you have cars that lose oil, carbon monoxide and sulfates in acid raid that aren’t the best for you. But I have no doubt that someone up your road or anyone’s road has used pesticides.
Merle: gives an in-depth explanation of the potato soup and how boiling it will bring out the flavor
Rob: *"it's soup."*
I love it jdkdkdkd
Lol
Just a tip for future videos: We are living vicariously through you, so when you taste things please describe the flavors. It's one thing to know the texture, but a whole other to have an idea as to what the tastes are in a food video
Yes, that's why I love emmymadeinjapan. She explains it so well that I feel like I'm the one eating the dish
did i hear that right. he said he hasn’t worn shoes for 8 years?? sir how about winter in the uk??
he lived in florida for awhile
dont think he lives in the uk
I'm even more curious as to what he does if he has to enter public buildings with all that dirt on him
I think he meant while foraging
I wear shoes sometimes, just not most of the time. I wear shoes when I am in cold places.
I write more about that here if you're interested: www.robgreenfield.tv/barefoot
Alright, just for the people that don't know, most basic store bought salt is fortified with Iodine (I think there is a law for it) it helps your thyroid and believe me you are better off with the Iodine fortified salt, so before you go all crazy hunting for free salt, keep this in mind. Side note: no disrespect to anyone, I just want people to avoid an unnecessary risk.
True dat, if you don't get enough iodine you can get some nasty weird bump things
100% true!! you can also get iodine from seaweed! maybe fish for some seaweed while you collect sea water??
But I don’t think you need it though if you live near the sea anyway...I mean whenever im in a coastal region I can taste the salt even in the air
People with hashimotos should stay away from iodinised salt!
Usually only people in developing countries or people with specific dietary needs need iodized salt in their diet. If you live in a developed country, you should be getting most of your necessary iodine from just a regular balanced diet since iodine is found in foods such as fish, shrimp, eggs, and seaweed.
the whole time rob was foraging my brain was just " no he probably wont pick that. it's just a bush; non-edible green bush. he's just messing w us" and then he picks it and says what it acc is and I turn into the pikachu meme
Hi Jana!
Yes, once you learn the plants the whole world around you changes.
It's worth learning them, even if you never eat them. But once you know them you'll probably want to start incorporating them into your life.

The man expected another high five in the end, the woman threw him off with the hug.
I'm definitely a hugger, but you're right for some reason was thinking high five!
I would be worried about what pesticides are used on the plants that came from random areas.
I agree, but grocery food had so much pesticides and added harmful chemicals that, unless you grow it yourself, is harmful anyway.
@@jessicaorozco1749 You're right, but arguiably, there's less restrictions on home-use of pesticides. Just calls for a good rinse and boil
@@jessicaorozco1749 But farmers have regulations in place that decide how many pesticides they can use, unfortunately there are no such regulations for gardens in the US as far as I know.
Thinking about eating foods growing by the roadside in LA, with whatever might have been sprayed on them... and then they make salt from the ocean water. LA ocean water.
What do u think salt is made of then?
@@86upsmaya BELOVED. It is taken from the sea and sanitised.
@@86upsmaya it's mainly taken from mountains, as well as PURE pools. You really shouldn't be getting your salt from dirty, polluted ocean water.
@@givernymiedema6036 well,im from an island nation and all our salt comes from the ocean. Ofcourse they are purified before consumption.
@@86upsmaya The whole point of the original comment was to say that having non purified water from a polluted area is not a good idea. There's also quite a big difference in pollution levels of the water you get your salt from and the water around LA.

I'm all for foraging, but they need a cooking 101 class. The food looked so bland! Roast the potatoes, build some color and flavor!
they need oil tho
Gottalove Walruses I think the whole thing was that they only have to cook with the things that they foraged so they couldn’t use spices
Hi there guy who loves the Walruses,
This was not the absolute tastiest meal, but we were pretty limited in that I had never foraged in LA and was new to the plants in the area. I had just spent a year growing and foraging 100% of my food in Florida and ate over 300 species of food. I made many incredibly tasty meals. If I stayed in LA longer we'd be onto gourmet soon.
You can see them here: www.robgreenfield.tv/foodfreedomfoods
Health and happiness to you!
Gottalove Walruses
The neighborhood they were in probably didn’t provide many spices and they need oil to roast potatoes.
@@Mr_Kezu lemon peel has some oil...
I would've used the lemon zest, rosemary, salt and a spray of lemon to roast the potatoes. Greek style! 🙂
The crushed up berries would've made a nice salad dressing over the greens with some lemon juice & salt.

The dutty ocean water lawwwwd
Same thing Im thinking.
😂😂
I really didn't know that making your own salt from seawater in a pan is possible. Can't believe I haven't thought of that lol. 😂 I tried when I was little to make my own salt but I literally left the saltwater that I got in a container under the sun to naturally evaporate. I thought that that was the only way to make salt. 😆😂
It was how everyone used to make it centuries ago.
I’m not sure I’d recommend doing it now though. The ocean was a lot less polluted once upon a time.
@@emmakatenotcakeyeah I was thinking about all the oil and other pollution sediments that would be retained with that salt
@@TheFighterfemme Some might say that because you're boiling it and consuming it such small quantities it would be okay, but I'm not sure it's a risk worth taking relative to the other foraging hacks.
Besides, my nearest beaches are in Port Phillip Bay, and that's definitely a big fat no on account of how dirty it is.
@@emmakatenotcake The micro plastics might be your biggest concern
The only problem is, you’re condensing whatever solids are in your water. So you’ll get a full dose of all the pollutants in the ocean off of LA.
Did he eat that grub? OMG!!!
At least he recycled the nutrients. 😭😂
I grew up in the countryside so I relate to this
The way he said "me too" at 11:38 was adorable
for the greens to Maintain the nutrients i would dunk it in hot water just for a minute and take them out-- dont cook tender leaves till they slump as they loose their nutritional value. and leaving it a tad crisp adds to the fiber content too.
my favorite idea that i've seen so far is for him to do an urban forage. i live in a more busy suburb-ish area, so this would be really cool to see and learn from!
This is amazing quarantine content; reminds me when going out was allowed!!

" it can be done everywhere" like I'm not saying it's wrong but canada kills everything because of the cold soooooo.... come over and see what our cold has
On his channel he talks about how he lived only on foraged foods living in the northern US (I want to say Wisconsin). Although it might be impossible to live off of foraged/home grown goods entirely it is definitely admirable to try and do MORE of it.
I'm pretty sure Rob's actually thinking of trying this in Wisconsin! It could definitely be done, but probably not freshly foraged year round, and it would likely involve more animal foods and preserved foods. On his channel, Rob talks a bit more about his year growing and foraging 100% of his food and shows some of his preserved foods :)
Persevered, canned, dried and storaged food in winter. Not at all impossible living of completely foraged and homegrown food in Canada. People has survived for ages without supermarkets in Canada, but obviously can be difficult getting into if you're coming from the city for example. But not impossible I would say
Do you think people just... didn't exist in Canada before there were stores for pre-packaged food...?

"It's right there in the ocean". Foo, I live like 2.5 hours from the ocean. There's no freaking way I'm spending gas to forage some damn salt.
I hope he asked before he snatched all those lemons. That’s more than “a few”
Neighbour : Why's this man and camera crew doing with my lemons?
Well he got most of them from the ground and I guess nobody would be mad, if a person would harvest a bunch of lemons.
I live in AZ where a lot of people have lemon trees, etc. The fruit just lays on the ground rotting. Even if you have the true for the fruit you could never eat it all. I can't imagine anyone getting upset that he picked a few lemons.
its from a community garden
Please do more vids like that. I did love to watch more outdoor vids like forage and cooking outdoor.
Me after watching this video: so I was walking down the sidewalk in this neighborhood and found a portal that leads me to a world full of green unicorns and golden rainbow spitting frogs.

So "foraging" is actually taking ingredients from other people's gardens. Really?
Daniel Furuno well thats what public gardens are for
In urban environments yeah

One of my favorite ways is to simply sautee leafy greens with olive oil, salt and lemon juice. Other herbs are good to add to.

You're supposed to boil out the slimness with lots of salt and water unless you're grilling which also drains out the slime.
