The concept of refill station is really amazing, like even if you are not following a zero waste movement, you still prevent a lot of plastic containers from ending in the sea.

No you don't. The Western world doesn't dump garbage in the ocean. We use landfills so the issue of plastic is almost non existent. It's Asia and Africa that is dumping their waste in the ocean and causing all this plastic pollution.

Historically, this is accurate. For example, when processed foods came out (think nabisco and sliced bread) it was expensive and could only be afforded by the well-to-do. As demand kept rising, the cost of processed foods went down and now they can be purchased by all. Now, we are seeing the reversal where the wealthy are able to afford fresh, organic foods and the poor have to make do with processed foods and items in plastic. Eventually, these organic and plastic-free items will become cheaper, especially as competition increases. I remember when organic avocados wee $3 a pop. Now I can get them for $1.50.

True but price will come down as people begin to switch to this model of commerce (were it to catch on). One thing is certain though; what we’ve been doing isn’t sustainable.

The big problem with plastic single use containers is that the cost of "disposal" is not baked in the cost of the product. The plastics industry needs to be held responsible for the clean up of the massive amount of plastic that gets tossed into the oceans. Then the true cost of "cheap" plastic will be in line with the real cost of their use.

That isn't an issue for the West. That is an Asian issue. They are the ones throwing their trash in the oceans not the rest of the world.
@@WaterspoutsOfTheDeep Western countries (which produce a large percentage of the waste per capita) used to send their plastic waste to China for recycling. Now China has too much domestic capacity and closed their borders to plastic waste imports. Western countries then shifted to countries like Vietnam (which are now nearing capacity).
And it is not only ocean plastic that is the issue. It's not like a large percentage of US plastic gets recycled because it is a low value "dirty" raw material (that needs to be cleaned of food residue, etc.); especially when clean virgin PET and PE pellets are so cheap. That is largely the problem. The profit is reaped by the plastic manufacturers and the companies that make the products. But the cost of disposal for those packages are borne by municipalities that have to find somewhere to dispose/recycle the waste. As it is, there is no financial incentive in the west to reduce plastic use. It is only by choice and those choices are often a bit more expensive.

When we asians (Chinese, arab, koreans, turks ect) do it and we also do it with other containers for other products like storing food or seeds, people start calling us cheap and "unhygienic" or that we're "backwards"
But when an American LA resident does it it's suddenly "cool and innovative"

There is one that’s similar! Package Free Shop is a shop opened by Lauren Singer (her channel is know as trash is for tossers here on youtube) and they have products that help you to start a zero waste lifestyle as well as bulk products of things like dish soap, shampoo, etc. that you can refill there.

It’s expensive because there’s not very high demand, more people need to buy from these stores so they can sell cheaper!
The issue is a lot of "eco-friendly" shops jack up their prices but you can easily find some of the products cheaper at other stores or directly from the vendor.
Also add on some of these places have a pretentious air and some of the owners can be preachy and unfriendly.

I'm 34 years old now, in my country when I was a child we used to bring our bottle to buy milk from shop, we buy hard soap with no package, we shop every week our fruits and vegetables with our own dom plant shopping bag, and we have it for generations, we buy meat rolls in paper,
Every year my mom buy fresh harvested olives, and we take them to olive press we would have our holl year reserve of olive oil, at the summer we buy wheat for the holl year.
we used buy good quality clothes 2 times a year, we didn't care about fashion

Alexa Raven You can make your own soap from Dr Bronners castile soap. It lasts so long because it is very concentrated (you have dilute it) and then you can reuse the container afterwards. It can be for literally everything, dish soap, laundry detergent, body soap, face soap, hand soap, you name it

I’m surprised I didn’t see more bars of things. Bar soap for body and laundry, lotion bars, deodorant bars. There’s just so many things that could come in solid form.

A bunch of people dont like them, me inclueded. I have tried them they dont work or simply worse for my skin and hair (bar shampoo makes my hair look disgusting) I would be happy with this system if it was reasonably priced but sadly most zero waste stores have over the top prices.

@@cyberpunklain i did, also it was not greasy, well, it was sticky and matte at the same time with hella dry ends. looked and felt awful. Tried more than one, all similar. And it is too expensive to search for the one that works. Even the house brand ones are more expensive than a brand name shampoo and i dont need more overpriced handsoap. Maybe when the prices drop i will try again but it is not worth it for me right now

0:07 I and most other Americans already have a plastic-free version of eating utensils, it's called silverware and I have a drawer full of it in my kitchen, and yes you can reuse it.
Those utensils are meant for on the go eating. So you won't get plastic silverware at fast food restaurants for example. Yes metal is reusable but it's heavy so it's better to have a bamboo utensil set so it's lightweight and easy to carry around.
Edit y'all are very mean (I don't even own bamboo utensils I just tried to explain why some people have them)

I love this concept. This seems like an easier way to achieve as close to a zero waste lifestyle as possible. It doesn't feel intimidating at all. Plus I love the idea of being able to bring in your own containers.

Buzzfeed is based in LA. They offer free content. They have other locations, channels, and subdivisions that cover an array of sociocultural topics. If you wanna know about stores “all over the country” to satisfy your own curiosity, do your own research. This beautiful video was done and it’s always one complaining about some s-t that they easily do themselves.

They fly producers all over the world for content (see Worth It), why can't they do that and feature more sustainable options. There's a store like this in Vancouver Canada called the soap dispensary. If you live in Washington State where apparently bringing your own containers is illegal, you can make a trip up north! Actually all border states with Canada can come up. We have Bulk Barn another zero waste option across the country.
The idea is really game changing it’s just too expensive and money that most families don’t have to spare.

same. i generally have a dry scalp so i have to use head and shoulders shampoo. i have a favorite conditioner i use. bar and hand soap i don’t really care what i use as long as it doesn’t make my skin feel weird after. laundry detergent needs a stain fighter for me. i can’t use plain deodorant because i sweat a lot normally even with the 11.4% antiperspirant i’m using now.
They should make this available everywhere and affordable and made of fragrance free, dye free, made of clean ingredients!
Shark tank needs to invest to make this global! We need it!!

I can get behind this more than the zero-waste bulk grocery stores. Those are just not practical for people with food intolerances, due to the risk of cross-contamination. I suppose, people with allergies could have problems with bulk home supplies, too.
@@h.l.211 Cross-contamination because things aren't in sealed packages. Particles fly all over. Bulk sections at stores usually have a warning about that.
There's a bulk food store in Vancouver that has that covered too. The staff do all the refilling. You tell them what you want and they'll refill it for you. The Soap Dispensary is in Vancouver Canada

I really like how this store is mindful of the community and tries to be inclusive to people who might not be familiar with the concept. The Spanish instructions were also very thoughtful. Not many places attempt to be inclusive.
Or people could just learn English and show some respect to the country they are in.

The signs being translated into other languages are helpful while people learn or if they only speak basic English. Update me when you learn another language fluently because it takes a lot of practice and time, especially if you are an adult.

I really want to start a zero waste lifestyle but the one that is holding me back is how expensive these products:(
joanay you don’t have to buy these products. You could make your own, it’s very cheap. There’s many ideas out there. The initial cost might be a little more expensive but in the long term they are truly cheaper. I make my own powder laundry detergent and it costs me roughly $20 but it lasts me a whole year. I get the big box of 20 Mule Team Borax, the big box of Arm and Hammer washing soda, and whatever smelling beads you want to use and mix that all up in a 5 gallon bucket and keep it in the bucket. To scoop it out I use the cap that came with the smelling beads. The borax and washing soda come in a cardboard box, the smelling beads is plastic unfortunately. The gallon bucket I use is also plastic but I’ve been reusing it just for the detergent for three years and it’s still going strong. The cost of the products may differ where we live but it’s still cheap in the long run

Refills isn’t exactly new. 20 years ago in Mexico I remember people refilled 2-liter soda bottles, propane tanks, water bottles, and so on.

Change out a section of the local supermarket and put this concept into the supermarket! I think the problem is that most consumers buy products that uses plastic out of convenience! And with the convenience of buying body soaps and detergent at a supermarket, these shops close faster than they should to bring benefit to the community.
Putting these concepts into major supermarkets like Walmart, Woolies and any major supermarkets will then greatly reduce plastic waste because of the increase accessibility to plastic free products! Love the idea. Can’t wait for this to be the mainstream way of grocery shopping!
I wish being sustainable wasn't so expensive. Also, I would eat meat alternatives but they are costly. I'm thinking if you want more customers you have to lower the prices and not worry so much about a high profit and more about actually helping people become more sustainable

It can totally depend on location for things like tofu that aren't as widespread in food deserts, but even replacing a couple meals of meat a week with beans helps, and it's cheaper! If you buy a 5 lb bag of chicken breasts from walmart, that's 112 g protein for $1.95. A 2 lb bag of black beans gives you 208 g protein for $2.22.
That comes out to 94 g protein/dollar for black beans and 57 g protein/dollar for chicken.
Obviously there are things to take into account beside just protein, but the point I'm trying to make is that it definitely is financially possible and even helpful for a lot of people to make some sort of small change. :)

a large amount of your environment footprint can be reduced if stop eating beef and replace it with chicken. also LA is an expensive city, the way that they are offering the product is probably more expensive than the usual. there are thousands of things one can do to reduce their footprint beyond going vegan and eliminating all plastics in their consumption. i like the youtuber sedona christina if you want to learn more
Being sustainable doesn’t have to be expensive. Even doing the little things help as long as you’re trying. Research the products you buy. Make educated decisions as a consumer. A lot of people think you have to be all in and get intimidated so they end up not doing anything. But doing little things here and there is way better than not doing anything at all. You just have to try your best.

It looks nice and would love to try but the prices are very high I know it’s organic and natural. But it’s very expensive. 5.87 an oz of toothpaste. Or .85 cent an oz of soap. That’s going to coast $18 for pound of soap. Nice idea but can’t afford it.

Would be neat to see a video on zero waste outside of a big city like LA or outside of California. Being from a rural community it’s hard to find zero waste options. I’m lucky and a few Amish shops that provide some items but nothing like this.
This seems like an easy thing to do in just about any store.
Have the companies ship huge drums out once a week or so, depending on the order from the store and how much they usually sell, refill a station and let customers bring in their bottles. (Kinda like water bottle stations fir the 5 gallon jugs)
You can also make things in dissolvable containers or bars or soap, lotion, etc.

@@vandy5206 a lot of brands are owned by larger names and corporations, so it could be a possible to have a dispensary that did multiple items.
But I don't think in the long run it would make more waste, it would however take up more space in the store which would be the biggest obstacle I'd presume.

anonym I do need different option. Not all shampoo and soap fit me. Some soap makes my skin dry, and I do need to choose some different fragrances. Not everyone same like u who can fit all type of shampoo or soap.

Everyone is saying 0.30USD per oz of dishwashing liquid is expensive. But if you can afford an iPhone I’m sure you can stand to spend more than 7USD on shampoo. And if you can’t afford it, no one is forcing you. Everyone should just do their best for the planet.

The difference is that electronic products are one time purchase while shampoo you need to change half a month or so (depend ing in your hair type etc.) so in the long run, yeah it is quite expensive because its a one use product sp you have to buy it more often
Anđela I can see your point. But that’s also why I say if you truly are living paycheck to paycheck then you don’t have to buy these products. My statement is more aimed at people who absolutely CAN afford these products but choose to splurge in other places and then turn around and call a $7 bottle of shampoo expensive. I’m not saying you have to buy it, but saying it’s expensive when you absolutely could afford it comes off wrong you know? It’s like if Jeff Bezos didn’t want to pay his workers more because it would be too “expensive.”

Roxana Lisbel, I literally live in highland park, it is mainly income from what I see. Metro and dash are still very abundant around, every few blocks there’s a bus station.
I won’t say LA is nessisarity polished, and boogie. LA is huge, with millions of people, and from sections to section is can very from income, to community etc etc. These things need to be taken into aspect.
Im lucky enough to be one of the customers of this awesome business! I'm seeing a lot of comments about how expensive sustainable goods are and while this can be SO true, this store does an awesome job of providing affordable options. I buy my dish soap, laundry detergent, reusable containers, body oil and essential oils here. Not only are they not more expensive then when I have purchased these items prepackaged, they are often less expensive (and I don't buy expensive versions of any of those things). When sustainable goods are more expensive, it isn't necessarily because someone greedy is marking them up, it is because they are inherently more expensive to manufacture. That is why so many products are full of chemicals -- they are cheaper to produce even though they do harm to humans and the environment (meaning the long term costs are much greater). Yes, this store doesn't offer an abundance of options but it's important to note they are REALLY small. Their farmers market stalls are small, their store is small. This is a family owned business, they don't have a big staff. Retail space in LA is massively expensive, and it can be expensive to operate a stall at a farmer's market. Plus, there isn't much of a profit margin on any of the goods they sell. It isn't really feasible for them to carry a huge variety, and this is the case for many reuse stores. The more we support small businesses like this, the more they will be able to expand and offer more variety. And through the economics of scale, the more people buy sustainable goods, the more the prices of those products will go down as well. Instead of pointing out everything wrong with something like this, why not focus on what is AWESOME about it and what can be learned from it?

I went back to hard soap wrapped in paper for hair, body, dish soap - which i also use on floors, glass and use for clothes. Hard soap is easy to find and doesn't require a specialist store

I have long, straight hair and bar soap makes my hair gummy. Every brand I've tried. And my facial skin care, I won't use bar soap on that. Too drying and harsh. I use bar soap for body, though.

J K Yeah I dyed my hair brown over my already bleached hair so if I were to use bar soap on my hair It would probably get gummy as well
Please do this in Australia, mostly Sydney and Melbourne, stores here use a lot of plastic and are a bit expensive, it would be great for an environmentally, cheap alternative in Australia. I hope to see stores like this pop around the world.

Governments should provide incentives to business like this and all related business, then more people/business will follow. As consumers, we could start small and progress forward. As the demand grows, the supply will grow too, which will drive competition and lower costs/prices for all.
I wish all stores had refill stations like that.

With some of these products I’m concerned about contamination. I love zero waste stores and stores that allow me to buy in bulk sizes I need but I also find that there are too many people with unsanitary habits.

Nice ideas, how do you degerm the incoming container from contaminating your products pump, therefore keeping from spreading bacteria and viruses on to the next customer? In the days of Coronavirus and Many more. I would say be diligent about keeping safe. HUGS and blessings for ALL
I just wonder how sanitary this is? Like the one with scoop. I’m just thinking of all those germs 🦠. They need to be wearing gloves when they refill and put in some type of sanitation station so people can sanitize their containers and hands before refilling. All I was thinking of was a sick person going in and putting their germs all over the containers. And all those hand pumps... I thought of that and I’m not even a germaphobe. Probably watching to many coronavirus videos. But I’ve never been to the store so maybe they have addressed all of that.
Okay, you get that they're selling soap right? And soap kills the Corona virus...
Lots of different pathogens can live on and in your soap containers. Considering these are green products, they also may not include a strong enough or suitable preservative system for a product which would be decanted into a container that may not be sterilized. The risk is very real.

Alicia Johnson yes it has to be re considered in the age of covid -this was pre-covid. Loop is an online store that will sanitize and pick up and drop off reuse containers-I see that model as more safe.

If you can’t spend more than 1USD per oz on shampoo but can afford an iPhone, that’s just being cheap. And if you’re legitimately poor, no one is making you buy more sustainable products. Just do what you can. Also the reason so many things are cheap is because corners were cut along the way. Underpaid workers and unsafe working conditions, animal testing, I could go on. That’s the price we pay to get things cheap.

Their products are way too expensive for what they are $0.30 an ounce for dish soap 60 cents an ounce for shampoo is almost double your average shampoo get something that actually cleans your hair

All they need was big store to sell soap in gallon. $4/500ml, this organic store is way too expensive for the same amount.

Well I’m from the Middle East and I can guarantee that the WHOLE of Asia have ‘refill stations’. The places that are affected mostly are the ones that get zero recognition and this proves it
