I am a high school English teacher, and from my perspective, Tyler is nothing short of one of the greatest poets of his generation. I love the music, too, but if you strip the songs down to only the lyrics, they’re pure, honest, raw poetry. Loving the new album!
I'm not an English teacher, I'm not even English but I feel the same way...Tyler has the talent to convey such deep but common emotions and feelings in a way that is so simple and yet honest and raw, as you said, that makes it truly poetic, like a punch to the stomach!

Thank you! I’m a math teacher but agree 100%! And would love for the English teachers to use his songs and lyrics to teach. Esp. Songs like Migraine, Addict with a Pen, Ode to Sleep, and many others. They could possibly have way more of an impact than say Shakespeare! Tyler’s an absolute lyrical genius!

I think this song is about an unstable dynamic between someone who is warm and emphatetic and their cold and distant partner/crush. The first one is trying to hold on to the second one and keep the relationship going in every possible way, despite the cold they receive in exchange (they are trying to "scrape the frosted windshield"), and they are so keen to save the relationship (even though the partner makes them feel sad and second guessing) that their hope magnifies any "gap in the ice" (which in reality is very little, as their chances to stay together).
Having personally lived through this situation, I have to say that I've absolutely been hit by this song, and I love the melody too

to me midwest indigo is like trying to be feel OKAY by making an effort to be close to friends/family, but the dismay that they don't get what we're feeling. sure, they care about us and love us, and they're THERE for us, but only to help practically or to fix our problems mechanically. emotionally, it feels like they're so far away (You say that you are close, is close the closest star? / You just feel twice as far, you just feel twice as far)

It is easy to worry that everything here moves slow, leaving a feeling of haste: that we have to move quick if the town doesn't.
Sometimes people grow up with a love-hate relationship with their home town, and personally as time goes on: I really crave to get to know my hometown and love it more.
Sometimes the periods of time here are cold figuratively and literally, and sometimes they leave me in awe and help me grow so much.

If you’re from the Midwest this song hits some very specific feelings.
I can’t explain it, but something about this song fills my heart, gets me emotional, and makes me teary (with happiness lol). Especially at 2:35, his “coooOoOoooOoolldddd” hits me hard 😭 From the lyrics to the vocals, this song is so freaking beautiful. They just keep getting better with each album. 🩵💙

Scaled and icy was great! I really enjoyed it at the time and still do. I think the reason people could say it was disappointing is because it was right after trench which was their best album, yet sounds so different than it. It’s really good though. This song definitely sounds like shy away. It’s one of my favorites 🌻💛
