I am a refugee from war torn Laos, came to US, Texas country hick town, caught Joe’s music randomly and his music has defined coming of age for me learning to speak English in the 80s and 90s. He integrated instruments and his haunting vocal that only worldly travelers could appreciate with the Latin percussions, brasses, and arrangements.
I know the Country of Laos, my friend. I saw this Rockpalast live on TV back then. I lived in the GDR, East Germany. Must have been 40 Years ago. Still a fan.
The most underrated songwriter yhe UK has ever produced. Probably the best though in the modern day. His words mean something to everyone and are so true to life and accompanied by the brilliant music he writes.
Why always people say "underrated" about succesful artists? I mean, you and a lot of individuals are listening to him and his music decades after this and other performances and videos, and his recordings are still on stores, and he was playing at Jimmy Fallon's the other day,and you dare to call him underrated? C'mon,be less childish and a little More serious about other person's carreers. Not only #1s and tops mean success... The simple act of you and i enjoy his music, becomes him everything but underrated,i hate that word,i wrote it three times in this post of yours.
@sergioaraya681 of course he's underrated. If he wasn't he'd be a household name among songwriters which he obviously isn't. It's only a few thousand of us that recognise him as being a brilliant song writer, therefore underrated
I remember reading the liner notes of his live album back in maybe 85 talking about how a young lady had burst into tears at the climax of that song. I just did too..amazing.
One of the best.If you love Joe Jackson, this is the song. The performance, the rockpalast was the beginning.Graham Maby ist the one i ever want to groove with. Best Bassplayer to me.
Hearing this song for the fifteen time today... I was in the virtual world of Second Life this morning, when one of the musicians covered this... First time to hear it I am enthralled.... and can't get enough Thank you for placing this choice selection on RUclips I am blessed, today !!
Stepping Out : Great song : heard it from the Japan live: in his own time : one of the best performance and recodings on Earth mid 90 s correct me if I'm wrong
He was so emotional at the end that I wish I might have been there. It gave me chills looking at his face. He had to calm down just to introduce the band. Bravo.
never paid him much mind, I knew he was a good songwriter,I had Body and Soul on vinyl, but it didn't really move me the One time I played it. So, Steppin' Out was really the only thing I could say i was familar with...Until last week, i found "Look Sharp" and "Night and Day" on used CD's ($3 each at the goodwill). Put on Look Sharp when I got home and was immeditely happily surprised by the driving Guitar and Bass of "One More Time" and it only got better from there. I've been playing those records everyday, multiple times and can't get enough.
Reminds me of when I lived in The Hague in the Netherlands from 1981 to 1993. It was a good time. This album was big when I first got there. Still love it - even if I'm only a couple of years younger than Joe Jackson.
Joe has a superb band, Graham on bassgitar is one of the best and the drums are great. People like to play with him. Listening to them is still worth it.
I don't think that Joe Jackson is given nearly enough credit for being one of the greatest composers/singers/songwriters/performers of the late 20th century. FFS he's not even in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame!

I look closely at some performers, and their drinks appear to be alcoholic. I observed Jackson sipping water. Maybe it was something really stiff, but I like to imagine that he is playing and wanted to be at his best. To me, it would be an example for up and coming artists

Love Joe❤since 1986❤ A Real Genius underrated !!! Keep Rocking Legend❤
I remember reading the liner notes of his live album back in maybe 85 talking about how a young lady had burst into tears at the climax of that song. I just did too..amazing.
If you had to listen to 1 song by Joe..it has to be this one. Perfect balance of intensity and beauty..and alot of soul.
I love him.
I can never listen to just one song by Joe.

Wow! He totally owns this performance. It's beautiful, lyrical and moving. What a star.
We just witnessed a man baring his soul, what a performance, what a talent.
Joe Jackson! This man is eternal! Such a brilliant artist... Incredible songwriter & musician, among the top of 20th century.
What a killer vocal performance. Surpasses the album.
You can see how personal and meaningful this song is to Jackson and how much it drains him to perform it. That's the soul of an artist.
That's as near to artistic perfection as you can get! Performance of a legend!
Beautiful songwriting... The chord progression is breathtaking!
Hearing this song for the fifteen time today...

Joe just threw himself into this one! Amazing!
He was so emotional at the end that I wish I might have been there. It gave me chills looking at his face. He had to calm down just to introduce the band. Bravo.
His voice breaks me!!!I love you Joe and have done for 32 years❤...since I was 18.

What an astoundingly good performance.

What an awesome performance.
Superb.
Perfection written and performed by Joe Jackson.
Absolutely great!!

Yes, still good as he was in Portsmouth - nice video, thanks.
So heartfelt and personal it breaks your heart 💔
He had so much to create past this night.
LYRICS Music has charms they say
But in some people's hands
It becomes a savage beast
Can't they control it
Why don't they hold it back
You see my friend and me
Don't have an easy day
And at night we dance not fight
We need the energy
If not the sympathy
But I'm brutalized by bass
And terrorized by treble
I'm open to change my mood but
I always get caught in the middle
And I get tired of DJ's
Why's it always what he plays
I'm gonna push right through
I'm gonna tell him to, tell him to
Play us, play us a slow song
Play us a slow song
Play us a slow song
Play us a slow song
It's late, I'm winding down
Am I the only one
To want a strong and silent sound
To pick me up and undress me
Lay me down and caress me
I feel you touch my hand
And whisper in my ear
Ask me how I'm feeling now
And I want to get near you
But I can't even hear you
But this is a fine romance
If we have to be so demanding
We need just one more dance to
Leave here with an understanding
And I get tired of DJ's
Why's it always what he plays
I'm gonna push right through
I'm gonna tell him too, tell him to
Play us, play us a slow song
Play us a slow song
Play us a slow song
Play us a slow song
I get tired of DJ's
Why's it always what he plays
I'm gonna push right through
I'm gonna tell him too, tell him to
Play us, play, play, play
Play us a, play us, play us
Play us a slow song
Play us a slow song
Play us a slow song
Play us a slow song

Great song. Personally, I like the live version with the horn riff in the middle.. it's bad@$$!! But every version is stellar.
That is sincerity folks
The key changes are unlike anything else.
