A really wonderful, beautiful piece of music that lit up my life in the early 80's. My children were young, I was optimistic, and my work life was new. It was a great time to be alive.
Anybody else feel just a little bit sad about how young and hip you were when this was getting regular airplay on MTV and how the world seems to have changed so much since then? This song takes me back to my teenage years. Thanks, Joe Jackson!
What a deep question. I gotta say YES, NO, and every emotion in between. The thing I keep thinking about is how horrified my parents were when I got my first KISS album in 1975.....they were big band era music lovers (I'm a jazz lover to this day) and I'm sure they felt EXACTLY the way I sometimes feel looking at the music of today - that everything has changed for the worse..... In an odd way, though, that thought gives me hope. Know what I mean? PS I also grew up in NJ :-)

I was in a bar in the Upper East Side New York called « Elaine’s », must have been 1982-83. This guy just walks in, alone, and starts playing on the piano, including this one in a very cool, slowed down version. So I say to my buddy: « This guy’s pretty good ». My friend looked at me dumbfounded « Man, that’s freaking Joe Jackson ». I’d never heard of him. Been a fan ever since.
Elaine's boasted many celebs, but you had to be cool & not hassle them. Alan King & Mort Sahl were at a nearby tables. The editor of the Paris Review, George Plimpton, was at the next urinal in the men's room. When I brought a Dutch woman there, Sean Connery was at the bar. Woody Allen's movie "Celebrity" has a scene there that featured many who could be found there.

I was at this gig. He said something that will stay with me forever. He said “40 years ago, who’d have thought I’d still be able to fill the Palladium. Thank you”. Still a very humble man.
I remember being 3 years old when this song came out. The music was on the radio non stop in my parents house that we would dance to. Joe Jackson didn't get a lot of credit for his talents. I was not at all surprised but very happy when it appeared on GTA Vice City soundtrack. This defined the 80's
I've played to that game for years and I never realized that song was in the game. I've searched this song for years. Today I found it...probably I was always listening to Emotion 98.3 instead of Flash FM but I still can't believe it😱
idk man; maybe its late, maybe I'm hyper-sensitive but this video just made me happy almost to the point of tears. I spent all day with the melody stuck in my head and for the life of me could not remember the actual title of the track. I search and search and come across this gem and now I'm sitting at my desk smiling ear to ear and gleefully weeping. So for this moment and for your beautiful gift that made it happen: thank you so much Sir Jackson.
Man, after all these years, he's still got it. That song's still got it. It moves something in my soul, almost brings me back to a simpler, happier time when everyone I love was still alive.
This is one of the most perfect songs. I have no real nostalgic connection to it, but it's just a fantastic vibe. The electric piano chords are such innovative voicings, paired with a driving bass, and the glockenspiel sitting over the top of them. It's just a magical song.
Yeah, you don't just come up with those voicings without a hell of a lot of classical/jazz experience. You hear this kind of thing in background parts played by a lot of studio guys, but never as the front-and-center instrument to rock/pop. Pop stars just don't write this kind of stuff! Only the fringy, heady stuff like JJ, Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, and their ilk. The "anti-punks". Is it prog? Maybe (JJ has obviously dipped his toe into the progrock mode more than once), but more specifically, it's a lot of formal training.
I have loved Joe Jackson since I cannot remember, am 53 now. Being an East Berliner I remember dancing to this in the Franzz Klub in 1986 with my sister. Stuck behind the iron curtain Joe Jackson was one of the freshest and most inspiring rushes of freedom feeling imho. Hell yeah, he still is!
