  • I talk about Rushdie's Satanic Verses.
Hope no one gets offended by this, basically just summarizing it and explaining why it's so controversial. :)
    Note:
Apparently it's still very dangerous to walk around with this book in certain countries like Iran, Iraq, ...
    Question:
-Any experiences with this book? Have you read it?

Everything is offensive to Muslims so it's not surprising they find it offensive. The fact that this girl is not wearing a burka is also offensive.

Actually, "Islam" in Arabic means, quite literally "submission". So I wouldn't say calling the religion in the book "submission" harsh.. Great video!!

I read the novel, but many of the events are so spaced out and padded with overwhelming detail that it's hard to keep track, so it really helped to have the main plot points very briefly summarized like that. Thanks!

I'm glad to hear that it was confusing for you too, I felt a little dumb it took me about 9 months to read the 2/3 of the book but in my case I read it in Spanish and it was not translated properly (sometime it kept the english grammar). I really enjoyed the parts about the "sand city" that was the most understandable for me.
I would love to hear you interpretation of the book, or do anyone wants to talk about it?

The character Salman is based on Mohammad's scribe Abdullah ibn Sa`d Ibn Abi Sarh who wrote his 'revelations' down, he frequently made suggestions on improving their wording. Muhammad often agreed and allowed the changes to be made. Eventually, Sarh left Islam, knowing it could not be from 'God' if a mere scribe were allowed to change God's word. Later, after the conquest of Mecca, Muhammad ordered Sarh's death.

Substituting the name Islam for Submission is not an insult. Islam in Arabic means submission or surrender. I love Mr Rushdie and I admire his ability to whimsically and humorously poke fun at religion. So many unflattering things are written about religions and religious icons and Islam is in no ways immune to that, nor should it be.

One day he was sitting in their assembly near the Ka'bah, and he recited: "By the Star when it sets", (1) till he reached, "Have ye thought upon Al-Uzza and Manat, the third, the other". (2) Satan made him repeat these two phrases: "These idols are high and their intercession is expected".

What I'm trying to put emphasis on is the "Power of Language".
How things can be interpreted in many various ways - how a single change in sentence structure, feature or even letter can change the whole meaning of the intended concept/idea. In a way, this applies to most, if not all religions.
The unreliability of the authenticity of it's contents. filled with inconsistencies due to corruption caused by human error. In that case, why follow any religion?
I do hope I'm sending my point across.

Leonardo daVinci tried to explain ideas to his contemporaries without much to show for it. So did Aristoteles and others who were "far out" with their minds. I KNOW I am not arrogant because I allow for what is unknown to me.
We started with religion. To which you stated with authority a carte blanche statements like: "illusions, hate, intolerance, magicians specializing in the art of desception..." Can you prove any of these? Or are these your opinions without any specifics?

The literal meanings of all the names are also important to note. Jibreel farishta - angel, sladin (a legendary hero), chamcha - a fool (or equivalent), Jahiliya - literally means 'ignorance' - name given to the period before Muhammad (PBUH) brought the religion of Islam to the Arabian Peninsula. There's others too but it's crucial to note these :)

Strange how a "religion" of peace would demand submission instead of asking of it's subjects forgiveness for their sins, the God of peace wouldn't demand anything of his subjects, he would ask them to recognize humbleness before God.

it's not offensive to say that muhammad taught "submission" because that's the actual MEANING of the word islam ... also the novel itself is a work of fiction and not offensive, as it is based on an episode of muhammad's life where he actually told people that Uzza, Manat and alat were recognized mediators and goddesses, and later changed his mind, so the Satanic verses episode actually is historical, as well as the episode where a scribe doubted him after changing some of the verses, and the author was merely calling attention to these events.

    John the Baptize.
"So Peace is on him The day he was born, The day that he dies, And that day he Will be raised To life " S. 19:15 Y. Ali
Matches exactly with:Surah 19:33, Christ Speaking As An Infant:
"So peace is on me The day I was born, The day that I die, And that day I shall be raised up to life (again)." A. Yusuf Ali
The word "again" is not in the Arabic text but is Ali's insertion. Compare M. Ali's translation:
Question: Did John the Baptize die? Yes.
    Q: Did Jesus die? Yes

It's a novel. It was not intended to change the world. The vast majority of novels don't fulfil the requirements that you mention, but the book is as entitled to be on the shelves as Jackie Collins, Dan Brown....
The book got a million times more publicity than it deserved.
It has highlighted religious intolerance and vanities of religion. They are there to be shown up, ridiculed and stood up to. The problem is not with the book, but religious fanatics.

The chap has taken one verse of the Quran and translated it to what he thought. He knew that it would create a reaction and that is what he wanted. What he failed to understand is that the whole Quran has never changed since it was revealed.
Find it odd that he has made a book about it, somewhat odd book at that with some of the things he says in it. Almost like he was having some weird dream and decided to right it down. Either way, he wanted a reaction and he got one.
