    In an emergency, communication is the first thing to break down and with it any plan quickly falls apart to incessant small changes. While having a good portable radio (walkie talkie), repeater station system, and clear system for “radio verbiage” is essential. The shoulder/remote microphone is just as essential. If you can’t hear and you can’t be heard through the microphone everything else is a loss.
    Unfortunately, some public safety workers, and some administrators, neglect this critical piece of the puzzle leaving cops, security guards, EMS, Fire/rescue, and a wide range of other critical occupations without effective communication.
    I’ve spent hundreds of dollars (of my own money) to make sure I can communicate with my co-workers. I’ve learned lessons along the way and am happy to share those lessons with you. Hopefully I can save you some time, money, and frustration.

    Wow, this video has been around a while, and has just been recommended to me.
    I am long since retired, but I still do SAR and EDM.
    About the coiled cord... Nothing to do with being tacticool. It's about having the ability to have the mic reach wherever it needs to, even away from your body, like if a partner or someone else needs to use your radio they don't have time to figure out how to get the radio off your belt and they certainly don't want their face in your chest while trying to broadcast that their radio is out, you are down and they have a suspect at gunpoint.
    I would also never thread the cable through my clothing, especially inside of a vest.
    A suspect gets a hold of that mic and instead of breaking away when he yanks it, he now has a handle to drag you around with, and even if you hit the disconnect, it might not pull through.
    Yeah there are downsides... When running, if it comes unclipped it makes a nice yo-yo bouncing up and down off thr pavement... There is the potential to have it used as a garrote against you... But that works both ways.
    I've never used a mic with an antenna. I can see the advantage in a lot of situations.
    I worked for a major metro department. We literally had repeaters on every corner and even in the subways/concourses, so being in communication was never an issue.
    But county? Yeah I could see that totally.

    There was one time in my area that all you heard on the radio for a good several minutes was the following:
    *SNOOOOOOOOORE*
    ............
    *SNOOOOOOOOORE*
    Short story shorter, a night shift officer had fallen asleep and his mic keyed up.

    Like many have said before, you do such a great service to not only active cops ( I'm always looking for good stuff to try when on duty ) and even to civis that are interested in becoming police or just want to know the stuff we do. I have to say I take away something new from just about every video and pass on to my fellow officers and we are all thankful sir 👍

    A good earpiece is the best thing, you can go in and out of the car seemlessly without worrying about anything never any feedback or missed traffic. I got a hawk lapel mic and it is AWESOME. The earpiece is open so you can still hear out of your ear. It makes working in loud environments MUCH better and is also nice when you are running someone for warrants no having a mic that's fallen off dangling at your feet. For $100 it's hella worth it. When I broke the adaptor they sent me a whole new earpiece.

      Only those with antenna ports, it's part of the whole design, so they are not common and not every radio model supports external antenna port via the accessory port.

  • @markplott4820
    @markplott4820 7 лет назад

    Standard Radio had a solution for Public Safety radios in the 1990's, the Radio could be actually split in two, with the standard battery or a extended battery on the HIP and the Whole radio placed where the MIC would be , effectively making it more portable, there were popular with the CHP at the time. the Radio portion being only slightly more bigger than a Standard shoulder Mic.

    • @nine7295
      @nine7295 3 года назад

      Do you recall the model? Standard radio being from Japan is usually much smaller than American brands, but then their buttons are small as well, not as easy to use with gloves on.

    The antenna with the ball on the tip is the cool on. It's the one my pd issued with the xts radio . It didn't have a clip, it had Velcro on the back and you had the other Velcro sewn on the shoulder of your uniform shirt. The cord was straight. The coil cords suck.

    A great way to fix that clip rotation is getting a key chain. The round key chain gets put around your button or zipper depending on your department uniforms. and clip the mic clip on your key chain it stays in place with out moving around or popping off your uniform.

    I'm a police explorer and recently I went on a ride along recently and one thing that I had trouble with was understanding what people were saying on the radio whether it be dispatchers or other officers in the field. To me it sounds like everyone's mumbling or they just speak to fast idk. I was wondering if this is something that changes as you use the radio more? And also are there ways to train for this so that it becomes easier or is there some piece of equipment like a earpiece that makes it easier? Thanks!! (P.S. your vids are freaking sweet and I'm learning a lot of little things from them, keep it up!!!!)

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  8 лет назад +2

      +Sam Nilsson Radio chatter is kind of like learning a new language or more accurately, a new dialect. The key to learning it quickly is emersion. At first you'll only pick out bits and pieces. Most guys though start to understand fairly well what is going on within a few days of being on the air. In weeks it becomes easy for them and within a year they don't even think about it anymore. After awhile folks can monitor several channels at once and pick out the traffic that is important for them while having a conversation over coffee. Like most things in LE there really isn't a gear based solution, just practice.
      Thanks for watching, good luck on your journey.

Unfortunately the shoulder mics on my agency's Motorola mt1250s seem to last about a week and a half before they start having problems; as a result I rarely use one and just use the radio without it. It's called a 2 pin Motorola connector. Public safety mics are not available for those radios.

  • @namebrand227
    @namebrand227 7 лет назад

    Since I don't wear a uniform, I found the curly mic cords are usually too strong for my 6'3" body and end up pulling my shirt around. The public safety mic cables are straight to facilitate the coaxial cable to feed the antenna. The radio I use (XPR7550) doesn't have antenna connections in the speaker-mic port, so I'm usually stuck with either the curly cord or I now use Plantronics cell-phone ear-pieces with the radio directly.

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  7 лет назад

      +namebrand227 I haven't tried the wireless ear pieces and mics. I always worry about the battery dying and leaving me without a radio when I need it. What have your experiences been with them?

    • @namebrand227
      @namebrand227 7 лет назад

      I use Plantronics Voyager ($60) which uses a non-standard power connector. By using their battery case ($22) I get a standard micro-USB charge input, and the ability to keep an ear piece charged and in my pocket at all times. So I use two ear-pieces and a battery case so I just swap out throughout my day as needed.
      Most of my use is working events for several days of 12~16h shifts, or casual off-duty. The ear-piece treats the radio like it's on a call, so I get 6~7 hours usage out of a single charge, hence swapping through the day. Then I just plug the battery case in every night and start the day fresh.
      Other users report my audio as crystal clear, and I'm getting the audio performance of a good cell-phone noise-canceling microphone. In my role it also gives me a more low profile look as the radio is slightly off-set from the center of my back. Since there is no PTT on a cell-phone ear-piece, I still use the PTT on the radio.
      Motorola does sell a proper bluetooth undercover kit, for double the price of what I use, it's very slick but over-kill for my purposes.

    • @nine7295
      @nine7295 3 года назад

      Motorola's Bluetooth ear piece kit for XPR series is expensive and awkward to wear. Bluetooth PTT is available but I have not found any after market ones that is compatible with this radio.

    • @nine7295
      @nine7295 3 года назад

      I have owned 2 Voyager models. They are excellent but they aren't tactical ready as they aren't that secured around the ear. You can easily drop it if you move around a lot. Not recommended for LE etc.

And if thats too short to get to your shoulder, or chest around the front. either your extremely overweight, or trying to run it around you 2 times lol

    What do you think of the earpiece and lapel mic that replaces the cord and large mic like the one in the video

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  8 лет назад

      +Red Jeffy I have yet to find one that didn't break on me at a time of Mr Murphy's choosing. While they are great, and use them, for low profile security and close protection details they have been more trouble than they are worth for me on patrol.
      What I have noticed all too often is guys using earpieces to cover up for poor radio handling. I myself was guilty of this when I was new. It is a dangerous thing for all involved to start using hardware solutions for software problems.

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  8 лет назад

      +Red Jeffy if you insist on using an earpiece for patrol I highly suggest getting one that plugs in at the head of the microphone so that when (notice I did not say if) it breaks you can unplug it and still have a working radio.
      If you use an earpiece plugged into a threaded Jack at the base of the radio or as a replacement for a shoulder mic you run the risk of having no communication until you get the mic unhooked from the radio, a potentially deadly problem to have.

      The Mic gain should be adjusted and calibrated on the radio using the computer programming software with each new mic paired to it.

  • @pwmoorejr
    @pwmoorejr 7 лет назад

    Just an FYI, if you remove the antennae from the radio, you need to install the rubber plug to protect the fitting. I always recommended that you leave the antennae on as it also give you the ability to disconnect the remote mic and transmit with out doing anything else.

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  7 лет назад

      +Paul Moore ya see, I don't know squat about radios and everyone tells me different things about the antennas.

    • @pwmoorejr
      @pwmoorejr 7 лет назад

      Public safety mics with the antennae on them usually have a pin that disables the antennae on the radio itself. If you remove that antennae and your PSM breaks, you need to reconnect an antennae before you can transmit. If you leave that antennae on, all you need to do is disconnect the remote mic.

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  7 лет назад

      +Paul Moore see, I've heard the opposite, that leaving the antenna on the radio itself shorts something out.

    • @pwmoorejr

    the straight cord is great for putting under the vest and wrapped.... the problem however is it doesn't really come in long lengths and it's hard for taller officers to do that.
    I personally don't like having the mic on my shoulder and prefer it center chest/under chin. it's almost impossible with the older Motorola public safety mic. The newer Motorola XTS3000 comes with a newer version of the public safety mic (looks like your noise canceling one, but has all the features and function of the older PS mic).

They're supposed to be the next steps up from the public safety options, but there isn't a lot of material online for them, other than what Motorola has published. It would be nice to get a professionals opinion on the product with respect to security and law enforcement. Heres a link to one of the products im referring, I think there are a few different units depending on which radio model you use: shop.motorolasolutions.com/product/NMN6272A

      +Yisroel Fried That really depends on what type and how they are used. In some areas auxiliaries are full officers who just don't get paid. In other areas they are essentially ceremonial.

      The rubber just cracks over time and it'll break further along, so it's hard to keep the whole system intact with just that. The cable has to be completely replaced as the strain release rubber is fixed on the ends of the cable.

    I'm 15 about to be 16 and really want to be a cop any tips

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  8 лет назад +1

      1) Start studying for the drug test now. Some day you will have to explain that petty drug arrest, regardless of how drug laws change in the future, departments will always need people who can follow the rules.
      2) When driving your car pretend that there is an infant in the back seat. If you wouldn't do it with an infant in the back seat, don't do it. That'll keep you out of 99.9% of trouble most people get into.
      3) Make lots of friends, rich friends, poor friends, male friends, female friends, old friends, young friends, straight friends, gay friends, black friends, white friends, Hispanic friends. If there is a culture in your country you want to understand it. Don't be like me and wait till college or work forces you to interact with a diverse crowd of people. As a cop you have to be able to talk with ANYONE and convince them to do things they probably don't want to do. You need to have the gift of gab.
      4) Get a decent, age appropriate, job and keep it. Don't overdo it. Work, at your age, should be in addition to school, not as a replacement. But, be a good employee and keep the same job for several years. After high school, and if your school schedule allows it, move towards a job that has some level of responsibility. EMT, delivery driver, Asst. Manager, armored car driver, Clerk, whatever, just something to point to that shows you have an employer who can trust you to not self destruct without direct supervision.
      5) In the summer, do volunteer work. Nobody makes better references than the leaders of nonprofits whom you have done countless favors for. Again, don't over extend yourself.
      6) Have a backup plan. LE might turn out to not be for you. This job brings with it stress that few outsiders can fathom. Having the ability to pull the plug an go do something else at least cuts the financial stress to some degree.
      7) Being no good at this job dosent make you a bad person, just a bad cop. If you get a job as a cop some day and you aren't having the time of your life, quit. Nobody who is worth it will hold it against you. (See #6)
      8) If you are going to go to college, and no it isn't 100% necessary, get a degree in something other than a law enforcement related field. Go for accounting, Spanish, teaching, public management, human resources management, whatever. Just make sure there is a job attached to it. Of everything I learned in college the least useful on the job has been the criminal justice classes.
      So, I guess when you break it all down don't get in trouble and come to the job interview with a rich understanding of how the world works from a bunch of DIFFERENT perspectives.

      +free field training how is the police academy physical test?

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  8 лет назад +1

      The physical tests are different in every state. You would have to look up yours to find out what the requirements are where you live. In most cases they arentt anything spectacular, you just have to be in some semblance of good shape. If you are 15 you have plenty of time to start making lifestyle changes with diet and exercise that will help you get through testing and the academy. The key is to stay in good enough shape that it will only take a month or so to adjust to the tests of a particular place.
      As a bonus, it'll help with the fairer sex as well.

    today security officers and Public Safety officers need something better than what is offered, they still wear WIRED mic and headsets and some wear a Body Camera and many officers carry a Smartphone on the job too. now, what IF we could combine ALL of those and more. It may soon be a reality, there are Digital PMR radios that are ANDROID based. they have Bluetooth and WiFi as well as 3G/4G capable and have a Motion Sensor, a HD digital camera Intergrated that can take and upload Stills as well as Video. It may even be possible to Broadcast Digital video Live. Mil-810 STD IP-68 dust proof and waterproof. MAN DOWN button. Voice Recorder. built in GPS. Active noise cancelation with Adaptive Sound. todays Digital Radios are a Fixed Standard but what if the used FPGA processors then the Network can be updated OVER THE AIR and the radio can interoperate with other Agency and across County and State systems.
