Hatch Friskmaster: The Vest for Your Hands

- The Hatch Friskmasters are the gold standard for protection in search gloves, but at what cost? Sometimes all that protection can be a hindrance, that is where preparation and experience come into play.
These gloves saved my hands , and possibly my life, countless times when I was a Delaware Corrections Officer. They would wedge dirty razor blades covered in feces, semen, urine, blood or a mixture of all 4 on the top of the cell door between the frame and wall so it would slice you when doing a cell search. They would also put them under the lip of the toilet seat or cabinet shelves and under their bunk frames as well. These gloves even helped keep blood and tissue off of me( with rubber gloves underneath) once when I had my fingers INSIDE an inmates neck, slowing the arterial bleed he had from slicing his own throat! Repeated use of hand sanitizer did eventually break them down but spending $70 for another pair was well worth it!!! Stay safe, great vid!!
I can trump your Friskmaster experience... in spades! Back in 2006 I was working security at a residential complex. I wore the Friskmaster Max gloves (the top of the Friskmaster line, and one helluva big investment for a starving security guard... especially in Canadian dollars!) as my duty gloves. Answering a noise complaint one night, I wound up in the middle of a nasty domestic between a pair of common-law crackheads. The male party got out of hand and I had to put him on the ground, but as I was reaching for my cuffs, I heard something behind me... I turned back around just in time to have the female party take a wild slash at my face with a 10" carving knife! No time (or space) to retreat in the crowded confines of the small apartment, and I did the only thing I could; I reached up and grabbed the blade as the knife came at me. Caught it less than a foot from my face, the blade right across the palm at the base of my fingers. Stopped the blade cold. Closed my hand and twisted the knife out of the subject's hand. She was so completely shocked by THAT that she just went totally compliant. That blade was razor sharp... it sliced through the leather outer layer of that glove like nothing. But that lining, whatever the hell they call it, performed beautifully. Not a scratch on my hand. Police arrived on scene about 30 seconds after the fact, and both parties went to prison. But, as I told my wife as I headed down to the local police supply store next day to replace my gloves, they were easily the best $75 I had ever spent!
Their made with dyneema
BTW, anybody observing the drawing, it's not to scale.
I have a couple pair, your videos make me feel good about my choice! I love your video series man, always always more to learn. Been in field since 2006, but I still feel like a rookie from time to time.
I have a suggestion for a future video(s), you could tell stories of the wildest things you ever encountered on patrol or something like that!
My wildest stories are not fit to print, but I'll do my best.
Understand. Thank you SIR.
I prefer the Spectra lined gloves better. The Spectra lined gloves have a shorter cuff on them. This helps in winter time with wearing long sleeves and jacket.
+Elliott Coker yeah, spectra is definitely preferable.
I think you would get a lot of views on your biggest fear on the job. For example getting stabbed, hit on a traffic stop, shot of course and maybe even beaten. Thanks a lot for all that you do as a cop and all that you do to share your work.
+g wagner that is a great idea.
I used Shoe polish to clean up my leather gloves. it works amazing to be sure use a old set first and test it.
+The Reboot Program cool
I have these gloves. they are the best things out there. I have had to use them for many different reasons at work. I won't buy any other gloves.
+Hunter Churko
*till something better comes out. Love them too.
What do you think about the friskmasters with honeywell lining
I need a glove that matches dexterity with protection. Any suggestions? Do these gloves provide both of those properties?
These err on the side of protection. They have a full spectra liner. Some gloves offer more dexterity but less protection especially between the fingers. If you can live with that, the gloves from 221b tactical offer slightly less protection but more dexterity. If you want even more dexterity but only palm protection from cuts hatch makes several gloves that can do that for you
I use the 5.11 gloves with padded knuckles or different gloves just like them. These just don't work with really warm climates like I'm in unfortunately
Thanks again for the video's. Make sure your haters are your motivators!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
+Colerain Twp. Ohio. Police Eyes who could hate me? I'm so little and lovable. Like a care bear with a gun.
Great videos. Ever recycle the gloves? Looking for used ones for my bike.
+JEFF RILEY I currently use all.my old equipment for videos and training. Nothing gets the point about what kind of gear is necessary like the stuff that has been through the ringer. Everything else goes to new guys who are without.
Tommy...no shit, the best dental floss is made of Dyneema.
+Doctor House Man, you are really hitting up the moldy oldies on the channel. I still highly recommend these gloves. Just bought myself another pair for Christmas.
Gotta protect the hands!
+Doctor House Cheapest insurance policy I've ever bought.
Doctor House
It's also used in fishing line and ultralight outdoor gear.
Needle stick?
I have not seen any needle stick tests with these gloves. Also I found some on amazon for $35.00 called hatch Friskmaster Glove w/Honeywell Spectra. Are they the same
There are not a lot of videos on duty gloves on RUclips
No these one's are made with dyneema
this one was like a movie!
If you ever decide to part with them, would love to buy because they are broken in.
+JEFF RILEY I'll keep that in mind, but you could probably walk into any local PD with $20 and buy some possibly infectious, well broken in, duty gloves off an old timer.
my favorite part was him telling the story!
You should try the mechanix pursuit e5 gloves
I wear very thin Vegaholster Sensitive gloves. I own some big bulky knife resistant gloves, but I never wear them. I need dexterity while doing searches and other work, that's why I carry thin gloves. I do realise that I'm very ill protected by these gloves, but I haven't seen a good protective gloves that also retains optimal dexterity. Also I don't get confronted with junkies on a daily basis.
+Pukkepop oh, man, you just haven't lived until you get stuck be a heroin needle.... Wait, nope. Count your lucky stars you don't have to brother! Be safe out there.
I hope it never happens. It's quite an eerie feeling when you dig bottles of Methadon and other junkie crap out of a suspects pockets. I must have asked the suspect 50 times if he had any needles on him after that. Luckely I don't encounter too many of those kinds of people where I work.
+Pukkepop needles are the worst. My state decriminalized them and people still hide the things.
I'm just a security guard but I wear mechanix fastfit gloves. I get a snug pair then I slip on a pair of nitrile gloves over them and I store my gloves like that. I'm with you on that needed dexterity! But as long as you have some half decent material for your palm and just be mindful of the possibility of knives and needles present, you should be good. I think we all know the feeling when a blade tip or needle catches leather. If you feel that, let go then approach with caution.
+free field training Is this the craziest foot chase you've ever had? Or, is there an even crazier one?
+Zach Carter there was the guy who decided he would jump from one roof to another.... It dosen't work as well in real life as it does in the movies. Lol.at least he didn't die.
Lol, that guy must've been on something. Also, my local pd came to our school and the special investigations division talked about what they do. Do you have any recommendations to be in the unit? Would I need to work patrol a couple of years prior?
+Zach Carter With very few exceptions, everyone has to become good at patrol before they get to do something else. There is no "I just want to be a detective", "I just want to do CSI", or "I just wanna work undercover". Many guys get on the job, find out how much work it takes to get into the specialty they want and just quit. You are talking about years of work and many times that just isn't enough. You have to be GOOD at patrol before anyone will even look at you for another job. If you can't write really good reports there is no investigation or detective job for you. If you can't shoot and make decisions quickly there is no swat for you. If you are going to become a cop do it because you like patrol and aspire to be really good at a specific part of that job that a specialist unit does exclusively.
So, if you want to be part of a special investigation unit you have to be a great street cop, an excellent report writer AND very good on your feet during emergencies.
Ok, thanks
I am not a cop, but I do security at my church. We've found at least one used needle on the premises in the past, along with broken glass, so I've been thinking about a good pair of search gloves. I love your channel, and had a couple questions about these Friskmasters I was hoping you might be able to answer:
1) Am I correct that you use the Dyneema version of these gloves? I see that they are available with Kevlar or Spectra liners as well, and I've been having trouble determining the pros and cons to each type of lining - and which is really the best.
2) Would you say it is viable to use a gun while wearing these? God willing I'll never have to, but I do carry when on security duty.
+William and Rose George the versions are mainly about price and preference. Kevlar is effective enough against cuts, dynema and spectra are better but more expensive. You can use a handgun while using these. You will have to practice it beforehand though. Without practice there will be a severe degradation in your ability to hit anything.
Awesome, thanks for the reply! Love your videos. I have lots of friends who are cops, and it is cool to get to see more about what they deal with - and it helps in my small security role too.
What about turtle skins?
Why would you pay a deductible for a work related injury?
+Nuk Muay / Nuk Soo That's actually a real good point. Lol
Try first tactical gloves. Love em
These are ok gloves. I prefer the Hatch Dura-thin Search Glove over any of their other gloves.
+SirWhiteCrayon Wow, sir white crayon. There is a name I haven't seen in a minute! How have you been brother?
+SirWhiteCrayon I'm guessing that was you with the deleted contact info question. Freefieldtraining@gmail.com it is also listed in the "about" tab on the channel under "for buisness inquiries".
free field training
I've been doing pretty good. I'll shoot you an email.
As for the missing comment, I may have been having Internet issues at the time. I definitely meant post that. lol
+SirWhiteCrayon it's cool, I get notifications of everything. I saw what happened. Lol
Hey, can you please try to make more video's while driving/On-Patrol? I really like them. Like stories.
+2AverageJustins Everyone likes stories. I just have to be careful about what stories I tell because the statute of limitations on civil cases is seven years. I don't want to end up with serious liability issues.
free field training Oh.. Alright. I don't want you to get in trouble. I laughed tho when the dude crashed lmao
+2AverageJustins looking back it was funny. At the time.... Not so much.
free field training I honestly don't know how some people crash hard and just walk away. Or run away
+2AverageJustins Adrenaline. I once saw a guy cross a 200' wide frozen river by wading through up to his chest while punching the ice to break a path after a pursuit. Adrenaline is a hell of a drug.
How did your partner get over the fence? What gloves did he have on?
You, know I don't remember. He is significantly taller than me though.
free field training ohh okay then he probably got over it without needing his hands as much.
For him it was probably more of a "hop" than a ladder climb. I'm only 5'02"
free field training yup, definitely must've been that. And wow really, you seem much taller in your videos.
It is all fancy camera angles and editing I can assure you.
When we could still use sap gloves we just cut the trigger finger off so you could still use your weapon.
+lisar3006 I did the same thing with hard knuckle gloves, but for cut gloves it is a bit counterproductive. These things give great protection. Of all the areas I don't want cut or stuck my trigger finger is pretty close to the top.
These are ok gloves. However, I prefer the Hatch Dura-thin Search Glove over any of their other gloves.
FYI, I want to get in touch with you via email. I'd like to offer some hospital security info for future vids. Let me know how. Thanks and be safe!
It's a Tommy Ross drawing video
ok going through alsip by swap-o-rama
+barry marovitz I should have stopped by swap_o_rama I could have picked up more hidden weapons for videos!
oh ya i used to love the swap would make a day of it
+barry marovitz you're not the only one!
I like nomex
Nomex is not a cut proof material. It is heat resistant.
5:23, Alsip water tower? lol
Do you really pay a deductible and lose pay for a LINE OF DUTY injury?! That’s fucked! Getting hurt doing your job (absent contributory negligence or disregard of policy) shouldn’t cost you a dime if you work on a loading dock, let alone as a cop.
