Young Martin’s Reels was created to honor my dad Martin B. Stivers of Louisville KY. He was an avid fisherman and repaired thousands of fishing reels in his lifetime. I spent numerous hours watching him do so, but I have forgotten most of what he taught me. Now that he is gone, and I find myself in need of reel repair, so I am learning how it is done and trying my best to pass it on.
If I can be of assistance, feel free to contact me Rick48cj2a@yahoo.com
I would also like to thank Dennis Kuntz of 2nd Chance Tackle. His videos have helped to fill in the gaps in my “reel” knowledge. Without his RUclips videos I’m afraid Young Martin’s Reels would not exist.

This video saved my reel from my childhood. I have a Shimano Fx200 from the mid 80s. I completely disassembled, degreased and re-lubed the entire reel. When it came to reinstalling the drag stack; problems were encountered even with having the schematic. The clear and direct instruction in this video helped me reassemble the drag correctly. Top notch video for sure.

This is the one you told me about. I wish I could come as we don’t have anything like this where I live. I’ve watched videos of other shows like this and they are fantastic. Great tutorial for working on a rea drag stack. Hope your young friend continues to learn about spinning reels! - Chris. PS. I like both of these Shimano rear drags.

Very good and super informative on what I’ve been looking for, one question if I may? Can you change the felt washers for carbon, if so do they offer the same improvements. Many thanks 👍

If you can find the correct size carbon drag washers you can certainly change them. I bought a sheet of 1mm carbon fiber material that I’m planning to use to try making my own drag washers. So far I haven’t found a reel with drag washers damaged enough to warrant the effort. I’m usually pretty happy with felt and leather drag washers. There are some folks out there that claim to feel the difference; I’m getting old and I don’t have the feeling in my hands I once did so I can’t tell the difference.

Ive got many of the rear drag shimanos from this era. Ive always liked them. Thanks for posting.
    - (Im guessing the rear drag stack works the same for all of them? Ive got 5 of the 1000/2000/4000 symetre rh versions. They are my favorites.
