Completed this upgrade this afternoon. Everything went perfectly (watched the Vanford upgrade so I didn’t have to mess with the anti reverse). Your video made it easy. It only took me about 25 minutes. Thank you for posting this!
That’s awesome man! Glad everything went smooth and man working around the AR is perfect!!! Thank you for the praise brother! Share it with your friends!
@@zeadon yes I felt a difference. It was slight but smoother. What I am hoping to see is that the reel remains smooth over time. However only time will tell. So far it runs perfectly but it is less than one season at this point.
Hi mate! I already do the upgrade on my 3k from your first video on the FL. I will buy a 5k and follow this video, (except the spool bearing size if I well understand) thanks for the content! Big shootout from France✌️
Awesome! And sounds good man! Just parts reference the bushing between the 3000 and the 5000 because I do not know if the 5000 parts are the same as these ones
Theres difference in the sound because of how slow you’re turning the knob of the upgraded reel. But if you turn the handle at similar rate there will be no difference at all. Great tear down though
I definitely heard the difference myself between the grinding plastic bushings and smooth rolling bearings, in reality theres zero to none noise compared to plastic bushings, you will hear that. If you say nah, so be it.

Awesome thank you!! And nope! It is no longer needed with the upgrade! And you’re welcome man! And hah do not worry... I have another upgrading video coming in the works!
@@WestCoastFloridaFishing thank you for confirming. i was wondering about that also. did you end up putting a spacer in between the bushing and bearing? or was that not needed?
Fantastic tutorial mate. Am i right in saying that the bushes with o-rings as originally fitted provide a measure of protection against salt water ingress that the bearings do not provide? Cheers
Hi, I’m upgrading a 5000XGL. Do you know what is the right ball bearing replacement for the part RD20272 (Main Shaft Collar)? The RD14396 you used in this video is a 4x8x3. For the 5000 the main shaft is a 4.5 so in theory I need a 4.5x10x3 but it doesn’t exist. Thanks
Went through my new Stradic 2500HGFL with the upgrades here. Thanks for the awesome content. I hit about 150-200 outings a year for inland trout fishing. WI trout and salmon run from tiny dinkers to 20+#ers. Had been on a Penn Battle III that I like (except when the antireverse fudges up). So far the 110$ Penn has been durable, but don't get a molecule grease on the anti-reverse clutch! haha. Very easy smooth upgrade, liking the Stradic so far this year! Hoping the Stradic will last more than a cpl seasons!! Happy fishing!!!
Thanks for commenting! How awesome is that! I appreciate the feedback! Yeah they are great reels! There might be something I might replace it with but a future video in that soon!
@@WestCoastFloridaFishing About a hundred outings in and the Stradic is still great. Best reel I have had yet. The upgrades are flawless. Kinda interested for inspection and service after peak season is over in October. Taking it to Canada late Aug for 2fter Nipigon brookies. Wooohaaaa. Will be interested to see your next reel pic and any mods.
Impressive man, steady hands like a heart surgeon 😂. I been taking apart older sustain FE’s and saragosa F’s, with all these upgrades in bearings you’re bound to buy a wrong part number here or there Lol
I finished the conversion, at least partially. The oscillating paw bushing remained unchanged because I didn't have the Stella oscillating slider bushing. I could not move the screw in the handle--Any suggestions? Otherwise it went easy and uneventful as I wished. It's going to be 27 F tonight so when It warms up, I'll go for Rainbows and see how it works. I really didn't appreciate a great deal of difference before and after because the C3000HG is so smooth and quiet as is. The Stradic can be had for $150+ if you go overseas....what a great deal. I found the Slider bushings and will change that when they arrive. All the info is on this page...I should have looked first. Great Experience.
Great and really informative video, enjoyed every minute of it! Btw, on the sound comparison I noticed the upgraded reel has a clicking sound when spool goes up, do you know what's causing it? I have the same clicking sound on mine new out of box, I've read somewhere it could be related to oscilating pawl.
I'm upgrading a Stradic 5000FL, I have all the bearings now, but don't have the oscillating slider bushing (part # RD16471). Is the bushing for the 3000 and the 5000 the same part #? I see you said I will also need a shim (part # RD2298) which is only available via hpr on ebay. Shimano parts dept has the RD16471 in stock as of now. You didn't say why you need the shim and where it goes though? Still questioning if it is really worth it to upgrade the pawl bushing considering the loss of the rubber seal and cost and difficulty of obtaining the additional slider bushing and shim. I have that bearing already so I'm unsure whether to just toss it or order the bushing/shim to go all the way with it?
@@CannonCountry Plaig bearings in Australia makes complete Stradic upgrade kits. You can either replace all the bushings with high speed bearings or replace the bushings plus all the original Shimano stock bearings (your choice of stainless or ceramic as well). They even have roller bearings if needed. The one down side is they don't include the needed oscillating slider bushing to be able to properly install the pawl bearing. You can either leave it out all together, or order the slider bushings and possibly shims too, still contemplating myself. When I did an FJ years ago, I sanded down the original bushing til it fit snug with the bearing. This might work again, I remember it was a pain in the ass to do. Shipping wasn't bad at all as I ordered like 5 kits and 5 roller bearings. I'm doing all my FL's and a couple more for my fishing buddy. The shipping price gets cheaper if you order more, took like 2 weeks to arrive from down under. I think I paid about $25 USD per kit plus shipping. No need to look up numbers or use a caliper!
@@lococrisp2899 that's awesome! I've been think about upgrading parts on my vanford and my stradic. It's great to hear it's such a simple thing to order. I've also been thinking about splurging and upgrading to a Daiwa Exist and a certate. Which is what I chose to do. I have a Exist in 3000 coming from DigiTaka on order and a Certate 4000. I am not sure if I will go ahead and upgrade the vanford 3000 and the stradic 4000. But I might do it anyways and have some great back ups. Or just set them up entirely different. I've been thinking about making the stradic a designated catfish reel.
Is the upper worm bearing and oscillator paw bearing worth tearing through the entire anti reverse system?? And did you forget to replace the o-ring on the oscillator paw bushing?
To me it is as that’s the main oscillation system and you can bypass the anti-reverse completely. Check out the new Ultegra upgrade or the Vanford upgrade to see how!!
I just did this upgrade and it did made the reel smoother but not by much that it didnt even came close to the level of smoothness the Daiwa Certate LT has. Tho at least once you upgrade your Stradic to 10 bearings, buying the high end Twin Power becomes pointless. Not unless you really want to spend the extra dollars
Great video! Do you or others do these upgrades for people and if so what would this exact upgrade cost besides shipping? After watching I am not confident I want to go that deep myself. I also feel like if I am going to upgrade my 1000 FL I may as well do them all. Thoughts? I mainly fish for Smallmouth in the midwest.
Steve Sellers yeah I have upgraded some of my friends reels so that’s something we could do! Email me with your information at westcoastfloridafishing@gmail.com and we can work something out!! And for that size reel some upgrades are not really worth the money.. since you’re not loading out your reel completely I would skip the rotor retaining nut bearing upgrade and the oscillator slider upgrade too. Just my two cents!
Aloha from Hawaii, thank you for posting this article. I would like to upgrade my C5000XG Stradic to a Stella 5000XG. Will I be using the same bearings or not. Could you please tell me what's the bearing part numbers that I will need to do the upgrade. Thank you in all and what you do for the fishing community. Mahalo,
Aloha!! How awesome to have such a distant supporter! The correct bearings for the other size Stradics are in the video description! I am working on fixing the links but follow the MM dimensions to order a replacement bearing of your choice but more on that soon!!
The part equivalents are in the description! Thank you for the comment and support! I am working on fixing the links but use the MM dimensions to order replacement bearings! More on this in an upcoming video soon!
Realized my mind was not working well--the hybrid bearing will still bring the steel roller against the mainshaft and the ceramic rollers aren't any advantage. Doc 1/5
Thanks for sharing. I have a few questions please. 1. Are there any differences between Shimano Stella in US and in Japan? Any bearing spec differences? Are the bearings you suggested also fit for Stella in Japan? 2. The example here is Stradic 3000 but I have a Stradic 6000xg. If I want to DIY the bearings, do I need to pay attention to the bearing size? Thank you for your answer.
Thank you for watching and commenting! There are differences between them but unfortunately I am not familiar enough to speak on the JDM Stradic. All you need to do is measure your bushings and buy the counter part bearing upgrade!
i never discard a broken reel without taking it apart and saving all good berings and drag components , handle knobs, etc. many times i transformed a cheaper reel to its more expensive big brother by just using parts i had.
costa nicolaidis Thank you thank you thank you! It was a very large project from the start but it was an awesome upgrade! I appreciate your support!! And whoa... now that’s a good question... I wonder....
Allright one question bro, why didn't you oil the new bearings? They came already oiled, or just 'dry' the grease i've seen, but not oiling the bearings? Greets
@@WestCoastFloridaFishing thanks buddy! I’ll try first with an old one I have and than try the challenge at another. By the way where I can find any sort of bearings? I would need a 9x17x5 and 9x17x4 for this old one.
Hey man great in depth video. I upgraded my Stradic FL 2500 handle bushing to a bearing but when I removed the bushing, there definitely wasn’t a shim on it. I checked on the actual knob shaft & it wasn’t there. I just put the bearing on without the shim. Just wanted to know is it ok that way?
Upgrade completed minus the oscillating slider since RD16471 was out of stock. One question though.. do the bearings come pre-lubed!? I didn’t hit them with any oil before installing. Thx!

Great video 2 questions do you sell a kit I bought a new stella 4000fj and it has more play in the handle and main shaft up and down movement do you have a video to tighten it up
That first nut came off counter clockwise, that should be mentioned because of the brass nut being so soft. Other than that I’m lost! I wish I had your paitients.
Enjoying your videos and now that I’m retired and trying to do some of my own reel maintenance. Couple of quick ?s, I saw that you made a point to remove an O ring from the bushing in the oscillation paw. When you put the new bearing and bushing in the paw I did not see you place the O ring onto the new part????? Also, can the bearings in the body like the osc paw be replaced without removing the anti-reverse? Do all of these bearings from video work on my Stradic c3000HG? Thanks
Since it is between two bearings I felt it would have defeated the purpose of doing the bearing swap upgrade and didn’t put the o ring back on and had only realized after the fact that it wouldn’t work. Thanks for asking and supporting the channel! Have a few videos in the works!
what the size of the brass bushing ? whats the part no. for stradic 1000 hgfl do you have complete details of shimano stradic 1000 hg fl bearing parts no. ?
What is cost of this upgrade? How much you have payd for this ball bearings and where you buy them? From Shimano local servis? Those bearings are from Stella?
Hi, great video, I have the 5000 FL. will all the bearing sizes listed work for the 5000 FL, other than the spool support bearing which you listed for the 5K FL.
I followed your video to the best of my ability. I got everything changed out but doesn't feel right. I live in Tampa, how much would you charge me to take a look at my Stradic FL 5000XG? Thanks.
Do you know if this upgrade or any part of it would apply to a spheros sw 4000? I have seen a video that showed some parts were interchangable. Really appreciate your video..
Thank you for the step by step upgrades! Love your vids but couldn’t help to realize that when you do a comparison of the upgraded to stock reels, the upgraded doesn’t spin as much. Is there an explanation why? Perhaps the grease that’s applied to the bearings should be an oil?
This could absolutely be a factor. I fish 80% saltwater and I would prefer my bearings coated in grease rather than oil so I don’t have to replace them as often. The amount at which the reel spins never actually effects the true use of the reel and therefore is insignificant. Thanks for the comment!
The anti reverse in shimano is quite easy to assemble and disassemble and it can be quite fun if you dont have any sight problem since the parts is very small. I see what you did there, by replacing the worm gear bushing with bearing will give you the shimano's "infinity drive" technology, what a fancy name shimano came up for a couple of bearings.
You got it brother! It’s all marketing gargin when it comes to these fancy names! And yeah once you get it back together and don’t lose any parts it’s not as bad but this anti reverse is difficult to keep assembled as they have to plate holding in the little balls for the one way bearings! Thanks for the comment!
Thanx a lot for your video. I would really like to upgrade my Stradic, too. Are the bearings (part numbers) gonna be the same for Stradic C 5000 XG. I really don' t want to mess this up !!!
I used SS bearings as ceramic bearings are loud and that’s one thing I like to avoid in my fishing reels. Even if that means I will have to replace them at a later date. Thanks for the comment!
Hi there, may I know if the parts for upgrade will be different if I chose to get the Stradic FL HG instead of XG or will it be the same parts? Sorry newbie here
Help my black drag click ratchet won't stay stationary to provide the clicks for my drag. Why won't it stay put. It spins freely on the shaft which doesn't make sense.
The clip holding the clicker washer(black clicker ratchet thingy) is not properly lined up in the groove and is letting the washer spin. No resistance=no clicker. Good luckB
The conversion is finally done-had to wait for the Shimano slider bushing- and went well. Since I'm waiting for a Vanford C3000XGF I will do that when it arrives. The cost was about $65 with the Shimano Slider bushing with tax and shipping. That doesn't seem expensive to have a 12+1 bearing Stradic (Stella like) reel which was great before the extra bushings. I measured the bearing sizes and these are considered miniature steel bearings. They are also very common in 1000-2000 size reels of many brands, some chinese and very cheap. If you go overseas you can buy the 5-6 different bearings sizes in lots of 10 for about $15 total, about $2 per reel. The bushings cost about $4 each plus shipping and are out of stock. I was told by Erelacements that Shimano will have them back in stock at the end of the month. When I looked at the video, the Japanese Shimano bearings had the sizes on the envelope while the Cambodian and Vietnamese bearings did not. Having spent much time in each country about 50 years ago, and they weren't making bearings, I can understand why. Get calipers and measure the bearings yourself. I got 7x11x3, 2x5x2.5, 3x6x2.5, 4x8x4, and 4x7x2.5( 4x7x3 would be better but I can't find that size.) Also, look at the Vanford C3000XGF) upgrade and it will save you a lot of time. I did and I did. Thank you to WCFF for a GREAT experience. And thank you from this dirty dogface pony soldier. Doc 1/5 Cav
Awesome man!! So glad you were able to convert it well and were able to measure all of the bearings for us! Thanks for the praise and I will see you in the next upgrading video! Tight lines! -Isaac
@@alchemistlee5882 Not significantly but slightly. If you pay $10/ bearing save your money. If you buy at Mainsinc-Hobby or go overseas and not Ebay nor official Shimano parts, it is worth it. In fact the line roller has one bearing and 2 plastic sleeves and collars that can be replaced with another bearing to give 13+1. The stradic initially had a very expensive 2-BB line roller cartridge which went bad easily in salt water. You should not do the line roller if this is for Salt water use. None of the additional bearings will change the start up inertia of the rotor. I did the Vanford and there was even less significant improvement. For the Stradic and Vanford I now have 2 13+1 bearing reels
@@quanloikid1 thank you very much for the input. Out of the box, stradic FL and Vanford , which is smoother? Which one do you prefer without upgrade? Thank you.
@@alchemistlee5882 The Vanford is smoother with far less inertia because of the lighter rotor and body. The Stradic is THE REEL. It is a tank and an icon and far more versatile. I have 4 Stradics and 2 Vanfords. Your choice depends on what kind of fish you're after. My first spinning reel was a Horrocks and Ibotson HI-Spin, circa 1956. I like to downrigger fish for 10-20 lb trout/salmon with ultra light gear and 6lb test mono on Lake Ontario. I lose alot of fish
Thank you so much for teaching, I just want to know i have a 19 stradic 2500HGFL, is the parts number is all some you did the stradic 3000? Please let me know, Thanks again.
Hi, quick question: i biught a c5000 xg, and want to change e few ones but not all of them as i do not want to take the body appart. Are the bearings of the c3000 the same as the c5000xg? Many thanks
I can’t exactly remember… I think I have it listed in the video description. It could be possible actually as the 1000-2500-3000 might have had the similar innerds down there.
There wouldn’t be much to do! A few bearings possibly but as other have mentioned, it’s not just the bearings, it’s also the tolerances and components and their quality that make the higher end reels what they are! Thanks for commenting!
I am not sure about that bearing size but if we think logically I’m not sure how much a bearing does help here……… I wonder why that have this here at all?
RD14396 is slightly taller than the bushing...so the thin rubber seal ring will not stay in place..Can you just put in a bunch of grease instead of using that rubber ring ?
I wouldn’t see why grease wouldn’t substitute for a water barrier. But I’m not sure. I’ve heard you can change the rotor reataining nut along with the bushing to help the seating….
@@fakebayram9850 I understand what your are saying, what store do I order it from--the same place I bought the bearings? Am I making my question understandable?

Thank you brother! And I thought I was a bit shakey too!! 😂😂😂 and youre absolutely right. I've done it a few times!
Are these original parts or similar to Stella quality parts from other producers or?…
These bearings are straight from Shimano and were Stella bearings off the schematic!
friend, can I put a 4x8x3 bearing in the rotor nut without using a bushing inside the bearing like on the stella 18?
Awesome man!! Glad it went easy for you!!
Where did you find the parts #s to order the correct bearings?
Are these bearings the same for the vanford?
Yeah pretty much. Check each video’s description for the bearing numbers. Thanks for asking!
Thanks for sharing! Glad you enjoyed the video and gave your thoughts on it!
I am working on fixing the links but follow the MM dimensions to order a replacement bearing of your choice but more on that soon!!
hello friend, could you tell me, what would be the equivalent parts for a stradic fl 4000?, congratulations for the videos, you are a machine
Doc 1/5
Gotcha! At least we know that now!
Bingo! Love when I can accomplish that!
Excellent, excellent excellent. Well done. Double thumbs up. I wonder if the new vanford rotor would fit on the fl????? Penny for your thoughts.
costa nicolaidis Thank you thank you thank you!
Greets
Amazing video but man, I guess it will be better buying a Stella than being able to repeat what you did. Amazing stuff.
Thank you very much! It’s actually not too bad if you lay everything out nice. Try recording it too so you can watch parts if you’re stuck!
Should be alright unless it starts giving you a binding issue. Send it man!!!
Are all the bearings in the description correct for the size 4000 reel also? Thanks
The bearing sizes for the 4000 in the description are as accurate as I have found them to be!
Upgrade completed minus the oscillating slider since RD16471 was out of stock. One question though.. do the bearings come pre-lubed!? I didn’t hit them with any oil before installing. Thx!
I believe they are pre-lubed most of the times yes!
Super job , excellent work .
Awesome! Glad you enjoyed it!
Which stella model did you use for the part numbers? I intend to buy the parts directly from shimano if possible
I purchased off the 3000Fi Stella build I believe… maybe it was the FJ? I can’t remember off the top of my head.

Great video. Are the parts the same fr the C3000 FL
Yes they are!
That first nut came off counter clockwise, that should be mentioned because of the brass nut being so soft. Other than that I’m lost! I wish I had your paitients.
Thanks for the help! My patience can be tested just the same with these types of builds haha!
Hello, great video!
Can you say what dimensions the ball bearings for the Stradic 4000 FL have? Are these identical ???
best regards from Austria
I do not know the direct dimensions of the 4000 Stradic as I haven’t upgraded one before!

What type of material is the Stradic rotor made of? And what kind of material is used for the body?
What is cost of this upgrade? How much you have payd for this ball bearings and where you buy them? From Shimano local servis? Those bearings are from Stella?
You can purchase them from the Shimano website yes!
Hi, great video, I have the 5000 FL. will all the bearing sizes listed work for the 5000 FL, other than the spool support bearing which you listed for the 5K FL.
Mmm just about! I’m not sure which ones will work since I haven’t ever upgraded a 5000 size Stradic!
I followed your video to the best of my ability. I got everything changed out but doesn't feel right. I live in Tampa, how much would you charge me to take a look at my Stradic FL 5000XG? Thanks.
Did you get everything worked out yet?
I am looking to pick up a Reel, would you go with the new/used Stradic and upgrade, Vanford new or used or Penn Reel?

Hi
Very nice video, Will FD, or FJ Spool will fit XG series, i want to have spare spool for XG.
They will not. These have different spool support systems and therefore wouldn’t support the spool correctly.
Thanks for the comment!
you should do a video of putting the anti-reverse back together.. i think it'll be interesting to see it being tear down and put back together
They are a pain in the ass if you have never done it before lol
Yeahhhhh I would confuse more people than help people on that one lol...
Can you give me a Part list for the 4000FL to Upgrade to Stella, please? Thank you doc✌️
Check the video description for the bearing sizes you need for each size. Thanks for asking!!

-Isaac
thank you very much for the input. Did the performance of the reel get SIGNIFICANTLLY better after the upgrade? Thank you.

My guy, my time would rather see me buying the Stella versus this nearly watchmaker alike makeover. No way no how. But good for you!
Will this also apply to the newest stradic 2023 fm?
RD14396 is slightly taller than the bushing...so the thin rubber seal ring will not stay in place..Can you just put in a bunch of grease instead of using that rubber ring ?

@@WestCoastFloridaFishing Thanks a lot. Just finished the upgrade. cant describe the feeling. let me tell you, I went outside and it was breeze and the handle started to turn on its own. Amazing. thanks again for the advise.
@@WestCoastFloridaFishing Nice!
Which model Stella are you referencing for the upgrades?
Usually the Stella FJ. Good question thanks for commenting!
untuk ukuran Shimano stradic 1000 FL apakah sama ukuran bearing pada oscilation
I can’t remember.. I wouldn’t really say that is a necessary upgrade for the 1000 size. The stress load will not benefit as much on the smaller reel size. Less stress=less benefit. But more on that in an upcoming video soon!
still cant find RD16471.. any other link? Great video
I’m unsure of what bearing to provide you with but you can always take calipers to it and get the correct bearing size and swap it! Thanks for the nice comment man!
I need you to fix my reel if possible. The anti drag Exploded
I do not often service reels unfortunately. Thanks for the comment!
