So many of my fishing friends are afraid to open up their reels to do maintenance. That was a good idea to give Michael some hands on experience. It's a great confidence builder!
When I lost my Dad a year and a half ago I didn’t know much of anything about fishing reels. Fortunately I had Dennis at 2nd Chance Tackle to teach me. His videos allowed me to get my hands dirty and start the learning process. Michael is a very smart guy and picks things up quickly. His mechanical skills are currently limited due to not having experienced much in that realm. Since I’ve met him we have pulled tree stumps, split wood, changed a water pump, removed and installed a transmission and now serviced a fishing reel. He’s learning. I think he’s going to make a pretty good fisherman to. He picks up on minor details and uses them to his benefit. I have no doubt he could pick up that reel today and go through it with confidence.

Peter, I use Penn, Cal’s and Super lube greases. For my videos I use the Super Lube because it’s easier to see the parts. For oil I use Penn Reel oil because it seems to work fine and it’s less expensive than others.
Do you have a video on how to actually clean all the parts before re assembly? I notice you skip that part, but it could be valuable information for your viewers.
Mike, a lot of my early videos showed some of the cleaning but it became monotonous for people watching so I dropped it out. I’ll try to include it in some of my upcoming videos of reels that are really dirty.
Most likely cause will be old grease or dirt on the inside of the anti reverse arm. Starting at around the 9 minute point in the video the anti reverse arm becomes visible. I you spray the arm with WD40 and work it back and forth it should free up. Keep spraying and moving the arm until it does. I didn’t remove that part in the video so if you do have to remove it to get it moving, make sure you use you phone to record it from all angles first so you can see how it goes back together. Once you get it moving to the point it springs back into place, at a little drop of oil around the screw head and under the arm. After that it should stay working great for many years.
@@youngmartinsreels5314 I recently just got this reel, like 2 mos ago. It's a 1000 series. After I caught this 2kilo Milkfish the problem happened. It doesn't lock after a half turn. It takes like 3-5 turns back to lock. I'll try spraying wd40. Thank you for replying
I’ve gone to using Super Lube on my gears and Penn Reel oil on my sliding surfaces. I haven’t serviced that particular reel but most Shimano reels are pretty nice.
I almost always use WD40 and a brush to do the primary cleaning. If the reel parts feel gritty after that, due to dirt and micro sand, I will use dishwashing soap and hot water. Then I use compressed air to blow out the water.
@@youngmartinsreels5314 Thank you! My dads old Shimano 3000 needs cleaning. It’s not working very well - but then again it’s more than 28 years old. I hope that cleaning it is enough. The reel has sentimental value to me cause my dad died in 1999.

Unfortunately, not at this time. The correct part number for the FX2000 rear drag knob is RD4098. Nobody is currently listing this knob for sale. The only other option is to purchase a parts reel.
Rick, interesting approach to doing a reel service video. I missed this but what is your relationship to Michael? Is he going to be your protege? I guess I understand now that you said this was Michael’s reel. This is exactly how I taught two of my grandkids how to service your average spinning reel. I’m hoping you’ll receive that package from me sooner than later but with Labor Day it will probably be later. Have you tried to find a schematic for a DQ Automatic 268? I have to admit I rather enjoyed this as it was pretty funny at times. I mean no disparagement on young Michael but going forward I’d prefer seeing and hearing you. Maybe Michael can start his own RUclips channel. I did enjoy watching him fight those monster redfish though! LOL - Chris

I did get two good son-in-laws though as well as 6 grandchildren. Has your daughter and Michael set the date yet? I had the honor of performing both my daughters’ wedding ceremony - one in the church I was serving and the other on Ocean Isle Beach, NC. i have the same reel, and it doesnt make sound when drill is working but drill works. what could be a problem?
My anti reverse doesnt seem to work right away. It takes a few turns before it locks. Have you had that problem?

You know where I can get a drag knob replacement it’s similar to his I have the fx2000

I did a teardown/detail clean/lube of my Pflueger Rocket 1355 last year. Came away with an appreciation of the build quality of that shiny reel.
