My uncommon approach is a game changer for dogs that are constantly afraid, anxious, over-reactive, or extremely excitable. Be sure you’ve listened to Part 1 first so you can identify the triggers that might be contributing to your dog’s fear. I have a neighboro, she is elderly but abusive to her "Standard size full bred Poodle puppy." She carries a big stick and hits it when it annoys her with it's nipping and playing. It's beautiful, about 45 lbs now that it's 7-8 mo old. She has been popping it on the nose (I know you shouldn't do this) since it was a puppy. But recently told me "they were fighting and she punched it"... The elderly lady told me she hired a trainer recently who tried to teach her how to interact with the dog, but the stubborn old woman does it her own way anyway.

These 2 podcast have come at a time when I'm still struggling with my rescue who has been with us 1 year. Journaling has kept me honest and allows me to see the huge amount of progress both dog and I have made. I promised myself this dog would have only reinforcement based experience in my care, but it hasn't been easy as I had no experience with this method. These 2 podcast are helping me reevaluate my efforts and allowing me to jump back in with both feet toward helping my pup regulate her emotions in an appropriate manor! I try to think of the great relationship she and I are building through this process, but deep inside I'm hurt and angry that she grew up in an environment that created her current emotional state! I'm so grateful, and someday my dog will be as well, for the way you in incorporate the different learning styles into your podcast. I learn best when information is presented in multiple ways, i.e.: written, verbal, visual etc. ❤

We have been doing a lot of the things Susan explains in this video since my dog came home at 10 weeks. After enrolling in Home School The Dog, my dog became more anxious. I found that feeding her before walks and training games lessened her anxiety. Then I thought perhaps she needed a complete change in her food. We went from kibble to raw. What a difference a full and happy belly can make. Although she prefers a higher fat diet, it causes her to become too hyper and that's not a good place for an anxious dog to be so I'm keeping her on moderate fat formulas. The change in my dog is so noticeable that the people I see on our walks who we used to have to avoid, come up and ask why she is so different (more confident, eager to meet some people and most other dogs.)

Hello this is a message to my past self when I was listening to all Susan’s free youtube clips and podcasts and was hesitating to join Recallers cause I thought there can’t really be much more content there to be worth the money. Well, there is ❤️ I joined Recallers about a year ago and there is more material and bonus programs than I have even had time to put into practise. Above all, there are amazing online coaches who help with evaluating our videos of playing the games with our own dogs so that we can improve our technique and get better results. My dog’s life has changed (more confidence, more freedom, more joy) thanks to me learning the recallers games and the better connection we now have as a result.

I’ve been struggling a lot with my fearful rescue, particularly because of me. I’ve been holding her back because I hate seeing her shut down. She is so scared of the world, we can barely get out the door without something scaring her. She doesn’t enjoy walks at all. I’ve been trying to counter condition her by the door but I always seem to find an excuse. Oh, the mailman is coming, oh our neighbor is playing fetch with their dog outside, oh there’s kids outside, oh someone just pulled into their driveway 😢. I think I’ve been focusing too much on using treats and as soon as she isn’t interested (90% of the time) I go “oh she’s too stressed, let’s just go home there’s no point in trying “😭 maybe I should switch to toys as a reward instead

I have the same thing only my dog isnt toy motivated as well :')
      So feel you.
Have him for i dont know 3 or 4 months now, hired a professional dog behaviourist really fast cuz i realized real fast i couldnt do this myself (he is absolutely not like his description).
We are starting with trying to get my dog to become more relaxed in our home. But that doesnt seem to work yet :')
Hope it gets better when summer breaks in, the dark of winter is definitely not helping.
Its really hard to stay motivated and to stay hopefull

So true about body language - I was walking my dog off leash and we were throwing a rope toy. I was cold in the wind and -15c and my body was stiff. I had so many layers on I didn’t want to bend down and pick up the toy if my dog didn’t bring it to me. He was dropping it more and more rather than putting it in my hand. It was me…
It was only when I took a deep breath and relaxed a bit that he started being able to bring it to my hand again

Sitting and observing from a distance has been a huge help. And making a list of her Triggers helps me be more aware. But the thing I struggle to know how to deal with is she growls and lunges when a person is walking away from her. This is after she was fine with them, or at least I thought she was. It could be someone close or at a distance.

Love the episode! I’ve got an unrelated question tho, I’m working on fazing out corrections with my dog but she’s got one big problem that I have absolutely no idea how to deal with without using correction. I don’t have a cat but regularly visit my parents who do have cats and every time we visit the second I take my eyes off my dog upstairs she’s in the litter box eating the cat poop. It’s so gross and definitely not good for her but I’m not sure how to deal without yelling (which doesn’t seem to work all that great anyway) help?
