  • In this episode, we take you through the first part of our château shop and garage renovation in 2023 & 2024. Beginning in February, we started clearing out the old garage and next door horse stall. Then we knocked down the brick wall between the two rooms and removed all the bricks with the help of our neighbors, family, and friends. Later we discovered a stone floor under a layer of dirt, which we also had to dig out and remove. After that, we rented a digger, because it was impossible to remove the underlying layers of compressed rocks and dirt by hand. As the months progressed, we prepared the new shop and garage for a concrete floor. This is the first part of the Château Shop & Garage Renovation. Enjoy the show.

    Queen's Escape was inspired by the 4 years the Belgian royal family stayed at Château de La Tuilerie during WWII. In particular, it is for the Queen. The king took shelter at a different location in France. We've named each of our guest rooms after great Queens of the past and present from around the world. Margrethe, Eleanor, Catherine, Himiko, Cleopatra, and soon our bridal suite will be ready in honor of Queen Elizabeth II.
    With it's sprawling green meadows, 100-year-old trees, and historic location in the small medieval town of Gluges, the 200-year-old château is truly an escape. With 5 guest rooms to rent and a stunning Orangery, we look forward to welcoming you for a visit or to host your wedding or event.

    The stones of the stable floor are valuable and very useful. How nice that your sons and daughter have come to help you two. You have created a great space. You do have helpful neighbours. Lucky you. Good job!

      It is being used by a neighbour so not wasted.

      Yeah, that was a bit of a tough one. Ultimately we decided it was there for a purpose and we won’t be having horses, but need the garage workshop space, so we transformed it to our purpose.

    Karen and Bo what wonderful progress on the garage. I’m proud of you for exposing the stone….wow that’s a game changer and provides a beautiful historical feature rather than a complete contemporary feel. It’s a lot of work to expose the original stone (not sure if you will have to point the stone? it looks really good). I love the way the dark wooden beams highlight the lighter stone. Anyway can’t wait for more vlogs on the garage. We can be patient though as I’m sure Bo has to fly a flew planes now and then as the project continues. 😉

      Hi Donna, thank you very much. Yes, you’re right, it was a lot of work and hours spent on this project. Exposing the stones was definitely a lot of work. When you came by, the concrete floor had just made. The next video is in production. The flying keeps me busy too. Bo

    Isn't spraypaint a very expencive way of painting? And bad for the environment

      I can’t speak to that. It is convenient for items that have detail, certainly. Bo will have to express his choices. 😊

    Are you going to use the lime rendering around the stone in garage?

    • @BoSAChristensen
      @BoSAChristensen 6 месяцев назад

      Hi Jeannie, no since it is only a garage I decided not to go too much into detail with certain things. I spent so many hours and days working on this project that Karen thought I was living in there. I also changed my opinion on certain things during the process. First my idea was to expose all limestone in there, but after spending 3 full days knocking off the plaster as shown (half), I decided to stop. Everything you do takes 3-4 times longer than you would think.
      I could still render around the stones later in time, but right now there are so many other things to do.

    Perfect use of an old horse stall area. My husband would have loved that big a workshop. (he had a single garage sized space). He also told me the trick of using a pickaxe or hammer (for instance) is not to have your hands down close to the head. More powerful to have a fuller swing. Interesting the things one learns. Boy you should have one happy neighbour. The cost saved. Win, win with your need to get rid of it. Best wishes.
