- Each of our château guest rooms are named after a great queen. This is the story of Eleanor of Aquitaine, our French Queen. Based on what we learned about Eleanor, we will decorate her room to reflect her heritage and unique personality. We're just in the early stages, but off to a good start. :)

Queen's Escape was inspired by the 4 years the Belgian royal family stayed at Château de La Tuilerie during WWII. In particular, it is for the Queen. The king took shelter at a different location in France. We've named each of our guest rooms after great Queens of the past and present from around the world. Margrethe, Eleanor, Catherine, Himiko, Cleopatra, and soon our bridal suite will be ready in honor of Queen Elizabeth II.
With it's sprawling green meadows, 100-year-old trees, and historic location in the small medieval town of Gluges, the 200-year-old château is truly an escape. With 5 guest rooms to rent and a stunning Orangery, we look forward to welcoming you for a visit or to host your wedding or event.

Eleanor was my 25th Great Grandmother x 3 (three of her children are GGp’s). I've researched her a lot. I love that you will be honoring her with much attention to detail. She loved her children dearly, so a family tree would be awesome. Her years as a prisoner was a very sad and negative point in her life, so bringing that into the design (IMHO) wouldn't be "inviting". The poetry, books on Eleanor, a lute, a huge portrait of her, a framed map of her beloved Aquitaine, all will pay great homage. (Imagine being a guest and able to read about her right there in HER room!!! 🥰)

I would love to see golden hems on the bed curtains or window curtains instead of painting that beautiful flooring. It seems to me that would more closely echo the gold hems of Queen Eleanor's gown! Happy Decorating!

Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine is my 28th Great Grandmother on my maternal side. Many will find descent from her. Researching my Genealogy for health questions lead to my interest in history and château renovation. Knowing that there is a resurgence of interest for our ancestors with a more broad perspective (not just political) on what they created and left to future generations in terms of art, architecture, and traditions has me hoping we are clearing some ancestral karma and learning, not just from text books but by litterally walking in their footsteps, to surpass our ancestor's threshold of problem solving and social evolution. Love what you share in this video and what you are doing with your beautifully important château!

Karen, great vlog! Looking at the famous painting of Eleanor as a young woman…her undergown is probably not the purple tone but more likely rose madder (which was very expensive and rare). That colour edged in gold would be very rich as window curtains and bed curtains, matched with a blue and muted red Persian type carpet and gold candlestick lamps would give you a real sense of history.

If I were staying with you, I’d love a small book in the bedside drawer with Eleanor’s story, just as you told it, that I could read as I went to bed. Then, as the story unfolded I would be glancing around the room and the magic of Eleanor would unfold. Ah! There’s Richard Lionheart, oh! There are the colours she wore.
A circular gold coloured rug at the end of the bed (where the Aztec rug is) could also reprazent Eleanor’s golden foot, only we could also have golden feet whilst standing on it and imagine we were her
What a great idea! I just got a birdcage at the secondhand store the other day. I’m going to paint it gold and hang it in the room to represent Eleanor’s time imprisoned.

Love your rendition of your Queen Eleanor and her history is fascinating. I suggest a large map showing the area of Aquitaine as it was situated in France in her time would be a real plus to help your guests understand where her power began. You could have brochures or pamphlets lying on a table explaining her history; which could also bring in the Bordeaux connection. You could also have, on this table, wine suggestions and a brief history of Bordeaux wine. Loved this video and seeing your family sitting together enjoying a meal brought a smile to my face. Interesting account of Eleanor of Aquitaines life. My suggestion for her nick name would be gold trim at the bottom of the window and bed drapes. Perhaps lamps in the likeness of the rock crystal vase. I will be looking forward to how you will pull this room together. Best of luck from USA and stay well.

Great history lesson! I would think this room would be beautiful in jewel tones. Bed curtains and window treatments in a velvet. A lovely Persian rug. The lighting in crystal. Crystal vases. Heavier furniture and working in some way the royal crest showing the three fleur de lis and the three lions. ❤️😊

Jewel tones would be very heavy and can be suffocating, wiser to use as accents, but love your ideas.
@@queensescape Purple for the French National Flower, the Iris, and deep Rose to Red for roses of England & metallic Gold and deep to pale Blue for Fleur de Lis motifs. Also someone mentioned the heraldic lions standing on two paws with their front paw raised to represent England ...those lions in gold interspersed with gold fleur de lis could alternate in a border motif of some kind either on the curtain borders or on wainscoting or the base boards... 🦁⚜🦁⚜🦁⚜🦁⚜

Absolutely loved this one. I love history. I would trim the curtains and bed linen with gold material in honour of her memory. I would have ten white feathers embroidered into soft furnishings and around the room and ask your guest to spot them all. Your Chateau is splendid.

Your chateau is so beautiful, it even looks beautiful without shutters. I saw the famous Timothy Carrigan left them out of his .you might watch his blog At home in France with Timothy Corrigan at Chateau du Grand- Luce (it's on Quintessence) He also decorated it beautifully. You might watch it to get painting and decorating ideas. Our course he is very wealthy and can afford all kinds of antiques and decor
But I find that by watching these decorators vlogs you can sometimes come away with one or two ideas even if small. Good luck!♥️♥️♥️♥️😘

For the room- creams, greens and gold. Maybe gold trim throughout all the rooms as these are queens! Rich French furniture with texture. Beautiful oversized green velvet drapes and fringes/tassels for curtains. I think it should be more French inspired that English. This room could be incredible!

Loved the history. Thank you. Subtle family tree sounds good. Burgundy walls ( love, Royal colour). Gold base boards sounds good. A booklet of her history? A comfortable couch and chair just because being on holiday, I need a place to relax in peace.
When decorating a room, always start with the rug and that is the wrong rug. You already know that. It's harder to match the rug after you already have the other elements.
I love the image of Eleanor you have shown in this vlog. It would be great to have that enlarged and framed. Maybe choose your colors from that? Eleanor would've have tapestries on the walls and floors to keep warm but I would just go with a richly colored Persian rug. You can find old ones pretty inexpensively if you're lucky, at a brocante perhaps? . I love the large mirror over the fireplace. Gold, I'm imagining.
Eleanor's room would've been decorated with rich colors with elegant silks and cloths of golds. Instead of doing the base boards in gold, I would do the drapes in a solid color (red maybe? and trim them with gold. The wall and trim colors are already good. I might get a larger light fixture when you can.
Her bed would've been enclosed by heavy, rich fabrics as well and would probably have a bed crown or 'tester' and her bed would've been wooden.
Just my thoughts. That's a beautiful, light room and there's nothing wrong with it but you're talking about the only woman in history who was married to two kings of two separate countries, as well as the mother of two kings, and the grandmother of Europe, I would make Eleanor's room very grand. She's worth it.

Wow that is a lot of research into Eleanore. I love the story behind the Queen. It makes it more of an experience than just a night in a beautiful room. You could put your information into something to read before you fell asleep. Gold seal with a stamp to send a handwritten thank you for your guest for staying as a guest in Eleanore’s room.

Art on the walls is the best way to tell Eleanor's story. Family tree of her children is an excellent idea, poetry and manner books are an excellent addition. To bring in music find an image of period correct music with the courts of love written on it in French would be a nice touch.

They used trunks and tapestries in her period. Painted borders around the ceiling.What was her heraldry? You could use crystal and gold candle holders. The larger pillar candles. Cornish hens might be nice food on your menu.

That is a great question. I found more info on Cleopatra, honestly, than Eleanor, in terms of these sort of details. But I’ll keep digging.

Lovely blog and history lesson! As for her bedroom, why don't you start with a beautiful antique rug and find one with rich jewel tones. Use textiles that are rich in color and texture.....linen, velvet, silk, the jewel tones of peacock and emerald green are lovely paired with some rich pinks, preferably dark pinks and some gold thrown in. There are some amazing linen jacquards available for the curtains and bed covers in Europe. The idea of a painted gold wallboard abutting the wood flooring and carry that theme on the curtains with a beautiful gold velvet border on the hem of the curtains. Be bold in the decor.....heaven knows Eleanor was! Cheers!

Hey again 🙂 There are two movies about Eleanor of Aquitaine, Henry and their sons, called : A Lion in Winter. The first was with Katherine Hepburn. The second with Glenn Close. If you have not seen them, you really should 🙂 And maybe it will give you some ideas for the decoration !
I’ve heard about the movies. I heard the stories were a bit fictionalized so I wanted to read the history first. Now I can’t wait to see them! 😊
@@queensescape It is a total fiction. Above all, the two movies are not biopics. Not at all.
All the action is concentrated in a very short time, one night, if I remember well. The action takes place in the château de Chinon, France, between Henry II, his wife and their sons, and deals about the succession of the old king. This story never happened. It is pure fiction. But it is brilliant.
Originally, it was an American play.

You have done such a great job with this video. Thank you. Why not find Indian embroidered curtain material to be used in your Eleanor bedroom? It is for sale in the UK. It will look lovely and not too solid, too overpowering. Embroidery was THE art and skill for ladies at Court. Quite a few rugs on the floor of this room, which feature the colour red. Don't forget that she went on the Crusade, and this means that she would have known about rugs (Turkey), which were mostly draped on tables (!) in Europe at that time. A copy of the family tree and pictures of the whole family on the walls, plus a few secondhand poetry and history books on a table, would complete the 'scene'. What what fun to do all this. I wish you well. Thank you so much for taking us on your journey!

Loved every bit of your story telling. The floors in that room are a beautiful golden colour. Please do not paint them but put a ģolden hem on curtains. In Australia most of us die heart renovators would kill for those.

I really enjoyed the story about the Queen. As for the bedroom, if you can afford it I would change the bed to a heavy wooden bed as I think that is what they would have used in England for a queens bed plus a bed crown over the head of the bed. I would not paint the floor!!! As for the curtains you could aways add a gold trim at the bottom and gold pull backs to save money on new drapes. I would definitely change the rug, you can use a white bed spread if you don't want to use color then add a gold throw blanket draped over the end of the bed for show. I think traditionally though they would have used heavier curtains like velvet etc. For the mantel I would put a sculptured piece of art and maybe a candlebra, maybe a copper vase with flowers. You might consider for the wall framing the family crest or frame both the flags of France & England. Good luck, Katy USA 🇺🇸

Thank you Karen for telling us Eleanor’s story. It was so interesting. This is one of the reasons I enjoy yours and Bo’s vlogs so much - because they are so different from the usual chateau channels. I can’t wait to hear the next queens story. I wonder if some red velvet curtains on the windows and bed with gold along the bottom might be a way to bring in the love from her work with couples relationships and gold from the hem of her dress maybe.
As for vacationing this summer; we are going from Nova Scotia 🇨🇦to see our boys in Manitoba and then later we are going to Barbados to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. You need to get an iron like Stephanie has at Chateau de Lalande. You put your sheets thru it and they are ironed. It’s marvelous. If you do a steamer you need a commercial one. Check The Lady’s Maid for recommendations. I’ve put sheets on bed and then ironed them. Works pretty good,

As a of relative of Eleanor don’t make it so colorful that it’s not restful. Maybe a poem on the wall with an instrument with it. Red is too strong color for the room, maybe in a fabric print ? Very interesting over all great job.

This was so interesting. I love history and you are so good in story telling. The idea with gold and red (maybe velvet) is awesome, maybe add some floral patterns to make it look alive and colorfoul. The ides with book shelf full with poetry and Robin Hood book is great, as well as the vase with fresh flowers/ roses and the idea of framed family tree. Maybe you could find some old music notes and frame them and hang it in the bathroom? Are you planning on changing the furniture or renovating the bathrooms? Just a little tip, maybe put the armour somewhere else? It would be strange to have a mirror next to a mirror and they are not safe behinf the bathroom doors. In my experience, most guests dont even use them. They key chains you did are also beautiful but could maybe have a matching colours with the colour schemes? And or a door mat in front of each room?

For the poetry you said see liked sewing, embroidery, writing, and music. I would do a a corner of the room with a old writers desk with bookshelves that had not just books in French and English, cooking books, how to on the tapestry, poetry,and books on the story of her and her children
I would find a few needlepoints, lace, and the rest. I large tapestry, a small 5’10 picture with needlepoint, a basket 🧺 with yarn and needles, a few small how to kits. I would put a small table with a chair. The table would have a radio that would be a decoy. Like a grand father clock with a radio (with a volume controller) or record player. You could store records, cds, what ever you choose can be stored in the bottom of the clock and the bookshelf. I really liked the picture of the family tree because it had the look of needle point and covers the family members and not a photo. Get some towels and other linens embroidered with the logo you have on the keychain.
The only thing I could think of to cover her love of colors and prison by making the curtains made with stripes with bold colors like the colors of the lamp she loved. The deep burgundy, gold and emerald green should be your focus colors because of her, the area, and her lamp. These are all ways to decorate cheaply with the space to add on as you spend the next 20 years finding little objects that will be perfect for each space in the house. I like that in the moment you have usable spaces. On the side collect items in groupings then decorate. These things you collect should have “1” BIG RULE. Never buy something that if it can’t move to multiple places. The higher the price it HAS to have options. Cheap it will do until I find that perfect thing.
I have been watching your videos to catch up while I’m house/pet sitting and so many ideas. Binge watching =lots of messages from that person.

With a nod to Raymond, use Crusader Kingdoms decor. Eleanor loved the exotic. Mix with heraldic decor, art and rich fabrics. You may want " subtle" but Elanor was anything but. She adored her luxuries. Display the coats of arms of Eleanor, John, Richard, Aquitaine etc, plus the historical crests of France and England. Feature Medieval pewter and silverware, including crystal, but also feature tapestries as Eleanor collected them. Bold and rich colours should be much in evidence to do Eleanor justice.

@@queensescape in my earlier suggestions, I wanted to add that the chambers at the time would have had huge carved wood beds.. but "that's a lot" 😉
Take in consideration that the architecture, the style, the shape of the windows, and the fireplace in the bedroom are not at all medieval. Heavy references to medieval style in this room would not really match… 😉

I think red curtains would not be conducive to a restful nights sleep but my suggestion would be perhaps finding a vibrant wallpaper to put on the wall behind the bed and pull inspiration from that for the rest of the soft furnishings. (just a thought)

To represent music, you could place pictures of her children on antique sheet music pages.
Golden floor boards would be fabulous. You could pair it with red damask drapes, lined with gold. A carved wooden bed with a bed crown wound anchor the room. Check out “Journey to the Chateau” video from this week. Patrick restored a bed crown step by step and made the drapes for it.
A large area would also be great.
There is a wonderful picture of Eleanor on Google, dressed in a purplish dress, lined with green and wrapped in a lush red/gold cape.
It would make a great color palette for her room.
To represent her poetry, you could place an antique desk, decorated with an antique ink jar and feather pen.
The dresser on the right could be replaced with a book shelf. Maybe you can find a piece of furniture that has drawers at the bottom and a nook shelf on top. It would provide storage for guests and reading material in the top.

What amazing story of History , thank u for telling that history very interesting, in the life of Royals in that day and it would have been a tough life too . Be neat to see what u are going to do to her room . The duck looked yummy too . I've only got to watch your video as parts of our country has been hit by a big Cyclone and it's a disaster, we are good but some places are not in a good way . Take care .

Your question about vacation. Our vacation is already booked for 2 weeks in Mackinaw City Michigan on our boat. We have paid for the slip and can come and go when we want. Plus it is cool up north in Michigan. Can't afford to go anywhere else.
Question on Bed and Breakfast I have only stayed at 1 in Wisconsin. My host was a chef in his later years. He always had fresh fruit out on the table. Warmed baked muffins or donuts. Box of cookies for sweet tooth people. Bottles of 2 juices, Milk for cereal and ☕️ then he would cook two breakfasts that were freshly made and you could pick your choice. I think Breakfast was Egg, Holiness sauce, potatoes, choice of bacon or sausage, or small bowl of oat meal with cream and fresh fruit. Any sweets or fruit left over we were allowed to snack on throughout the day. Then if you stayed over night he would cook dinner. You were responsible for lunch. It is different in USA than France or Europe. He had a TV room & Library to pull books from or play board games. He had a lovely swing on front porch so you could watch birds at the feeders. Hope it helps.

@Queen's Escape I just thought of the other thing they did to display history in the bed and breakfast. Their home was about a big lawyer and his family and people who lived there in the past. They went charity hunting to find dresses, hats, gloves, shoes, etc. They would leave the outfit sometimes hanging in the closet. Some of the rooms had a dress and hat hung on the front of the door or they would hang the dress somewhere on the poster bed or lay it on the bed as decoration. They used handmade quilts from that time for each of the beds in the bedrooms. Or they would leave a drawer open with folded clothes or near bathroom like towels in a drawer etc.
Maybe change the drapes to a rich, royal color and trim the bottom in gold. Maybe paint an accent wall in a deep rich color that compliments the drapes. The sheer curtains on the bed and the bedding would look better in a rich royal complimentary color.
