I’ll be honest. When you live in a place like California, where it is not uncommon to see gas nearing $7 to $8 Per gallon during Summer and fall months, even the inflated electricity we pay, it still saves driving this thing. I do have one, but also have a Duramax Diesel 3.0, which is excellent on fuel. But for distances with 100-150 miles, the Lightning can be a great option.

If Ford was smart, they would use an actual engine as a generator that would charge the batteries which would allow the electric motor go for much, much longer. At least the Ford dealerships are consistent... I took my 2015 F-250 in for its oil change and tire rotation. When I got home, just for giggles, I put my torque wrench on a wheel and all the lug nuts were torqued to 80 ft-lbs. Spec is 160 ft-lbs for my vehicle. When I brought this to the service manager's attention, I got no apology, only the explanation that they must have used an F-150 torque tube instead of the F-250 one. He said if I brought it in he'd be glad to re-torque all the lug nuts. Duh???? Why would I do that if I'm checking my vehicle with my own torque wrench? I've never been back.

    • @usa-ev
      @usa-ev 4 месяца назад

Environmentally speaking it doesn't matter how long you personally own an EV because it will still be on the road with the next owner.
EVs "pay off" the higher carbon production cost of the battery, ICEVs never do, the more ICEVs are driven the worse they are for the environment. Environmentally speaking the best thing to do for an ICEV is to crush it and recycle it into an EV. Of course that's not the best thing for the owner economically.
Battery disposal is not an issue, batteries are first repurposed for stationary storage, and ultimately recycled at the end of their second life. Battery recycling companies are able to recycle >90% of a battery. So everything that is being mined (once) can be used again and again in future generations of batteries. Thus the environmental cost of these future generations of batteries is also much much less.

Don't need to pay $10,000 for a bigger battery since the standard battery has plenty of range for our work. Charge it at night. Never a problem. Great fleet solution. I added a 240V circuit since this isn't our first EV rodeo...
We bought the 240V option as a silent generator for when the power goes out. We set up a generator transfer switch and added another 240V circuit that will feed power from the truck to the main panel in a blackout. The frunk is great additional locked, waterproof storage. No need for tonneau cover or WeatherGuard box taking up bed space.
The water is fine over here on the EV side, come give it a try!

And if you own a house and don't have a garage, often a 220VAC 50amp pigtail out in the open lawn or driveway violated city or county electrical codes.
My daughter lived in a quaint turn of the century traditional village with few garages. However they are wealthy, trendy yuppies...so they buy EVs. I have seen orange extention cords or romex staked with wire stakes out the side windows and onto the driveway or parking pad...with a charger cobbled onto a wooden post. Sometimes a quick trench to bury it raw. Also just loose extentions strewn out.
I also see the city utility meter readers and electrical inspector red tagging the plug and taping citations to the front door.
Many jurisdictions don't allow cowboy setups for 40 or 50 amp boat plugs in yards.

As a Ford mechanic. It has a great deal to do with the overall afterthought engineering that went into the vehicle, most of the Myriad of recalls are software related because Ford did not do enough testing on the vehicle before it was rushed to Market, they come off the carrier with 10 modules already ready for updates, and then there are safety recalls that are not dictated by Ford but by Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, which are just because of poor design. If you live in a city and do a lot of stop and go I don't see a problem. Charge it at the house is a must. Few things to consider though: you won't be traveling far, especially in the winter so be advised. The battery has a limited life span and will need to be rebuilt or replaced. The harder you drive it and the more the abs, stereo, heat, ac ect are used the less range you have- everything runs off of electricity so when it's cold outside and raining the car has to use more juice, which is less range.

The thing with electric vehicles is that most people only drive short trips. To and from work, to and from the grocery store, etc. For people who spend the vast majority of their time only driving 30 miles or less per day, and electric vehicle is a great option. Have a gas vehicle or a hybrid if you wanna make long trips, or to tow. I'm sure that if someone who owns this truck was towing short distances, it'd be fine. Certainly not for trips while towing. An electric F-150 only makes sense if you like trucks and if you plan on doing any towing, it's only for very short distances. Otherwise, an electric car or a hybrid would be a better option. My low mileage, 1995 4WD Suburban suits me just fine. I can get 400 miles on a tank of gas, and a fill-up only takes 5-6 minutes. When I get the urge, I have the freedom to get off the beaten path and not have to worry about where the next charging station may be. My time is valuable...don't want to take twice as long to get somewhere. I also don't have to worry about my house burning down overnight either.

Thanks for the more honest review Scotty! True, a lot of truck owners tow. But, I Know many who don't regularly. And what other well-built electric vehicle has that kind of cargo space for a similar price (and from a company that will certainly be around another decade)?!? Also, $50 for a full battery still sounds cheap compared to a full tank of gas. I spend more to fill up my Honda 8-seater! Where I live in Southern Texas, a looooooot of people have the latest & greatest brand new GMC, Chevy & Ford pickups that are often fully loaded and whatnot, and they're never used for truck stuff, just glorified big sedans that get horrendously worse gas mileage. In that scenario if they've got 50-100k to drop on a truck like that and never use it as a truck, then dare I say the lightning is not a bad choice. The only trucks here that are actually used as trucks are the 90s-00s rangers, 90s-00s GMC & Chevy Trucks, and Tacoma's & Tundras of that same year range. which is pretty funny to me honestly

It all comes down to average miles driven per day. If you drive less than 20 miles per day a level 1 charger can actually work for you, it'll take a few days, but it will trend towards full. You can then drive a bunch like for a weekend trip or something, and then start over. If you ever need to go somewhere quick you can always stop by a fast charger on the way. Obviously not for everyone, but for those who work at home or are retired it can be workable.

Why would you lease or buy if you cant install a level 2 charger at home ?That is where the savings is and in general its fairly substantial. Now leasing for a year is a good idea to see if it works for you. Now 5 years from now these vehichles will be allot better along with charging . Now even today what they can do with a battery is impressive.

The biggest annoyance with long distance driving in any electric vehicle is doubling the time it takes to make the trip.
I took a Tesla on a long distance trips. What normally would take 6-7 hours with a combustion car, took about 12 hours with a Telsa. I like Teslas, but damn the added time for charging is just a huge inconvenience.

I am not a fan of these full electric vehicles. However, we did own a Ford C-Max from 2016-2021. It was a hybrid and was very reliable. We traded it with 80k on it and only replaced the tires and small 12 volt battery.
I liked that my range wasn’t limited by anything (other a fill up)
Where it failed us was when we moved from Florida to Tennessee. Our home is up on a ridge and in the snow it was terrible and traverse the driveway.

When I was at the Ford Dealership I saw many of the electric F150 trucks. They wanted me to buy one. I said no way. I wanted a Ford Escape hybrid. I also bought the extended warranty. The warranty might be a bad idea, but if my car breaks they will fix it and give me a loaner vehicle. Ford does have a 7 year warranty on the battery. I suspect the cost to replace the battery might be high. I think the smart move is to keep the Escape until the battery warranty runs out and then get rid of the car. Thoughts?

All EV batteries in the USA have either a 8 or a 10 year warranty, not 7. They easily last 15+ years or more, and data coming from EV's shows the battery lifespan is far exceeding forecasts.
The data actually shows that most EV owners will never replace the batteries on their cars in the normal average car lifespan of around 13 to 15 years which current cars have.
