  • Loads of Railway Companies have 'Rover' and 'Ranger' tickets, but tucked away on the Southern website is one that you may not have heard of.
The Southern 'Daysave' ticket offers unlimited off-peak (after 10am weekdays) to all stations on its network for just £20. You can't buy it from a ticket office though, you can only order it online and get it posted to you, or you collect it from a nominated station.
Note: It's NOT listed on the National Rail 'Rover and Rangers page, here: www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_...

The "haven" in Newhaven is actually also a sea word! It's cognate with German 'hafen' and Dutch 'haven' meaning harbour - So really it's New Harbour harbour.

Hence the saying "Any safe haven in a storm", I get the impression that a haven is a sheltered place such as The Downs or Torbay and may not be a harbour.

Ahhhhhh, this takes me back to the mid 80's where there was "Network SouthEast Day", where for a tenner (10 quid) you could travel anywhere in the Network Southeast network all day, 12:01am to 11:59PM.
I would be out on a train at around 6am from Portsmouth, to London, spend the day exploring the underground trains, and have it planned so I get on a train that gets to Salisbury and change trains for the Cardiff to Portsmouth before midnight which If I remember was at about 11:45PM, the last Cardiff to Portsmouth.
Once you were on the train, the ticket was valid all the way to Portsmouth.
    Those were the days.

Given that it's a traditional card ticket that your usual computer printer can't print, it seems bizarre that you *have* to order it online, and collect it from a ticket office (even though you can't buy it there) or have it posted. A inconvenient mix of the up-to-date and the old-fashioned.

Public information announcement: If you are catching the ferry from Newhaven to go to Dieppe, alight at Newhaven Town not Newhaven Harbour. If you do get out at Newhaven Harbour by mistake, exit the station on the East side and follow the road North for 10 minutes, walk past Newhaven Town station and cross the railway at the level crossing to gain access to the ferry ticket/boarding office. My wife and I found this out the hard way!

To leave the train for the ferry at Harbour you also have to ignore the information on the ferry website, posters at stations, notices on the train info boards, messages on the train, and often announcements from the on board staff, and even when told in person by on board staff to go, 'are you sure', and then ignore them as you know best.

    • @bertoltb1358

sarahj8231 But the ferry booking site via a phone didn’t mention it, the ticket machine at Brighton really didn’t care, the only station sign about it we could see on the return journey was at Lewes (We really had a good look for them), the dot matrix departure board was too busy, if there was an announcement we didn’t hear it and when they checked our ticket nothing was said. Yes we got it wrong, but we didn’t get a lot of help to put us right.

    • @sarahj8231

Bertolt B13 there is a poster on the platform at town, the route map on the train and at stations that shows the ferry running from town, and doing ticket checks the staff often have to guess if your going for the ferry. And when told the reply is often ‘are you sure’

I’ve bought these tickets a couple of times (starting from Victoria). The first time I was initially planning just to visit Chichester (for a theatre trip and a wander round the city) where an off peak day return would have set me back £31.50 without a Railcard. I ended up having a wonderful day out visiting Arundel and Portsmouth too. One thing to point out is that these tickets don’t work in any ticket barriers which can be a bit frustrating. I also wasn’t able to collect it from a machine at Victoria and had to queue up to get it from the ticket office, but I think there were general problems with their self service ticket machines at the time. Thanks for a great video Geoff!

They have had this ticket for a few years now. When I used to commute from Newhaven to Vic in 2014 they did a 7 day daysaver for about eighty something quid with no time restrictions so I saved about 25 quid a week on the cost of a weekly to London!

Yes. I know Goring station well. Use that when I went to college around there. Back when Network SouthCentral operated services (just before Connex South Central took over) with 'slam door' trains! That's shows you that it was quite a while ago! PS 2:18 Your postman (or Postwoman) must be very punctual Geoff for that shot to work so well!

well done Geoff, another interesting video. I was hoping to trip you up by saying you hadn't visited Bexhill-On-Sea Station but although scrolling through about a hundred photo's I couldn't find one name-plate saying 'Bexhill-On-Sea. It was just Bexhill. The closest I could get was a Br. Rail poster saying 'visit Bexhill-On-Sea'.

My old stamping grounds living in Bexhill-on-SEA and working in Eastbourne. Could not use the train due to schedules though and I loved driving the back road from Cooden to Pevency Bay. I am sure Bexhill used to be on SEA. You could set your watch by hearing the 1001 thumper going through Bexhill-on-SEA at 5 to the hour, every hour.

As a single ticket from London to Shoreham can cost more that £20, this may be a cheaper way to make that journey. (Although I do usually just buy a return from shoreham and discard the outbound bit as a return is cheaper than a single).
Love the fact you were in Shoreham-by-Sea

In my local newspaper there is a promotion allowing you unlimited travel on Northern Rail for just £10. You have to collect a certain number of vouchers in a local paper and collect the tickets from a local railway station where northern trains serve.

I went to Bournemouth with it. Years and years ago. And it was £10! SouthCentral at that time. Thameslink used to have it. And it was cheaper to use that day save from Brighton to Luton than normal cheap day rtn. And they were on sale at tourist offices.

Now that's an idea for next summer!
Buy one of these coupled with two cheap Birmingham-London tickets (LNWR there, Chiltern back) and then get a Victoria-Portsmouth via Arundel train to Chichester (I did the line beyond there to Portsmouth many years ago, when a member of the Great Rail Club!) then head along the coast, including branches to Hastings, then back to Victoria!
    Should be fun!

Winchelsea - these one of these on my old home town line, it used to be somewhat interesting because that's where the Up and Down train's would cross - single platform on the main line and the down would reverse back past the point's, go onto the loop and wait for the Up to come in and clear the block.

If you're ever in Brighton again, we can have a look at the old Kemptown railway. Closed finally in the early 70s, but a lot of "evidence" it was there still stands, including the tunnel that runs underneath one of the biggest hills in Brighton. Let me know

The ticket is not mentioned on the ranger/rover page, but it is mentioned on the list of available ticket types: www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/prbd690bc35ce74100a7ae34c3df5fff.aspx
Turns out you can buy them in-person at: Eastbourne, Lewes, Hastings and Seaford.

Excellent video publicising this type of ticket!!!
Sadly though as explained you have to go looking for them and each company seem to have take on such tickets. Southern appear to cover all routes, yet Northern splits their route network into areas and don't appear to have an all Northern Route ticket.

I notice the siding into Newhaven Marine had a bar across with a red lamp which rather indicates it isnt used anymore. Of course, its raison d'etre, as a boat train terminus, rather declined in the 60s (due to RoRo ferries) and furthermore when they opened the Chunnel. Quai Henri IV in Dieppe disappeared many moons ago along with the fast rail link to Paris.
So heres a thought - how many former Boat Train terminii still exist? (Littlehampton for one). Another thing station wise from your video - whats the remotest station from the town its supposed to serve. ?

I see you travelled from Brighton to Seaford. Did you know you can travel from Brighton (or Hove) to Seaford on a direct train in Adelaide, Australia? the big difference is whilst Seaford station, in England opened in 1864, Seaford Station in Adelaide (also a terminus) opened in February 2014, some 150 years later. Its also on the coast.

Hi Geoff, As an experienced rail traveler, what did you think of the rolling stock on certain S Coast routes, aren't they just the worst in the country. I'm referring to the one where the lady guard was waving to you. I must say you looked very chilled and relaxed, much more so than your London tube marathon. I think the sea air must suit you.

    • @johnorchin8567

flashylite I think they are 313. What are EMUs? During the late 1960's I traveled on 1930's rolling stock which was more comfortable, than these trains. The problem is not so much age,as cheap rubbish to begin with.
