Here's Part 2 of our look at the Trains operated by Southern past and present featuring the Class 377, 171, 455 and 313's.
The continuation of what will hopefully be a new series exploring the trains and rolling stock employed by each of the franchises.
Filmed on a Panasonic HD100 720p, a Sony MiniDV camcorder and an iPhone X.

As a Brighton local I won't miss the 313s when they go. They are well pass their sell by date and need replacing.
Oldest trains on the national network now so I suspect their days are numbered. Covid probably helped them stay in service for a few more years then they would otherwise had done
Always remember the introduction of the 313, everyone was furious the coastway was getting rolling stocks over 20 years older than what it already had. Won’t miss them but will always remember using them late at night after I’ve had a few too many 😂
I had to ride on the 313 to go to an eye hospital appointment in Brighton and I am bound to say I quite liked it! Compared to the Electrostar, it seemed to me there was better ventilation, although it has to be admitted the 313 rattled along a bit!
Enjoyed the video very much with loads of detail.Doing a layout too .Take care.
The other week I went on 313201 and it is very nice inside!

Currently work for Southern and enjoyed the video! Would love to see a GX version at some point...
GX video is being planned, I'm just waiting for work to take me in the direction of the 387's or stay local restrictions to be lifted to get the last couple of shots I need.
455s are now withdrawn from tattenham corner, now have 377/6s I remember when they had their original interiors with south west trains, never saw them with southern.
Fact:the 377/7 were moved while the 377/2 took over they ran as 8 cars then to 4 cars until they were moved and the 377/7 returned to the west london line

The last surviving 313s will eventually be retired this year. So It'll just be the 377s and 171s
5:35 East Midlands Railway actually and you might be interested to know electrification of the Uckfield line has now been confirmed.
When was the Uckfield line confirmed for electrification?

We could have the 379's replacing the 171's if they weren't withdrawn. Because they have been withdrawn in february, this year.
Imo the turbostars are the only trains in southern Fleet that I would ride on willingly and they're the trains of my childhood being my favourite for the pas 8 years so don't go class 171. 😪

You say the 313 is the oldest stock in regular use, but the class 43 HST are still in very regular use around the country including on GWR, X Country and in Scotland. Also the class 57 is in regular daily (or nightly) service on the Riviera sleeper service. These all pre-date the 313 by a very long way in the case of the class 57.
Your right, however the 313's are the oldest emu's working on the national rail network operating standard timetabled services.

Trains are allocated a number on the TOPS system where there is space. I'm not sure who is ultimately responsible for this, could be NR or the ORR.
2:04 I remember when the 377/3s had those little purple things above the doors, what did they say?
To be honest I can't remember what they said, They only seem to appear on the 377/3's so could have something to do with the services on the South Coast at the time.
@@BPMR could have been Wi-fi fitted. Do vaguely remember when they formed 6 coach services that the recorded station anoucment said saying Wi-fi was available

Update: Southern Class 455's has officially been removed in 2022. 313217 is now being used for parts which now makes it 19 Class 313s.. A class 171 has been moved to EMR as predicted but now it awaits its new paint scheme and interior. The rail tour for the 313's is Unknown as well with their withdrawn date.. rumours are the tour will be in May or July...
455s no longer operate at Tattenham corner I believe
I have to admit that every time I pass through Purley I only see class 377's heading in that direction.
@@BPMR I live on the Tattenham corner branch, my local station is Tattenham corner and I haven’t seen any 455s there in years
when will the class 313s be replaced on southern
I've not heard of any plans to replace the 313's yet but I can't imagine that they have much time left. I'll be surprised to still see them around by then end of the decade.
I know the the 377s 375s and 717s at Ashford International i have travelled on all as for comfort i still prefer the 395s there was a Romer that overhead wires for a new fleet of trains at Ashford International to replace 717s but nothing yet has happened
313s are horrid i always wait for a london train to get me to college bc the brighton ones are so crusty
The 12 units are no longer going to EMR the transport for Wales 170s are going instead

Thank you. This was one of my earlier documentary videos and its a learning curve to balance the audio right. Some of my earliest videos, the 'from the archive series' have no music or commentary, just the sounds of the trains (once you get past the opening credits).

my dad works for southern and he said the uckfeld line is going to have third rail
That sounds interesting. When I worked for Southern I remember it being said that it would cost £1m a mile. Not sure how true this is thou. It would make sense to electrify the route.

If only! Unfortunately there appears to be a crackpot idea circulating among the powers that be that 3rd rail dc is inherently dangerous and must never be extended.
I despise the 455. Such a uncomfortable journey compared to the electrostar.
455 s are bad 👎🏿
