    If you've ever read Isaac Asimov's Robot series, this is a central plot point in the last book, "Robots and Empire," which leads to the founding of the Galactic Empire, much later - with the anchor that is the old world cut free, humans have no choice but to continue searching out other safe harbors, and do so at an exponential rate. I think you're absolutely right, and I love your concept for how that could play out- especially since we already know the groundwork for this sort of narrative has already been laid out in lore and in the game's galaxy (Salome/ Formidine Rift).

    We’ve seen the dedication of traders and explorers, think it’d be extremely cool and important to allow players to run micro governments. Or at least build their own stations. The dedication of traders and explorers would now be rivaled, and that’d make players want to strive to support who they want to see rise to power and let others fall. I think the addition of fleet carriers was elite devs way of hinting at us that something bigger is coming.
    I wrote this before watching the video and very pleasantly surprised at how much I agreed with pilot on this one.

      I joined this game today with the supposition that if I were smart enough, I'd one day be able to help establish some kind of... SOMETHING, on the far side of the galaxy. Seeing this has made me a little depressed - I thought there'd be something out there to reach. And maybe there is, in the form of new planets and stars, but what for? Do I want to scoop fuel off of suns for 600 days of gameplay just to reach a remote location where I can't build anything for others to see, contribute to, or even destroy? I know I'm signing up for "space money simulator" but awkwardly I expected more than fatter ships. Perhaps I did myself, and this game a disservice in doing so however. Idk.

  • @ZorgonKiloEchoLima
    @ZorgonKiloEchoLima 3 года назад +7

    Yeah all of that sound great in theory, but realistically:
    Engineers would have to move, material farming spots would be less accessible, technology brokers would be terrible to find, material traders would take forever to be implemented in the new stations... Just look at the Pleiades.
    I've been for a long time an advocate for Elite being more cutthroat in it's approach, having more risk involved in it's gameplay in general, and also be *primarily* player driven. But for that to happen Elite needs to acknowledge problems that most of it's player base is *unwilling* to accept.
    After over 7 years of playing since closed beta testing, doing in-depth tutorials for engineering and explaining flight mechanics and overall game knowledge with people from my countrie's community, I've come to realize that the biggest thing holding Elite down might not be just FDev, but the majority of people that play the game.
    EDIT: MAYBE you can have some kind of ferry system, where you constantly have large ships going from "old" bubble to "new" bubble every other day, so it gives players a way to travel long distances in a convenient and short amount of time. That still doesn't address the biggest issue though.

    The worry I have about "burning the bubble" is two-fold, depending on what route they go.
    - If they don't massively increase jump ranges, we're not gonna end up with a wide array of new microbubbles, we're gonna end up with one bubble everyone spends their time in just because of populations of players naturally glomping together.
    - If they *do* massively increase jump ranges, the galaxy is going to feel far, *far* smaller, and that's not a good thing imho. It means even more of the galaxy becomes effectively flyover country, systems nobody goes to because it's between points A and B.

      then there is the problem of the superpowers, the ONLY reason why the pilot federation is mostly left alone is do to their neutrality, and because they themself only have "limited" systems, and no plans to expand to begin with.
      That Neutrality would be shatterd if Pilot federation members, be it sanctioned or not by the Pilot federation would start forming their own colonies, be it as small as it may be. I assure you, the Federation and the empire would not want a second third or fourth alliance to form, possibly snatching valuable resources away.
      now you would bring in colonia, and how that was "basicly founded by player trough community goals" but the difference is, colonia was founded by actual indipendent factions, the Pilots only provided support with compensation. As well as it being SO far away from their Seat of power that they cant make a reasonable claim about it.
      and that even ignores the Economic problems of this suggestion in universe, its unlikely that a Single small colonie would be self sustainable fast enough to not require enourmes ammounts of resources almost daily, a Trader using a Megaship would not reasonably take the journey to some small colonie because its not profitable, meaning you/other commanders would have to regularly ship supplys there enmass, or it just fucks on realism and just claims its self sufficent imidiatly.

      To be completely fair to FDev, they're relatively small in the grand scheme of things. Sure they're no indie development company but they're not exactly a behemoth. People keep asking them to make things, to pull them selves in 100 different directions, but they just don't have the manpower. This sort of gameplay, as cool as it might be, would be a problem that would arguably require more manpower than frontier can spare to the project. I'm not saying they're above criticism, I'm just saying people have glorious expectations that likely won't be met.

  • @theoriginalkeysto
    @theoriginalkeysto 3 года назад +3

    This is exactly why I think they're burning these stations. I've always said they should be slowly expanding the bubble, the superpowers spreading out, gaining new lands and systems, not trading station control back and forth. With new stations there is room for more BGS, more warring and more opportunities. I think eventually you'll see player factions being able to control systems for a certain amount of time then being able to start building star ports. That would make this game great. They could even tie it into BGS and power powerplay and say you've held the system uncontended for 1 month, then you have a fleet carrier show up to with delivery missions, do the delivery missions and after 2 weeks you see a star port being constructed, now, defend this while it being created, 2 weeks later there's a star port. Depending on the amount of deliveries and defence the faction has done you'll have a port with certain things like shipyards or outfitting, if its successful. If you're not successful you get one without those things. Its doable. I'm sure.

  • @denverbeek

    We need player-built space stations and settlements that require the same upkeep as all the other NPC stations. We need a way to create those resources used for maintaining the bubble from player-built industry and factories. We need ways for large groups of players to get together as a single unified group of explorers, colonizers, industrial moguls, traders, private security forces, or pirates to influence the galaxy in more ways than running delivery missions for a faction until they start a civil war that you never get to see happen.
    Of course, this event ended a friggin' year ago but still, it's nice to dream sometimes.

    I wish to be a long range explorer for a mining flotilla. Finding untouched asteroid belts, or systems with multiple planets with rings… and basically strip mine them. Then purchase the supplies to build our own planetary base, with wings of T-9’s dropping off metric tons of low temperature diamonds. How glorious would that be?

And all I can think about is all those jumps it took me to get to colonia in a dedicated explorer, how would this affect combat ships, are they limited to staying in one mini bubble or would there be ai fleet carrier type trains? Idk what I'm sayin tbh I just came back to ED recently. Great vid, who knew u could sell me on letting people burn in a station

      Also that comment about having to have an alt hit home even for engineering I'd have to get everyone unlocked before considering living in colonia. I love it out there, but it's hard to stay out there when the story and all the "important stuff" is at the bubble. For now at least I'd like some more attention to colonia to make it more viable for newer people to live in maybe? It's so pretty out there but I feel like you can't viably live out there unless you're endgame?

      Elite has serious content issues. The game has been out since 2014, and has only drip fed new content since. Most of the introduced systems were met with serious controversy; engineering, capital ships, power play, area... the list goes on.
      I look back on my time in elite as some of the most interesting and rewarding hours spent gaming in my life, but being perfectly honest, those hours felt hollow in a way that frustrates me to this day. I was able to buy all the ships, engineer some of them to peak performance, grinded away getting credits... and for what? I didn't have any meaningful impact in the game world. I didn't participate in a satisfying communal experience. Mostly, I just interacted with menus and flew through empty space. There are highlights for sure; your first thargoid encounter, surviving a big fight, seeing a unique vista... but those moments are fleeting and scarce.
      Elite is a fantastic game. For a while. After that, it's just frustrating, mostly because the DNA is THERE for it to be a truly amazing game like no other, but it lacks the support from its devs to truly grow into its potential. The new expansion is right around the corner, and unfortunately it looks like it's just going to be more of the same, but this time with legs on the ground.

Now that there are commanders with many billions of credits and nothing to use them for, I suggest adding a mechanic for players collectively investing in having stations built anywhere they want. @@tomasmurphy9888 probably not the most accurate term, but it wasnt meant to be literal. Or at least not in the way you're interpreting it. I still think you can be the main character shall you be the hero of certain battles or war depending on the amount you've contributed. Have logs in the planetary description of the battles/war that have taken place on the planet. Contribute enough, be the hero of said war and have your name in that log with those involved in the war. This game has no narrative, so the being the main character depends on your imagination relevant to your contribution in taking over a certain planet/liberating certain faction(s). Shall it be delivering supplies, destroying enemy supplies and equipment, espionage, or kills in battle.
      Being the main character depends on the personal narrative of your imagination. But the system has to be in place for such personal narrative to develop.

    I played this game for about 6m before parking my ships. I'd like to see Elite move towards the route of what X2/X3 (maybe X4) where players can build their own facilities for trade. Mining stations, food processing plants, energy plants, etc. where we can trade in resources we created or created by others and use those resources to, as you say here, create new bubbles or expand existing ones. While it would be a level of management that many players wouldn't want to partake in, I feel it would give players more options to enjoy the game.
