    do you use macro lens for just macro photography or treat it like a regular lens that can focus really close?

      It is a solid choice when it comes to macro and quality but you should also look into Sony's own 90mm

    I just bought the sony 90mm like two weeks ago.
    And I have to say it I LOVE IT. Stabilize is a most in macro.

    • @stefan_becker
      @stefan_becker 3 года назад +2

      It's far less efficient at macro distances. And if there is the tiniest bit of wind, images will be blurry anyway - no matter, if you have oss or not. I'll trade in my Sony 90mm for the Sigma because of the better correction of chromatic aberrations and because of the imho much nicer bokeh of the Sigma (at non-macro distances).

    You've just made me put my Canon 100mm L Macro up for sale. I was using it with the MC-11 on my a7 IV, but this new Sigma is too good! You continue to shrink my wallet! Ordered and arriving in two days. Can't wait! Now just waiting for the Tamron 35-150 to be in stock...and 'maybe' the new Sigma 20mm f/2.0 DG DN. I need to block your RUclips page so I don't have to file for bankruptcy!! 🤣😂

    A very nice review. Comparing to the Sony 90 macro lens, which one would you choose for car/car details photography? Is the 90’s AF system so much of a value comparing to the 105’s price, focal length and weather sealing?

    • @PavSZ
      @PavSZ  3 года назад +2

      I have compared them both side by side in another video.
      I wouldn't use macro lens for car detail photography - you'd be better with a good 50mm or a decent zoom like 24-70 for that. Macro will do it but the af on any macro lens is never going to be brilliant

    Great video! In my opinion, buy the Sony for your E-mount. Nothing like the native lens experience. Also, think long term. Native lenses have a higher resale value when you want to trade. Sony has after service shops everywhere if the lens needs to be repaired for whatever the reason. Can't go wrong with the 90mm...

  • @davidwallace8980
    @davidwallace8980 3 года назад +2

    Is it one to one magnification? Is focusing internal or does it extend? Lack of OSS is a negative for me, as I do some work with APS-C bodies without IBIS. The ease of switching between manual and AF on the Sony is fantastic. The Sigma extra reach is nice.

    • @PavSZ
      @PavSZ  3 года назад +1

      1:1 magnification and it does not extend. Lack of OSS could be a problem on a camera without build in IBIS. Although going proper close for macro shots ideally would need smaller apertures and a lot more light - depth of field is crazy shallow - so tripod would be a must anyway.
      I love 90mm's auto/manual push pull switch but with Sigma's being a standard switch is not an issue at all.

    I recently bought it, it still does not arrive, you think that having this lens for photography of jewelry with photostacking, and portrait of a model being 2.8F, it would also be worth buying a batis 85 1.8F for portrait. Because from my point of view for portraiture, this sigma would only work in studio because of its 2.8F but a batis with 1.8 would give me a better bokeh outdoors, what do you think?

  • @DutchHeavyw8

    I was just looking to buy the 90mm macro but this made me doubt

    • @shadda
      @shadda 3 года назад +1

      The #1 thing the Sony has over this lens, isn't the stabilization but the linear focus control. It's frustrating to do hand-held focus stacking on a fly by wire lens.

  • @shadda
    @shadda 3 года назад

    I wonder if it's just my copy, but mine will sit there and vibrate with the focus motor even when I'm not actively focusing. Vibrates the whole camera (I don't think anything is broken, though)

  • @StephaanBOSS56

    Good video, but as an owner of the 90mm Sony, I see nothing I can't do with my Sony lens, plus the fact that it has OSS build-in. I bought it secondhand for 400 EUR and it was hardly used. The portret pictures on top of it all are not really convincing for me. Just my thoughts.

    • @PavSZ
      @PavSZ  3 года назад +1

      I am also an owner of 90mm. In my opinion bokeh is much nicer from Sigma. Sony is great, don't get me wrong, one of the sharpest lenses of all time but the bokeh it produces is very harsh in comparison.
      I will be doing a side by side comparison video in a couple of weeks. Thanks for watching

  • @groundcontrol6876
    @groundcontrol6876 3 года назад +1

    I'm torn between this and the Sony. The only thing making me doubt this lense is the FBW system. Did you find the latency (vs the instant mechanical focus ring) to be troublesome when manually focusing to shoot very close macro shots? I just saw your Sony 90mm review and your macro pictures were mind blowing. Particularly the one of your cat's nose. There was so much detail there on the hairs and such. Did you capture that handheld?! Or was it on a tripod? Your feedback would be very much appreciated, I'm just getting back to photography and wanna order my first lens, as before that I only had a point and shoot.

    • @PavSZ
      @PavSZ  3 года назад +2

      I don't think there is any latency with focusing on Sigma lens. I didn't notice any difference with it at all, even when doing macro adjustments.
      Yes, the cat nose and cat's eye in the 90mm review were shot hand held. Saying that all macro shots in this Sigma review were shot hand held too.
      If I didn't have the Sony lens already, I'd personally buy Sigma now. Check out my side by side comparison video.
      Thank you for watching. Let me know which one you are going to go for.

      it's no different than any other lens with huge difference between closest (macro) focusing and the infinity.
      Once you have it focused on a person, any standard focusing in that focal range is instant. If you try to get a full body shot and then macro of an eye, it might struggle a bit.
