Picked up the Zeiss 55 1.8 a couple of years ago in this is easily my favourite lens to use. Have been thinking about the this 90mm macro for a while, loved your video.
Quickie tip: Diffraction doesn't usually start to kick in until ~f/16-ish, *however* , if you reduce the focusing distance then diffraction starts to get worse much sooner - it can start to mess with image sharpness as soon as f/11. This doesn't mean you can't shoot at those tighter apertures, but if you're looking to squeeze as much sharpness as you can out of the shot and the focusing distance is very close then it's something to remember. About ~f/8 would be as tight as I would want to push very close macro shots if sharpness is a concern. Chasing a bug around a flower? No problems - go for it - f/11 will be fine. Getting super fine detailed shots of a piece of jewelry or something like that? Stick to f/8.
I don't know about "best" but it is certainly the most SOLID prime in Sony's lineup. Unlike newer G and GM offerings this one is ALL METAL. Also, the push pull snap focal ring is the very definition of solid. I really like the Diamond knurled texturing on it too, way better than the horizontally stripped rubber on the rest of the lineup. Part of me wish that the rest of the G and GMs can be of this all metal construction with its satin finish and finely checkered focus ring... yeah, yeah, it will make everything heavier than they have to be but that feel is to die for. It doesn't have an aperture ring though so you'll need to use the shutter wheels on the body. -- You can pick one up used for $500 give or take. If you have the money, it's one of the most satisfying buys in the realm of FE lens irrespective of price or brand.
it is a brilliant lens and the best macro money can buy. It is however NOT standard lens. You need to learn how to use it. Shooting macro, manual focusing it the best option sometimes (with all macro lenses)
This is the best macro lens that I have ever owned! I sent your video to the Atomos guys in New York. They were impressed with how you solved the sync issues. I have used your method with great success. There is a new sync time code generator box coming out with Atomos. It will calibrate the Atomos via the HDMI to the Sony with a 3.5mm cable. It will automatically sync other sync boxes or you can buy a smaller sync box to hook up to other devices including your cell phone or Go Pro. Great videos!
thank you and thank you! I just got a Nikon Z6 to go with my Ninja V and the delay on screen is insane. I rise my hand up and it's not happening on the screen yet! I will try to get sync time code generator to test it on video. Thank you very much for kind words and for watching my videos!
I researched this lens for 2 months before picking it up...Absolutely love it and can tell already it is my favorite lens and I own three Gmasters lenses...Was originally meant for my A9 and A7III but find myself using it more on my 6400. Hands down best lens to buy for your Sony Emount...

I love this lens. One of the sharpest and nicest macros out there hands down. But I still hope Sony will give us some longer macro focal lengths like 150 or 180 mm for those times where you really need that bigger distance.
You can try raynox 250 dcr first I suppose. It will fit all lens and make all non macro lens focus very close and can also increase the magnification to 2:1.
Wow, thank you! This was exactly what I needed to see before I buy that lens. You just underlined every thought I had about it :D I love your content btw, keep it up!
I love this lens, too! In combination with A7RIII it provides excellent quality and sharpnes, on the A6500 I can use this lens for small and shy insects or others. Sony, i thank you for this lens 👍
Best lens I've ever owned, the 85 is lovely but in no way near how good the optics are in comparison to the 90, Thanks to YOU in helping me making that decision!
I’m trying to decide between these two lenses. I’ve seen your Sigma 105 2.8 reviews and the comparison between these two lenses more than once. It does not get easier😄.
You made this lens look so good, Pav that I wanted to go and caress my own copy! It has a very unique build and stands apart from all the other Sony lenses. It is a toss up between the 90mm and the 24mmGM which one I love handling the most. I got my 90 macro a few months after it was released and went through a bitter snowstorm across town to buy it as it was the only copy left in the city due to being in such high demand. It was my first full frame lens, bought before I had switched over from my a6500. At the time, it was also the most money that I had ever spent on a lens, ha,ha!
I have a collection of macro lenses & this is one of my favorites as it so versatile - can be used for all kinds of close ups - design+detail work to landscape etc. I used to use it on the a7r2 & nowthe r4 on which the AF has improved & even stabilization has improved so I do a certain amount of handheld work. One of my favorite lenses!
Great review, love your style. This lens has been on my wish list for years and…still is. It’s quite a lot of money for something I don’t know I need 😅
First time to your channel! Great content! I’ve been using this lens for the past few years (A7RIV) and I dipped my toes into the Fuji water with the XT4. I’m wondering if you could offer your opinion on the Sony 90mm 2.8 vs the Fuji 80mm 2.8 macro. Thoughts?
Robert, the Fuji XT4 is a 26 mp APS-C camera, whereas the A7RIV is a 61mp Full frame camera, and the Sony lend I stated by DXO mark as one of the best in the world and will stand up to 61mp, so the Sony wins in terms of image quality (especially blown up ) & tripod mounted. However the Fuji in terms of camera stabilization may be better than the Sony & the lens has fast auto focusing. Perhaps for hand held the Fuji will give you more "keepers" than hand held Sony, but the keepers from Sony will have better IQ. In addition the Sony can be cropped much more. If your only intent is to post online, I doubt the difference will be noticeable to the naked eye by most viewers.
I love this lens. I'm looking for a lens for products photography and the product sizes range from 50mm*50mm to 600mm*600mm, Can you please advise whether this lens is suitable for this? if not, can you please recommend a good lens?
I saw your 50mm macro review. In your opinion, which one is better (only from macro perspectives)? Secondly, what is the minimum distance between the object and the lens from your test? You mentioned in the 50mm review, that it is 5cm.
90mm is a better lens overall - best to google minimum focusing distance for these lenses. I can only tell you that it is very close to the end of the lens
Sony says that the minimum distance is 28cm and is just a general reference. Some experts (you included) might have tested and found the "best" minimum distance to work with.
@@PavSZ I watched the video you posted, already, but thanks once again. You have new subscriber😎👍🙂.My personal choice is sigma 105 mm,,since I already have sony 85 1.8,similar focal length to sony 90 mm macro. What will be your personal choice,if you don't have and want to buy macro lens now?
I just purchased this lenses and I have to agree this lens is awesome I am beautiful bouquet it puts on I said the worlds sharpest lens and I believe it love it and it’s my most favorite
I would disagree the focus can be very fast, I have actually used the 90mm for runway fashion photography with amazing results. It is also amazing portrait lens as well.
There is no issue with focus when u use it on Sony A7iii or similar bodies, which I use. It struggles in low light on A7. I have used it on both bodies and can tell the difference. Still its the sharpest lens I have used and don't regret buying it.
I have it, bought in November 2018 as one of my first 2 lenses when I switched to Sony (the other one was the Batis 40/2.0). I love it too, only issue with it is when using it to shoot people the eye AF often misses the eyes. Not by much, but it's noticeable. When instead you manage the nail the focus, the sharpness is unbelievable. But yeah if you need to melt away a busy background 2.8 might not be enough. I found that just by being a bit more careful on the background choice it can work very well indeed for portraits.
that;'s the trade off between super blurred background or perfect sharpness on eyes. I shoot people a lot with 50mm f1.4 and 80% of time I have it at f4 - safe
Thank you for doing these awesome reviews, I've actually found a couple of lenses because of your recommendations. Btw, I absolutely love the lighting you use with the red and greenish (?) tint like at 1:08, it really makes it pop and look super techy
Thanks Dan!! I use Boltzen Came-TV RGB tube lights for those shots (and all other colour lighting in my videos) I have reviewed them few weeks ago ruclips.net/video/9igzwdJK2fA/видео.html
Do you experience any ‘movement’ in the lens? Particularly at close focus in manual? A slight clunk… not always there and disappears when OIS is switched off.
Would this lens be suitable for street photography?…..looking for something that can handle macro and street as those are my main two interests when shooting. Thanks.
yes, I can't see why not. The only thing to watch for is that the auto focus needs to be in the ball park area for it to work quick. It has got very loooooooong way to travel from macro to infinity and it will sometimes hunt if you change the focal plane from super close to far away often. Check out the other two options for Sony-E as well: Sigma 105mm f2.8 Macro: ruclips.net/video/FVnpQa7QsdY/видео.html Sony 50mm f2.8 Macro: ruclips.net/video/FPf_1DBqZxw/видео.html
Build quality is top and pictures are tacksharp. the only downside of this lens is the rather noisy autofocus if you do films. also a really nice feature is the af/mf "switch". also this is i believe the only focus by wire lens for sony which is linear and not acceleration based (meaning no matter how fast or slow you manually focus, it will always focus to the same distance relative to the position of the focus ring)
For me the bokeh in other than macro use is not great - too busy for my taste. But then again this is a macro lens and for that it's great. Still for me its picture quality is not quit as good as Laowa lenses but the build quality/reliability is better.
Most dedicated macro lenses are very good (I have the Laowa 100mm macro and Sigma 105mm, currently).. Having used both the Sony and the Sigma I personally think the Sigma 105mm has the edge over this (barely) for FE if you don't need the built in image stabilisation... But both are extremely good lenses..
@@PavSZ The Laowa is 2:1 which is nice, but obviously manual only so not good for focus stacking but for single shot macro it's a lovely lens to use and the IQ is superb too.. It's a true APO design so you won't see any bokeh CA..
I have the Laowa 65mm macro (Manual) lens - It may be 2:1, but the Sony 90mm f2.8 images are far superior, albeit it does cost twice as much. The Laowa, however, is tiny and easy to carry about when hiking.
@@PavSZ thanks. I usually take these food pictures on a cruise ship in their dining so carrying a tripod and setting up one is not possible Do you suggest buying a light to attach to my camera or boost up the ISO to possibly somewhere between 800 to 3200?
@@NLMusique I don't think macro lens is the best for generic food photography all together. Great for going in super close to focus on one part of the dish but may be not the best for shooting full plates etc. It will be ok, just not the most versatile. I've been shooting food professionally for nearly 20 years with 50mm and only recently with 24-105. With that I can get more of the food in the shot and go super close if I need to. In regards to lights - I've been using a lot just a single portable LED video light and placing it on the table, next to the food, pointing it up, then using a big white card held just above to bounce the light back. Pretty much all these were shot like that: instagram.com/joannesdinner/
@@PavSZ thanks. Yes, I like to see a full plate of food and not zoom all the way in. I'm using the Sony a6400. Not sure if the 50mm can focus that close The only lens I can focus very close is my Sony Zeiss 24 mm f1. 8. Focal distance is 6.3 inch From what you say as you take food photography for over 20 years, it doesn't look like the macro lens would benefits me at all Maybe if I upgrade from a Sony a6400 to a6600 would benefit me more since the a6600 has IBIS? Any thoughts? Both the a6400 and the Sony Zeiss 24mm are not stabilized
hey Pav, i'm making infrared photography with my fullspectrum camera and i'd like to know if this 90mm got some hotspot in this case ? thanks a lot ! =)
but it is only for APS-C cameras and fully manual. Although I do like manual focusing, sometimes (like portrait work) I prefer to autofocus - a bit quicker
yes but it would be pretty much any zoom too. This is a macro lens with which you can get super close to your subject with and getting this close you certainly would not see a model anymore
@@PavSZ I use all three platforms, fuji lenses are usually smaller and lighter. But have compromises.. Was hoping maybe you had some knowledge on both lenses.
Hi, I have a question, what's the difference between taking a picture of a quarter with a 1:1 macro lens, or a zoom lens, zoomed to make the quarter fit the screen to the same size as the 1:1 ratio macro lens? If the answer is nothing, because I would get the same result, then why would I need to purchase a macro lens? Thank you for your help. I'm trying to figure out if I can do macro photography with the lenses I already have, (16-35 24-70 & 70-200) I do not have a macro lens yet, but I'm thinking about buying the SONY FE 90mm F2.8 G OSS full-frame lens. Thank you.
the minimum focusing distance will be different and totally different looking final results. There is no zoom lens that you can get as close and get real looking macro shots. with 24-70 and 70-200 you can capture really good close-ups, but not macro. You could crop the photos in post to get similar looking results, for sure, but that's not the same. Macro lens like this allows you to get really close and still be able to focus
@PavSZ thank you for your answer. What I take from it is that even though I could take a picture of, let's say, a flower, with the 24-70 or 70-200 and frame it just as close, whether by zooming in, or cropping in post, because it's not a macro lens that allows me to take the picture from a really close distance, then, the end result of the picture, in this case a flower, will not have all the miniscule details of the flower itself, that you do get with a macro lens, because of the fact that you are super close to the object when you take the picture. I guess that is the difference, if I understood you correctly. Thank you 👍
I did say in my video that it is a very versatile lens few times and there is several samples focusing to infinity. It is just a normal 90mm prime lens until you go close with it
@@preformingmonkey I never bough a macro lens before because I couldn't justify the price (whatever the price the lens would be) for occasional close-up use .... I don't know how it works with other macro lenses but this does 'normal' and macro - win win
Most modern macro lenses can focus to infinity check before you buy, however if you are using a bellows or extension tubes, on any lens, you take away the ability to focus to infinity.
preformingmonkey - you may need a larger aperture for lowlight situations hand held or additional bokeh when your main subject is not really close. However, if you use your lenses stopped down all of the time, then macro for everything works (but at some focal lengths they can be expensive).
Why the silly title. It does not have to be the best prime ever nor that makes it hype. It is a fantastic lens and that is fine. I hate dumb youtube titles
Sorry you don't like it. I don't like it either but as Dan M said we all have to do it. I spend 3-4 days on average to produce a video like this. It takes a lot of time, effort and stress. If I just called it Sony 90mm f2.8 Macro , chances are that significantly smaller amount of people would click on it as there is A LOT of videos about 90mm lens out there already and less people click on it and engage with it, less RUclips recommends it to others and less it is visible in the search results. I need to do this to help grow this channel. It is truly soul destroying when I put heart and soul into making content and then nothing happens. Thanks for watching anyway and once again sorry. Pav
@@PavSZ Sorry, I did not see your answer befor now. I have done Macro Photography since 1980, so I do now a little about Macro Photography, first you do not need autofocus for Macro shooting, i fact it is much easier with manual focusing, second the stabilizer in the Sony 90mm makes it more vulnerable and more complex Lens design, so a manual only focus Macro Lens will always be the best choice for me. As far as I know at 1:1 the stabilizer system in the Sony 90mm only gives half a stop !!! So that system are a waste ! If you are lucky you get a good Lens sample, if you are unlucky you may get a bad sample of the Lens which many have tried ! I will not recommend this Lens for serious Photographers for Macro shooting.

I like your style as well as your content content.👍
Glad to hear it! Thank you very much!
This sounds like a great lense for product photography
For small products for sure but closer you get shallower the depth of field is
This is a great review!
thank you!
Do you experience any ‘movement’ in the lens? Particularly at close focus in manual? A slight clunk… not always there and disappears when OIS is switched off.
not personally but it might be in lens stabilisation working
Would this lens be suitable for street photography?…..looking for something that can handle macro and street as those are my main two interests when shooting. Thanks.
yes, I can't see why not. The only thing to watch for is that the auto focus needs to be in the ball park area for it to work quick. It has got very loooooooong way to travel from macro to infinity and it will sometimes hunt if you change the focal plane from super close to far away often.
Check out the other two options for Sony-E as well:
Sigma 105mm f2.8 Macro: ruclips.net/video/FVnpQa7QsdY/видео.html
Sony 50mm f2.8 Macro: ruclips.net/video/FPf_1DBqZxw/видео.html
I haven't tried Laowa lens yet but I do have both Sony and Sigma lenses. Right now I use Sony just a bit more for that manual focus switch
Great video. I take pictures of food. Can I use this lens handheld without a tripod?
Absolutely! - you will always need more light when going macro anyway
@@PavSZ thanks. I usually take these food pictures on a cruise ship in their dining so carrying a tripod and setting up one is not possible
Do you suggest buying a light to attach to my camera or boost up the ISO to possibly somewhere between 800 to 3200?
@@NLMusique I don't think macro lens is the best for generic food photography all together. Great for going in super close to focus on one part of the dish but may be not the best for shooting full plates etc.
It will be ok, just not the most versatile.
I've been shooting food professionally for nearly 20 years with 50mm and only recently with 24-105. With that I can get more of the food in the shot and go super close if I need to.
In regards to lights - I've been using a lot just a single portable LED video light and placing it on the table, next to the food, pointing it up, then using a big white card held just above to bounce the light back.
Pretty much all these were shot like that:
instagram.com/joannesdinner/
@@PavSZ thanks. Yes, I like to see a full plate of food and not zoom all the way in.
I'm using the Sony a6400. Not sure if the 50mm can focus that close
The only lens I can focus very close is my Sony Zeiss 24 mm f1. 8. Focal distance is 6.3 inch
From what you say as you take food photography for over 20 years, it doesn't look like the macro lens would benefits me at all
Maybe if I upgrade from a Sony a6400 to a6600 would benefit me more since the a6600 has IBIS?
Any thoughts?
Both the a6400 and the Sony Zeiss 24mm are not stabilized
@@PavSZ hey Pav, would you now use your Tamron 28-200 instead of the Sony 24-105 for food photography?
hey Pav, i'm making infrared photography with my fullspectrum camera and i'd like to know if this 90mm got some hotspot in this case ? thanks a lot ! =)
sorry but I have no experience in this filed. I wouldn't be able to tell you
@@PavSZ ok, no problem :)
Great... FELICITACIONES DESDE ARGENTINA...
thanks
and the Lawoa 65 2x1 Macro?
but it is only for APS-C cameras and fully manual. Although I do like manual focusing, sometimes (like portrait work) I prefer to autofocus - a bit quicker
Great review! The 90 is a great investment.
It really is!
Is ti better than Canon RF 100/2.8 Macro?
for Sony cameras it is 100% better
Hello! Can I use this lens with Sony a6400 to get good macro photography?
Yes, absolutely
Beautiful lens! Thanks 🙏
Mine had an incredibly loud noise, like a motor inside rumbling that I could hear away from the camera. Distractingly bad. I sent it back.
bad luck. very unusual
is good for unboxing videos?
possibly
Is this lens good for jewelry model photography?
yes but it would be pretty much any zoom too. This is a macro lens with which you can get super close to your subject with and getting this close you certainly would not see a model anymore
Thanks for vid)
Welcome! Thanks for watching!
What a great video!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you
So this lens or Fuji 80mm macro?
This is a Sony-E mount lens for Sony cameras, how can you compare it to Fuji lens?
@@PavSZ I use all three platforms, fuji lenses are usually smaller and lighter. But have compromises.. Was hoping maybe you had some knowledge on both lenses.
@@Las_cacas Sorry, i never had a chance to use Fuji macro lens before
Hi, I have a question, what's the difference between taking a picture of a quarter with a 1:1 macro lens, or a zoom lens, zoomed to make the quarter fit the screen to the same size as the 1:1 ratio macro lens?
Thank you 👍
@@sharky4ubaby that's right

could i use this in my d850 nikon? with some adapter ring? thanks!
I don't think so
Nice work!!!
I own this lens, is great! I think your camera is much to close to you, your head is out of frame..
what's the maximum distance you can focus ? I have read macro lenses can't focus to infinity?
I did say in my video that it is a very versatile lens few times and there is several samples focusing to infinity. It is just a normal 90mm prime lens until you go close with it
@@PavSZ surely there must be some drawbacks though? Otherwise, why not just buy macro lenses for everything??
It got you to click. That's the whole point. Have to compete with all the trash out there, at least this guy produces good content
Pav
Thanks you to day I'm GO OT bay
have you seen my newer review of this lens? ruclips.net/video/37Wmp22Nmxk/видео.html
sometimes i hear a bit of arnold schwarzenegger in there :P
wrong country, wrong accent, sorry to disappoint
HYPE ! But the Sony 135mm 1.8 GM may be the best ever prime !
maybe but can you take a macro photo with 135mm? 😉
Love this damn fuc yous ring ❤️
thanks
