Is there any manual focus lag with the Sigma compared to the Sony?

The Bokeh difference is all down to the focal length. However most macro photographers want the largest depth of field, otherwise you are just photographing an insects eye. If you want a portrait lens buy a portrait lens.

      it's very similar.
Focus travel on macro lenses is very long so they will never be suitable or great at autofocusing at macro magnifications. Manual is the only reliable way to do it.
Shooting portrait or any other non macro style of photography, Sigma is marginally quicker. Newer lens

Going into proper macro magnifications you will have to close the aperture as DOF will be crazy shallow. This will also most likely require a tripod. If it is bright enough and you can crank up ISO/Shutter speed than the lack of IS on Sigma is not a deal breaker

Ive been reading lots of reviews of this lens. I will be using this lens strictly for close up insect macro. So naturally many of the features discussed don't matter to me. I generally shoot in manual and move the camera back and forth to fine tune focus depth. I also NEVER shoot at F/2.8. Min is F/8 for more DOF. Everyone compares the sharpness to the Sony at F/2.8. I need to know how it compares at F/8. Maybe the Sony surpasses it? Did you do any sharpness comparisons at higher apertures? btw- keep up the great work on your videos.

it's good for video work but you can forget AF - like with all macro lenses the focus travel from infinity to minimal focusing distance is too long.
Out of these two, Sony is a better choice as the manual focusing is linear.

2 years later and I still love the Sigma Macro, now using it on the A7RV I do notice problems with the Insect eye AF. It finds the eye/body but is focusing rapidly back and forth so when burst shooting half the images are blurry. I went back to this video to check AF performance and you said they're both similar so I'm just hoping for a Mark 2 on the Sony or Sigma that will hopefully fix this.

actually I had a 90mm, I have sold it and ordered the sigma 105mm.
