- Our 2013 Lexus GS350 has finally hit 100k miles and it's now time to service the cooling system. In this video I show you how I changed the coolant in our GS350. If you have a Lexus RC350 or IS350, then this video might be helpful, because all of those cars share the same engine that is in my GS350. Changing the coolant in my GS350 is pretty easy, and took me less than 1 hour to do. Let me show you.

@@DIYDanCars well, it's a tool you used that wasn't listed.. was kind of being sarcastic although it stuck out the most to me because I don't have one and I really need one for my rc.. I'm thinking of going with a portable just to get it up a couple feet, otherwise it will be headed to a shop :/

@@Pygmara lol! No worries! Sometimes it's a bit hard to detect sarcasm over the internet. If there was an amazon affiliate link for my lift, then I would definitely add it! However, it's not needed in order to do this job, but does make life a lot easier!
@@DIYDanCars I'm not sure about your GS, but there's no way I could ever do that on my RC without some sort of lift. The lift point is in the middle of the axles basically and it's hard to determine where to even try to put jack stands.. definitely have portable quick Jack's on my wishlist. Would love a 2 post but that's too much for all I'd use it...
My brother just asked me to do his once the dealership quoted him a price to change his coolant. Once I saw the petcock location schematic, I knew I picked the right video.

I see that MR2 over there and that brought me a blast to the past. That was very first Toyota and I've basically life long owner since then. A stint with Honda when I was selling their cars. But forever and always with Toyota and Lexus. Thanks for the video

Thanks for the video! You made it look simple. Wondering if using a venturi coolant refiller system would avoid the long process of burping and topping off the coolant. The refiller kit would suck all the air out of the system then sucks in the coolant to filled the void. Resulting in no air in the system.

You can drain the reservoir by filling one of those small hoses with water, put a thumb over the drain end, and then insert the high end in the reservoir. Key is to keep the discharge end lower than the reservoir.

Didn't go quite as planning on 2018.....radiator and tank drained just over 1 gallon. When I was filling up from radiator cap, the tank filled up to the top and no more coolant fit (I put 1 gallon). After test drive everything is normal, but tank is still filled to top (it was less before). I did set heat to high and drove for about 15 min, nothing changed

Thanks for posting this, especially where that engine petcock is, the Alldata diagram isn't that specific. Only thing I would do different is to use the Toyota Super Long Life coolant, Toyota may engineer the related engine component materials for that specific formula, but I guess Zerex Asian Red is close enough and is certainly cheaper.
No problem and happy to help! I don't want to get into a debate about coolant, but I would only recommend you read the chemical properties of both Toyota Super Long Life and Zerex Asian Vehicle. You might be surprised by what you find. As you probably already know, Toyota uses a vendor to make their coolant for them.

Hi Dan. Glad you're back doing 4GS videos because mine is due for this! I have one question that you didn't address in the video: does the car have to be level while doing this service? I'm wondering if I have to use four jack stands or if just ramps would be fine.
Hi William, I just saw your comment. Sorry about that. It's preferred that its level or the front end is in the air, but its not necessary. If the rear of the car is higher than the front, then it will probably take a while to bleed or there will be some trapped air in the system. Either have the car level or have the front end raised. Hope this helps.

How do I change the coolant on a Lexus Nx 300.
That old coolant looks VERY clean.
It may "look" clean, but coolant starts to break down and turn acidic overtime. This leads to general corrosion of your liners, cylinder blocks and heads, and in the waterways and hoses. I highly recommend you follow the service interval that Lexus has outlined in your owner's manual.
@@DIYDanCars Agreed. I'm just surprised at how clean that is for 100k miles. Mine never looks that clean.
So the drain on the drivers side is basically where indicated however a bit lower then it seems in the diagram and close to the engine. It is not viable from the top (you can only reach and tuch it with your hand) of the engine but it is from bellow the engine. I have a rear wheel drive car and maybe with two people I could get to it from above with someone bellow guiding me to the right spot. Anyway I did not drain that side as it's so difficult to reach.
Thanks for the video. I have a 2008 GS350 and I'm guessing the process should be similar. Do you happen to know if 2008 GS350 also has the 'self burping' cooling system? and I'm guessing there is no bleeder valve in these cars?

Use the reservoir to add additional coolant.

Thanks! My shop manual lets me know if the cooling system is self burping. Yes. Your 2010 RX350 should be the same.

Yes. A 2014 GS350 will be the same.
Approximately how much fluid came outta the engine block? I don't have a lift, so I was considering just draining the radiator. Our '13 GS350 F Sport is at 83K. Love this car. Thanks in advance Dan.
It was enough where I would drain it from the block. If I had to guess, probably a full gallon came out of the block.

Your RC350 has the same engine as my GS350. You're good to go. Just make sure you feel heat coming out of the vents when you're burping the system.

@@kemalozgur3977 Mine is a 2GR FSE. The 2GR FKS was introduced in 2015 for the GS350. As far as I know all 2GR family of engines have self burping cooling systems.
@@DIYDanCars 2GR FE requires a special procedure. It's quite involved and lengthy process. I don't know how self burping works. Must have a special valve or something but doubt it.

My 2015 GS only has 45k miles so no need to change the coolant yet. However, I just did my first coolant change on my wife’s 2006 Toyota Sequoia and the process is virtually the same. The only thing I didn’t do was drain the block. Oops…will do that next time.
Spray nozzle also works great on bleeding your brakes, makes it simple one person job.
The water pump will pump and mix everything through the system, so it's not necessary to drain the block. You'll just want to drain and fill the radiator more often if you don't drain the block.
Pretty sure you're supposed to turn off the air circulation inside the car to the setting that pull air from the outside of the car.
It doesn't matter! The reason why we turn on the heat is to fill the heater core with coolant. This happens regardless if you're pulling air from the outside or from inside the car.

My 2018 GS350 is at the low level should I fill it up or do a drain?
Has it had the 100k coolant service? If not, I would recommend changing it. It's very easy to do if you follow my step by step instructional video.

I just bought the same car but a 2014, I bought it Wednesday in a dealer and took it to the Lexus dealership because it had a recall on the fuel pump so it’s should be ready by today, and the alarm was going off like every 20 minutes, give me your opinion in this car, it has 153k, u think this car with this miles is reliable? I can't give an answer specifically on your car because I don't know the history, but what I can say is our car has been absolutely flawless during our ownership so far. My GS350 just turned 120k miles and we haven't had to do anything to it other than regular fluid changes. Congrats on the new ride!

I have no idea. I don't own an IS250 and it has a completely different drivetrain than my GS350.
is this considered a full flush?? a lot of people say not to mix OEM coolant with this zerex coolant any thoughts? the amazon reviews for the zero show someone mixed them and it gelled up
No. This is a drain and fill. Yes, gelling can occur if you mix unlike coolant types!!! Toyota Super Long Life coolant and Zerex Asian formula coolant are the same formula so I don't know how gelling can occur! If you are worried about gelling, then buy the OEM stuff. So would you say 3 of those jugs would be enough for one service? I'm not sure how many jugs to buy for my 14 is 350.
my 2013 GS-350 has an engine oil level low warning and the oil level on the dipstick is at the full level. Have you seen this issue before? It appears that the sensor is faulty and the oil normal is normal. Any suggestions? Thanks,
If the oil reads full on the dipstick, then the oil level sensor must be bad.
@@DIYDanCars Thanks. I took the car to the dealer, apparently a rodent chewed on a wiring harness. They can repair the harness without replacing it.

Sure that's fine, but if you have debris in the system, then you likely have bigger problems to worry about.
What about es350
It should be very similar since it uses the same engine as my GS.
Why not just flush it using the radiator hose?

I stepped down from a ls 460 to a gs 350 a couple years ago for a sportier drive but have to admit I miss the v 8 and ride on the highway.

You need to start using oem fluids
Why? Do you think Toyota makes their own coolant in house? No, they don't. It's outsource from a supplier where it is put in a pretty bottle that says "Lexus" so they can charge you more.
Do yourself a favour, ditch those beauty covers and let those wire harnesses and rubber hoses live longer.

Dan, the videos are interesting.... but all the loud tire screeching is too much for me.... I got tired of Scotty and all his- rev up your engine screeching and noise - . Said goodbye to him. Cause, if i want loud music or sounds, I can turn it up at my end.
