- In this video I show you what steps I took in order to change the spark plugs in my wife's 2013 Lexus GS350 AWD. This video should also be helpful for all owners who own a IS350 or RC350 since both of these cars have the same engine found in my GS350. Changing the sparks yourself can save you between $350-$400 and this service can be performed in under an hour. Let me show you.
The spark plugs I used can be found here. I have used both part numbers without any problems on my 13' GS350.

Link to the spark plugs doesn't work for me. Can you send me the link?
Is changing sort plug on the IS300 the same as is350
Thanks for the video Dan! Reputable mechanics in my area wanted between 250 and 280 for this service, and the dealer quoted around 350. The OEM plugs cost less than 60 bucks, so even if you don't have the tools, you can buy them and do this job yourself and still come out ahead. This is definitely worth to DIY for all except the most mechanically challenged persons.
No problem!
I dont know how to diy. Cant trust mechanics with my new baby rc350. They dont put shots back in the right place when removing it. A mech was working on a customer’s car at my friend’s shop. He yanks the plastic part from the engine and broke it. I said “u broke it”. He said he does not care lol
Much easier to access the sparkplugs on this longitudinally mounted V6 engine with the GS. Doing this on a transverse mounted V6 like an ES 350 or RX 350 is a PITA.
Absolutely! My buddy has an RX and it sucks doing the spark plugs on that car!
Dan Thank you So much..... I changed the spark plugs myself today and you saved me well over $500 just for the Labor. Thanks a Million........💯💯💯💯💯
Good to hear and no problem!
Easier to do this job on these car than it is on a 2012 Ford Fusion V6 lol. You did a great job explaining every step in detail and didn’t miss anything. I had this job done in just a lil over an hour. Thank you very much for the good content!
Thanks for the vid. saved me $880. Dealer quoted $950. Got the plugs from parts store for $62.👍🏾🔥
Only because the book method is to remove the intake manifold to safely perform the service
I changed the plugs on my 2015 GS350 today because of this video. Thanks again!
Thanks for the awesome video. I managed to change my own spark plugs within 1 hour and saved $300 from doing it at dealership
Thank you for the video, it was very helpful. Just a note id make is that the original OEM plugs (at least in my owners manual and engine) are the FK20HBR11 denso iridium long life plugs which come pre-gapped at the factory spec. I ordered the alternative IKBH20TT that you used in the video, and found out that the gap is actually at .040, smaller than what it should be and since i imagine that the non-long life plugs would have to be replaced even sooner than the 60k mile recommended service interval i decided to spend the extra money on the OEM FK20HBR11 that came with my car. I love your series! Hope to possibly see one with the coolant in the future as that will need to be done on mine soon.
John, both plugs are "long life" and rated for 100k miles. Both IKBH20TT and the more expensive FK20HBR11 are just about identical. They share the same resistance, heat range, electrode material (iridium), and longevity (both 100k mile plugs). Gap on IKBH20TT is .039" and gap on FK20HBR11 .043" -- I took these specifications right from Denso's website. I have almost 40k on my spark plugs since this video and the car runs perfectly. Denso is a parent company of Toyota and if they feel IKBH20TT can be used in the GS350 then I have no worries, but definitely use what you feel comfortable with. I decided to save the $30 and go with IKBH20TT.
Thank you! Just used your video to change the spark plugs on my 2011 is350! Easy video to follow! On to my next DIY!
Hey Dan, I just bought this Lexus from my brother and I want to say that a good 60% of that decision was made thanks to your videos on you working on your wife's car. I will be more confident taking care of the the car thanks to you! I owe you a beer, or set of spark-plugs lol.
Happy to help and enjoy the new ride!
14 IS350 done! Thank you!
It is 2022. In Little Elm Texas, a car shop is wanting $791.38 for changing the spark plugs to my 2013 Lexus GS 350. Looking around and probably going to do it myself. Thanks for this video.
Great video. I got a all the tools. I just ordered the spark plugs. I'll be cleaning the throttle body butterfly too while I'm there. 👍
I just did this today, and thanks to you, the steps are clear, and this video made it easy . Thanks a lot!
hey bro, i wanna do this so bad to my rc350 cuz it jus hit 80k miles. how do you store all the bolts and not get confused with which bolt goes where?
@samperry2517 do you mean for the coil packs? Or for the side where the wire harness is?
Cool packs have same size bolts. What ever you take from the side that is attaching the harness to the block, you need to mark them somehow if you can't remember.
Hi Dan just wanted to say thank you for the vid. I had some stumbles but with your help I got this done today. No engine lights so I think we're all good!
IMO the driver's side plugs were way harder to deal with as they were tucked into some tight spots.
Happy to help! And nice job on getting this done!
Dan your videos are excellent get to the point and task at hand without filling the video with “Fluff” which some narrators use to heat themselves speak!
That NO GAP is not always true. You should still at least check the gap out of the box. Electrode tips can get bounces around during shipping. As they say trust but verify....
Another self taught tip is after you install the plug. Put the plug that was removed into the same box and label with the cylinder number. After all the plugs are installed you should have same number of old plugs. The concept of this is to review the plugs even if not right away. You can compare against burn charts and if there are any excessively abnormal plugs you can isolate the cylinder for future monitoring...
That looks really easy. I had to change the plugs on my RX and the other 3 plugs were behind the engine. You couldn't get access to them.
Hello
Can you can shows US how to change the fuel filter lexus gs 350 2013 and thank you for this
Thanks for the suggestion. I will look into doing this.
Thanks for the video. That nut on the driver side front coil pack was the only problem one to get to.
Dan love your videos. Could you do one where you replace the brake fluid then blead the brakes. And if it's not too much trouble take the front bumper cover off. I have to replace the front grille on my GS350. Thanks for producing and sharing the videos.
Changed mine out this weekend. Easy enough, video explains it well. I’m pumped, just saved myself $600. 12 hours later, CEL lights up, I get an EVAP code (P0411) and my alternator just took a dump (battery dead as a result). My guess is that I may have crimped/pushed/pinched a wire(s) when doing the change. Can’t be coincidence that I’ve never had a single issue with this car, then the day after I do the change this happens. Anyone else have this issue? DIY Dan..what say you?
Was it just the alternator?
Great video! I used it today. The one bolt on the first power pack on the driver’s side was a pain in the butt like you said. Everything else was pretty simple.
If that's pain in the butt imagine if you have to replace spark plugs on Toyota FWD V6
Thanks for the vid! Same process for the Lexus Rc350! That wiring harness grommet @1:34 was impossible to tug out from the intake manifold. Was there a particular way you pulled it out? I couldn’t for the life of me get it to pop out. Somehow the zip tie popped off and it saved me a lot of grief. Thinking about just getting a regular zip tie and zip it up instead of using that thing again.
Great Video!! Question?, Why did you not use a torque wrench when installing the Spark Plugs?
I did. I just didn't film it.
Nice DYI! When I saw that duck tape I screamed lol.. They make a socket wrench with a magnet and one that won't back off even with the extension. Anyhow great vid thumbs up!!
Thanks! Sometimes you gotta work with what ya got! :)
thanks for the video. Did you notice need to change the coil pack gaskets? the mechanics that i asked told me they do need to be changed. But i am sure its because they want to add and extra 50 to do this. I am hoping this video will help me with my 2013 GS 450 h.
Mine were fine so I didn't change them.
Hi Dan, thanks for your video! How many miles on your car to change the spark plugs. I've 2015 GS350 with ~80000 miles on it. I feel like it is about the time to change the plugs.
Lexus recommends changing the spark plugs every 60k miles.
DIY Dan hey Dan, thanks for your reply. I got mine in 28000miles as CPO and then it’s about the time to change now.thanks!
Blow compressed air into spark plug hole before removing plug in case debris is in there.
@MK bro you didn’t have to go there 🤣💀
Just did tune-up using your video. Thanks bro!
You should put the removed bolts away from the holes near the hood latch, lest they fall down in there, and have a magnet wand handy.
An extra inch of space on the drivers side is all I ask! Would make this so much easier to maneuver around.
I hear ya!
Awesome vid Dan, liked and subbed. I have the 2013 non F sport version, and referenced your videos for the brake pad and oil changes. Don't have a lift, so I am still thinking of ways to lift the car high enough and level enough to do the diff fluid change.
Are you worried about the so called "life time" transmission oil? I would definitely change it before 100k, but it seems like they went out of the way to make that hard to do. It would be great if you did a video on it when you get a chance.
Thanks Ethan! In my opinion there is no such thing as "lifetime". I plan on dropping the pan and changing the fluid and filter once the car reaches between 60k-70k miles and will do it every 60k miles after that. Hope this helps.
Awesome video. At 1st this looked a daunting DIY, with the intake manifold on top of the engine, but this video helped allay my fear. Thanks much.
No problem!
Another Great video as usual, but don’t you need an anti seize on your spark plugs ? Or it’s not required? Thanks again
No! Lexus doesn't recommend anti-seize on the spark plug threads per their shop manual. Adding anti-seize to spark plug threads actually lubricates the threads, causing you to over-tighten the spark plugs. Over-tightening causes the metal shell to distort and break the seal between the shell and the porcelain center. This can cause misfires. Also, most spark plugs have either a zinc or nickel plating that prevents the threads from seizing in the cylinder head. That’s different from decades ago when spark plugs didn’t have any coating and could seize in the cylinder head, making removal tough.
@@costantineyoussif6679 Hi Constantine, I don't under the question. "Are these looks normal?" What do you mean by that? If you can provide a little more clarity I can try and answer your question.
@@DIYDanCars FYI spark plugs was bought from eBay from Lexus authorized dealer around $80 for set of 6 and i took them out less than 8 month !!!!! Since I started getting misfire and was so curious to see how the spark plugs looks like
@@DIYDanCars I posted a link where I can show you the spark plugs how they look like but it seems like RUclips delete it
Thank you for making this video Dans the man
Happy to help!
Hi Dan, really appreciate your gs videos! Could you also make an video on how to adjust the gs headlights high or low? Thanks in advance!
Thanks for the diy videos! I also own a 2013 awd gs 350 with about 67k miles. I just now notice the clacking sound in the engine bay (with the hood up)...louder especially on the passenger side. Does yours make the clacking sound too? Is that normal? A mechanic at Lexus dealer said that the sound is due to the direct and port injection and the high pressure fuel pump, but I like to hear your opinion about it! Thanks again for the videos...very helpful!
Yes, your Lexus mechanic is right, this is the nature of a DI engine ("clacking sound").
Oh ok thanks! Also, I thought the Denso 4705 (IKBH20TT) were the oem so I ordered those from my local AutoZone, but the old ones were actually the Denso 3473 (FK20HBR11). They are both said to fit the 2013 GS 350, but the 4705 is gapped at 0.040in and the 3473 is gapped at 0.044in. The 4705 is almost half the price of the 3473 though. Do you know why the difference in prices and gaps?
I'm using the 4705's as well. I didn't want to spend the double the cost on a "long life" plug when Lexus recommends the spark plugs be changed every 60k miles. Both the 4705 and 3473 can be used in a GS350. The only difference between the two is the 3473 is marketed as a "long life" plug.
Dan I noticed your car rims and calipers are all clean what brakes pads do you use because it can't be genuine Lexus because I use on my ls and dust is a pain
I use Power Stop ceramic brake pads. I put a link to the exact pads I used in my how to change the brake pads and rotors video. So far I have like the Power Stop pads and they seem to have cut down on the dust significantly.
Hi Dan thanks for making it so simple!
If a few of my spark plugs are oily does that mean I might need to change the spark plug tubes (gasket valve cover)
Also do you recommend changing the PCV valve? Thanks in advance
Hi Isai, did you notice oil pooling around the spark plugs when you went to removed them? If so, then it sounds like you will need valve cover gaskets soon. How many miles are on your car? We're at 100k and so far I haven't noticed any oil pooling around the spark plugs. Sure, if you want to go the extra mile and it won't hurt to change the PCV if your car has got some miles on it.
DIY Dan the first spark plug on the driver side was the only one oily so just changed them all + pcv valve about 100k . Thanks again, all the best!
Hi Dan
Nice work
Have you done the cleaning the intake manifold and change rubber seal. Also mine is 2005 GS and guess need to change the spark plugs rubber seal too. Any video you done on this .
Appreciate your help.
Hello, I have a 2013 GS350 RWD with 90k miles on it. Do you recommend changing the spark plus now?
You're past due for this service. Lexus recommends they be changed every 60k.
I was thinking of making a video for my 2011 GS 350 but it is quite identical. Like they dropped the same engine in a new body, I guess you don't change a good thing! I also cleaned the TB.
Thanks Dan for another helpful video!
Thanks buddy and no problem!
HIT THAT LIKE BUTTON THIS CHANNEL IS GOLD
Thanks for your videos Dan! Did front brakes/rotors and spark plugs! Great help!
No problem and happy to help!
What’s the actual torque specs for denso I called multiple dealer and I got different answers some says 13ft lb and some says 15ft lb , and now yiu saying 23ft lb ? Where can I find the correct torque specs ?
Correct is 13ft on spark plugs and 7ft on coils
Just wanted to thank you for this.
I don't get this often, but its much appreciated! I'm glad the video was helpful to you!
Nice video, thanks Dan!
Thank you! Happy to help!
Hi Dan, where did you get info on 23lb torque? Thanks
Are ngk plugs good also what gap do you set them at?
My Lexus dealer quoted me $2,278.00 for the 60K mile service today for my 2015 GS 350. The most pricey part of the service they said was the replacement of the spark plugs ($800-900). WTF! I think I’m done with the dealer.
Holy cow! What did the "60k mile service" all include for $2,278?! Changing the spark plugs on a GS350 is pretty easy and not time consuming at all. Go to an independent garage for the service. It will be 1/4 of that price.
@@DIYDanCarsReplace: Brake fluid cabin air filter, engine oil and filter, rotate tires, spark plugs, measure brake pads and rotors.
Inspect: Drive axle boots, drive belts, exhaust system, fuel tank and lines, read diff fluid, suspension ball joints, steering linkage, engine coolant, transmission, rack and pinion assembly.
I might have missed a few but that’s pretty much the bulk of it. I’m with you on the independent mechanic.
Great videos by the way! Thanks.
Ask, how many hours are you charging me for the plug change and how much are you charging per hour?
i just got quoted $2,700 for same service. Just bought my 2015 GS350 F-Sport at 77k miles.
It just hit and went saying I wanted all the fluids changed , brake coolant differential trans + spark plugs and they recommended 60,000 mile service.
The minimum would’ve been $2,700, “value” $2,980, premium $3,250 lmao. Insanity
@@arjunt973 Wow! I might need to open my own shop if people are willing to spend that much for a few hours of work. Crazy times!
My best advise is to find a good independent mechanic because they will be much, much cheaper than the dealer.
I have a 2008 gs 350 with 160k miles and decided to change the spark plugs. I torqued them to 15-17 ft lb. After i started the car there is a huge knocking noise from the engine. No check engine lights or anything. I even test drove it for 5 minutes but the knocking sound didnt go. I removed the engine cover to see where the knocking noise is coming from and its from the spark plugs itself on both sides. Any help on this? I will try to remove them and install them back in once again but if this happens again?
Did you use the wrong spark plugs? Did you verify they fit your make and model? That's the only thing I can think of.
Hi Dan, did you unplug the battery when you change these sparks plugs? Thanks for the video
My battery was connected while I performed this service. No problem! Happy to help!
Thanks Dan
BTW did you ever clean the throttle bodies of GS? Dealer recommended my 2014 at 70k miles for cleaning. Hopefully you do video for it. Thanks
Is that the factory specs on tightening the spark plugs 23 pounds?
Nice video Dan
Hi Dan
Did you use the Denso 3473 or 4705 I notice the gap is different
love the video
Hi Michael, I put a link to all of the parts I used in the description. I also included the part numbers to the spark plugs that I used at the beginning of this video. Good luck!
So on the driver side I ripped the small white and green wires from the clip near the front coil now I dont know if green is top or white is bottom the front pack
Hello Dan great video. will this process be the same for a 2014 IS350? Thanks.
Yep. The IS350 and GS350 share the same engine.
I have the same 2013 GS350. I installed the same spark plugs but when I started my car, it started shaking. What do you think is the problem?
My guess is one or more coil packs are unplugged. Double check that all of the connections are clicked into place.
Most people online say torque the spark plugs to 13ft/lbs. Isn't 23ft/lbs way too much?
I torqued mine to 23ft/lbs, but feel free to do what ever you want.
Do you need to gap the new spark plugs or just put them in as is?
If you bought the same spark plugs that I did then you shouldn't have to gap them at all because they already come pre-gapped.
@@DIYDanCars Denso FK20HBR11 I bought these. For some reason they’re pre-gapped to .40
You’re saying in other comments that yours came pre-gapped to .43?
Are the position of coil packs on the driver's side similar to an is250? If so I bought intake gaskets for no reason😂
Dan, love your videos. Liked and sub'd. I have a 2014 GS350 AWD. I'm curious about your choice in spark plugs. Lexus number is 90919-01249 which corresponds to Denso 3473. Denso website lists
Denso 4705 = Denso Iridium TT and Denso 3473 = Denso Iridium Long Life (SIP). Curious as to why you chose the 4705 over the 3473 and what the differences are?
The 4705 are cheaper, but don't come pre-gapped correctly and would need to be replaced sooner than 60k for best performance is what i presume. I recommend the 3473 Denso plugs.
Hi Dan,
do you have to use a spark plug socket? what is preventing the sparkplug once its loosened from not coming out? does your socket have some sort of magnet or friction sufrface to ensure the spark plug doesn't slip fro mthe socket face?
thx
You need something to hold the spark plug while you pull it out. A spark plug socket has padding inside that grips the plug and prevents it from falling out.
Hi Dan, is this the same procedure for an 09 GS350 AWD?
Hey partner on the passenger side i came across a hose am not sure if it’s to connect to something or or not
Hey Dan, @1:32 you pulled the wiring harness. On my Rc350, it looks like the wiring harness is zip-tied to my manifold. Do I still pull it out or cut the zip tie? Thanks !!
Hi Elliot, my wiring harness was held in by a grommet on the intake manifold. I simply gave it a tug around the grommet area and it came undone. I didn't have to cut the zip tie.
Hi did you have to add anti-seize compound on those new spark plugs?
No.
Do you know where the pcv valve is??
Stubborn electrical connectors, if you have some electrical conmector cleaner handy.... spray it down and try again. Dust and gunk gets trapped under tabs. And the cleaner is of course safe for "connectors"
Hello, what else did you do besides the spark plugs as part of the 60K miles service?
I think Lexus also recommends an oil change, cabin filter, and air filter at 60k.
Ok thanks
Do you know if that's the same procedure for a 2015 lexus gs350 f sport thanks on advance
Yep, should be the same since both cars share the same engine.
Excellent video, thank you, it will help me a lot when I need to change mine. This seems easier than in my previous car, a Nissan Maxima. That said, I personally like to put some dielectric grease on the inside coil boots, or a tiny bit of anti seize cpd on the new spark plugs threads since we have long life pieces.
William Ha pretty sure new plugs have a coating on them now for that
Hi Dan I'm from Australia trying to buy spark plugs for my 2013 gs450h is impossible to find only Lexus hold them they want 300+ do you know where I can buy these spark plugs you'd be saving me a bunch. Cheers
Your GS450h uses the same spark plugs as the GS350. Both cars share the same 3.5L V6.
@@DIYDanCars can I ask what would be the best spark plugs to use
@@DIYDanCars would you know of any company's that may send to Australia. Amazon seem to only have four plugs left
Is it vital that you use a torque wrench to tighten the plugs? Can I just hand tighten?
No. Just be smart when you tighten them. Don't use a ratchet with a huge amount of leverage, otherwise you could run the risk of stripping out the spark plug threads if you over-tighten it.
DIY Dan perfect. Thank you so much!
No problem!
My rule is tighten with the ratchet until you feel some resistance, then give it another wuarter turn and no more to lock down.
Hi
What is the torque to tighten up in kg Please
Life saver! Thank you
Thanks Dan. Is it red MR2 first gen have have on back ground?
No problem! Yes, that is my 85' MR2 that you see.
What is the spark plug socket size?
Where’d you get your torque wrench? I like it!😂
Just kidding, but great video, very informative
Thanks! Happy to help!
I can't remember if I showed the torque wrench or not in this video, but it's a 30 year old craftsman torque wrench that has served me very well. :)
Thank you for this vid.
hi there i have a gs350 2011, im driving 40 to 60 an hour and the rpm stay at 2 is that normal? thanks
Hi Joy, I don't have a 2011 and that is a different generation of GS from mine, so I couldn't tell you if thats normal or not. Sorry! There is a section on ClubLexus that is specific to your generation GS and they have some good people on there that could help you out. Link below. Good luck! www.clublexus.com/forums/
Do I need to replace any of gaskets when doing this?
No.
Excellent video
Thank you Dan
No problem, Ryan! I like to help GS owners save themselves from the tyranny of the "stealership".
My God this video makes me miss all my Honda four cylinder cars.
IMO its really not that bad to do.
Do you disconnect the battery first ?
No.
Does this apply for the is250 aswell..
No, IS250 uses a different engine. Sorry!
Good stuff
What wheels are these
Thank you so much 👍🏻
Another super useful video Dan...much appreciated! I’d love to see how you replace a PCV valve. I’m just about due for a 60K service and the spark plugs and pcv valve seem the most demanding.
Much easier than the 2011 Lexus is250 awd. Have to remove the plenum
Thanks for sharing. It sounds like a pain in the butt to do this job on a IS250.
good work
Thanks!
Lexus dealer quoted $800 for this. Bought the plugs from them for $120
Great video! Hope to see more
I pounded my foot 24 times. Did I overdo it?
The 250 requires intake to come off to change the drivers side plugs. Gerr!
Oh man that sucks! Just think about all those sweet benjamins you will be saving though... :)
@@DIYDanCars yea, well 1 its the wifes car and she doesn't appreciate auto repair at all. 2. The nuts and bolts are not "captured" so they could fall back into the engine if not careful so there is a 2-3% chance of massive clusterduck.
