  • Today’s guest is Dr. Russell Kennedy, aka “The Anxiety MD.” Dr. Kennedy specializes in the art and neuroscience of helping people recover from anxiety disorders. He knows anxiety from the inside out, as he developed his own anxiety disorder due to growing up with a dad with severe schizophrenia. Dr. Kennedy has degrees and advanced training in medicine, neuroscience and developmental psychology -but it’s not all science, as he is also a certified yoga and meditation teacher and was a professional stand-up comedian for over a decade (no joke!) In his award-winning book and audiobook, ANXIETY RX, he shows a practical, actionable program for anxiety relief that incorporates a combination of the latest in neuroscience with the grounding wisdom of the body with the ultimate goal of relieving the anxious thoughts of the mind.
    Today we discuss how to understand and heal your relationship with anxiety, how to discover where your anxiety comes from, common mistakes people make when trying to reduce their anxiety, the difference between stress and anxiety, how to regulate your nervous system in the moment as well as ways to reduce your anxiety long term and much more.
    What to Listen For:
    00:00 Intro
    02:00 What to do if you are feeling anxious RIGHT NOW
    03:52 Why he thinks focusing on your anxious thoughts can be problematic

    I have been paralyzed from the neck down for nearly 18 years, and I experience major anxiety constantly. Being a c4 quadriplegic means that I am unable to move or feel my body below my shoulders, making me susceptible to bedsores. I have dealt with bedsores in the past, and I worry incessantly about the possibility of developing another one. The only time my anxiety subsides is when my caregiver repositions me in bed and checks my skin for red marks. My heart even races as I await my caregiver's assessment of my skin. Coping with this situation is a constant challenge that consumes my every waking moment.

    Spot on with anxiety stored in the body. It literally is a part of who you are. As trauma is a result of something terrible and anxiety is based on trauma, good luck resolving it. I have an anxiety disorder starting from birth, more later at age 8, etc. Being a naturally happy person allows me to compartmentalize anxiety, which isnt healthy, but its the best method ive found for me. I do the box breathing method often, which helps to center myself and break anxiety explosion that would normally spin out.

      @Im-not-alone-Im-full-of-myself 6 месяцев назад

      Yes, that is likely part of the reason. Our brains have not changed much over thousands of years, while technology has changed rapidly. This mismatch can lead to feelings of pressure and overwhelm. Social media and smartphones, in particular, have a big effect on our lives and our overall mental health.
      So, while technology has made many positive changes in our world, it has also caused some negative effects. As with many things, it is important to find the right balance between the benefits of technology and the drawbacks.

    I'd say that's why people with complex trauma, anxiety etc aren't as successful doing affirmations as people who don't struggle that way. There's often some toxic positivity that comes out and it's very triggering for people who struggle with positive thinking bc of how their brains are wired.

      I came across this Dr. yesterday. I have had panic attacks (outer body experience of sheer hell since age 12), I’m now 60. I also inherited this nightmare from my late dad who suffered from anxiety however he cured himself before his early death & 40 years young in “68. This Dr. has also inherited it from his dad(how do people continue to live and make a good life for themselves, I have tried for 50 years).
      This Dr. has a new spin on it. Thanks!

    Speaking for myself, I've had my alarms (tight abdominal wall and clenched jaw) since childhood. It's not until the last 5 years that I came to discover these chronic body stresses. In my day-to-day life, these alarms are on 24/7. I have to remind myself to feel for them to relax them. It's a constant and I've only learned to focus on them after seeing one of your videos last week. Is this the best practice to get into in an effort to access my dysfunctional frontal cortex?

      He referencing something talked about in polyvagal theory. People need social connection to help create a feeling of safety.

      It's subconscious, so it's not something you can turn on or off.

    Is restlessness the same as anxiety? I always feel restless but I won't say it's true anxiety, because I don't feel anxious about the future (whether it's for the day, the week, the year or whatever), I just really struggle to BE... In the present. It's like I want time to go by because I cannot relax. Does that make sense?
