Rory Gallagher: monster guitarist (one of the most influential and greatest); thrilling performer; lovely and charming bloke, died far too young. An Irish genius 🇮🇪 ☘️ R.I.P Rory Gallagher, gone but never forgotten.
Being from the states I never heard of Rory until I saw your analysis a few years ago. I was so impressed that I actually flew to Ireland in May of 2019 to attend the annual Roryfest in the town of Ballyshannon. It was a great time, lots of good music , great people and fresh Guinness.🤣. Since that time I’ve become a massive fan and learned that not only was he a great talent but an outstanding, down to earth person too. I even met some of his band mates. Thanks for introducing me to Rory. Bless him !!!
Denise! God bless you. I had heard of Rory for a lot of years but never invested ot investagted. Internet makes it more possible. I've some roots in the Emerald Isle, and applaud your journey.
Thanks, Fil! So happy to see another Rory reaction! Even back in the 80s most bands wouldn't interact this personally with fans. This was a huge part of what Rory brought to his performances. He genuinely wanted to give his fans the very best experience and always gave 1000%. While the set up at this venue was not the norm, he did make a point of getting up close and personal - even letting fans strum his guitar. There were often stage invasions where a fan would run up and "hug" Rory, and he never minded. Saw him once in 1978 in NY and I was never the same. Would love to see you discuss Rory's band, Taste, Isle of Wight performance...
I saw Rory Gallagher May, 8th 1973 at the Duluth Arena Auditorium and Convention Center. He was the opening act for Fleetwood Mac and Deep Purple and I must say he stole the show, at least for me he did. I watch and listen to him often. RIP Mr. Rory Gallagher. ❤
"I'm A Million Miles Away", Irish Tour '74 via KSAN. Knocked me out. Bought the two record set. Inspiring stuff. knew folks who'd see him at club gigs in the mid '80s and get to hang out with him after the show. Great player and nice guy.
I was fortunate to see Rory in Augusta, Georgia August of 1972 right before I enlisted in the Navy. Also have a rare bootleg of him playing at Richards Supper Club in the same year.
I discovered Rory and his music after being told about him by my big brother back in 1979. He was truly one of a kind. Many people who knew him say that he was offered deals that might have netted him greater fame, but he always turned them down. In fact, it is sometimes said that he often shunned fame for fear of losing creative control over his projects. His death was truly a tragedy. I really wish he would have lived longer. His approachability and kindness were unequalled. When a youngster who was barely more than a teenager approached him after a set at a club, Rory showed him his amp settings, his custom built treble-booster, and gave him some pointers. That young fellow was named Brian May, and to this day he credits Rory for helping to shape his own sound. He was a living legend for nearly all of his career.
One of Rory’s greatest attributes was his down to earth nature and approachability. This quality endeared him with his fans and his peers beyond even his considerable skill as a guitarist. And happily Fil shares the same quality as well.
At the end of the day I believe that's why time will be very kind to Rory and really the one aspect that may eventually catapult him into or above the Hendrix, Clapton, Page of the world.
I am in the states and I just discovered Rory a few years ago. I think the first thing I heard was Walk on Hot Coals from the Irish Tour '74 album and I was blown away. I remember thinking "Who is this guy and how is it possible that I had never heard of him". One of the greats for sure, true to his music and just such an humble guy as well. It can't be overstated what his touring in Northern Ireland during "The Troubles" meant to the people. I can also credit Rory for bringing me to this channel. I am not a musician yet I really appreciate Fil's technical analysis of so many different artists. It makes me appreciate their talent even more.
Great analysis Fil. The OGWT link you showed was actually played by the BBC just after he died. It’s great to hear him using that old Tele for slide - but what grazed my goat was when he used to play brilliant slide in standard on the 61 Strat. As for playing, he never let his guard down, even when he was so ill. Thanks v much!😁
Great seeing Rory getting some love here! Im Irish and he along with Thin Lizzy are still looked up to in the rock circles here. Thanks for this! For your own enjoyment- in yer own time Id love ya to watch some classic footage of Rory from Irish TV over the years. Nice, intimate performances and chat from RTE's "late late show". Thanks again for the amazin' discussions in general on this channel!! Slàinte! -Cheers!
Love the Rory content man, hes not only my favorite guitarist but my favorite *musician* . We'll never see another artist like him. Unfortunately he's not very well known at all in the States. I introduced him to both my dad and step dad who had not even heard of him before and they're both 60!
Excellent analysis and homage. He was an incredible artist. His gigs were magic, I saw him in Dublin several times. Thank you for pronouncing his name right, many don't. (Just one thing, Ireland isn't in the UK. Rory was born in Donegal and grew up in Cork. Both in the Republic of Ireland)
OH, is this my fave version??? I've been looking for it, oh shoot noooooo - of course Rory is excellent in every performance, though this one of this song that is blocked is the best ever!! Seriously, I'm hurting. Gerry is off the charts - that bass, woah!! He's known in the states in the music circle - played with all the blues guys. One song, "Wheels Within Wheels", the lyrics, his unusual vocals are a gem. No video of him playing this particular song live. And there are one or two versions that are ever so slightly different and from what I read, Rory was never satisfied with what he wanted from this song. One thing is for sure, you don't play Rory and walk away to do chores - you sit and sit and have to watch him as he interacts with the audience and how he is one with his playing..yes I am obsessed with this beautiful spirit. 💓
I went on RUclips and watched another video of Bullfrog Blues. High energy and definitely likes his audience. Almost the impossible when he let someone get a couple of strums on his guitar. I enjoy having RUclips and becoming of the newer for me music out there. I lived in different towns and cities. One had a music college with lots of different musical concerts. And then now in a woodsy area with mostly country and a casino that's really good at different music to the area. But still there was a lot of music I wasn't aware of until the enternet and RUclips. Thanks for your analysis.
Well! Another well considered analysis, Mr. Fil. You really zero in on all that is extraordinary, and why--- no matter the subject. Much apprexiated. What an extraordinary player, Rory Gallagher. This size venue/audience is his ideal; it would have been great to see him anywhere, but 40 years later, and on videotape it's a visceral, triumphant performance! Thank you. After Mick Taylor(!) left the Stones, I understand R.G. auditioned to join them (which is always a great "what if" to ponder). Imagine the Stones in 1975 witn him? I regret that I never had the chance to see him.
As I recall, Roy was the type of a musician that really intense music fans were into back in the day. He was not a massive success but a boutique artist-he had his following and they were diehards. A great player.
A lot of truth in that, but Donal Gallagher told me in 1971 that Rory was already a dollar millionaire. He played endless festivals and concerts and always blew everyone away. He just had no interest in fame and fortune as they’re understood.
Depend where you lived - probably true in the US, but in Europe he was HUGE in the mid-seventies! He was top of the bill everywhere he played, and I remember there was a Rory poster in my belgian classroom! He wasn't a "star", he was the musician every rockin' teenager knew.
If you want to see him in action, Tony Palmer's documentary "Rory Gallagher: Irish Tour '74" is excellent as is Ian Thuillier's "Ghost Blues - The Story of Rory Gallagher". The latter has tributes from the likes of Slash and Cameron Crowe. It's a posthumous tribute. Allegedly, when asked what it was like to be the best guitarist in the world, Jimi Hendrix replied "I don't know. Ask Rory Gallagher".
Rory is so underappreciated in the United States, but fortunately is loved in many other countries. He deserved to be in even higher ratings than Clapton.

Yes, the stage version at Chorus! This tv show was so good, they had lots of killer performances. Sadly they are quite hard to find online nowadays, I think the french TV channels are hunting for copyright enfringment ( and they don’t sell copy, neither DVD nor pay per view.. it’s such a shame!) Antoine de Caunes, the man who created the show, is an avid rock fan, and one of the first to program rock, new wave, punk.. at the french TV. Interesting enough, years after he presented another TV show called " nulle part ailleurs" and when you said it was 1980, it reminded me of one of the show Prince did at Nulle part ailleurs, in 1999 ( and honestly speaking’ this is the performance that led me to change my point of view about him). The video quality here on RUclips is quite bad, but when I saw it , I thought " wow, he wants the audience to join him on the stage, just like Rory at Chorus back in the days". So the 2 performances are not strongly linked in my head. I like it so much when the musicians have fun like this on the stage, because I have fun watching them play. And Rory never fail to make me dance ( especially Going to my hometown). So I think that almost any concert organised by De Caunes for the french TV may have this special quality of fun and friendly party. He invited people he really liked to have on stage and is said to have a very good contact and respect to the artists and make as much as possible to have them enjoy their concerts in a nice atmosphere. I need to give him credit here, I miss his rock TV shows so much (Chorus, les enfants du rock, Nulle part ailleurs are the ones that I recall. So if you find one of these videos, you’ll now where it comes from 👍 ) Thanks for the analyze.
You pinned a performance from TOGWT. Rory and the band were phenomenal. Thank god for Whispering Bob Harris and TOGWT or we'd have been restricted to watching some dodgy bands lip sync on TOTP 😂
Sorry to have to be the Irish guy who points out that Ireland is not in the UK (8:40), but great analysis video - I really enjoyed it. Saw Rory live twice in the 70s and have been a lifelong fan.
Rory was the main guitar player that inspired me to take up guitar playing back in '72 and I'm still playing. With regard to Rory not being as well known internationally as say Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page or Keith Richards, from what I've gathered over the years I don't think Rory ever compromised himself in how he wanted to do things. It seemed to me that he wanted to play and perform live rather than becoming a "Star".This is just my personal opinion though. A big shame about the blocking.
Hi Phil, why are you talking about a three piece (at 2:00) - your link obviously shows four guys up on stage, one of them even having a piano solo!? And no people from the crowd up on stage! Must be the wrong link?
Oh sorry, didn't notice that. But it's a little bit confusing to hear you explain a performance that's pretty different to the one we see. Btw there's a video on youtube, Rory enjoying himself touched by his music - an by some enthusiastic fans: ruclips.net/video/go9J9REtfdA/видео.html

Cheers, Donal! (and Fil, haha) 1976... John Lennon was murdered in December of '80. This might be a video record of one of the last 'laid back' and forgiving responses to a lapse in security.
Hey Fil, one would think a 72 year old would be embarrassed to ask this of you..nah, I'm not, & I know your busy, have no idea of the time difference, still, I saw that you 🧡ted my comment I made about this video couldn't be shown because it's blocked you really did a tremendous job of explaining and playing the song in parts..very cool, with that said, I came here and I saw my comment had a few things I changed and bam! your, liking it with your sig is gone, here's the should be embarrassed part, would you mind re-liking it please- then I will delete this comment. Whatever the outcome - YOU ROCK!
To be honest, I felt this band played much too fast. Sometimes much is missed when a song is played so fast. When I was in a band, sometimes some songs got faster and louder and the lyric was barely understood. Just look at how fast the drummer is playing...great band, lots of talent, just alittle to amped up.

Hi Phil, why are you talking about a three piece (at 2:00) - your link obviously shows four guys up on stage, one of them even having a piano solo!? And no people from the crowd up on stage! Must be the wrong link?
Because original video was blocked, I think I explain that at the beginning!🙂
Oh sorry, didn't notice that. But it's a little bit confusing to hear you explain a performance that's pretty different to the one we see. Btw there's a video on youtube, Rory enjoying himself touched by his music - an by some enthusiastic fans: ruclips.net/video/go9J9REtfdA/видео.html
You should react to Led Zeppelin - Since I’ve Been Loving You (Live)
Great review Fil, love when you do Rory. Seen him many times. Badass and flat out was Rory. miss him
check this one out, the last 2 minutes was pure Rory getting off, cheers

Love the way he used to smash those watermelons. Ohhh..wrong Gallagher
Have you analysed Joscho Stephan's playing?
Not yet!
@@wingsofpegasus "yet" - I like that!
Cheers, Donal! (and Fil, haha)
1976... John Lennon was murdered in December of '80. This might be a video record of one of the last 'laid back' and forgiving responses to a lapse in security.
What does he tune his guitar too?? Capo on 2nd fret...is it in G then capo on 2nd?
The normal E tuning would be taken up to F sharp with the capo on the 2nd fret!🙂
@@wingsofpegasus yes got it!!
Rory is extraterrestrial
Roy's brother whom controls Roy's portfolio is strangling Roy's music out of sheer greed for himself.
👍
@@wingsofpegasus Oh thanks!! 👍🏾 ☮
I love you my brothe sir I will talk a bull for you my brothe I got you and my pry sir ok
Deja Vu... Vujaday?
Rory is from Rep of Ireland…which is definitely Not part of the UK. Other than that geographical error, love your analysis
Correct, slip of the tongue!🙂
Can you analyze GG Allin’s crowd precipitation? 🚽
To be honest, I felt this band played much too fast. Sometimes much is missed when a song is played so fast. When I was in a band, sometimes some songs got faster and louder and the lyric was barely understood. Just look at how fast the drummer is playing...great band, lots of talent, just alittle to amped up.
This band played fast and slow songs for example Mississippi sheiks, brute force and ignorance, cloak and dagger
@@drummingearth5326 yeah..they are excellent.
