Saw him in 1980 in Munich. About a 3,000 capacity venue, all standing. He was playing 2 nights, i had tickets for the 1st night. He was so good, i took a day off work, bought another ticket, and saw him again the following night. Never done that with anyone before or since. The Germans loved him dearly as we all did.
Unique, iconic, legend.
Nobody out there ever remotely like him.
In 1973 he was on a USA tour supporting Deep Purple & Fleetwood Mac, one stop they played was at the San Diego Sports Arena.The next day was an off day and Rory was booked to play at the San Diego State University Student Union, I was there.
It was held in a small (@ 75' x 100') empty multi purpose room. There was no stage or stage lights, they just set up in a corner on the floor. Despite this bare bones set up and to a crowd of under 100 people they played with the same passion and intensity you saw on this video.
Half way through they took about a 20 minute break and rather than heading out, Rory just walked out into the crowd and sat down right next to me and asked "How do you like the show?" I really did not realize who he was at that time, I had just heard he was a really good guitar player. So being an electric guitar player myself, I was there to check him out.
We got to talking about guitar and I said that after watching how incredible he played that I wanted to just go home and throw my guitar in the trash. He seemed shocked and said "Oh no, never do that. Just keep at it and just play what you love!". I then asked him about a chord progression he had used in the last song and he went over, grabbed his Strat and showed me how to play it. He then handed the Strat to me and said "Here you try". It's the same progression he used in Shinkicker which I still play to this day.
As I said, I did not know he was a celebrity, and he never acted like one.To me he was just a super friendly, generous and down to earth guitar player with magical talent. All these decades later I am in awe that I had unknowingly been touched by greatness!

Hi super cool story , Rory,s brother Donal Loaned that very same strat to Joe bonamassa to play a part of his show at the royal Albert hall , Joe said he felt lightning in his veins using the strat , the video of this is on you tube .Rory was a great and always stayed true to himself .

Rory Gallagher never sold out to be mainstream, he just always gave everything for his 'Art'.
I still think that Irish Tour 74 is one of the greatest live albums ever made. The version of A Million Miles Away off that album is just one of my favourite pieces of music.
Along with SRV, when Rory went from a 3 piece to a 4 piece with keyboards, the band and overall sound was better for it.
You are spot on with that opinion. A Million Miles Away (from Irish Tour '74) was to Rory what Little Wing (live from Royal Albert Hall) was to Jimi Hendrix.
Rory Gallagher could have been a mega star but he played for the fans.. He refused to bow down to the suits and the commercial music industry...A legend and incredible artist

I'm sure you noticed that, no matter how fast Rory played, he NEVER fumbled a note, never tripped over himself and EVERY note was clean, clear, and fluid.
About Rory and the Stones, you're absolutely right Donal: musically it's an attractive idea, but Rory never could have been just a sidekick (sorry Ronnie) - he was a leader, guitarplayer, singer, songwriter, performer.
C'mon, man! Woody deserves some love. Every time I turn around there's someone commenting on RW's skill, or lack thereof, when he is an incredible guitarist in his own right. He has a lot to do with creating the Stones songs and influencing their sound. Jagger and Richards brought him in for a reason. Why does it make sense to so many that the Stones would choose him because, as I hear again and again, Richards wanted a guitarist who wasn't very good so his playing would seem better?
@@awickedtribe I love Woody and that's why I was sorry to use the "sidekick" monicker about him. I have nearly everything he recorded, from his Jeff Beck Group time till his solo albums.
@@realdocloco Have you heard his band 'The New Barbarians' ? or Ronnie Wood and his Wild Five? If you haven't and dig Woody, check them out... the first is really raw and like Faces/Stones meet the New York Dolls/Stooges.

Let’s be honest, I love Woody, but Rory would have absolutely blown him off the stage in the 70’s. His lead,rhythm, and slide playing is far superior.
Lets not forget that Rory beat out Clapton in 71 for Blues Guitarist of the Year.

I have been a fan of RG's since hearing him do 'Bullfrog Blues' on a King Biscuit Flower Hour radio show back in 1970ish. He didn't get much radio play and for years, well into the 80's I was constantly turning on guitarists friends to RG because McAvoy was one of my fist Bass Heroes along with Randy Jo Hobbs (the McCoys and Johnny Winter) and wanted to jam out on RG songs. Best thing about the internet is Rory has the audience he deserves.

Allow me a correction, Rory was voted the best guitarist of the year in 1972 and not just the best blues guitarist. I remember it well because it was the year I heard it for the first time and immediately became a fan.
@@Seventysongs I concede that, being 67, my memory may be suspect, especially since Rory was really getting noticed and making a number of lists for his playing after his first solo album. You are correct it was for 'guitarist' not just 'blues guitarist' … It was actually for Melody Maker's International Best Guitarist.
I believe I am correct as to the year however. I first heard Rory on a radio program, doing 'Bullfrog Blues' shortly before his first solo album dropped in 1971. That same year his second album 'Deuce' was released. His first 'Rory Gallagher' was very hard to find. By the time I found it, the only copy in the Import bin of a little hole in the wall record store his second was scheduled to be released. It was easier to find because besides Melody Maker their competitors, Rolling Stone, CREEM and Crawdaddy mags, were all naming him on their lists for guitarists. Shortly after I got 'Deuce' Rory won the aforementioned award. I suggest that, while you may have first heard it in 1972 because that was when it was announced on a broader scale, Rory actually won it in 1971.
Either way, Rory kicked some ass when he went solo and kept doing it until his death. I never understood why he wasn't more well known. For years I not only had a hard time finding his records but I never met anyone who knew who he was. Most of the times I saw him live it was as an opening act, and the only reason I went to the concert. At the same time I turned a lot of guitarist playing friends (I played bass and piano in a number of bands) on to him over the years and never once met anyone who didn't instantly become a hardcore fan. It wasn't until the early 80's that I started to see his albums in record stores and was able to complete my Rory collection. I spent a lot of time hunting down albums as they came out before then.
@@awickedtribe Exactly, it must have been reported by others in early 1972. I remember reading in a German magazine called 'POP' and I live in Brazil ... the news took a while to get here. My first contact with him was on an album / collection by Taste called '' Pop History Taste Vol 2 '' and then with the album '' Live in Europe ''. Here his albums were also not easy to find and some were not released in Brazilian versions, so they only had imported ones and were quite expensive. It is really surprising how few people knew him and you were very lucky to be able to watch some of his concerts. He never came to Brazil so I only saw him twice on specific TV shows ... just a few songs ... and on a radio program called '60 Minutes of Contemporary Music 'which re-broadcast BBC concerts. I am 63 years old.
Rory was a master guitarist and performer. And finally some credit is given to Gerry McAvoy. Love your reviews Fil and it works great with Donal!

Rory’s been my main guitar icon since I bought Tattoo, brand new in ‘73, fan for 47 years, and devastated when he passed from infectious disease after liver transplant. Saw him many times , especially remember he opened for Rainbow when they started their North American tour for “Man on a silver mountain” breakout. Glad I’ve been around to see history in the making.
Rory is my favourite guitarist of all time. His energy and passion for his craft was amazing. His band had to be good to be that tight. RIP Rory.
Rory was always the ultimate showman as well as a supreme player - When playing in the three piece situation he had two great bass players (Richard McCracken with Taste & Gerry McAvoy with The Rory Gallagher Band) - I saw both bands in both small and large venues right through from 1968 to 1994 - no gig was ever the same & Rory was such a humble guy off stage. Happy St Patrick's Day . . .

So, I am not alone in my feeling Rory was (is) unequaled. I always though myself to be on an island. Million Miles Away is my favorite, for in this song his guitar so portrays what is happening in the club, as well as the feeling of the man in the story. Rory had it in spades.
Rory was amazing. What a joyful experience in time. It’s infectious even today. We are blessed for his presence.
So fitting, as on this day, Rory's family has issued a new album of his live performances, Check Shirt Wizard Live in 77. Thank you for always giving Rory some love. He deserved so much more recognition than he got in his lifetime.
Rory was a hell of a stage performer. Great request. I always liked Bad Penny and Calling Card. So many great songs by Gallagher.
Thanks again fil....I saw Rory Gallagher from the years 75 thru 91...a total of 5 times....every time was a small venue in San Francisco... I was always close enough...you could reach out and touch him....his shows were always fully energized and EPIC!!....and 3 of those shows I was able to shake the legend's hand....never will there be another Rory Gallagher.....it cannot be duplicated!! My all time favorite guitarist. period!!
I just got home from visiting friends... you just made my night perfect.. I used to live in Cleveland where I used to go hear Rory play the Agora.. I got to meet him.. he's was the best person I ever met in my life.. I put this on my face book page!

Rory Gallagher was a massive formative influence on my early lead guitar playing. Acoustic & electric. I cut my teeth absorbing everything he played. One of the all time rock heroes to me. Hugely influential.
I've commented on other videos that I saw Rory open for Rush on the "Signals" tour c.1982. To this day, I have never seen someone play the hell out of the guitar like that, plus he worked the crowd into a frenzy like no other opening act I have ever seen. His keyboard player looked a bit road weary and apathetic at first, but smiled and came to life due to the incredible crowd response. Thank you for this, along with the great commentator.
My favourite version of this classic is the one from Lorient in 1994. Rory was really sick at the time, but at the 3 minute mark or so, he miraculously switch on to God mode and churns out one of the most beautiful guitar solo outros of all time! Leaves me in tears every single time I see it!
Rory is such a fabulous performer and musician... So much involved... So generous and devoted. I have seen him twice on stage in France back in the 70s and the concerts went on and on and on because of the encore...he kept coming back for his audience.
I am still a fan and miss him so much. He has enlighted people's life for a much too short period.

I am from Kerry , 50 miles from Rory in Cork my hero for ever , he went shoulder to shoulder with the best in the world .
We had 5th row for this tour at the Royal Oak Music Theater in Michigan. Still one of my favorites after all these years.
The top players have a stand alone sound and Rory laid down a tone and attack so that you know instantly that's him!

A quick story about Rory. When I saw him play at Hammersmith ODEON, on a solo on Tattooed Lady, his guitar strap broke and the guy standing with me watched in awe as he carried on playing the solo while holding his guitar up.My mate a guitarist himself said to me you do not realise how difficult that is to do and still talks about it to this day with reverence. I can honestly say I've never heard a bad word said about the man, just a wonderful humble modest guy.But when you put him on a stage,there's no one but no one better live,the master performer, Rory G☘

Rory was the man, he had the best rhythm section backing him up. It’s amazing how full their sound was with just a 3 piece on stage.

Rory really was a one off,He insisted on coming to Belfast every year during 'The Troubles' While other bands/artists gave us a miss,Seen him live on numerous occasions and once went backstage at the Ulster hall and met him,very humble man and a genius on the Guitar,(no pedal board for Rory)Bit off topic,But I recently witnessed some spokesperson from the so called RRHOF being interviewed on RTE (Ireland's National TV channel)he was waxing lyrical about having HOSIERS cheap first guitar as if it meant much,Meanwhile Rory is constantly overlooked,shame on them,and Ryan Turbiddy for not having the Balls to ask why.

Imo The RnR HoF, is a joke. Deep Purple just recently made it in. I'm still shocked at the legendary bands of the 60s & 70s that sold so many albums, played to huge arena crowds, that aren't in there. I don't know who their historians are, but they're lacking in knowledge. Saw the president of the org talking, she wouldn't know Rock n Roll if Bill Haley & the Comets set up in her living room & played. Probably say who's that fat guy, & why is singing about rocking around the clock? Utter joke.
The bass guitarist . I was in a band , but briefly. In the studio you know how important the bassist is . It's like the sex pulse ..if you will . Rory is great , but I can't say anything about him . What a great video Fil. Not just Rory in full flight but Donal Logue as well. My first gig was Rory Gallagher in The Ulster Hall, Belfast, way back in 1978 and I had the good fortune and sense to see him live half a dozen times after that. No wonder that 'main stream media' is dying when there are creators like yourself producing first class content like this. Mr Logue, an excellent actor who brought a real sense of actual threat to 'The Vikings' and 'Sons' of Anarchy' - loved you in Gotham and just about everything else that you have appeared in. Not just that but you are a Rory fan as well - RESPECT dude! As the Irish would say 'Pints all 'round!'

Every time I see his name come up there's people who talk smack about his paying, even suggesting he was picked to be in the Stones because his subpar paying makes Richards look better. Even here I responded to a Woody comment and I think your opinion would carry some weight to dispel this lunacy.

I was fortunate to see Rory twice in Boston MA. I got to talk with him for about 1/2 hour as we packed him up. Such a gentleman. RIP my friend .
There are guitar players that play the blues because they want to and guitar players that play the blues because they have to. The later is where you find real authenticity and Rory was one of them. He was right at the top of the pecking order for me. Incredible on both acoustic and electric. A multi instrumentalist. Mandolin, harmonica even saxaphone. Sadly missed but never forgotten.
Have to agree with Donal about Rory's studio albums being great but his live performances taking his craft to another level. I first saw Rory on the Old Grey Whistle Test he played 3 or 4 songs and I went out the next day and bought his "Live In Europe" album and Ive been a huge fan ever since.

Hi Fil! You are introducing me to music I wasn’t aware of, or listening to a different sound at the time! This was a treat to learn about this musician! Quite good! I am so glad I chose you to be the one I support as a patreon...you give me such joy learning about so many different sounds...is it okay to say I love his playing better than his singing? lol. He really puts a lot into his music! Thanks so much for teaching me so many new things! I always considered myself well read on musicians, but I am a novice compared to you! Rory reminds me in how he responds to the audience and interacts like Bon Scott as vocalist did for early Acdc.

@TexanUSMC8089 3-23-2023 It could be that he was more of a musical attraction as a guitarist's favourite guitarist, (not that they were his ONLY fans) versus a massive public attraction, that had spectacular stage shows, for example like E.V.Hallen, may be at least in part, why he wasn't more popular, even though his playing was equal and/or better than his contemporaries.
He wasn't into glam, fancy stage outfits, or extensive production, etc., maybe during a time where that type of a "show" was in demand?
I was blessed to see him at the Lone Star in NYC. I was about ten feet from the stage. The amount of energy coming from the stage could have lit NYC!
The first time I saw Rory he was the warm act for Fleetwood Mac and Deep Purple , he was the best act . The second time I saw him , he was the warm up act for Paul Butterfield and again was the better act . I know as I did the poster for that show . Jerry Macavoy nailed it on bass with the drummer producing a very exciting show . Rory could always take off anywhere as he knew the rhythm section was always there .
Pure Rock&Roll! Excellent! Someone I wish I had a chance to see live. You can see how Rory influenced a lot of great guitar players!
Great to see an actor I've admired from the early days with Grounded For Life right through to Gotham so involved and knowledgable about the music he clearly loves. Particularly with fellow Corkonian, Rory Gallagher. So good to see. Cheers.

Loved the way you presented this, the man was so loved by us that saw him, he really was unique, I met him a few times and he was such a gracious man, who will always be special to me. Think he is one Europe's greatest guitarist, his sound was immense and loved his song writing.
Rory Gallagher, the Irish hero who inspired a thousand Irish bands. Doesn't get much better than this.

I first found Rory in 1971 as a young high school kid. And through my like, there have been three constants, the Beatles, Allman Brothers and Rory. Rory's family are starting to release material that was never heard before, recently with "Blues," "live in 1977" and an RSD release of an acoustic performance in Cleveland.
Rory had an almost ethereal connection with his guitar and audience. Jerry never knew what the second song was going to be.... Rory never used set lists, it was based on feel by Rory. I got to see them in 1978 while stationed in Germany in a small gymnasium. You could feel his energy, and his music took you to another place. He was a master of the guitar, self-taught to play electric, acoustic, mandolin, dobro and slide. He was passionate about his music and never sold out. And was humble, quiet, and just a gentle man.
Thanks Fil and Donal for your expert analysis, story telling, and bringing those who have never heard Rory a chance to hear this amazing blues guitarist and maybe they will check out his other music!
Rory played by his own rules. No record company was going to control him. I love & respect him for that..as well as his amazing playing..writing ..& singing.

This was the encore. This was an amazing show from start to finish. The band was on fire. I saw Rory in Sydney many, many moons ago and he went well over time and it was LOUD. Great stuff. I cannot play just one RG album . I always end up binging most of his records.
Don't forget that Strat layed in a ditch for a good while that destroyed much of the finish as well . Great show guys ! 😎🎸🤘

Rory was such a down to earth and kind person. Everyone who I have read or heard speak about their personal experiences with Rory always go out of their way to speak of those qualities. Even with his renown he was always humble and approachable and lacking in ego.
So my question for Fil is whether he'll play his new Strat enough to achieve the same relicing as Rory's signature Strat. Looking at Rory's Strat you'd swear a good part of him had worn into the guitar itself, there's got to be bits of his DNA in it.
This was a really special analysis video, having Donal as a guest to contribute his thoughts was wonderful. So great to share our love of music and Rory together.

Thanks Fil and Donal for some very interesting analysis. Rory has been my 'favourite' guitarist since 1970 and I've seen him live on two occasions. Always renowned for his energetic, live performances - he was a guitar virtuoso who often featured an acoustic set when playing live. Quite simply, he was the guitarists' guitarist - hugely respected by other musicians. I think it was really interesting to highlight the modest (almost introverted) nature of Rory, in private - yet on stage he was dynamite!

He was there for the fans , music , for the joy of music . I can only say thank you to a work mate who lead me to him because I played GUITAR only 5 years ago . I have every cd book of him and still hold him higher then most( joint with Mr Green ) but don't forget Gerry McAvoy what a bassist..
I saw him in St Louis MO - he and Jerry McC came out and took our heads off for 2.5 hrs. Blistering set!
Brilliant video. This has cheered me up no end. I'm a huge Rory fan and saw him live in 1992 in College Green in Dublin (outdoor free gig!). Great to hear his surname being pronounced properly by both you guys too! Galla-her instead of Galla-ger!

The arthritis bit me also. I was finally able to obtain all of my dream guitars ,and then just wound up selling them.(crap). Strat ,Tele ,Les Paul's (Jr. ,Special ,custom) 335 , My AC30 and all my gadgets. It sucks getting old.

Thank you for posting this video, Fil.. Rory is my hero and my guitar icon...I was blessed to see him in 1974 during the "Tattoo Tour" here in the States and it impacted me deeply....he was awesome, the way he connected with people was like no other. His virtuosity was astounding!

A great insight to the G. Man's performance. I did hear a rumour that when Rory jammed with The Stones as a potential replacement for Taylor. That Rory came up with the distinct Start me Up. Opening rift. ( Obviously not credited though! ) Also I think Donal looks a bit like Ted McKenna. Not so much in this clip, but later in his career.

Wonderful video, thank you.! Fascinating chat. There are many of Rory’s live performances that I prefer, to his studio recordings. He was exciting live in concert. Not many performers have that energy and charisma. Rory had it. His live performances brought him fame. He preferred intimate settings, and connecting with his fans. That’s why he has a strong loyal fan base.. and why he was known as the “people’s guitarist”🎸
