Good ear! Yes, Slash is a big Rory fan, as is Brian May, the Edge, Johnny Marr, Vivian Campbell and many others. This is a classic Rory Gallagher piece but by no means really shows off his guitar chops. Try checking out "Moonchild" performed in 1982 at Rockpalast in Loreley. Or a more blusey piece such as "Calling Card" from his 1977 Hammersmith Odeon performance. Rory was a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter who passed up the chance to joing the Rolling Stones and never sought fame and fortune. For him, it was always about the music. Please check out more of his extensive catalog! Thanks.
Ritchie Blackmore said Rory was the most natural guitarist he ever heard, Ritchie not known for his praise of other musicians, and a hell of a guitarist himself
Rory had the best live recordings. Irish Tour74 and Livein Europe. He AND his 4 pc band smole!
You can add Jimmy Page to that list.
As a fellow Irish man. Rory was incredibly. Met him on a few occasions. As he was a good friend of Henry Mclough. Henry who played with Paul McCartney. Henry was a friend of a friend.Rory was a very humble and quiet guy. Not up his own backside like most guitarist then and now. Be well my friend and keep enjoying, Rory.
There are some great interviews with people on RUclips about Rory. Brian May went to see him in 1969 at the Marquee. Asked him afterwards how he got his sound- Rory brought him over to his amp and showed him (Vox AC30 and Trelble Booster pedal). Rush toured with him in 1974, and he showed Alex Lifeson how to do pinch harmonics ( which Slash also copied). Jonny Marr learned how to play by obsessively listening to and learning Rory’s “Irish Tour ‘74” live album. Joe Bonamassa opened both of his London shows a few years back playing Rory’s Guitar (loaned to him by Rory’s family), and playing Rory’s song “ Cradle Rock”. Other admirers include Vivian Campbell and Mick Jagger (who wanted Rory to join the Stones after Mick Taylor left). A VASTLY underrated guitarist and performer, and a big influence on many guitarists.
Rory is a legend 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
Saw Rory in 73 opening up for Deep Purple when they were peaking . he blew the roof off the place and after his set he did an encore and we were standing on our chairs screaming for another encore which he did but we wanted more..Rory made it very difficult for Deep Purple that night to come on after him.
Slash got to share the stage with Rory in California when Slash was just starting out. They then hung out until dawn, playing. Slash admits that he learned a lot that night. Check out early Rory! Gerry McAvoy played bass with Rory for about 30 years, Bullfrog Blues, Moonchild, anything from Montrose are all worth checking out.
Good one Lee. 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻 Certainly a few from Rory to come 🔥🔥🔥🔥
RUSH was opening act for Rory early on. Then... Rory was opening for RUSH.
Alex Lifeson is a great fanas well.
Thanks for reacting to Rory, I hope you will continue to dig deeper into his music - with 11 studio and 3 live albums, plus loads of videos from his many televised performances, there's plenty to choose from!
Here are a few suggestions to be going on with...
Walk On Hot Coals - The Old Grey Whistle Test 1973
Bullfrog Blues - The Old Grey Whistle Test 1976
Calling Card - Hammersmith 1977
Do You Read Me - Rock Goes to College 1979
Tattooed Lady - Rockpalast 1979
I Wonder Who - Belfast 1984
Shadow Play - Belfast 1984
Yes Slash looked up to Rory. The 2nd g is silent in Gallagher.
Not many but the Irish know that the 'g' is silent.☘
Good man you identified Rory’s influence on Slash, they played together once in LA. Rory’s guitar was stolen once and dumped in a ditch before it was recovered.
That guitar was stolen some time late 60s early 70s and found in a ditch a few weeks later. The guy was a genius and amazing live. Saw him in Glasgow and Edinburgh before leaving the UK never to see him live again. The guy was a beast live.
Where have half of these men been never heard of Rory must be my age?RIP Rory 🎸🎸🎸
As the crow flies rory gallagher the best acoustic song you will see 👀
Why not Rory's song, "Going to my hometown"...💓💕🎼🎶🎵
Rory era o cara! Meu eterno vício......
Jimi was asked on The Mike Douglas show in U.S.in the late sixties, FACT.
As for RoryG,no one better live and I've seen most of them. One the nicest nicest fellas you'd ever meet, and very modest with it.
Lucky to see him 3 times, never disappoints.Maestro!!☘
This isn't even top 20 as far as Rory's best guitar work! Still really nice!
Jimi Hendrix also said the same about Terry Kath
And apparently Billy Gibbons. I’d guess what he meant is “ There are a LOT of great guitarists out there, I’ve just heard this guy play, I think he’s great- why not ask him HIS opinion?”
You should try "Bullfrog Blues" from Rory played at Old Grey Whistle Test. There are long solos from all the band members. I assure You, what You heard here from the bass player, it was nothing.
I'm discovering what rock'n roll is. And I just found the source of it all. That source is called Rory Gallagher. Could someone explain to me why he is not so well known? And another question: Does he sing and play like Jimi Hendrix, Pete Townshend, Angus Young... does he imitate and take inspiration from them or were they inspired by Rory Gallagher ? Rory Gallagher is the source from which all guitarists came. Rory Gallagher is above all guitarists out there. That is totally true.
Hendrix, Clapton, Beck, Page and Peter Green came before Rory Gallagher. Do some research before making statements like that. They're all 1960s artists, Rory didn't come to prominence until the 1970s.
In 1982 we had sparklers. And lighters!. But we actually watched and listened to the bands rather than the little screen on our phones
Isn't that the truth!
Jimmy hendrix FOREVER❤❤❤❤❤YES
Best song to show off Rorys abilities is his acoustic cover of "Too Much Alcohol "
That is an often mentioned "quote" from JImi Hendrix, but I believe it to be urban myth, and Rory's own brother and manager, Donal, claims that it is unlikely to be true. Rory was still a great guitarist, especially live.
I doubt it’s an actual quote,I’ve heard that Clapton said ask Prince to the same question or that Hendrix said ask Joe Walsh and a few other versions
maybe Jimi thougth so, or it was just an uneasy answer during an interview with Rolling stone magazine....
Just to bust the myth- Jimi Hendrix also reportedly said that Terry Kath was the best. Einstein also reportedly claimed that several other scientists were smarter than him. It's just a myth that fanboys indulge in. Jimi often praised other guitarists so if he did say that Rory was better than him I think he was just being nice. Having said that Rory is a GREAT guitarist. He might be underrated by the general pubic but guitar players now how good he is. He was a little limited in musical style but for fierce rock blues he's among the very best.
have you been under a rock
Rory rules , completely improvised every live show. How can someone your age not know of him. Did you not listen to music from the 70 s this song was off of his Top priority album. Studio version. This guy smoked everybody. In 74 Aerosmith was booed off the stage in New York. By making the mistake of having him open for them.
No mate, I started listening to music in the 90's and it was current music at the time
@@imrmediagaming2479 My mistake, to me you appeared way older. Well, at least you got one good decade of great music, way better than the 80s. Rory was so intense in concert, I'm don't know if Hendrix really made that quote. I've heard he said the same about Billy Gibbons and Terry Kath. To me the only player like Rory was Stevie Ray Vaughan. Green day. No ,I don't think so. There might be all kinds of great music that you would love from 67 to 73 rock blues kicked ass. It went out the window as cocaine took over from psychedelics. Then MTV completely bought out the whole thing trading Modanna for Leslie West or Robin Trower. Seattle scene changed things for a few years and now most music is just hyped up garbage.
I'm a base player & I'm a way better guitarist than Slash - very poor technique - trust me m8
Rory Gallagher was a phenomenal guitarist and this was a good song but he did very much better than that.
You must live on another planet 😂
Greenday what a joke😅
The baseline sounds like when I come around by green day, why is it a joke?
As jimi Hendrix was asked: "How is ist to be the best guitarist in the world?" He answered: "In this case you have to ask Johnny Winter."
I thought Jimi's answer was "you should ask Rory Gallagher". Me, big fan of Jonny Winter.
Jimi never said that.
Hendrix never said it!
He should have.
