Just reading the comments, sorry for the old news re Jimi. I was a cab driver back in the day, I took a pregnant girl in labour one night to Kings College Hospital Camberwell in South London, jumped the red lights, the whole ten yards. Found out next day Rory had passed there that night. Missed but never forgotten. He was the man.
Wow, what an incredible story-thank you for sharing it. That must have been such an intense and emotional night, with so much happening at once. It's amazing how these moments stick with us, especially when they’re connected to someone as legendary as Rory. He truly was one of a kind, and it's clear how much he meant to so many people. Thanks again for sharing a piece of history and your personal experience-it really adds a unique touch to the conversation. Missed but definitely never forgotten!

He went for the interview with the Rolling Stones but Keith Richard was stoned so Rory left and went to Japan to continue his world tour. Thank goodness.

And thanks for the pronunciation tip - GAL-A-HER it is! 🎸🌍 #RoryGallagher #MusicLegend #GlobalInfluence
Rory didn't get the promotions from the music industry here because he controlled his own affairs with the help of his brother Donal. He sold 30 million albums before his death in 1995. He was top draw in Europe & played & toured non-stop. No he did not release singles. He didn't want his music split up. He did have a loyal following here in USA from those of us who knew of him. He was a humble kind man but a beast when he hit the stage. I saw him in 1972 at a huge open air rock festival & became a fan forever. His 1st band Taste played at the Isle of Wight 1970 musical outdoor festival which had a larger crowd than Woodstock. Lots of footage on You Tube. Watch him playing "Sugar Mama" there while with Taste. They got 5 encores! Rory was unbelievably great!
Rory was asked by John Peel if his name is said Gallaher, Rory then said Gallagher. Peel then said "OK please yourself". This can be heard on Taste box set I'll Remember on the track Railway And Gun. I'm also Irish, not that means anything and there are many accents in Ireland.
That’s such a cool story, but there’s actually no record of Jimi ever saying that. It’s one of those quotes that gets passed around because it sounds like something he *might* say, but there’s no solid proof. Still, it’s a great way to imagine the mutual respect musicians like Jimi and Rory Gallagher could’ve had for each other!
Back in 1973, in Southern California, my high school buddies and I bought tickets to see Deep Purple at the old San Bernardino Swing Auditorium. We saw the opening act of some dude from Ireland named Rory Gallagher. We were all so blown away and he came back for 2 more encores. Rory inadvertently stole the show. (No disrespect for DP, but it was just fact) we all went home and bought a bunch of Rory Gallagher albums and became Rory Heads.
Rory passed away almost 24 years ago now. If he knew how much he was still revered now by his fans and those who'd never heard of him during his lifetime, I think he would be humbled as he was a very humble man - you should watch the whole of the Rock Goes to College gig or the Bullforg Blues encore on the Old Grey Whistle Test (or the whole show) to understand how humble he was. He lived for his music and, yes, he was not commecial although he was pressured to release one single 'Philby' which was also included as a single with his Top Priority album. Lots and lots of his gigs are on RUclips and I could recommend countless - or all - of them. I was going to suggest some but there are too many and all versions of the same song are different. OK, Laundromat live at Montreux (1975) has a nice jazzy feel to it and the Souped Up Ford encore live at Volkshaus Zurich 1980 is an out and out rocker. And sooooooooo many more.
Funny you mention Hendrix, when asked by a reporter at Woodstock what it felt like to be the greatest guitarist in the world, he answered "Ask Rory Gallagher" That's respect. Nice reaction. R.I.P. Rory.
@@BruceandCarlaThat story is just a fairy story though, a complete myth since Hendrix had never said any such thing. The ones who reference it say it was an interview in Rolling Stone, an interview at the 1970 Isle Of Wight music festival, on The Dick Cavett Show, on The Mike Douglas Show, and here's someone saying it was at Woodstock. As I said just a nonsensical fake story.
Nantwich, Cheshire, Bank Holiday weekend at the end of August 2024, can't wait. 13th year of a Rory festival. I'm from Belfast so I'm no stranger to the genius, but Nantwich is just 20 miles from where I now live. He's revered in these parts, too, thank goodness. Bring it on!
Can’t believe people never heard of Rory Gallagher. He’s a legend. To appreciate this track you should familiarise yourself with the studio version. Even with an out of tune guitar here the guy still wipes the floor.
I was at that gig, at Middlesex Polytechnic in Hendon, London UK, January 1979. It was filmed for a BBC tv series called Rock Goes To College. Rory Gallagher was a guitar genius and is a total legend. It's fantastic to see this again and it's great that you like it so much too!
Wow, what an experience that must have been! Being part of a Rory Gallagher gig in '79 and it being filmed for Rock Goes To College sounds like a once-in-a-lifetime memory. Rory truly was a guitar genius, and it's awesome that the magic of that night lives on. Thanks for sharing the nostalgia! 🎸🌟 #RoryGallagher #GuitarLegend #RockGoesToCollege
Great Rory reaction! There's never been anyone like him before or since - truly a one-off and he is loved as much for who he was as a human as he is for his music. SlumminAngel's suggestions are all a great way to continue on a Rory journey, hope you keep on...
Saw Rory in 73 opening up for Deep Purple when they were peaking . he blew the roof off the place and after his set he did an encore and we were standing on our chairs screaming for another encore which he did but we wanted more..Rory made it very difficult for Deep Purple that night to come on after him.
I saw that tour. Fleetwood Mac (right before the Buckingham-Nicks era) did a set between Rory and Deep Purple. They were practically booed off stage. But both Rory and Purple were great!
Thank you for taking my suggestion! And your observations about Rory playing second fiddle to Mick & Keith is spot on. Rory also didn't play to an audience, he played with his audience, pulling them into the performance in a way most performers couldn't. Rory didn't use a setlist and played whatever he felt the mood of the moment required. His band had quite a job keeping up with him. He was a fan of Dylan and a contempoary of Hendrix, influenced by many of the same blues players as Jimi. Please do check out more of his performances!
Thanks for the suggestion! It's awesome to hear that you appreciated the insights. Rory's interactive approach with the audience and his spontaneous style make for an unforgettable experience. I'll definitely dive into more of his performances, and AGAIN, thanks for the recommendations! 🎸👍 #RoryGallagher #MusicConnection #FanSuggestions👍🏾😁
Actually, Rory did release a single - Same Old Story/ Born on the Wrong Side of Town- in March 1969 when he was in the band Taste. I know, because I bought it. Rory’s work with Taste is worth checking out. Live in Europe is a great live album. Thanks for the reaction - he has always been a great guitar hero of mine and seriously underrated.
The record company released it without his permission - Rory was furious! He did, however release Philby as a single, because it happened to be the right length for radio (so didn't need to be 'edited') and he liked it. It wasn't promoted though. Other than that there was a free single included with one of his albums, I don't remember which, because he wanted to include an extra two tracks that there was no room for on the vinyl.
I don’t think he was very interested in commercial success: he just had a love of playing. I had the pleasure of meeting him backstage when he played with Taste at my university. He came across as a very genuine sort of guy. I will always remember sitting at the side of the small stage and getting a close up view of him playing.
That's a priceless encounter! Rory Gallagher's passion for playing and his genuine spirit shine through in every note. Meeting him backstage and witnessing his performance up close must have left an unforgettable mark. Such experiences make his music even more special. 🎸✨
Thank you for this great first reaction to the legend that is Rory Gallagher! Hope you dig deeper, with 11 studio and 3 live albums plus many many live videos like this one, there's plenty to choose from. A self taught multi instrumentalist (he played electric, slide and acoustic guitar, mandolin, harmonica, and even saxophone in the early years), singer and songwriter, Rory left us a huge and diverse body of work, as well as blues and rock, his music also draws from folk, jazz, funk, and even a bit of country. Rory didn't want to release singles or music videos (the videos on YT are from televised live performances) as he saw that as more geared toward the pop scene and he had no interest in becoming a celebrity pop-star, and didn't indulge in a rock-star lifestyle. As he said "The industry doesn't know how to categorise me - I think like a folk artist, get my energy from rock, but my soul's in the blues!" He is also widely acknowledged to have been one of the nicest people you could ever meet. Here are a few suggestions for future reactions I Fall Apart - Rory Gallagher 1971 (his first album after the break-up of his previous band Taste, audio) Can't Believe It's True - Rory Gallagher 1971 ( he plays guitar and sax on this one, audio) Just The Smile - Rory Gallagher 1971(acoustic, audio) What In The World - BBC Sessions (audio, recorded in concert for radio 1973) Daughter OF The Everglades - Blueprint 1973 (audio) Walk On Hot Coals - The Old Grey Whistle Test 1973 Bullfrog Blues - The Old Grey Whistle Test 1976 Calling Card - Hammersmith 1977 Rory Gallagher - Pistol Slapper Blues_Too Much Alcohol - 2/14/77 RTE Studios, Dublin Tattoo'd Lady - Rockpalast 1979 I Wonder Who - Belfast 1984 Shadow Play - Belfast 1984 Okay, that's more than a few, but they're all quite different and should give some idea of the diversity of his music.
@SlumminAngel Your Rory Gallagher knowledge is on point! 🎸 Thanks for dropping all that info! We definitely caught a bit of Jimi Hendrix in there! Big thanks for your suggestions, we appreciate it! 🤟🎶
Hi guys, I saw Rory many times and he gave everything every concert. Try and review Shadow Play live and you will see what an entertainer he really was.
I saw him in late ‘72, small stage, small college gig I was right at the front, best gig of my life (but I never got to see Pink Floyd) you could see in face how much he loved playing, went well over his allotted time. The Stones wanted to sign him to their label and Jagger wanted him to join the band. Apparently Deep Purple had him as a supporting band for their US tour he got a standing ovation- a bit awkward that. I could go on, there’s so much to tell and it’s fun finding out.
Great review guys. I was lucky to see him live back in the day, unforgettable. Remember, this was brand new for us. Jimi Hendrix was once asked by a reporter, "Whats it like to be the best guitarist in the world?" Jimi replied " Ask Rory Gallagher," True story. Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much for the kind words and for sharing that incredible memory! Seeing Jimi live must have been a once-in-a-lifetime experience-something most of us can only dream about. And that story about Jimi’s response to the reporter? Pure class. It says so much about the kind of person he was. We really appreciate your support and hope to keep bringing content you'll enjoy. Thanks again for sharing!
Listen to his live version of the song, Philby. He plays an electric Coral sitar that he rented from Townsend. Rory played mandolin, harmonica, and saxophone as well, and his acoustic sets were unreal. He lived to play for the people, and off stage, he was a soft spoken, gentile, kind man, who was always willing to talk with his fans.
Rory Gallagher was a true musical maestro, and his live performances were something else. The fact that he played multiple instruments just adds to the legend. It's heartwarming to hear that offstage, he was such a down-to-earth and kind soul, always connecting with his fans. A true gem of an artist! 🎸🎶 #RoryGallagher
Hi guys really enjoyed your reaction this is one of my favourite Rory clips. You might also try "Bad Penny" live in Paris or "A million miles away" live in Madrid -from your 42nd subscriber 👍
Jimmy Page was recently quoted as saying " A live band performance is only as good as the audience " he's also like Freddie when asked " What instrument do you play?" To which he replied" The audience darling"
Jimmy Page nailed it when he said, "A live band performance is only as good as the audience." It's true, the crowd vibe can make or break a show. And then there's Freddie Mercury, asked what instrument he plays, and he goes, "The audience, darling." Classic Freddie! It just goes to show, it's not just about the musicians; it's about that electric connection with the crowd that makes a gig unforgettable. 🤘🎶 #LiveMusicMagic
I saw Rory live in 1974 on the same bill with ted nugent, and frank marino. maybe take a look at roy buchanan live form austin tx; a crazy version of "hey joe"
Rory wasn’t cut out to be Keith Richard’s rhythm player. Lol Check out Million Miles Away on Irish Tour and Take What I Want live disc on BBC sessions.
Just got tickets to see Joe Bonamassa play Rory's album "Irish Tour 74" set list. In Rory's home town of Cork Ireland in July'25. Cant wait to see Joe's take on Rory's songs. Really looking forward to it. Joe is a real fan of Rory's music.
Can you imagine rory on on stage backing up sick jagger he new it would never work rory is a front man that's why he left the hotel wen Keith was asleep rory went to a gig he had in Japan luckily for us
Jimi Hendrix called this Irish Rocker, "The best guitarist that nobody outside of Ireland and the UK have never heard of. Rory was one of the top 3 in the world.
May I also recommend Hawkwind's 'Space Is Deep' from their 1973 live Space Ritual album (with Lemmy on bass). Different from Rory's music but also bloody incredible. The whole album is incredible and really needs to be heard in its entirety to experience the, er... experience. Or try Silver Machine, their 1972 single, for a concentrated version of Hawkwind.
Someone during an interview with Jimmy Hendrix, whats it like Jimmy to be the world's greatest guitarist? Jimmy said I have no idea you should ask Rory Gallagher
It's a well-publicized fact that the Stones offered the post of lead-guitar to Rory. Only recently did I hear the account of why he did not join. He was not even going to go to the 'audition', but his brother/manager kind of forced or persuaded him to go. When Rory went to London, he was supposed to meet Keith Richards, but because of Richard being in a drugged-state of being non-disposed, Rory, realizing that he had a gig to play with his own band did not hang around and left to play his gig. This is the only detailed account of this I have heard. The great Roy Buchanan was later also offered the job and made up a temporary excuse at the time, but admitted years later that the real reason he turned them down was that he had been told by other musicians that they were indeed responsible for Brian Jones's death. Eric Clapton was offered the job a few times, but has stated that he felt they did not need as much guitar as he would bring. This aligns with your comment that Rory/w his guitar was a show all his own. Many believe that Mick Taylor was the best guitarist the Stones ever had, but has recently recounted the he left because of the recurring drug busts, he having to be around heavy drug use with which he had a problem himself, along with the fact that Mick Jagger promised him some songwriting credits for his input into some songs and never followed through.
Hey! Sorry for the late reply. Wow, that's some crazy Stones history. Rory's London adventure sounds like a wild ride, especially with Keith Richards in a drugged state. And props to him for sticking to his own gig commitment. Also, Roy Buchanan's excuse and the whole Brian Jones's death rumor is like straight out of a rock 'n' roll mystery novel. Bands really do have their drama, huh? Mick Taylor's reasons make total sense too, dealing with all the drug busts and broken promises. The rock world is wild, man! Thanks for filling us in.
Rory didn't join with the Stones because he basically wanted to play his own great music rather than play a lot of their mediocre stuff ! He was too good to be playing with them anyway.Glad he didn't join them !!
The decision was much more mundane than that, Keith was too out of it to join in the decision making and Rory would have had to cancel a tour at the last minute to Jin so he left on his tour, although you are absolutely correct that he couldn’t have been happy just playing lead and solos on Stones’ songs and not singing himself and it wouldn’t have worked. Similarly Jeff Beck was also considered but was similarly too much of his own Ma for the Stones. Ron Wood was the ideal man for that gig. Rory was just to big; too much of an individual voice for the Stones.
Rory's Gallagher was around before Hendrix in fact Hendrix was asked how did it fell to b the best guitarist in the world and Hendrix said you want to se Gallagher about that
Wrong on both counts. Hendrix was making a huge impact on the music scene while few, if any, people had even heard of Gallagher. The "Hendrix said Gallagher was the greatest guitarist" is just a myth, he never said anything of the kind.
Jimi hendrix was once asked by dick cavet on the dick cavet show what does it feel like to be the world's greatest guitar player then jimi replied you'd better ask rory gallagher.
That's a great story, but actually, Jimi never said that. It's one of those myths that’s floated around for years. Jimi had a lot of respect for other musicians, and while he never said this specifically about Rory Gallagher, he did speak highly of many artists who inspired him. Rory was definitely a legend in his own right, though! Both of them left an incredible mark on music.
I always thought that Rory Gallagher kind of looked like Jimmy Page. They have similar facial features whereas they could be related. I know they're not
Oh, totally get what you mean! Rory Gallagher and Jimmy Page do have that similar vibe in their facial features. It's funny how people can look alike even when they're not related, right? Ever notice any other musical doppelgängers out there?
Rory auditioned for the Stones but Keith was drugged and absent and probably wouldn’t have wanted Rory anyway. Ronnie Wood was an obvious and safe choice. Looks like a Stone, plays like a Stone, partys like a Stone.
Its pronounced Galla-her. the g is silent. Can you believe he got his sound with an AC 30 with a treble booster.?!?! Think of the effects racks and pedal boards players use today.
It wasn't just the Rolling Stones, it was also Deep Purple that asked him to replace Ritchie Blackmore after he left and formed Rainbow. No band was good enough for him, Rory was an unleashed hurricane that couldn't be contained in a regular type of a band. He was his own act, and what an act!
Only 3 of them onstage. Incredible stuff
All three were great but Bullfrog blues with the fella with lightning fingers on the organ, where they all had a solo was fantastic.

Great Rory reaction! There's never been anyone like him before or since - truly a one-off and he is loved as much for who he was as a human as he is for his music. SlumminAngel's suggestions are all a great way to continue on a Rory journey, hope you keep on...
@1Moonchild Glad you liked the Rory Gallagher reaction! Absolutely, we're keeping the journey going. More coming your way! 🎸
Saw Rory in 73 opening up for Deep Purple when they were peaking . he blew the roof off the place and after his set he did an encore and we were standing on our chairs screaming for another encore which he did but we wanted more..Rory made it very difficult for Deep Purple that night to come on after him.
@tonetone7572 Wow, what an incredible experience! Love hearing these awesome concert stories. Thanks for sharing this epic memory with us!
I don’t think he was very
interested in commercial success: he just had a love of playing.
@maxplanck66334 The original Taste released first single Blister On The Moon/Born On The Wrong Side Of Time in 1968.
As he said "The industry doesn't know how to categorise me - I think like a folk artist, get my energy from rock, but my soul's in the blues!"
He is also widely acknowledged to have been one of the nicest people you could ever meet.
Here are a few suggestions for future reactions
I Fall Apart - Rory Gallagher 1971 (his first album after the break-up of his previous band Taste, audio)
Can't Believe It's True - Rory Gallagher 1971 ( he plays guitar and sax on this one, audio)
Just The Smile - Rory Gallagher 1971(acoustic, audio)
What In The World - BBC Sessions (audio, recorded in concert for radio 1973)
Daughter OF The Everglades - Blueprint 1973 (audio)
Walk On Hot Coals - The Old Grey Whistle Test 1973
Bullfrog Blues - The Old Grey Whistle Test 1976
Calling Card - Hammersmith 1977
Rory Gallagher - Pistol Slapper Blues_Too Much Alcohol - 2/14/77 RTE Studios, Dublin
Tattoo'd Lady - Rockpalast 1979
I Wonder Who - Belfast 1984
Shadow Play - Belfast 1984
Okay, that's more than a few, but they're all quite different and should give some idea of the diversity of his music.
Fantastic start point for a first approach to Rory versatility. Thank you!
@SlumminAngel Your Rory Gallagher knowledge is on point! 🎸 Thanks for dropping all that info! We definitely caught a bit of Jimi Hendrix in there! Big thanks for your suggestions, we appreciate it! 🤟🎶
@claudiadebianchi9357 Absolutely! 🎸 Just scratching the surface with Rory Gallagher - he’s a musical prodigy!!
We have a statue of him here in Ireland
Rory was busy and couldn't make the stones offer,we went to the same school !!!
Rory just wanted to be rory.
Great reaction. Thanks!
Rory did simply love to play No one could put him in a genre box
Hi guys really enjoyed your reaction this is one of my favourite Rory clips. You might also try "Bad Penny" live in Paris or "A million miles away" live in Madrid -from your 42nd subscriber 👍
Thank SO MUCH!! For subscribing. And we’re glad you enjoyed the reaction. We will look into those. Thanks for the suggestions.
Rory era o cara! Meu eterno vício.... Obrigada pela reação.
Never a single but 30 million albums
Cruise on out , or jinxed, ride on red. So many more
Jimmy Page was recently quoted as saying " A live band performance is only as good as the audience " he's also like Freddie when asked " What instrument do you play?" To which he replied" The audience darling"

Great stuff thanks for that .
No! Thank YOU! stay tuned.
Bob Geldof remarked in a documentary, that Rory was a priest, and his Church was the Blues..love it.
Jimi was once asked how it felt to be the greatest guitarist in the world, he answered, I don'😂know you will have to ask Rory Gallagher!
Sign of humility. That's awesome.
It's just a myth. Hendrix never said it.
Rorywent to meet the the rolling stones Richard was passed outin a room and Rory walked away went back home
He had a pre=booked tour in Japan so he went straight there.
Gallagher released a total of ten single, five with his band Taste and five as a solo artist.

Hendrix was asked in an interview , Whats it like to be the best guitarist in the world ?? He answered You need to ask Rory Gallagher
He was even better in the 80’s
Can you imagine rory on on stage backing up sick jagger he new it would never work rory is a front man that's why he left the hotel wen Keith was asleep rory went to a gig he had in Japan luckily for us

richard was passed out in a room and Rory joined the Toykeo tour not waiting for richards to come down from his high
Check out Bull Frog blues
you might find Jimmy was influenced by Rory due to their time together in London in 67
Bull frog blues live gig is amazing
Jimi Hendrix called this Irish Rocker, "The best guitarist that nobody outside of Ireland and the UK have never heard of. Rory was one of the top 3 in the world.
That's just a myth. Hendrix never said it.
No Pedals just Guitar
Yep!
Rory used a Dallas Rangemaster treble boost.
There was no such interview. Hendrix never said that, it's just a myth.
Hendrix when asked …..you’re the best guitarist in the world……. He Replied……you should ask RORY GALLACHER about that
The record company never promoted him properly in the u.s.a.
Shadow play
Wanna take another step up? Check out Robin Trower.
Pronounced Gallaher, in Ireland .middle g is silent .
Rory was too good for the Stones, he was a frontman, he wouldn't have been happy being subservient to Jagger.
Bullfrog
Think of the effects racks and pedal boards players use today.
please check out Bobby Caldwell - What You Won't Do for Love.mpeg
Sure thing! Bobby Caldwell's "What You Won't Do for Love" is pure gold. Thanks for the recommendation! 🎶👍
