Rory Gallagher was born in The Rock Hospital, Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal, Ireland as his father was working on building a dam to generate electricity for the county. Rory Gallagher was arguably the greatest guitarist of his generation and perhaps of all time.
This is from 1979 at the Montreax Jazz Festival. I have this on DVD. The whole performance is great. This is his opening song. If you liked this one then check out his closing song, Shadowplay from the same show. It's a great performance. The bass player is Jerry McAvoy. He has been Rory's bassist for most of his solo career. The drummer is Ted McKenna. He played for years with The Sensational Alex Harvey Band before joining Rory. Seen him twice, in 82 and 91. The second time I saw him Slash was in the VIP section. Rory brought him out for one of his encores and they jammed on a couple of Chuck Berry tunes. It was pretty awesome.
As Donna said: He totally kills it. His Stage Struck live album from 1980 are phenomenal. Songs like Shinkicker, Wayward Child, Brute Force & Ignorance, The Last Of The Independents and Shadow Play. That trio rocked.
I had the chance to see him live, and i remember a clear airy sound of guitar, a controlled sound despite the passion, a clear speech, and this man gave off a simplicity and an aura of sympathy.
A "shinkicker" was a kick started over compressed boy racer motorcycle- if (when) it miss fired starting you got a whack in the shin. As you can see from the comments his fans still love him. It felt like he was one of your mates when you went to see him. His acoustic picking is amazing too. I really your enjoyed your reaction. You might enjoy him doing Pistol Slapper Blues, it is on Youtue.
Greetings from Ireland. God bless Rory !! The guitar he is selling is just about to go on auction. He bought it for 100 pounds in Cork Ireland and its expected to sell for over 1 million euro
I knew Lulu would like the hair! Lol for Kathy eye rolling. Lulu IS reacting to the video. In Rock’n’roll appearances are almost as important as the music! Image, stage presence, clothes, hair! 😂😂
The British indie guitarist Johnny Marr later declared he knew he was in the presence of genius when he saw Rory change a guitar string WITHOUT stopping playing. It was relentless touring that made him fit for purpose and he never compromised. There was no danger he was suddenly going to do a disco album; whatever the merits of that form.
Rory passed away in 1995. That Fender Stratocaster he played was the guitar he played throughout his career. The paint peeled away because Rory had a rare blood group that made his sweat very acidic. That guitar was recently sold at auction in London for £889,400 ($1,156, 793).
I've only seen him play once live and that was at the Reading Rock Festival in 1980. It was a three day festival and he was headlining the first day ( Friday ) The last song he played was a Well known song at the time called ( Shadow play ) worth a listen . Best wishes ...
He doesn't need to be,in fact ,i hope he never does! Rorys performances and charisma and exciting guitar playing overshadows any hall of fame nonesense!
What a great guitarist and performer - thanks for share this vid. One of the best live albums ever are the "Irish Tour" record and unforgotten songs on it like "Bullfrog Blues" and of course "Too Much Alcohol". But he wrote so many cool songs... ! Best wishes @all from hamburg / germany
I like when you girls are on fire and Rory certainly has you on fire so hold on to your britches. Great to see a proper rock performance without pyros. R.I.P Rory much too young.
This whole concert at Montreux was fabulous, but Rory never did a bad concert (until he was ill). I'd argue that some of the Irish Tour performances are just as good, along with the Rockpalast (Germany) or the Old Gray Whistle Test (UK). He was on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert and the Midnight Special here in the US. IMO, any live performance, especially in the 70s, is going to be good. I was privileged to see Rory a number of times throughout the 70s and never saw a bad show. His beat up 61 Strat he's playing here is going up for auction on 10/17/24, with an estimated sale price of $1 million. Personally, with all the guitarists like Sir Brian May, Slash, The Edge, just to name a couple, I think that guitar is going to go for considerably more than that. Once you start listening to Rory, you'll find yourself really enjoying that rabbit hole. I'd suggest "A Million Miles Away" or "Bad Penny" as a next listen, as well as "Going to My Hometown," In the last song, you see that his energy is contagious no matter what he was playing.
The iconic guitar, which has a price estimate of £700,000 to £1 million (US$909,084 to US$1.3 million), will lead a sale of the late blues rocker’s collection of guitars, amps, and accessories at Bonhams in London on Oct. 17.
Thanks James and ladies for excellent video. I am thinking of Tenacious D, and their song "Tribute", for they could not play the best song in the world, and IMO this is not the best live Rory video, for I would go for "Shadow Play", from Montreux 1979, the same brilliant concert that "Shin Kicker" was taken from.
I forgot to mention the great bass player Gerry Mc Avoy and drummer Ted Mc Kenna who also played in MSG sadly Ted also passed away a about 3 or 4 years ago they were a great team
You need to check out a newer band from Los Angeles called Starclawer. You will not be disappointed. The female lead singer has to seen to be believed. They are astonishing.
You are welcome ladies.... like I told you in my intro, this man makes all the rest look like amateurs..... his world tours filled coliseums, there were even riots in Greece, when a bunch of people were turned away..... at the Isle of wight, there were naked chicks rushing the stage, his band TASTE made Hendrix look like an amateur. Hendrix got heckled, and Rory had naked chicks running up on the stage....
@@user-dh5bnafe4b I don't have to..... if you've ever seen the Isle of Wight concert, you'll hear quite succinctly that Hendrix was getting heckled, whilst Rory Gallagher and Taste had naked women jumping up on stage with him... @jameswagoner3309 You say it's a "fact" that Taste ruled the day at the IOW Festival because Hendrix was sub-par on that day? How very strange since Taste played at the IOW Festival on Friday, 28th August 1970, while Jimi Hendrix played in the early morning of August 31st . He wasn't at his best, there was clearly something not right with him. He died three weeks later. Then of course, there's Chicago who actually did play on the same day as Taste and which act was better is a matter of opinion, not a fact. One of the artists that I feel most privileged to have seen live. Rory did it his way and never compromised.
He just seems to be having the most fun you can have with your clothes on! The pride and joy of the Emerald Isle!

McAvoy joined the awesome Nine Below Zero after Gallagher, and McKenna played with Gary Moore.
Gerry, not Jerry. Just sayin'
Rory is my favorite blues guitarist. Very talented and a very humble man.
Not just a guitarist, singer, songwriter extraordinaire
Rory Gallagher is the best!!!

Notice the way Donna (grandma) is loving it, whilst Lulu (granddaughter) remains oblivious. The younger generation just don't get it.
i would pay to see that
Take a look at Bullfrog Blues from OGWT 1976
look out for Joe Bonamassa playing two Rory tribute concerts in Cork. Joe playing Rory's songs, what could be better!

- Metal Ripper
- Winged Hussars
- Soldier of Heaven
- Dreadnought
- Race to the Sea
All by Sabaton.

Pity who has to follow that wow special
"i like his shirt " ...she is too young to recognize greatness !
Amazing musician. Saw him many years ago when a member of Taste. Yet another guitarist who doesn't make it onto any great guitarists list.
A quick way to lose friends Lulu.😂

An artist virtually unknown outside of the USA Needed more international exposure really As he could have been one of the greats/ legends
Uh no. He is Irish. Lived in Chelsea London. World famous and listed consistently in the top 25 guitar players of all time. Amazing artist.
