I've spoken and talked to Rory on a couple of occasions. 1976 Jazz Bilzen was the first time. Having to seek shelter from a heavy down-pour during a Ted Nugent gig. Rory was waiting to go on stage and the electricity went South. Nugent went mad and Gallagher was just sitting there, forlorn. I offered him my beer and we started talking about Belgian beers and the intricasies of brewing them. Just like that. Two people in the middle of chaos, just talking. I was fifteen. Met Gallagher again four years later at the 1980 Reading Rock Festival. He bloody well remembered me and we picked-up our conversation about Belgian beers right there and then. Promised to send some beers over, which I did, at a very expensive fee and I met Rory again backstage at the 1982 Reading Rock Festival. Te nicest guy you can imagine. Friendly and welcoming, treated you like family. We had an appointment in early 1996, through mutual friend Roland Van Campenhout, a Belgian Blues artist, but Rory died, way too soon, and we of course never met again. I'm staring at some promised beers as I write. They're sitting there, on the shelf for all these years. I don't dare to touch them, afraid he'd go away when the beers do. Love the man. He was such a lovely person and I miss him.
You made me cry though l only just discovered Rory a couple of months ago and can't seem to get enough of his music & history. He pierces the soul, a fine human being. Thank you ❤️🇺🇸
Rory was a rare breed. Superb electric guitarist...excellent acoustic guitarist.....more than adequate harmonica player.....indeed an All Around Man. I admired Rory covering blues artists like Bo Carter, Big Bill Bronzy, Blind Boy Fuller, JB Hutto among others. Most other artists of the time period covered the bigger blues names such as Muddy Watters, Howlin Wolf, BB King, etc. Nothing wrong with that but Rory went those extra steps to honor and keep alive all the great original blues players from the past.
I’ve been telling you for years, man - RORY! I think what makes him so special is that he started out playing acoustic and immersing himself in the older folk blues, and you can feel that connection going all the way back to the Delta.
My God how good is Rory Gallagher? Just tearing it up and carrying you away. Rory lives. Legends never die. You know Rory is in blues heaven now. Trading 8s with Jesse Ed Davis, Jeff Healey, SRV and Jimi. I can just hear them. Blasting the clouds away. Own the place. Love Rory's singing, doing same vocal/guitar notes simultaneously. Such a duet. Rory showed great respect for the original American bluesmen. I know they appreciate Rory's talent and respect. Gerry MacAvoy's bass is such a great part of Rory's band. Way to go lads. RIP Rory Gallagher.
The best act bar none, you could ever see live, Was lucky enough to have seen him 3 times, pure energy, amazing performer, nobody better on slide guitar, genius, nuff said☘
This is form a BBC Old Grey Whistle Test Special full concert on Rory’s 27th birthday - I remember watching it live - this was a really big deal in the days before the internet and video recorder and mobile phones - there was only 3 Main TV stations at the time. After the program finished being ‘live’ broadcast, the cameras kept recording the encores for another twenty minutes. Everyone loved Rory.
Thanks for the excellent and in depth look at that clip and Rory in general, I have several playlists on my channel that showcase his entire career, also a fellow named T.S.Mcphee and the Groundhogs, thanks again ! Great upload💎
Really enjoyed your reaction to Rory`s version of All Around Man, and like you said the old Bluesmen never got to see their songs performed by the "next generation" And sadly Rory was taken from us at the age of 47, he always gave credit where due and always treated the old songs with the greatest respect....
I agree, the long gone Bluesmen would be proud of Rory and all the other musicians who appreciate the "old" Blues. I'm happy that I saw Rory live twice in the mid 70s when he was on top of his carreer, never forget these concerts. Great reaction as always, thank you, all the best from Germany
Rory credited Bo Carter often before playing that one. He adjusted the lyrics somewhat because Mr. Carter's original lyrics might have been a bit too descriptive for that audience. :) Thank you so much for posting this.
Love Rory and i saw him and his band at a small club here in Manhattan decades ago called The Bottom Line and my table were i sat was right in front of the stage so i was literally about 2 feet away from him and I could literally touch him, that close! The man put on an amazing show and was a great guitarist....RIP Rory!
When Jimi Hendrix was asked, "What's it like being the best guitarist in the world", on the Tonight Show in 1969, Hendrix said, "I don't know, ask Rory Gallagher".
Two 'live' masterpieces: Live in Europe 71' and 'Irish tour 74' ! 100% agree with you on how guys like Rory, or Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, Ten Years after, etc. have brought the Delta and Chicago bluesmen in the light and recognition they deserved. Without them the music of the 60's & the 70's could never have been.
Love Rory. One of the greats. Rolling Stone magazine, has always been, and will always be, as much of a joke, as the so called RRHOF is to any real artist
what does it say about the blues that an irish boy like rory could preform like this...to be that good at a music from so far away...says a lot about the nature of the blues i think
Thank Soul Train Bro I appreciate your honesty and great taste in music; I saw Rory in 1971 same band and I agree with your view of critics from all those tasteless rag magazines especially those critics in Rolling Stone. They don’t get it. Pick up an instrument and try playing like Rory then you will understand where he is coming from . I look forward to more of your Reactions of other musicians. Thanks again soul brother. Ps I appreciate you bringing up the real players of old and giving credit where it’s due. Rockin Dave
Seen him years ago , just loved his guitar playing so gifted , the rest of the band to ,just great music , loved your reaction and insights , YOUR RIGHT MY FRIEND FANTASTIC R.I.P. 🎸🎹🎶🎸😊
Excellent, Excellent, Excellent. I always love watching Rory Gallagher. I watched an interview with Rory one time where he talked about being in the States somewhere, I don't remember where, and going into a drug store and buying a bottle of Bayer aspirin. He dumped out the aspirin and used the bottle for a slide. I wonder if that is the bottle he bought that he uses in this performance?
Because of the rhythm and vibe, I started hearing Howlin’ Wolf’s Back Door Man in my head. Never exposed that much to this artist. This is GREAT sh*t! I ADORE slide and soulful harp.....and here you’ve got both. Excellent! Thank you to the sub who sent the link!
Man, I love rory so much.. check out Taste live at the Isle of White "What's Going On". 20 year old Rory in flying form. It's rumoured that Jimi Hendrix hung around to watch hm play
Might be my favorite live performance by Rory (but then, again, I tend to think that whenever I see one). Probably more than any of his blues contemporaries (with the exception of Allman Bros), Rory's homage to the original artists, that he loved and respected, was pure and genuine. Thanks for another great Rory reaction and for sharing some of the original Bo Carter version. Would love to see you check out some of Rory's Beat Club performances: "In Your Town", "Used to Be", "Crest of a Wave" and "Just the Smile"! BTW, love the "One Way Out" reference.
Awesome harp. (Rory played a mean alto saxophone too. Check out "It's happened before it'll happen again" With Taste. He's played the sax on other albums too. 👍✌
At the press conference, a reporter asked, Jimmy Hendrix “How does it feel to be the best guitarist in the world?” Hendrix shrugged and replied, “I don't know, ask Rory Gallagher.” Rock historians
1 I appreciate your honest review. 2 Please please, please stop pronouncing the 2ng g in the name, in Ireland it would sound more like Gallaher, I won't confuse you with the Gailic spelling, Gallagher is an English poor attempt to spell an Irish name. 3 he was a very modist man who always took the time to educate who wrote the song before he played it, if not himself. 4 His live shows.. Drat been to G&R, Dylan, ac/DC the later came close... But not quite Carlling...
Thhere was no one like rory. The pride of Ireland

Rory never did this song the same way twice. Each time he performed it he would give it something special.

we owe so much to those blues greats like Bo
You get it, man. Whatever it is you get it.

Same
Love Rory; he was amazing. btw, his last name is pronounced "Galla-her." (Irish pronunciation)
Here's a piece of cheeze. Now go away.
I too am from Donegal
Rory is fantastic.
Rory credited Bo Carter often before playing that one. He adjusted the lyrics somewhat because Mr. Carter's original lyrics might have been a bit too descriptive for that audience. :) Thank you so much for posting this.
Thank you for this review and expressing your appreciation for Rory's music. He was indeed a class act. Again, thank you!

He said Billy Gibbons. Perhaps in an interview he praised Rory.

In 71 melody maker voted him top international guitarist above Clapton, and rightfully so

looks a lot like the Coricidin bottles Duane Allman favored!

So glad you followed my advice and took a listen to Rory 😉 I told you Calling Card is a great album 😂
Did you see when he did Calling Card? It was my request. :-)
@@walkingwounded3824 I did see that one. Was so happy to see STB do that album. It's one of my favorites.
Awesome harp. (Rory played a mean alto saxophone too. Check out "It's happened before it'll happen again" With Taste. He's played the sax on other albums too. 👍✌
Cool!
Stunning effort by Rory and band, its great to see a Rory revival happening across RUclips. Thanks so much for your videos, STB👍
"Try "off the handle", " shinkicker". This tune, all round man, Rory changed the lyrics a wee bit. The original was a bit (double entendre!!) 👍✌
Love you Rory, beautiful musician
Rory is fantastic now take a listen to Stone The Crows
Goddamn it…. That was the slowest 3rd degree burn ever. And STB commentary for the the 4th dimension.
Remember this OGWT show. Rory who learnt on a plastic pretend guitar.
Ireland once again producing the goods!
The best of 🇮🇪👍☘️
rory died at 45 mate, broke my heart
Theres a story that Rory once changed a broken string and never quit playing
Johnny Marr of The Smiths said in a video that he saw Rory do just that.
Loved Rory Gallagher & Bo Carter, l cried and couldn't sit still. Thank you 😍
At the press conference, a reporter asked, Jimmy Hendrix “How does it feel to be the best guitarist in the world?” Hendrix shrugged and replied, “I don't know, ask Rory Gallagher.” Rock historians
Rory greatest of all time rip legend
The most talented guitarist most americans dont know.
Personally, I would put Bloomfield at the top of that list.
@@SecretAgentSuperDragon both great hard to say Bloomfield was way underated but so was Gallagher both equal but different styles love them both!
Rory too died a very young man
The original by Bo Carter is magic.
Yes!
Yo STB check out "Live in Europe"
You should check out Almost Famous. A movie based on a young Rolling Stone writers experience on the road with the Allman Brothers band.
It was based on Cameron Crowes covering The Allman Brothers and Led Zeppelin as a teenager for Rolling Stone magazine...great movie
A great movie....very enjoyable. I’ve watched multiple times
Rolling stone magazine isn't worthy of using to wipe my ass!
Don't forget Paul Butterfields Blues Band. Covered a lot of old blues songs. So so goid.
Just because you got that VIP cap on come on Dang Doodle
Robert Thomas Christgau? RS

Rory also turned down offer from mick jagger to join the stones
Fuck hell
Yeah. Rolling Stone sold out. They used to be real and into discovering the "working man" musicians. I don't read them anymore after that.
Rory is no lower than the 2nd best blues/rock guitarist of all-time! Clapton isn't even top ten!
