i love your reaction to this. Rory is special to me. Being Irish, small country, having a guy like that made us feel present and contemporary. And he was such a decent sweet man. We were lucky to have him.
Much respected by guitar players across the globe; the greatest compliment I can give Mr. Gallagher is that he was the real deal.
He never sought fame or fortune; he lived to play.

Fantastic. Rory Gallagher and Gerry MacAvoy just tearing it up. Such soul, talent and energy. Just like Elvis lives. So does Rory Gallagher. Never equaled. Rory's fans love him. Not hard to hear why. So glad Rory was video recorded for posterity. Only the very best like Hendrix, SRV, Jeff Healey and Jesse Ed Davis can play this well. I know all of them are jamming hard in blues heaven now. RIP Rory Gallagher. An inspiration for us all.

Rolling Stone hasn't been relevant in a long time. Rory is so authentic. He's not really trying to impress anyone, just play his ass off for his fans, and screw everyone else.
They offered him a position in the Stones and he turned them down......wasn’t interested in big stadiums, liked the intimacy of clubs and halls.....he played purely for the love of music and his fans.....we miss him dearly, one of the great Irish exports!

Exactly. I got tired of 90% of the classic rock i was brought up on. I discovered Rory about 15 years ago around 20 years old but I know I'll never tire of his music. Only a select few musicians I can say that about.
Rory was great to see live.. gave everything and such a great player with a very tight group.. a gallus punter
One of the things that needs to be mentioned. The records from those old blues artists were almost impossible to get in Ireland in the sixties when Rory was learning this stuff. He literally had to work hard to get those records so he could learn these songs, and his knowledge was unbelievable

Not too many people know about this guy. I saw him in concert with my buddies long time ago. Not a hits artist but great guitarist. Guitar is my thing.

As for you, Soul Train, I could listen to you for hours. And I do. You are extremely knowledgeable in your evaluation and your voice lends authenticity as you chew over every aspect of late 60s, 70s and early 80s music and artists.

I saw Gerry McAvoy with Band of Friends last year playing Rory songs. He's no hack. Rory was a pure artist and an even nicer man. Thanks for your reviews of my favorite 🎨artist. Love your reactions. You have a great feel and ear for music.

The tone that Rory could get out of his guitars is what a lot guitarists would love to do, both successful and armature.
I saw Rory play at the Whisky-go-go back in the 70's. He was awesome, became a fan from that moment on.

I was lucky and got to see him at the Cleveland Agora 1977 till he passed on... I remember it was like Christmas day when Rory was coming to play!!!

I absolutely love Rory Gallagher !! I recall my first ever concert: 1st up Rory Gallagher,..2nd, Fleetwood Mac and then to end: Deep Purple. Woah. I was so impressed with Rory. The man played his heart off. Thanks a bunch for this Soul Train Bro!
How lucky you are. This concert is classic ... I read somewhere that he captured the audience and almost complicated the night for F. Mac and Deep Purple.
I saw him early 70s in Lincoln, Nebraska. Same lineup. Rory was incredibly incredible
Titles the same, Pistol Slapper Blues. Rory had great respect for the old blues guys. His "go to" Music, along with Eddie Cochrane, Buddy Holly etc. 👍✌

Really miss Rory. He really was the best. So versatile, so adept and sang the blues right from his soul. He really did play this music live even at festivals. There really has never been anyone like him.
Saw Rory twice in the 70s and at the Golden Bear before he died in the 90s. A huge THANK YOU for posting this. Rory is my favorite blues rock icon. WHAT A TALENT!

Lovely, you've gotten to Rory. Anything by Rory. He has contemporary stuff as well.
And then some cool live performances of his early band, The Taste doing jazz and blues esp. at Isle of Wight.
During a very extreme time of the Irish conflicts in N. Ireland, Rory might have been the only one who was not from N. Ireland to play there. He comes off as a humanitarian, a true human to spread joy and authenticity. He had time for fans and remembered kind reporters.

Thanks for pointing that out. I believe that's the main thing that makes him stand out. You can really hear the Celtic influence in his playing, especially when he "picking" the hell out that guitar

Man...wished you'd played the live cut of Rory playing guitar with Jack Bruce on Bruce's song "pOLITICIAN"..awesome example of a musician adapting to a song he really is not too familiar with.
Yes, soo good! Politician used to be on YT. But can watch & listen to this now on Dailymotion. Rory was so versaltile, played all types of music. But started & was basically a strong electric blues guitar performer. Watch him in 1st hit band, Taste, performing at Isle of Wight 1970 "Sugar Mama" absolutely nothing better! Most of his work was great rocking, bluesy performances with his bands, occas did acoustic as in clips just showed. But he thrived on Live performances, directly to his fans. A non-comformist, kind of rebel, he refused to be overtaken by the traditional music scene & label industry. Therefore, no airplay in USA. BUT did tour here , on his terms. Saw him at large rock festival early 1970s in NC. Unbelievable, never forgot it. Just a huge star in Europe. The best, above Hendrix, Clapton, Page IMO.
the bass player is Gerry McAvoy and he is alive and well and is No hack, played with "nine below zero" for a lot of years

Rory played on Muddy Waters London Sessions. He took I Wonder Who from those sessions and played it on his 74 Live Irish tour.

Important to point out that Out On the Western Plain was originally done by blues legend LeadBelly. Leadbelly was a colorful character.
Last comment, promise!!, as a lifelong Taste and Rory fan (since i first saw Taste 1969 at the age of 17) , and growing up in that magical, music, wise 60s and 70s era, I totally sympathise with your views and comparisons of the music then and now... Gerry McAvoy a Belfast lads was one to constant with Rory staying with him for i believe 20yrs as his bass man.Gerry id still out there now play music with his band 9 below zero
My favorite Rory tunes are "Messin With The Kid" from the 74 live in Ireland album and That one Live Performance of "Shadow Play" on RUclips. He could Really make that Strat Sing!

Probably a singer you will never have heard of, is Luke Kelly, singer with the Irish trad group The Dubliners,
Check out him singing, Hand Me Down My Bible,
And you'll understand that the Irish bring something unique to music,
The feel for the music, it almost flows out of every pore,
Its what makes the Irish and Black musicians, kindred spirits.
And I think it's great to hear someone feeling the song and music.
STB…if you like this version of Too much alcohol then you must absolutely listen to the same song at the Reading festival in 1980. Rory with his public eating out of his hand. Every time I listen I have an enormous smile on my face and I don’t know why but there is always a fly in my eye.
That guitar style is not easy, kind of a ragtime feel. Anyways, glad I found your channel. Not often you see Rory getting his props these days.

Fantastic, just fantastic. Great selections. I have been a fan of Rory Gallagher since I saw him perform on the old Midnight Special show, or maybe it was the In Concert show, I can't remember it was so long ago. Some of my favorites of his are Brute Force and Ignorance, Shin Kicker, Calling Card and his version of Bullfrog Blues. There are many others of course.

It's not a heresy to say that blues enthusiasts from the British Isles popularized the blues with their arrangements and kept the form alive. Not only that, but some of the original blues players enjoyed late-age popularity and royalties because of covers by white blues guitarists. I think of Son House, in particular, who was rediscovered. Jack White is just one of his fans. "Out on the Western Plain" is truly great in the recorded version that appears on "Against the Grain." He always does it well live, but there an added something to the LP version.
Wish i could've seen him. Died at 47. My guitar gently weeps.........

I was lucky got to see Rory live twice back in the 70s he was fantastic , his enthusiasm and joy on stage was infectious , check ot Shadow Play or Back inYour Town .

Commercialism has ruined the music industry. Also, there used to be quite a few record labels, and now there are only a few. No competition, nowhere for new artists to go.

Rory Gallagher was a genius, a rock legend, who influenced many and changed IRISH musician for ever, he liked nothing more to be playing live, his studio work just was not as 'alive & and exciting', no Gallagher no Brian may,No edge , just to name two, Slash is also on record as being very influenced by him as well. He never sought the limelight, and over 30million album sales tells its own tale, defiantly in the group of five best players of all time.

Rory gave credit whenever it was due, he admired the bluesmen and it can be seen. Unlike other big names that ripped off early bluesmen and got dragged to court numerous times *cough*zeppelin*cough*
