I HAD heard of Rory, but never REALLY knew much of his music until my 17 year old guitar prodigy son turned me onto him. My son idolizes him. Can play a ton of his music. Kid is simply incredible.
That's awesome. See if you can find my comment above somewhere. Your son has great taste, it's not just the chops, it's the intangibles like attitude and humanity. :)
In Germany (I think maybe 1971) at a 3 day concert. Paul McCartney and Wing, Sly and the Family Stone, Rod Stewart and some guy named Rory Galleghar. We waited outside in the rain but Sir Paul never showed. Sly and his Family performed 3 songs and abruptly left the stage.I guess Sir Paul and Sir Sly had money issues with management which didn't consider that regular folk had been waiting in the rain for a weekend to hear/see them. But Rod Stewart showed up and lit the stage with Ron Wood. And then this guy who nobody knew about, Rory Galleghar came on stage and set the whole concert on fire. The absolute energy of the concert was Rory Galleghar. Never forget it . Rock and roll with no BS.
I met Roy in the late 1980s and spent an entire afternoon and an evening concert with him. He was a very likeable friendly and funny man. He told me quite a few funny stories from his touring life. Originally, I was just going to do a 5 - 10 min interview with him, but he insisted that I hang around for the rest of the day. And we spent quite a few hours talking about everything besides his music.
I met Rory in London around 1990, just him and me in the upstairs bar of Mean Fiddler. I didnt intrude but when he was leaving I offered my hand and he took it. I thanked him for his music and he was very gracious.
When I was 17 years old in 1979, I bought a used copy of "Stage Struck" not knowing anything about Rory's music. I was totally blown away by Rory's energy and I never looked back. I learned every note and covered songs like 'Follow Me' and 'Shadow Play' for years and still do. I got a ton of inspiration from the man. My '76 Strat has been beaten senseless. :) Some say Van Halen invented fret tapping but some of us know differently. :) Thanks Rory RIP.
That's amazing Allan. Sounds familiar for sure. I've been playing acoustic ( 3 chords and the truth..lol..) for decades but my son is LIGHT years ahead of me now. Started on the Bass at 10 and has progressed from there. I keep buying the gear and he keeps improving...lol....4 acoustics, Strat (Mexican but she's nice!) Epiphone Les Paul, Squire Strat (Indonesian...$15 bucks at a garage sale...lol...) a Fender Mandolin and a fiddle he's now learning. Plus a 100w tube amp....which the Ex-wife just looooooves.....bwahahahahahahaha! Be well brother.
@@traviskeeler5655 That's awesome, I'm impressed that your son likes Rory enough to learn his licks or even knows about him at 17. Doing stuff like that opens the door to becoming a fluid improviser. I'm going to share another gem you can pass on to your son. Show him this video, trust me when I tell you this, there is more where that came from. Cheers from Vancouver Island. :) ruclips.net/video/kZzhQXG7OfY/видео.html
Seeing this makes me smile yet sad. Rory seemed like such a sweet and genuine man with a wonderful sense of humor. It saddens me to think he lived such a solitary life, when he deserved so much more happiness in his life.
Brilliant! Thank you for the upload. Caught Rory twice only, Macroom in the ‘70’s and Hammersmith in the ‘90’s. Sad day when he went. I met Donal as I had a small part in the memorial in Temple Bar for Rory.
He was wonderful when he came to Japan. I was very young and still a school girl but his music gave me something wonderful and I myself became a musician. I am sure I am in that film grabbing stage. very close to him.
The best off stage moment I ever saw was when Jack Bruce was explaining how to play his song Politician to Rory. Then they played it. That can be found on RUclips somewhere.
I got to see Rory play in San Diego in 1974. A couple of weeks ago I found out that there is a double album of that show. I bought it straight away and man, it was as great as I've remembered for all these years! It's really a good quality recording too!
I saw "Taste', (Rory's band), open for Delany & Bonnie, & Blind Faith. They closed the show with members of each band jamming. I didn't know of Rory until then. He KILLED. Clapton just laid back & let Rory roar.
What an absolutely fantastic film. Loved Rory since Taste at the IOW (he WAS better than Hendrix). There was so much good stuff that has not been shown before, Donal excelled himself. Still get goose bumps when the play ANY track from his first album (my desert island disc). Fantastic, all over again
My older brother John Paul, and myself, would save up our pocket money in the 70s and buy an album that we wanted, one particular album that JP bought was Taste 71 or there abouts, sinner boy gave me an eargasm, thanks JP for bringing home this pure genius into our musical world.
I wonder why he remains relatively unknown in the States? I guess no hit songs. I only knew about him from guitar magazines my bandmates got. Never heard any of his stuff til YT.

Rory played the music he liked. No compromise, no commercial sell-out. True artist.

without a doubt, the best guitarist ever. prove me wrong

Life does not just consists of happiness ❤ and solitude is not just negative ❤
@@NoelGestapo-ln7nn true. I relate to it cause I’m a solitary person myself

lucky enough to see him live in Chicago at cabaret Metro must have been 90 or 91! One of the greatest blues and rock guitarists of all time❤❤❤

Such a gift this bio!
Saw him live in Swansea, amazing player. Around 1972
The greatest. Always missed.
Meu queixo cai no chão sempre que vejo e ouço Rory. Inesquecível.... Meu vício!
What a great documentary! ❤️
Rory was the best dynamite on stage was a privilege to have seen him in concert

Fabulous stuff. I really enjoyed this
The lp "On the Boards" by Taste is a true masterpeice!
My Dutch buddies turned me on to Rory..Irish Tour 74.
Shake My Tree off the Coverdale/Page album. Total banger. Must have played the rest of the CD half a dozen times 😵💫
My holy trinity of guitar players : Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa and Rory Gallagher. If Jimi Hendirix is the Father, Rory is definitely the Holy Ghost.
Thanks I already seen it but my mates channel got shut down for playing it the documentary makers found it and we lost the riverbluesmen channel
I wonder why he remains relatively unknown in the States? I guess no hit songs. I only knew about him from guitar magazines my bandmates got. Never heard any of his stuff til YT.
Thanks for this post! Rory, legend lives on!
Rhory storie...so glad I watched this ... jimmy page mentioned him so now I know and follow 😂😂😂🎸🔥💥⚡💥🔥🎸 hey was that Sophie Loyd 😅 ❤
Is this the same documentary that was broadcast on RTE as "Rory Gallagher: Calling Card"? Managed to download it in case it gets taken down.
No, this is a BBC documentary! I'd like to find RTE doc but unavailable outside Ireland!
Thanks to Lou Martin.
I mean really, who the hell is better than Rory?
It's a good question, I think Alvin Lee is right up there next to him. I think almost a tie for me. As I've seen both of them.
Well said Rory was the best no doubt about it
Doubt Geldof was at Isle of Wight
I met him several times
If they make his movie I,d love to play him 😂😂😂😢😊⚡💥🔥🎸🔥💥⚡☮️♾️😎
Wow....sexy Sophie has clearly made it now....good on her ..what a talent .and man ..what a stunner .Good on her

Forget which drummer it was, but he had this annoying habit of always being the last member of the band to end the song.
Ha Ha yeah i know i remember thinking that then Rory would do a guitar roll and the drummer would do it again got really repetitive this is quite a typical awful documentary Rory died a junky hooked on benzos
Rory . . .The real thing
In my opinion, his greatest song was "Hellcat", released in 1982.
This guy was a genius and a gentleman
