Rory Gallagher wasn't really on my radar until you started mentioning him. Definitely going to check out his catalogue after watching this video, thanks!

It's a wonderful journey-so glad you are interested in pursing it. Remember as you listen that Rory was not into pedals and effects until his later years, so much of the sounds you hear are what he could create using just his guitar and two hands. He was brilliantly innovative. For a more complete explanation of Rory's techniques, I really recommend checking out Dave Simpson's RUclips page. He has a series of videos "How to Play Like Rory Gallagher" that are fabulous, even if you don't play guitar.

@@dawnmoore4329 I started by listening to Irish Tour '74 last evening and really enjoyed it. He has quite a few albums, looking forward to making my way through them. Thanks for the heads up, will definitely check out Dave Simpson's channel as well!

i love the Rockpalast recordings of Rory Gallagher from the seventies - that was a German tv show that often had in the weekend live shows of rock bands.

Great reaction to this interview! Thank you! Seeing Rory perform live was transformative. For me there is no other performer that even remotely comes close to that experience. While he may not be very well known by some today, top guitar players sure know him. It was actually Brian May, from Queen, who attributes his sound to Rory - there's also a video of Brian relaying his own story about Rory (mostly with his band Taste, but also solo): ruclips.net/video/S2_a4uwxLsI/видео.html Rory was a mild-mannered, very kind soul who became an intense life-force on stage - and his performances were truly epic. But through it all, Rory never played the game. He refused to release singles and wouldn't allow the music companies to compromise his musical integrity or vision, and he preferred more intimate venues to huge arenas. He performed way more than most artists and it took its toll. Contrary to popular belief, the main reason for his illness was the result of developing a fear of flying after one very bad flight. He was irresponsibly given prescriptions from doctors to overcome this, and steroids for other conditions. It was the pain reliever paracetamol, in particular, that most destroyed his liver. A lot of the drugs that were prescribed to him have since been banned. Rory did have successful liver transplant surgery, but ultimately passed away from a MRSA infection he contracted. BTW, your two suggestions of "Irish Tour '74" and "Tattoo" are perfect starters for new listeners, but then again, when it comes to Rory, it's all superb. Anyway, thanks again, for your very thoughtful reaction...

74 is the best live album ever chum! I went to the first 'festival' of his music in Newcastle Co Down in about 81/2? Can't remember as it was long ago but I didn't see him live unfortunately. A shit he did not give to the assholes up here that were on the the killing sprees at the time. So sad he is forgotten by many. I don't think he even got a place in Planet Rocks best riffs last week!

Great reaction Rory. I will definitely check out the album you recommended.
In the first Rush album, you can hear the Jimmy page / Led Zep influences, as well as Black Sabbath. Later albums have other British bands like Yes, Genesis and The Police influences.
Looking forward to your next Rush reaction.

Rory was a gentleman; no "rock star" carry-on, modest, greatest guitarist ever.

As usual, I’m about 7 months late with a comment on something… I was lucky enough to see Rory Gallagher open for Rush in DesMoines, Iowa in 82 … it was my 3rd ever concert and I was only 15 … front row, being smashed up against the barriers, Rory was directly in front of me. So I got the FULL Rory experience. Unfortunately, after Rory was done, I couldn’t take anymore being smashed… thought my ribs were gonna break, so I headed up into the balcony to watch Rush … great show. Signals tour btw.

You have to check out Shakey Graves, Roll The Bones, Live Audiotree version. (Not the Rush song). Like Rory, he loses himself in the music. Have you ever seen anyone play three instruments at the same time and sing? Oh yeah…Geddy does it too. But a must to see this.
