Oh Lord Fil of Henley, this is one of the bravest things you’ve ever done! When I was a young warthog, my rock trio attempted quite a few Rory songs - Railway and Gun, Used to Be, Bought and Sold, I wonder Who, Hands Off, Tattooed Lady and others. Even when he was barely in his 20s, he was so many light years ahead of me - and most people - that my feeble efforts were more of an attempt to alert (then) a fairly indifferent world to St Rory of Gallagher. The nearest we ever got was “Follow Me,” but by Top Priority, RG was so world-class that I gave up!!🤣🤣
The first time I saw Rory in 1968, he began his set with Taste (almost completely known), he said, “We’d like to play a little tune here by Buddy Guy that I hope you’ll like, First Time I met the Blues, hope you like it, thanks very much,” and then struck a straight D major 2nd-fret D, and off he went.... as it was almost illegal in the Blues Fraternity to play anything other than a 9th or double-7th, this in itself was unusual. Eric Kitteringham and Norman Damery weren’t the best players, but the song just lifted the roof with his extraordinary harmonies, semi-tone Celtic runs and Coltraney riffs, some of which you mention here.
Jimi had played the night before and had one of his badly “off” nights. The barely-billed Taste didn’t - the entire crowd was gasping with disbelief.
The next 37 times I saw him play were all just as good: I’m not sure if he ever played a “bad” gig.
Fil, perhaps a few folk who hear this will realise just what a musician was RG. Thank you very much.😁

hey Fil - love your stuff and the joy & respect you have for musicians. and you always appreciate Rory. so here is one of my favourite memories of Rory. back in early 90’s I saw Rory play at the Bataclan (i think) in Paris on his Fresh Evidence tour. smallish crowd in fact, Rory came out all gun’s blazin with his « harder » rock blues to get the crowd going, then suddenly the electricity went out - completely - legend has it Rory blew all the fuses when he turned up his Strat. Rory took it in his stride. he grabbed his acoustic (Martin?) sat on the edge of stage and invited the audience to move closer and shut up - and he almost played a full set « camp fire style » before eventually the lights came back up. fabulous artist. still miss him. cheers fil

I had never heard of Rory Gallagher until I saw him open for Deep Purple in 1973. He blew the lid off the place. Was so good we booed Fleetwood Mac off the stage and demanded he come back out for another encore. To be fair this was the low point of FM with Bob Welsh and minus the late great Danny Kirwin, so they being in between Rory and Deep Purple just didn't work for the audience. But man what a force of nature that man was. Good memories.

@@denises8956 not when Danny was a part of them. Kiln House, Future Games, and Bare Trees are three of the most criminally underrated lp's in rock history and I GUARANTEE that had Danny Kirwin still been with them, booing them that night would NOT have happened. No matter how good Rory(and Ritchie Blackmore)was.
PS: I heard our venue wasn't the only place this occured. Evidently, this happened quite frequently on that tour.

Great analysis Fil. I am not a musician, but a music lover. What I find really interesting is that your technical breakdown is pointing out all the subtle nuances that make the performance so enjoyable. I know I like Rory's playing and I am in awe of the technical skill, but videos like this help explain to me why I like it. I completely agree with your statement about the little things being thrown in that convey a feeling at that moment as oppose to just repeating a memorized solo. It is why I think there are some artists like Rory that are just at their best when performing live (Carlos Santana and Gary Moore to name a few others ). I think you said this best in the Santana "Europa" analysis video when you talked about the artist wanting you to feel something in the note being played.

Even guitarists like Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page admire Rory Gallagher. In fact, when Mick Taylor left the Rolling Stones, Rory Gallagher was the first consideration as a replacement. Rory Gallagher declined. Rory Gallagher was also considered as a replacement for Ritchie Blackmore in Deep Purple. Rory Gallagher again declined. Roger Glover, the bassist for Deep Purple, did produce some of Rory Gallagher's music. Thanks for sharing this great analysis video. May Rory Gallagher rest in peace. Cheers, Fil!

All these years later I’ve “ found” him on RUclips…wow what a guitarist..even his singi..some of his playing and singing sound like Hendrix. The sounds he gets out of his guitar are phenomenal. I’d go as far as to say he’s my favourite along with Gary Moore, Jeff Beck, Eddie Van Halen and Hendrix.

  • @danielschaeffer1294

From what I’ve read of hm, Rory started off listening to a lot of country blues, and playing acoustic, before graduating to his famous Strat. That may be why his stuff always sounded like it was in a direct line going back to the Delta. He wasn’t the fastest or showiest, but he sure was the bluesiest. He gave the term “black Irish” new meaning. And for my money he was just as good on acoustic. Check out the Leadbelly tune “Out on the Western Plain.” He plays it in a vaguely Bert Jansch style, even better than Jansch could.
I worked my way through school tending bar in O’Connell’s Pub, one of St. Louis’ most famous literary bars. One night Rory and the boys came in after a gig, and parked themselves at the bar. Rory downed four Guinness and Powers boilermakers, and he could still walk a straight line. That takes practice. And a word of warning. Don’t ever get a bunch of Irishmen talking about politics after they’ve had a few. You’ll never shut them up.
    Rock on!

Saved! To play like Rory it takes a certain controlled aggression and lots of controlled energy once you got that techinical. A kind of supreme confidence due to experience. The man performed a whole lot for a long time. Performing is the key really. You know? Hes my favorite performer. He was best live where as Bob Dylan was a master in the studio….. my two favorites of all my time. I do have others! I LOVE a great performamce! Who doesnt ha ha?

Rory rarely played the same thing twice - so if you learn a solo off his record, it would be unlikely you see him play that same thing live. I liked that a lot about Rory :)

Rory Gallagher was one of my favorite guitarists and inspiration since I first heard of him back in the 60's. One thing however, I never heard anyone pronounce his last name with a silent "g". Is this a thing? It's always been Gal-lah-gurr as far as any of us old rockers know.

FIL, you can't be a self-respected player/teacher/god with less than 8 strats behind you! Rory's music contains so much energy, texture, brilliance and the hightest level of musicianship I've ever heard anywhere that not even the passing of half a century can dull its impact - nothing like him before or since, he's a stand-alone, the STONEHENGE of Rock! He didn't just play the guitar, he made love to it - and his Strat obviously loved him back!
